Garth Brooks is a hugely successful artist (even though I have to say, only in the USA) and "No Fences" is usually seen as his greatest album, plus with 17 times platinum it is his most successful studio album as well. It features 11 country crossover songs that heavily borrow elements from the genres rock, ane blues, and just feel so alive. That is due to Brooks' passionate performance, the perfectly embedded use of all kinds of guitars and other instrumentals and the unusually deep lyrics that offer a variety of moods and topics. The hit single "Friends in Low Places" has a brilliantly sarcastic tone while "The Thunder Rolls" is a masterpiece of metaphoric and symbolic storytelling. Songs like "This Ain't Tennessee" and "Victim of the Game" tell tales about the difficulty of love, but in a way we know it from Frank Sinatra classics, despite their fresh and modern use of instruments, vocals and sound.
