Top 10 Best Chess Players

The Top Ten
1 Bobby Fischer

If all he had to do was play chess, his placement at the top of the list would be unquestioned. Imagine how many brilliancies he would have demonstrated had he continued competitive chess at the top level for the rest of his career - his contributions to our understanding of the game would have been immense. Fischer's issues away from the board are a tragedy to the chess world as well as an embarrassment to his legacy, but don't let them distract you from his undeniable, overwhelming ability to win chess games.

2 Garry Kasparov

Edged out a victory over Karpov by the slimmest of margins for the WCC. He was young, Karpov was older and perhaps lost some of his youthful energy.

While I have an immense amount of respect for Fischer and Morphy as players, my vote has to go for Kasparov. Not only a dominant force in Chess for 30 years, Kasparov has continued to grow interest in chess after his retirement. Kasparov has been able to balance his brilliance in chess with other aspects of his life. His voice in opposition to Putin makes him one of my personal heroes, regardless of his chess skills.

3 Magnus Carlsen

I agree with those who say that his style is a cross between Capablanca and Fischer. I think it is unfortunate that he refused to defend his championship title.

Hi actually magnus did win fide world cup and is 1st at the moment and has the highest rating ever so go magnus!

Magnus Carlsen is the best chess player. He is ranked number 1.

4 Jose Capablanca

People keep throwing things in with the hope of success, they keep trying to throw all kinds of wild shots, this applies not just to chess but in life in general (I'm guilty of this too), it doesn't matter how good the shots you throw are, or how great the tactics you keep chucking at the wall happen to be, in life, if you strive for absolute zen like perfection everything should only take one shot. Capablanca understood this and hence was able to outdo and outmaneuver everybodies best attempts against his positions. One attack after one attack and he kept reassembling into ever so simple positions, he understood chess as merely where the pieces ought to be.

5 Anatoly Karpov

Karpov played exceptional Chess the years that following Fischer's refusal to play. His games are true works of art similar to Capablanca's games.

Bobby Fischer was brilliant, but come on. Karpov at his prime vs Fischer at his prime is a blowout. Karpov's positional understanding would overwhelm Fischer.

I like Tal more but, honestly, Karpov is a genius and it is impossible to compare any player to him in his prime

6 Paul Morphy

Ahead of his time without any real teaching. If he would born today, his godly talent would have: reform the game- (as he did in his 3 year career) and decimate the top tournament, heck even computers!

This fellow was too gifted for normal life, what he wanted deep inside...

Great chess players come and go, But to have a chess player like morphy that shocked chess with his skill and talent, the way he seen the board and how the pieces work together, the energy inside each piece, his lagacy will be talked about for many years to come!

7 Viswanathan Anand

Most influential player of all time, hero of the 3rd world. Pioneer of sorts and the one who ended Russian domination. And the longevity, GOAT.

I and my paternal grandfather loves his tricks. my grandfather always plays in my tablet on the highest levels and wins the tablet

A great chess player who has inspired an entire nation. He probably has more fans than any other player.

8 Emanuel Lasker

He remaind top 10 in the world until like 60 years old and was the best in the world for over 20 years.

He was the absolute best at maneuvering pieces in the middle game.

He was champion for 27 years crushing 2nd place Kasparov who was world chess champion for 16 years

9 Mikhail Tal

This list needs more attention and this man as well. Deserves to be in the top 10. A tactical combinatorial genius who enjoys himself a beautiful yet brilliant king hunt on every game of his.

He's my favourite chess player cause of his attacking style. So wild and but has meaningful tactics

Can't even fully describe how different, amazing and weird style he had.

10 Alexander Alekhine

Out of all the Russian World Class players that were tactical players, he was probably the best.

He's great! He's game made extra ordinary brilliant combination!

Alekhine should be higher on this list - top 6 at least.

The Contenders
11 Vladimir Kramnik
12 Mikhail Botvinnik

Botvinnik won a lot of games with tricky but not terribly deep tactics.

13 Fabiano Caruana
14 Wesley So

His chess wizardry is just amazing to behold. You would think that you have the positional upper hand, only to realize soon enough that you are being led to a trap all along. A strategic and tactical prodigy. The sky is the limit for him & it wouldn't surprise me if he overtakes Carlson soon.

He is the best us chmapion for 10 years destroyed carlsen and Nakamura his best match was in speed chess with Giri he also beat Aronion and Grishuk.

15 Danny Kopec
16 Boris Spassky
17 Vassily Ivanchuk

Worthy candidate of being world champion. Sadly he is not. Yet he still will remain one of the most eccentric brilliant players out there.

Vassily Ivanchuk is amazing. He defeated Kasparov, Karpov and Carlsen, and he always plays amazing games.

The only man kasparov ever feared!

18 Wilhelm Steinitz

He articulated many of the modern-day principles of Chess. The first step in any field of study is the hardest.

19 Judit Polgar
20 Alexander Morozevich
21 Paul Keres

AKA the Estonian powerhouse. Quite the positional player and how deadly his counterattacking abilities are. He doesn't let aggressive tactical players breathe in the slightest!

22 Viktor Korchnoi
23 Tigran Petrosian
24 Sean Carpenter

Sean isn't that good, he only thinks he is because he's special, (he has male and female parts! )

Sean is so good that he paid me a lot of money to say so.

Sean did it with a fifty-year-old!

25 Hikaru Nakamura

Best bullet player ever. He is one of the few people on this list that is still very good plus he beat 22 Chess.com players in just 7 minutes. Brilliant player indeed!

All rounder, richest chess player to ever exist. Youtuber + Chess still is maintained.
