Best Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Characters

The Top Ten
1 Carl Johnson

Compared to other Grand Theft Auto protagonists, CJ is rather bland character-wise, in my opinion. No idea why, but he doesn't seem to be the kind of guy to literally wreak havoc around a city unlike Tommy or Niko.

Carl Johnson - Jack of all trades. You name it, he's done it. He started from the bottom and now pretty much runs the state. So typical of a Grand Theft Auto protagonist, yet so different. His badass side was evident all through the storyline.

CJ is probably the most iconic GTA character ever and my personal favorite. He is such a brave badass, loyal to his homies and especially family. He deserves all the credit he gets because he's the best.

2 Ryder

I feel so bad for Ryder. He wasn't even meant to be the traitor character in the first place. Even if that's the case, when you kill him in the "Pier 69" mission, his death is literally normal as if he's just some random civilian or a Ballas member you would meet on the street. Meanwhile, Smoke's death is actually shown in a cutscene, and they provide dialogue explaining why Smoke betrays the Grove Street families. I wish Ryder wasn't the traitor. He never deserved to be one. Even after you killed him, he's never mentioned at all for the rest of the storyline.

3 Wu Zi Mu

Wu Zi Mu is the greatest. He is cool, calm, and he's blind with a Neo-like look!

If Stevie Wonder had a badass adopted Asian son, it would be Wu Zi Mu.

I liked him too because he was so nice and a good guy.

4 Frank Tenpenny

Frank is a corrupt cop, and I can't believe nobody did any reviews on him. I mean, come on, his voice actor is none other than Samuel L. Jackson! Great character who dies a weirdly slow death, I guess? So that's it for this review. I love this character, and you should too. See you later Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and all gamers out there!

Samuel L. Jackson voiced this guy.

5 Sweet

I find it a little odd for him being against crack dealing, considering he's a gang leader after all. But aside from that, he is just meh, personality-wise. Sweet is just yapping about staying true to the hood and berating Carl for attempting to pursue his own life.

Sweet's like the personification of Grove Street, the character who cares the most about it, way more than Ryder, Big Smoke, and even CJ. I know that his love for the gang may be a little exaggerated, but come on, he should totally be one of the firsts.

6 Big Smoke

Aside from the memes, I find him to be an outwardly boring character unless you begin to dig into his motives for betraying the Groves as well as the thoughts that go on in his mind.

He is fat and maybe a little stupid. But I like him.

I'll have two number 9's. Number 9 large. Number 6 with extra dip. Need I say more?

7 OG Loc

He was so funny. I wish there were more missions with him because I thought he was hilarious. I like him.

8 Ken Rosenberg
9 Eddie Pulaski
10 The Truth

He helped you steal a 60 million dollar project in Black Project!

Uh, yeah, that's like, your opinion, man...

The Contenders
11 Catalina

I have one question about Grand Theft Auto 3. Why didn't the Cartel tell Catalina that Claude was alive the whole time, as they shoot you and save the old oriental man? Did they want him alive and Catalina dead?

Why does everyone hate Catalina? I liked her so much! She would have been great with CJ, and I found her funny. The Catalina missions were my favorites in the game and I wish there were more. She is also in my top five best characters.

Crazy and psycho... She and Tenpenny can date and rot in hell.

12 Melvin "Big Smoke" Harris

Good villain, good liar, or maybe. First, he sells his house in Grove Street and moves into Ballas territory with drug money. Tenpenny shows up at his house constantly, never turns up for shootings against Ballas, and refuses to shoot Ballas. In the mission Wrong Side of the Tracks, I think he ran really slow to the bike to allow the Vagos or whoever to get away.

Okay, yeah, CJ obviously is the best, but Big Smoke is awesome. I mean, he was a pretty awesome villain. Even the way he dies at the end is awesome. His speech about the money, yes, it's been done before, but it fit so well in this game.

13 Salvatore Leone
14 Mike Toreno

I always liked Mike Toreno, and he was one of my favorite Grand Theft Auto characters. I've always liked the "cynical, shadowy government agent" figure, and he is one of the best examples I have ever seen in any media. He was able to come off as both menacing and funny at the same time, which always made me like him.

15 Claude
16 Kendl Johnson

I think there should have been missions with her, but I think she was cool.

17 Cesar Villapando

Since he advised CJ about Ryder and Big Smoke, I realized he was one important character. He's my favorite character on this list after CJ.

This is my second favorite character (after CJ) because I think he was a good friend. He was also super nice and I think he was a good guy.

Because he is so badass and cool.

18 Zero

As much as I hate the Zero missions, I think Zero is overall a good character. I love his personality and how he's an electronics nerd. I also like how Zero actually helps us during the robbery at Caligula's palace by turning off the lights and such. Zero is such an underrated character, in my opinion.

He's unique, nobody like him in this game.

19 Madd Dog

Madd Dogg is a major part of the rapping scene in the game and he can get really aggressive if someone steals his rhyme book. Hint: it's OG Loc! "Coming in the place, gun in my waist! Punch you in the face!" He is a phony, but some people really like him.

20 T Bone Mendez
21 Maccer
22 Jizzy B
23 Hernandez

I feel so sorry for Hernandez. How could someone so cruel like Tenpenny and Pulaski kill such a sweet young man like him? Glad he got his justice and I hope he has a decent burial. RIP Hernandez.

24 Emmet

I think he's underrated and I liked him.
