Top 10 Best Super Mario Bros. Characters

Mario Bros. is a Nintendo video game franchise featuring their iconic character, Mario. The series' first installment was Mario Bros., and its successor, Super Mario Bros., is credited with launching the franchise into global success.
The Top Ten
1 Yoshi Yoshi, once romanized as Yossy, is a fictional anthropomorphic dinosaur who appears in video games published by Nintendo. Often appearing as a sidekick and helper to Mario, Yoshi is most known for his appearances in the Yoshi's Island and the Super Mario franchises.

Many types of dinosaurs are great, but Yoshi is the best dinosaur. Yoshi has helped Mario and Luigi along the way in many adventures since they were in diapers! Over time, Yoshi has also become more brave and courageous. At first, in Super Mario World, if an enemy touched him, he would run away scared. But later, he took the lead in adventures for the Mario Bros, fought in Smash, and even got his own game series: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Woolly World.

Yoshi is my favorite Mario character, not because he is cute, but because he saved Mario and Luigi when they were babies. In my opinion, Middleweights are perfect for me because they have the right amount of speed and handling. If it wasn't for him, the Mario Bros. we all know and love wouldn't be here. Yoshi is friendly and caring. He loves to play with his friends. I don't like his fanbase, though. Most of his fans love him just because he's adorable. The fanbase isn't even a reason to hate a character.

2 Luigi Luigi, originally a palette swap of Mario named Green Mario, is a major character featured in video games and related media released by Nintendo. Created by prominent game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, Luigi is portrayed as the slightly younger, taller fraternal twin brother of Nintendo's unofficial mascot... read more

He is one of the best-developed characters in the series and one of the only characters to earn his own official video game. He is also a genuinely nice guy and a hero in his own right, ready to help others whenever he can, even if he is often perceived as a coward or overshadowed by others.

Luigi is easily unnerved compared to other characters and is a bit of a daydreamer to boot. But it's the fact that he can surpass these aspects of himself that makes him one of the most admirable characters in this series. Clumsily lovable, he has a big heart and always tries to do the right thing.

He's actually really overpowered, though you wouldn't think it, and he is more skilled in power and athletics than his older brother (he jumps higher and can manipulate fire and electricity). Plus, with Luigi, his goals are often accomplished without much effort on his part. He's just that awesome.

If you still aren't convinced, just check out his Mario Strikers theme. Come back here after that and say he doesn't deserve his place on this list, and you must be a really devoted hater. Or you just know nothing about Luigi. In any case, he'll always be number one in my heart!

3 Mario Mario, originally named Jumpman, is the main character of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, created by the creative director and video game designer at Nintendo of Japan, Shigeru Miyamoto. Mario has appeared in almost every Mario game, including games in spin-off series as a playable character, with... read more

I know most people relate to Luigi, and that's why you voted for him. People love Yoshi because he's adorable and also helps Mario. Well, I relate more to Mario than Luigi because I'm the older sister and my sister is the younger one. I am better at doing things than she is, I'm more popular than she is, and I always like helping when I can, just like Mario.

My sister is like Luigi because she is a scaredy-cat, jealous, clumsy, and cares about her sibling just like Luigi. Personally, I think Mario is as adorable as Yoshi, but overall, I think every character is super cute and holds a special place for me. I just think of Mario as my best friend because we are alike. Mario number one! Let's-a go!

4 Bowser Bowser is the main antagonist of the Mario Bros. Franchise. From kidnapping Princess Peach to simply destroying a fun game between Mario and Friends in the Mario Party spinoff series, this king of the Koopas has set up a certain hatred towards himself amongst the large cast of Mario Characters. He first... read more

Bowser is one of the most misunderstood characters in Mario history. He's a man who has to control the army of the Koopa Kingdom, and possibly does not even want to capture the Princess, because he never specifies a reason why he does it. Another point is how he has befriended Mario, Luigi, and the other characters. This is evident when he joins them for a ride in Mario Kart or Mario Party. He also is one of the very few characters who actually has feelings. He cares for his son and wants him to have a mother, as seen in Mario Sunshine. This dragon has feelings, a son, and is one of the most compassionate people in the Mushroom Kingdom, even if he sometimes doesn't show it.

5 Toad Toad, known in Japan as Kinopio, is a major character in the Mario Bros. franchise. He assists Princess Peach in the Mushroom Kingdom and will do whatever it takes to help her. He first appeared in the classic game, Super Mario Bros. after being kidnapped by Bowser and his minions. Since then he has... read more

How is Toad this low? I seriously don't understand why he's somewhat hated by some people! I mean, come on. What's there to hate about him? Is it because he tells you that the princess is in another castle while giving the finger? First, that's not Toad. His first appearance was in Super Mario Bros 2 according to the Mario wiki. Second, even if he was, it just makes the game harder and more fun. Without multiple worlds, the game can be boring or not as fun at least. Because he has an annoying voice? Are you kidding me? Sure, his voice can be childish, but that's just what Toad's personality is.

6 Rosalina Rosalina, known as Rosetta in Japan, is a major character in the Mario Franchise created by Nintendo. She first appeared in the 2007 Mario Game, Super Mario Galaxy for the Nintendo Wii and later returned for the game's sequel in 2010. Since then, she has been featured in many main-series Mario Games... read more

Rosalina is the best. Out of all the princesses, including the ones not in Mario, I love her the best. I love Lumas as well, and she is basically their mother. Absolutely think her dress is awesome. I am so happy she is one of the playable characters in Super Mario 3D World! She deserves it!

Rosalina is one of the most amazing and majestic Mario characters in existence. She can be seen as a motherly figure, surrounded by cute little Lumas. Attractive, with a nice, calm, and mature voice, she wears a unique teal dress. Rosalina also has a wand, which grants her magical powers. These powers allow her to perform abilities such as levitation, force fields, and even control a large, beautiful comet observatory as a spaceship.

She is one of those rare gem characters representing the modern era. She originated in a main game, Super Mario Galaxy, and actually has a backstory. In her beautiful story, due to her loving and caring nature, she assisted a 'strange creature,' now known as a Luma, in an attempt to find its 'mama,' even at the expense of her own family. Doesn't this say a lot about her character?

Even though Rosalina is still a relatively new character, she is beginning to appear in many more games. She even made an entire playable appearance in a small roster of five in one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2013, Super Mario 3D World. How awesome is that? Rosalina adds much variety to any roster, being a tall, strong, and powerful female figure. It is because of all of these reasons and more that I view Rosalina as a top-tier Mario character, and she definitely deserves the popularity she receives. Hopefully, you'll agree!

7 Wario Wario is a character in Nintendo's Mario series who was originally designed as an antagonist to Mario. His motives are driven by greed and he will take the side of whoever will give him the most pay. Although he may seem like just a mean man with no heart, he does have a very tragic past.

Like Bowser, Wario is quite misunderstood, especially in the Mario vs. Wario comics. He and Mario were friends as kids. Wario was angry and brought up his childhood with Mario. The worst part was playing cowboys. Mario was the sheriff every time except once. The one time Wario was sheriff, Mario made fun of him, so Wario wanted to get back at Mario by humiliating him at Peach's birthday party. However, things go awry when Wario and Mario both fail to give Peach the Samus doll. They blame each other until they find out that Luigi got Peach what she wanted.

8 Bowser Jr. Bowser Jr., or sometimes simply Jr., is a video game character who appears in Nintendo's Mario franchise as the secondary antagonist. He is the youngest son of the series' primary antagonist, Bowser.

The only character on this list who receives ongoing character focus. Other characters just appear and play recycled roles.

The mini version of Bowser is genius! But the thing is, how is Bowser Jr. alive if Bowser doesn't have a wife? I think Bowser Jr. has to be a clone, or Bowser adopted him.

I'm glad Bowser Jr. is NOT a Koopaling. The last thing we need is for him to be "generic Koopa #8 who flings glitter from his pixie stick." Bowser Jr. is not only Bowser's right-hand man, but he's also like Eggman. He builds and uses machines against Mario. Bowser Jr. even modified his Junior Clown Car into a submarine! Bowser has never done this with his Koopa Clown Car.

9 Waluigi Waluigi is a lanky self-centered, brusque young lad as he is considered evil and the main rival of Luigi. Waluigi is shown causing local havoc in most games he appears in alongside his partner Wario. Waluigi is not instinctively evil or the antagonist (not counting DDR), as a matter of fact, he shows... read more

Nintendo misses out when they don't utilize Waluigi. Honestly, Waluigi has so much potential, and it's a pity no one even notices it. He could be a star and an actual complex character if they chose to explore who Waluigi is. I know this will probably get thumbed down, but what is the appeal for Rosalina? Her backstory? Personality? To me, Rosalina seems bland compared to Waluigi. Waluigi simply radiates personality.

Of all the characters on this list, all the comments have either low upvotes or negative votes. Waluigi may not be some noble archetype, but that's what I think makes him so lovable. He is mean and revels in others' misery. Even when he is in the midst of cheating, he will accuse someone else of cheating. Waluigi's cornerstone personality trait is self-pity, and he would step on anyone's toes to win.

We can all personally relate to anti-hero/villain characters simply because they are the underdogs. We see the struggles they go through, and perhaps can even relate. Waluigi is that underdog. He is extremely underappreciated, and I think maybe all he wants is some recognition. All I'm saying is, give Waluigi a chance!

10 Toadette Toadette is a character in the Mario series. She is a female Toad who first appeared in the Nintendo GameCube video game Mario Kart: Double Dash.

I love Toadette. I really want her to be in the second Super Mario Movie. I am always her in Super Mario Wonder. I love that in Super Mario Bros U, she can become Peachette. Peachette is basically Peach, but in my opinion, better. I don't know anyone hating on Toadette. I mean, who would? She is one of my favorite Mario characters.

Even with Toadette being there just to assist Toad, she has become more than that, gaining a pretty funny personality. And come on, you had to chuckle at the voice at least once. She will forever be my favorite. She may not be the best pickaxing character, but her boo-shining character is pretty good when doubled with Toad. Stand-alone, she is still good. Toadette is #1.

The Contenders
11 Donkey Kong Donkey Kong is an arcade game released by Nintendo in 1981. It is an early example of the platform game genre, as the gameplay focuses on maneuvering the main character across a series of platforms while dodging and jumping over obstacles.

Donkey Kong is the coolest Mario character ever! Sure, Mario and Bowser are the main conflict throughout the series, but Donkey Kong can dab in Mario Kart 8. He is also one of the first characters introduced into the Mario franchise. In my opinion, Donkey Kong is the best character ever!

The first Mario character. He isn't one of my favorites, but I pretty much prefer most people to Mario (except for Peach). He is capturing Pauline, but I don't know why. I just think he deserves more of a main role in games.

Believe it or not, he was Mario's first foe. Think about it: Donkey Kong, the game, came out in 1980, and Mario first came out in 1985.

12 Princess Peach Princess Peach is a major character in the Mario Bros. Franchise. She is the lead female of the The Mario franchise. She is usually the character who needs saved in most Mario Games, but also has appeared as a playable character in the Main-Series Mario Games, including Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario... read more

Why is everyone hating on Peach? People are saying that she's lazy and just waited for Mario to save her, but maybe Bowser watched her closely so she couldn't do anything! Maybe Bowser set guards for her! I mean, how could she go up against Bowser? She doesn't have a switch to push to break the floor under Bowser! How could she go up against a giant, fire-breathing turtle? #stopbullyingPeach.

You Peach haters make me sick. Just leave her alone! It's not her fault she gets kidnapped! She's a very sweet, kind princess. (She's only dumb in the Mario and Luigi games.) People do hate her for pretty awful reasons. "Daisy and Rosalina are prettier!" That's pretty arguable, and I've been a jerk about Daisy's glamour. She is pretty, but not her dress (in my opinion, trying not to be a jerk about her anymore).

While I am a Rosalina fan myself, I do like Peach. And then there's Daisy, who I tolerate now. You can't really replace her since she's a classic, and the other two aren't (though Rosalina is becoming a main Mario character).

13 Princess Daisy Princess Daisy is a fictional character in the Mario series of video games, in which she is the princess of the fictional region of Sarasaland.

Daisy debuted in Super Mario Land in 1989, after few other appearances she disappeared for nine years until she was brought back in Mario Tennis (2000).

Daisy... read more

Daisy is the best character to ever enter the Mario franchise, and you cannot change my mind. First of all, she doesn't have a game. She is that good. She doesn't need one, though she would prefer one. Second of all, have you heard the somewhat famous line in Mario Strikers where she goes, "Yeah, Yeah, YEAH, humph"? It is a CLASSIC. Third of all, Peach was the practice princess. Then they saw what was wrong, which made DAISY.

I grew up playing Super Mario Land on GameBoy with my mom. So, I thought at first it was weird that it's Daisy, the princess to be rescued, and not Peach. After that, we didn't hear from her for a while until I played Mario Tennis on the N64, and she was alright.

Then Mario Kart Double Dash appeared, and Daisy became my all-time favorite character. Rosalina was a close second, though. I like Daisy more because she looks like a very fun character, and I love her tomboyish personality. She seems like the kind of girl who is very energetic and loves to run around and be competitive. She's always my main in the Mario Kart games, as well as other games where she's featured. I hope Nintendo can bring her back in a game of her own.

14 Koopa Troopa Koopa Troopas, or just simply Koopas, known in Japan as Nokonoko, are a fictional race of turtle-like creatures from the Mario series, as well as its sister Yoshi series. They most often appear as common ground enemies.

I really like Koopa Troopa and think he deserves a higher spot than where he is. Being someone who likes turtles in real life, having a cute walking turtle in a video game is amazing! So let's give Koopa Troopa the attention he deserves!

Let's face it. Koopa Troopa will always be the cutest thing to walk the fictional Earth. He's a friendly, huggable, adorable-as-heck, captivating character. And who doesn't love that?

Why is Koopa Troopa at No. 15?! It should be at number 1!

Koopa Troopa is boss.

Koopa Troopa is love. Koopa Troopa is life.

15 Shy Guy Shy Guys are an enemy from the Mario and Yoshi series that have been seen in many games, and they are masked because of their shyness.

He is so cute, and he is my second favorite Mario character ever. I picked him because my favorite is already at #1. Why would anyone hate him? He's also my sister's favorite Mario character. The only bad thing about him is his voice, but it's easy to get around once you play him enough in 7 and 8.

Person who said Shy Guy was a penguin... THANK YOU! Somebody else agrees with me. I think he's a penguin too, due to his shape and the way he waddles around. And in that mask is a beak! Oh, and he sounds British. It sounds like he says Tallyho. He's an adorable British penguin.

16 Fawful Fawful, known in Japan as Gerakobits, is a fictional character appearing in the Mario & Luigi series of role-playing video games developed by AlphaDream.

Fawful is awesome. Everyone who hates him should go get a life. If you compare him to Plankton or say he doesn't have arms, you obviously haven't played the game. If you had played the game, you would know these are traits he does not have.

Fawful is not a cheap idiot or loser. Sure, he laughs weirdly, talks weirdly, and makes weird food metaphors, but that adds to his character, not takes away from it. He is a valuable henchman to Cackletta in the first game, carrying out her orders successfully and efficiently until he is defeated by Mario and Luigi. He is also a tactical genius who manages to take over the Mushroom Kingdom without a scratch - before Bowser stops him, but hey, it's Bowser. He captures the Dark Star and almost becomes the essence of dark power.

If you aren't a fan of the RPGs and haven't actually bothered to play the games, do not judge the characters. Don't say that a character is a failure who doesn't deserve to be on this list just because you think his glasses have swirls. Sorry for ranting.

17 King Boo In the Super Mario series, King Boo is the leader of all the Boos and a major antagonist. He is an ally of King Bowser. He is depicted as a large white Boo with a crown similar to that of Princess Peach... read more

I really thought King Boo would end up around 4 or 5, but no, he is at 17. That's so unfair. He is cute, cool, powerful, and just awesome! He's actually underrated! If there's a possibility to be King Boo in a game, I would take it! In my own top 10, King Boo is definitely at number 1.

King Boo is so cute! I only liked King Boo before he turned pure evil in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. Before that, he was so cute! He's just a big white cloud!

He captured Mario and almost captured Luigi, if it wasn't for the ghost dog (I hate the ghost dog so much). I really wanted Luigi to be captured by King Boo because the villains would finally win, but then the Mario Bros would probably find a way out of the picture frame.

18 Dry Bones Dry Bones is a common enemy species in the Super Mario series of video games since „Super Mario Bros. 3“ (1988). After his first debut as a playable character in „Mario Superstar Baseball“ (2005), he became a fan-favorite and also got playable in other spin-offs of the Mario series.

This guy's pretty cool. He's so hard to destroy in the Super Mario Bros game. If you step on his head, he just puts himself back together.

Dry Bones is indeed pretty cute. It's no wonder he replaced Koopa Troopa in Mario Kart DS, especially considering that Paratroopa got completely ditched. Dry Bones actually looks cute if you see the ending screen on Mario Kart Wii.

Dry Bones doesn't have a big role, but I still consider him one of my favorite Mario characters. I love how he was made a boss in Mario Party 9, and I think Nintendo could do great things with Dry Bones!

19 Dimentio Dimentio is an evil harlequin magician and the main antagonist of the 2007 Nintendo Wii video game known as "Super Paper Mario". One of his notable features is that he has created his own Dimension, known as Dimension D.

Dimentio should be in the top ten on this list!

Dimentio is a chessmaster who cunningly uses Count Bleck, the Pure Hearts, and the four heroes to advance his goal: to destroy the universe and recreate it with him acting as God. He comes so close to achieving his ultimate goal, but when he doesn't get there, he still goes out with a bang (pun intended).

Dimentio is probably one of the best Mario RPG villains to date, right up there with Fawful and Antasma. Just when you think the game is over, Dimentio comes in and steals the show. Not to mention, he is cool. Easy top 10 material.

20 Iggy Koopa

Iggy is the only one on my list who really deserves it because he is the best in the franchise. Koopalings shouldn't get hated for "ruining" original bosses because they really didn't. Luckily, Iggy isn't the least popular of the Koopalings (sorry to Wendy), and being 21st isn't even bad because he somehow outranked Diddy Kong. Iggy may be the 7th guy in the Koopa troop on this list, but Iggy Koopa deserves to be respected - literally and figuratively. He may start the robot war.

Koopalings don't deserve hate. They are 10 times better than Pink Gold Peach, Metal Mario, Cat Peach, Baby Daisy, Baby Rosalina, and Tanooki Mario. Also, if you look closer at their boss fights, you can see that they are actually very unique. The hate for the Koopalings is extremely undeserved. Koopaling haters make me even more sick than Peach haters, and that's saying something.

21 Vivian

How can Vivian be lower than Peach? I am sick of those Peach fanboys who go, "Oh, Peach is hot and Peach is pink, which is my favorite color." In this case, NO! Peach sucks and made Mario Party 9 even worse.

She's cute and shy. She kinda reminds me of myself sometimes.

She's such a great character and is my favorite partner in TTYD!

22 Baby Yoshi

This guy is adorable! In New Super Mario Bros. U, he sings to the song! Isn't that so cute? Sure, he's hard to keep safe, but he's adorable! #makebabyyoshipopular

I don't know why people are hating Baby Yoshi. He's so cute! Maybe think of those idiots, Mario and Toad.
Oh yeah, and Toad is SO annoying, plus Yoshi is cute, and any other Yoshi is better than the rest.

I love Baby Yoshi. He is so cute!

If you like Yoshi, trust me, you're going to love Baby Yoshi. He is basically Yoshi, just smaller. He is my favorite character in Mario history, and lots of people say that he's theirs too!

23 Diddy Kong Diddy Kong is a fictional character in the Donkey Kong series of video games, first appearing in the 1994 game Donkey Kong Country.

Diddy Kong rocks! Whoever said that he sucks is a fat idiot because many people want him to return to Mario Kart 9.

I'm glad Diddy's above all seven of those garbage Koopalings. It's annoying how those stupid seven stole the monkey's spot in Mario Kart 8.

Diddy Kong vs. Kirby.

Why would that be a great Death Battle? If you ask me why, it's because both are extremely cute.

24 Mr. L Mr. L, also known as the Green Thunder, is the major supporting antagonist of Super Paper Mario. He is an evil alter ego of Luigi as a result of being brainwashed by Nastasia, and the creator of Brobot.

Mr. L should've been at the top of this list, and I hope he is soon. Mr. L is one of my favorite characters in ANY video game. He is just an excellent character. He was interesting, had a certain smug charm to him, and made the perfect final boss for Super Paper Mario.

Oh, thank God, I'm not the only one who absolutely LOVES Mr. L and his smug charm. He is, bar none, my favorite Mario character of all time. What an underrated character. He has such an awesome personality and an amazing theme song. I hope this gets to the top soon.

25 Blumiere a.k.a. Count Bleck

Unlike countless other villains in the Mario franchise, Count Bleck, also known as Blumiere, has a lot of depth. Instead of acting entirely on a lust for power or revenge, the Count is a tragic villain who was broken by his thwarted love. Although that doesn't make him any less of a villain, it does make him more interesting than your typical doomsday baddie.

Most Mario villains are interested in domination and taking over kingdoms, but not Count Bleck. He has different reasons for being a villain. The story between Count Bleck and a girl he fell in love with (I'm not going to spoil who she is) is very touching and amazing.
