Best Melodic Power Metal Songs

These songs have melodic qualities and emotions ranging from sadness to anger.
The Top Ten
1 The Bard's Song (In the Forest) - Blind Guardian

No doubt, Blind Guardian stuff is the closest to the initial idea of power metal as created by Blackmore and Dio in the mid 70s.

'The Bard's Song', as well as 'Nightfall', 'Otherland' and 'Skalds and Shadows' are the best examples of melodic power metal today. These Guardian songs have so much in common with 'Gates of Babylon' by Rainbow.

2 Gates of Babylon - Rainbow

The excellent melodic qualities of Blackmore's pieces come from the Bach scales/sequences he usually uses.
In "Gates of Babylon" and "Stargazer" he created that magical oriental feel by using the so called 'double harmonic scale' (featuring radial symmetry).

Let's face it and be proud - Ritchie Blackmore is the best songwriter in metal and one of the best in music history. His songs are so perfectly written that should be compiled in a ‘Songwriting Handbook’ and studied carefully. Everything is flawless: there's nothing to add, nothing to remove. His melodies always ‘know where to go’ for a maximum effect. Pay attention to how Ritchie starts the songs (his riffs grab you), how he leads you to a marvelous culmination, and above all how he finishes the songs (brilliant finish every time - something that many songwriters neglect).

3 Sinner - Theocracy
4 Father Time - Stratovarius

I don't think this song has more melodic qualities than a typical power metal song in order to be in the top 10, let alone #3.

I'm not saying it's a bad song - just nothing special in terms of melodic qualities.

I think we should put outstanding and unique melodies on this list.

No need to have another metal qualities... Timo on vocals is just enough.

5 Rainbow Eyes - Rainbow

This melody is so beautiful and unique that is almost transcendental. It's like a music message from the center of the Universe. And Dio earned the nickname Mr. Golden Voice for a reason.

6 Diabolus - Primal Fear

One of the best metal songs written after 2000 - epic and melodic, yet heavy and intense. Everything's perfect - riff, vocals, solo.

7 Melancholy - Iced Earth
8 Full Moon - Sonata Arctica
9 When a Hero Cries - Edguy
10 Fortuneteller - Deep Purple

There's nothing more exciting than exploring Deep Purple's deep tracks - like this one. Most people know only Smoke On The Water but Deep Purple have tons of more elegant and sophisticated songs - lots of them are (melodic) power metal.

‘Fortuneteller’ is a real treat - exquisite melodic riff, awesome melody, and of course - great vocals (Joe Lynn Turner). Ritchie Blackmore knows how to write melodic metal stuff - classy melodic and not cheesy melodic (unlike many power metal bands).

The Contenders
11 Center of the Universe - Kamelot

This song is epic! awesome keyboard riff in the intro, catchy chorus and beautiful piano outro

12 The Love from a Dead Orchestra - Versailles
13 My Last Sunrise - Demons and Wizards

Melodic and angry at the same time; all emotions in one song - from melancholy and sadness to anger and rage. The song is outstanding as well as the vocal performance (Hansi Kürsch). In fact, this is one of the best metal vocal performances of all time.

14 Tallulah - Sonata Arctica
15 The Time of the Oath - Helloween
16 I Am - Theocracy
17 Galaxies Unknown - Power Quest
18 Wolf and Raven - Sonata Arctica
19 Unchain the Rain - Altaria

This is the best song I've ever heard! This band should be more popular!

20 Dracula - Iced Earth
21 I Want Out - Helloween

No word can say

22 Nightfall - Blind Guardian
23 Forever - Kamelot

I fought it would be hard to chose but then I saw "Forever".

Based on the Solveig's Song from Peer Gynt, the melody is a blast. it s one of the songs that made me get font of melodic power.

24 Rebirth - Angra

Inspiration. This music give a travel in my deepest thoughts.

25 Carry On - Angra
