Best Norwegian Black Metal Bands

The Top Ten
1 Mayhem Mayhem is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1984 in Oslo, regarded as one of the pioneers of the Norwegian black metal scene. The band is also known for the infamous events surrounding them including the 1991 suicide of vocalist Dead (in which former guitarist Euronymous took pictures of Dead's... read more

Most important band in this list. If there was no Mayhem there would be no Black Metal. They set the landmark for the Black Metal genre and its culture.

Before blindly voting for Mayhem, ask yourself this: Do you even listen to anything other than De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas?

Mayhem has continued to produce great music to this day...esoteric warfare was a great album as were all of it's predecessors

2 Burzum Burzum is an influential black metal solo project of Norwegian musician and writer Varg Vikernes. Burzum came to prominence at the beginning of the Norwegian Black Metal scene in the early 1990s. Vikernes was imprisoned for 21 years for the murder of Mayhem guitarist Euronymous, and charges of church... read more

The purest black metal there is. As for Varg Vikernes, you either love him or you hate him. People say a lot of stupid things. But his music is absolutely True Norwegian Black Metal through and through. Albums like Filosofem and Det Som Engang Var are absolute masterpieces of BM.

Burzum should be number 1 out of the five main Norwegian bands.
The Lord of darkness, Count Grishnackh aka Varg Vikernes. The great Burzum
Immortal, Emperor, Darkthrone, Mayhem

I think Burzum is greatest black metal band, all of his albums are great, music and lyrics so beautiful. I think, Burzum must be on first position.

3 Darkthrone Darkthrone is a Norwegian black metal band. It formed in 1986 as a death metal band under the name Black Death. In 1991, the band embraced a black metal style influenced by Bathory and Celtic Frost and became one of the leading bands in the Norwegian black metal scene. Their first three black metal... read more

Darkthrone released the very first "True Black Metal" full length A Blaze In The Northern Sky. As far as my knowledge goes, The mayhem demos and Deathcrush were out there but this was the first LP that hit the black metal scene. Every album after this is an amazing piece of Norwegian black metal art. you must own the unholy trinity!

Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger is the purest embodiment of norwegian black metal ideology. Moronic creatures who mindlessly voted for Mayhem know absolutely nothing about black metal.

4 Emperor Emperor was a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1991, regarded as highly influential by critics and emerging black metal bands.

Emperor had created a unique style in Extreme Metal. From a raw, atmospheric and symphonic Black Metal to a Progressive and complex Metal. One most important Metal band ever...

Emperor Is King! They have truly the most complex music of All in black metal history. Also the are most pure in the way their black metal presents itself.

I'm surprised to see these guys at number 1 they are my favorite black meral band of all time

5 Immortal Immortal is a black metal band from Bergen, Norway, founded in 1990 by frontman and guitarist Abbath Doom Occulta and former guitarist Demonaz Doom Occulta.

Love these guys, especially the period when Abbath was on guitar and lead vocals. Sons of Northern Darkness got me hooked. I'm not a huge fan of the "Symphonic" Black Metal style, and instead prefer the full in assault. Don't care for the typical grunting black metal vocal style for effect, and much prefer the story telling vocals of a band like Immortal.

Awesome style... Kick-ass drums with awesome guitars and great vocal range and with adventerous lyrics about the adventures of "Blashyrkh" actually they are lyrically better than other black metal bands in my mind

6 Satyricon Satyricon is a Norwegian black metal band formed in Oslo, Norway in 1991 by vocalist Satyr and drummer Frost. The band's first three albums typify the Norwegian black metal style. Since their fourth album in 1999, the band has moved towards a more traditional heavy metal style.

I prefer their new stuff over their old. guess I'm too mainstream. working my way to the more tradisional black metal, like immortal and emperor. I suppose you could compare them to metallica. old stuff loved by true fans, and new stuff liked by mainstreamers. I listen to pretty much anything from queen to cannibal corpse, but haven't gotten too deep into black metal yet.

Here only because of their early stuffs (Nemesis Divina etc. ). I hate their new style, now, they sound more like industrial metal.

7 Dimmu Borgir Dimmu Borgir is a Norwegian symphonic black metal band from Oslo, Norway, formed in 1993. The name is derived from Dimmuborgir, a volcanic formation in Iceland, the name of which means "dark cities" or "dark castles/fortresses" in Icelandic, Faroese and Old Norse.

Awesome band...great musicians...groundbreaking early albums up to In Sorte Diablo...last one sucked...waiting for ages for new stuff. Should be at number One...but other bands in list are very good Black/ Death Metal rules...

Old dimmu borgir is best. New one is okay but not that good

8 Gorgoroth Gorgoroth is a Norwegian black metal band based in Bergen. Formed in 1992 by Infernus, the band is named after the dead plateau of evil and darkness in the land of Mordor (a fictional location in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings).

Infernus (the best norwegian black metal guitarist), Gaahl (one of the best black metal vocalists), Grim (the 2nd best black metal drummer) and many more who played for gorgoroth, Is there any doubt about their awesomeness?

If this list was solely based on music, Gorgoroth deserves a much higher placing considering how strong their first 3-4 albums actually are.

Probably the most darkest of the blacks, Gorgoroth is an excellent band that should be at the top 3.

9 Enslaved Enslaved is a Norwegian extreme metal band formed in Haugesund in June 1991. They are currently based in Bergen, Norway.
10 1349 1349 is a Norwegian black metal band from Oslo, Norway, formed in 1997. The band's name comes from the year the Black Death reached Norway.

If you miss any of Frost's(Satyricon and 1349) kick-ass double bass drumming, you should definitely visit 1349. Although they have also been experimental over the years, the blast beats FROST is famous for can be evidently heard in their songs, with a lot more grooves, than just blast beats. Listen to Sculptor Of Flesh from their album Hellfire, to get the idea.

The Newcomers

? The Kovenant
The Contenders
11 Carpathian Forest

A RAW black metal band! The vocalist is completely insane! (I saw them live)

Awesome thrash sound, evil vocals, and are almost perfect live

12 Ulver

Despite only releasing two proper black metal albums before moving onto electronic music Ulver is the greatest black metal band of all time. The album Bergtatt blends black metal with folk music effortlessly without one element overshadowing the other, and as a result it is the best black metal album ever recorded.

They released the best Black Metal albums of all time, a brilliant, yet unappreciated BM album, and a debut EP that knocks the socks off most other bands... Not to mention their mastering of basically every genre there is. And what have Mayhem done? Released one decent album that's extremely hyped because of the bands history, a good EP and a couple of mediocre albums.

13 Taake

By far the top Black Metal act as of right now. His style is definitely orthodox non-symphonic, but is one of the most diverse and refreshing act's out there.

Dude taake is easily on of the greatest black metal bands ever. Hoest is the greatest black metal vocalist ever.

14 Arcturus
15 Old Man's Child Old Man's Child is a Norwegian black metal band from the city of Oslo. The band is the brainchild of Galder who is the only permanent member of the band now.

They are very good, must be in the top 10

16 Windir Windir was a black metal band from Sogndal, Norway. The band combined black metal with folk music and mythology.

Actually Windir and Emperor should both be on number one

17 Tsjuder
18 Thorns
19 Borknagar

Such an underrated band. Their self titled album, URD, Winter Thrice, and The Olden Domain are all downright classic albums. Mayhem have De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, but what other full length classic do they have? Arguably Esoteric Warfare, yes (I absolutely love that album), but the mix in styles between prog, power, and black demonstrated by borknagar simply outclasses them.

20 Ancient

Combination of 4 bad bands: Mayhem, Burzum, Bathory, Darkthrone, but this band it's amazing

21 Throne of Katarsis
22 Antestor
23 Gehenna
24 Ragnarok
25 Frosthardr
