Lemon Robert's lyrics are poetic and beautiful he should be on top along with Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Carole King, Paul McCartney and Freddie Mercury.
Stairway to Heaven is one of the greatest songs ever written.V 1 Comment
How dare you place Elliott Smith between Shakira and Bryan Adams and for that matter how Josh Groban came to be number 1 is beyond me this is the slow crumble of taste and purity that will be gone within the next few years. Start building these factories because I think the world is ready for manufactured people now.
He doesn't need a list to be recognized by the intellectual minority which has gratifying passion for words and music - as the best singer/songwriter of all time!
Easily in the top ten.. Not that it would matter, this list is bogus.V 2 Comments
People of different generations loved his many classics... They sound as fresh and soulfully good now as ever. He not only was an extremely gifted songwriter. He recorded and performed live superbly with that God given voice... It is between him and McCartney bottom line.
Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney! Melody JUST doesn't get ANY BETTER! - frank

Jeff Lynne is way beyond genius. If you listen to Tom Petty talk about Jeff Lynne and his many talents, you know he is very sincere. There are many amazing songwriters past and present but all I can say is check out all his albums from The Idle Race to Jeff Lynne's ELO and notice the many changes, every album stands on it's own merits and I fully believe he has never made a bad album. A few are pretty good, some amazing, some spellbinding. Even now he has the ability to surprise us with something different. Sharon Osbourne once mentioned (and I'm paraphrasing) that he is not a showman. He has trouble loosening up on stage. It's too much for him. It's when he walks into a studio is when he lets all his emotions out. His songs are full of emotion. I totally agree with her. I feel the heartache on Face The Music and A New World Record. At the time he was apparently going thru a breakup and you can hear despair on those albums. But he is equally prolific when he is happy. Even when he ...more
This man has written and still writes beautiful music. I fell in love with this man's music back in the 1970's because of complex sounds of his music, that is using orchestral instruments in a rock style, and using rock instruments in an orchestral style. I love to listen to Jeff's music and basically dissect it by listening to each instrument as it plays, listening carefully to different vocal parts and noting the rhythm of each of his songs. I also like how he uses non musical sounds to be included in his music.
Jeff and ELO have so many hits. Much more than many listed higher. ELO music continues today to get air time and is used in movies and commercials. Many of these others will not be getting air time 20-30 years from now. Jeff and ELO has stood the test of time.
The genius of Jeff Lynne's songwriting is in his "hooks." His tunes are memorable and singable. Except for the high notes that he can still hit at age 68 on his current tour. Love him. He's the best songwriter and producer of all time.V 24 Comments
Chester Bennington is a singer with a powerfull voice... It is unique and the live quality of his voice is just good as his studio voice. For me he is the #1 from the modern, living rock artists! I know we can't say that he is better than MJ or someone else, but he have an unique voice like the legends.
Amazing lyrics and vocals, definitely number one. - lukestheman4
Thom Yorke has such a unique voice and like the rest of his band Radiohead, he's not afraid to really experiment. So many artists these days stick with one sound, but Yorke and friends are masters of true creativity in songwriting.
One of the best people! Just check out these songs:
Fake Plastic Trees
How To Disappear Completely
Thinking About You
He's so underrated, better than Swift and Bellamy.
He made all of these brilliant songs... - fuddoxV 1 Comment
This placement shows everything wrong with the current generation. Brian should be number 1, without a shadow of a doubt. Disgusting that he isn't. It says a lot about the kind of people who are voting on this list.
Just listen to the memories in your head. Hear those melodies and harmonies? You can thank Brian Wilson for those tunes that just enter your head while taking a shower. This man deserves to be in the top 5.
Should be top 20. I believe this is higher than he was last time I looked at this list, I hope he's moving up.
While not possessing a reputation as a great lyricist, (he worked with many collaborators including Gary Usher,Tony Asher, Van Dyke Parks and his fellow Beach Boys), Brian Wilson has a gift for composing. He has written, not only memorable major and minor melodies, but also modal (eg.'Our Prayer') and modern music, (e.g.'The Elements:Fire'), pieces which have also gained notability.V 12 Comments
Makes you wonder just how many more great songs he would have written had he lived longer. Songs like Time in a Bottle, Operator, I Got a Name, and I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song are gorgeous, and Croce had a great sense of humor with songs like Roller Derby Queen, Rapid Roy, and of course Leroy Brown...
I can't believe that Jim Croce is below Beyonce, Taylor Swift or Madonna... His songs were and will be eternal, he is one of the best songwriters of all time, he doesn't deserve the top 58, he deserves to be in the top 10 or even top 15 or 20 but not below!
Are you people serious? Jim Croce sang about the common man, his hits are timeless and his voice is one of a kind. Very few are better than him
My man from San Diego... I was born half year after his death, but love all of his songs. Playing along with the guitar is so nice.V 2 Comments
Look at all of the songs he wrote by himself. He's the best songwriter ever - Frantic713
Hauntingly beautiful songs. Complex yet subtle melodies.
He does write his own songs word for word. every 1 of them means something & to the point either fight to what you believe in, love, dream, stand up, or pain to survive. - csV 1 Comment
As great a singer as Ray was (and that is incredibly great), most of his songs were written by other people.
His songs have passion and feeling. The lyrics reach out to people the world over and let them know that someone else is feeling like they do.
I feel like Billie Joe Armstrong does not get enough credit for his songwriting. The political lyrics are just one example. It is enough to actually READ the lyrics of basically every song off "21st Century Breakdown" and most of "American Idiot" as well as many other songs to see the true genius in this guy. Seriously, it is so much more then punk...
Because He Is Period. "do you know what worth fighting for but not worth dieing for " that is one of many examples why.V 4 Comments
