Best Disney Movie Remakes

Disney has recently made it a big part of their agenda to remake some of their biggest classics. Why? Who knows? Probably money. Anyways, these things keep getting made and people keep paying to see them. This list compiles the best live action remakes produced by Walt Disney Pictures.
The Top Ten
1 Cinderella (2015)

The newest addition (as of March 2015, anyways) also happens to be the best one yet (In my opinion, of course). It seems Disney still has the magic.

I liked it. At first I didn't, but after giving it another try, I changed my mind about the film. It's pretty good!

I honestly didn't like this that much. It wasn't the worst movie I've watched though. This was an okay movie.

2 Freaky Friday (2003)

This one was a surprise critical success and received pretty rave reviews when it was released in 2003.

I've never watched the original, but I liked this movie. It was great!

I've watched this twice on the television. It's pretty fun to watch.

3 The Parent Trap (1998)

Before Lindsay Lohan became the hot mess she is now, she was the cute pair of twins from this charming remake. The original movie was released in 1961.

4 101 Dalmatians (1996)

The first real remake attempt by Disney turned out to be a pretty memorable movie in its own right. Casting Glenn Close as Cruella de Ville couldn't have been a better decision.

5 The Jungle Book (2016)

The only modern Disney remake not to be a soulless dead lifeless pile of bleach.

Depends on what you mean by remake. This is actually the 3rd film adaptation of The Jungle Book

Should be number 1. Has a perfect cast besides that Neil Sethi kid!

6 Beauty and the Beast (2017)

Wow, I really thought this would be first! I watched this on the plane and even cried a little. Such a touching story. Belle being my all-time favourite Disney princess, you can't imagine how excited I was when I heard that this enchanting story was getting its chance to come to life! I definitely love the songs, especially because Emma Watson was singing them. I also love how they managed to match Lumiere's charisma to the 1991 movie! They really captured the love between the hopeless romantic Belle and the misunderstood beast. The actor for Gaston was good too! The whole storyline really impressed me

Yeah, I love Cinderella, don't get me wrong. But Beauty and the Beast is an all time favorite classic all around the world! It's more we'll known than Cinderella. And the hype for when this trailer was released, was so much more than any other live action remake. Disney really has come a long way, This movie explains why. No other one can.

7 Mighty Joe Young (1998)

The original 1949 movie was released by RKO Pictures, but since this one is Disney-made it still counts.

8 Race to Witch Mountain

This 2009 film is a remake of the 1975 film, 'Escape to Witch Mountain' and stars Dwayne Johnson.

9 Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

My Favorite Martian is for idiots. Homeward Bound should be much higher!

10 My Favorite Martian (1999)

My Favorite Martian is one of my favorite movies as a kid. It hold up as a pretty entertaining movie to this day, I'll tell you.

The Contenders
11 Disney's A Christmas Carol

Believe it or not this motion capture digimation is Disney's third involvment in a film adaptation of A Christmas Carol following Mickey's Christmas Carol and Muppet Christmas Carol.

12 Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Arguably the movie responsible for the current pack of live action remakes from Disney. 25% of the movies on this list only exist because of the success of Alice.

Not so much a remake, more an adaptation, much in the same way that Disney's A Christmas Carol is an adaptation not a remake.

It's not entirely a remake of the original 1951 animated film but it does essentially act as one.

13 Pete's Dragon (2016)

This was a remake? Didn't know that. Well, I guess this one's alright. I wouldn't mind watching this again.

14 Flubber

I can't believe Schaffrillas Productions gave this movie a 2/10 on Letterboxd. I'm hoping he doesn't do anything similar to George of the Jungle, The Parent Trap, Holes, Freaky Friday, Sky High, National Treasure, the first two Pirates movies, or even Tron or the Narnia trilogy.

This 1997 comedy film starring the late Robin Williams (R.I.P. , sweet friend) is a remake of the 1961 film 'The Absent-Minded Professor'.

15 Aladdin (2019)

I know this is an unpopular opinion but this really did justice to the OG Aladdin. They improved some details from the OG version like Jasmine's role as a character for example. And as for the songs, the Aladdin in this movie really does sound like the Aladdin we know. The real scene-stealer here is Jasmine (Naomi Scott). I like how she got her own song and it became one of my favorite Disney songs alongside Be Prepared and I'll Make a Man out of You. In fact, this has the best Disney live action soundtrack by far. It's not as good as its predecessor, but I liked this one.

16 Angels in the Outfield
17 Inspector Gadget (1999)

This movie sucked. It got negative reviews, it followed basically nothing from the cartoon, and the worst part is, YOU CAN SEE DR. CLAW'S FACE THROUGHOUT THE MOVIE! Inspector Gadget's name isn't even Inspector Gadget (it's John Brown), and Penny literally does nothing. I'm a fan of the 1983 cartoon and I decided to maybe give it a try. BAD IDEA. Wait, here's my favorite part: Don Adams (the original voice of Inspector Gadget) was in this movie, but get this; they cast him as Brain and gave him one line. I'm not kidding. ONE LINE.

I may not remember much about the movie itself, but I remember that McDonald's had some SWEET Inspector Gadget toys!

I had quite a fondness for this movie as a child. It's a remake of the animated television show from the 1980's.

18 The Lion King (2019)

I feel bad for the people behind this. This movie features an all-star cast and crew and they really did a fantastic job. The VFX are outstanding, the voice acting is top-notch, and the songs (for the most part) did justice to the original Lion King, which has some of the best soundtrack in a musical movie. This movie does have flaws like the lack of emotion due to the CGI being too realistic and the song, "Be Prepared" was a total misfire, and that was my favourite song in the Lion King. The story may be a shot-for-shot remake with barely anything new, but the execution was at its best. I feel bad for those who worked on this because over the years, this movie received so much hate by the public in general. They don't understand why a remake exists. Remakes exists to pay tribute to the animated classic and just show us how technology is improving and how Disney can transform animation to live-action. The plot can be the same, but look for the execution. Yes, it's not as good as the ...more

19 Mulan (2020)
20 Peter Pan (2003)

It may not be Disney but this film feels a lot like the Disney classic.

21 Pinocchio (2022)
22 The Little Mermaid (2023)
23 Dumbo (2019)
