Greatest Movies by Big-name Directors

Why are these men famous? For these movies, of course!
The Top Ten
1 Saving Private Ryan - Steven Spielberg

Spielberg is noted with some of the greatest WWII films to yet be made, and this by far is his best. With incredible graphics and honest display, WWII has not been so well shown, and this film still falls short of the sacrifice given by the soldiers.

I think this is his second best--it's still great. At number 1 I'd put Schindlers List. One of the best movies of ALL time

2 The Passion of the Christ - Mel Gibson

Gibson is one of the greatest film producer/directors of all time, and he correctly displays the death of our Lord where others have failed trying. True to the Bible, and still somewhat lacking, the Passion is one of the greatest films of all time.

3 Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope - George Lucas

Lucas has created a series unmatched by any other of its kind. With an allstar cast and incredible graphics for its time, it just goes to show you: Star Wars is George Lucas, and George Lucas is Star Wars.

4 Titanic - James Cameron

Depicting one of the saddest events in history, intertwining it with a love story... all done in great cinematography with incredible music... James Cameron has made a timeless classic.

5 The Godfather - Francis Ford Coppola

Duh! Francis Ford Coppola. He did The Outsiders!

6 United 93 - Paul Greengrass

A story that should be told, of great American patriotism and sacrifice, Paul Greengrass has created one of the most emotionaly moving testaments to American pride and freedom in history.

7 Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Peter Jackson

Peter Jackson took one of the most intricate, detailed, complex plots, and made one of the most impressive films of all time, the third, Return of the King, winning thirteen Oscar Awards, including best motion picture.

8 The Dark Night - Christopher Nolan

Any superhero would be proud to be directed by Nolan.

9 The Godfather Part II - Francis Ford Coppola
10 A Clockwork Orange - Stanley Kubrick
The Contenders
11 Schindler's List - Steven Spielberg

Another Spielberg film is in the top ten, which shouldn't be a surprise. Depicting the Holocaust, not an easy task, was done exceptionally well, showing the horror, tragedy and sacrifice of WWII which none have ventured to display before.

Such a profound and important movie!

12 Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back - George Lucas
13 Big Fish - Tim Burton
14 Braveheart - Mel Gibson

Gibson also makes the list twice with the riveting story of William Wallace, of which only he could do.

15 Apocalpyse Now - Francis Ford Coppola
16 The Graduate - Mike Nichols
17 2001: A Space Odyssey - Stanley Kubrick
18 The Bourne Identity - Paul Greengrass

Another Greengrass masterpiece makes the list, the one that made him famous. Great plot with incredible graphics, The Bourne Series tops many, many action films.

19 Toy Story - John Lasseter
20 Raging Bull - Martin Scorsese
21 The Deer Hunter - Michael Cimino
22 Red Cliff - John Woo
23 Mystic River - Clint Eastwood
24 Network - Sidney Lumet
25 Breathless - Jean-Luc Godard
