His career went beyond the numbers, as a kid his father was an Air Force Captain and b-52 pilot Robert James Thomas and died during a mission in the Vietnam War. Derrick during his NFL Career dedicated his career as a role model to his fans, his reward was being named NFL 1993 Man of the Year. DT, more than a player, he was a gentleman.

In retirement, he was a great host for HBO's Inside the NFL, but before that he was a great commander for the Kansas City Chiefs. In 1964, in ONLY 14 games he threw for 30 touchdowns. 2 years earlier, he arrived to the Dallas Texans who we're to become the Chiefs in 1963 after not being wanted anymore by the Steelers and the Browns. Dawson made those teams pay by leading the AFL in touchdowns (29) and yards per attempt (8.9) and was named the AFL MVP by The Sporting News. He led the Texans to the AFL Championship win over the Houston Oilers in double overtime.
