Best Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Characters

The Top Ten
1 Legolas Legolas is a character in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium. He is a Sindarin Elf of the Woodland Realm and one of nine members of the Fellowship of the Ring. He has been portrayed by Orlando Bloom in the live action movies.

The best though. He has so many cool fighting scenes and is hands down the most savage character, besides Thranduil. I don't know how Thranduil himself got so low on the list. Only 30? Top 5 for me. Same with Sam. Only 13? He's the emotional support hobbit!

But still, Legolas is literally the best. His archery skills are fantastic, and he's also incredibly flexible. He's also played by Orlando Bloom, which makes him so much better because he is an amazing actor.

I just wish Glorfindel was in the LOTR. Also one of the best characters in The Silmarillion and is replaced by Arwen in the scene in the river. They should make a Silmarillion movie directed by Peter Jackson. I really want to see that. It's sad though that he's considered ugly in Elvish standards, which he isn't. I mean, who else can fight orcs while keeping their hair completely flawless?

2 Thorin Oakenshield

Deserves silver, this Thorin. But do not forget Aragorn! Animations and charms are what this series needs to offer as well if it is to be as great as the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Thorin is the best character from the 6 movies. He is so awesome, and his battle scenes are definitely the best. I also like his personality the best.

Some people don't like Thorin, but I don't see how. He is just so human. He may not be the greatest person, but he is willing to grow.

3 Smaug Smaug is a fictional character and the primary antagonist in J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit. In Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy, he was portrayed via motion capture by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Forget Gollum. Smaug is the one who steals the show!

4 Sauron Sauron is the title character and main antagonist of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Originally a servant of the first Dark Lord, Morgoth. Morgoth was later defeated and Sauron fled. He later came back to Middle Earth and took over as the new Dark Lord by using a Ring of Power. He was later... read more

Without Sauron, there is no Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit because if Sauron weren't there, there'd be no One Ring to Rule them All, which means no story, which means no movie. Also, technically Sauron was a Dark Lord before Melkor because the first book Sauron was mentioned in was the Hobbit, which came out in 1939. The Silmarillion was published in 2003. So, if you look at it that way, Sauron was the FIRST Dark Lord.

A great enemy, good to rank well.

5 Bilbo Baggins Bilbo Baggins is the title character and protagonist of J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit, as well as a supporting character in The Lord of the Rings. He was the first Hobbit to become famous in the world at large, and was one of the few to visit the The Undying Lands across the ocean. In film,... read more

I mean, he IS Bilbo Baggins of Bag End. A great role model for 'younglings' like myself or just anyone in general.

I love hobbits, like a lot. Bilbo Baggins is my soulmate.

6 Kili
7 Gandalf Gandalf the Grey, later known as Gandalf the White, is a fictional character and one of the protagonists in J. R. R. Tolkien's novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He was an Istar, sent by the West in the Third Age to combat the threat of Sauron, as well as leader of the Fellowship of the Ring... read more

How is Gandalf below a CGI Orc who's not even in the book? Not to bash on The Hobbit movies, they're pretty good, but could never match LOTR. Gandalf should be higher though, he's the only character who's a main character in both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

8 Azog Azog is a character in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium. He was a Orc chieftain who lived in Moria until his death in T.A. 2799. He is referred to in a single remark by Gandalf to Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit: "Your grandfather Thrór was killed, you remember, in the mines of Moria by Azog the Goblin."... read more

10 Aragorn Aragorn II, the son of Arathorn II and Gilraen, is a fictional character from J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium and is one of the main protagonists of The Lord of the Rings. He was a great ranger and warrior, and as Isildur's heir he bore the shards of Narsil, reforged and renamed Andúril, in the War... read more

11 Frodo Frodo Baggins is a fictional character and is the main protagonist of J. R. R. Tolkien's novel The Lord of the Rings. He was a Hobbit of the Shire during the Third Age. He was also a Ring-bearer, a best friend to Samwise Gamgee, and one of the three Hobbits who sailed from Middle-earth to the Uttermost... read more

Frodo is the best character in Lord of the Rings. He is brave, nice, and I like him the most. GO FRODO!

12 Fili

Kili's brother. I don't know a Fili quote other than "Kili." I still think he's a good character though.

Why do not many people vote for him? He is my very favorite character.

13 Sam Samwise Gamgee, known as Sam, was a Hobbit of the Shire. He was Frodo Baggins' gardener and best friend. Sam proved himself to be Frodo's closest and most dependable companion, the most loyal of the Fellowship of the Ring, and also played a necessary role in protecting Frodo and destroying the One Ring... read more

Samwise Gamgee, where to begin? I say Sam has a heart of gold. He is a very loyal friend and follows Frodo to the end. "There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for."

He is a very good friend. He is definitely my favorite. Why is he not higher on the list?

14 Balin
15 Gollum Gollum is a fictional character from J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium. He was introduced in the 1937 children's fantasy novel The Hobbit, and became an important supporting character in its sequel, The Lord of the Rings. In Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, he is portrayed via motion... read more
16 Gimli
17 Boromir
18 Pippin
19 Tauriel
20 Thranduil

He doesn't deserve 20th. He should be at least first. Yeah, he's better than Aragorn. Aragorn is just a dumb guy I paid no attention to.

Lee Pace is in my top five favorite actors, so when he played my favorite character in my favorite movie series, I was like, "YAY GO LEE PACE!"

21 Saruman Saruman the White is a fictional character and a major antagonist in J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings. In the film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, he was portrayed by Sir Christopher Lee.
22 Faramir
23 Elrond
