As far as I know, the only reason was to broaden musical horizons. They used to do pure death metal and even some black metal. But now they're prog rock. In 2002 they recorded two albums at the same time - Deliverance and Damnation. These albums were completely different and showed the bands two sides. This was obviously a while ago though and they continued their death growls until Heritage album (2011). I guess underneath all those death growls, Mikael is a 70s prog kid at heart

His growls AND cleans are amazing. People need to stop complaining that he doesn't growl any more.
