Top Ten MMORPG Games

MMORPGs, or Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games, let you create your own hero, level up, and go on epic adventures with other players from all over the world. These games have evolved a lot since the 90s, with awesome graphics, rich stories, and addictive gameplay that make you want to play more.

In this list, you've picked the best MMORPG games ever. From classic games that defined the genre to new games that changed the way we play, these games will blow your mind and keep you hooked for hours. Whether you're a hardcore MMO fan or a newbie to the genre, you'll find something for you on this list.
The Top Ten
1 World of Warcraft

Nothing can compare to World of Warcraft. I can confidently say that WoW is the best online game of all time and still holds that title. Some other MMOs may have more depth and certain aspects that WoW lacks, but WoW remains the most enjoyable video game I have ever played. I've been playing since the BETA phase and have taken breaks from time to time. Even if you become bored and stop playing, I have no doubt that you will return to the game after thinking about it for a month. It's difficult to pinpoint exactly why WoW is so incredibly fun, but I will continue playing it for as long as it exists, with breaks, of course. I could go on and on about the game itself, not just expressing my opinion on its greatness, but if you haven't played this game, you really should! It's the most popular game of all time, and I mean everyone has heard of WoW. There's a reason why tens of millions of players actively engage with this game.

2 Entropia Universe

I've been playing this game for over six years now. I've tried other games in between, but I keep coming back to Entropia Universe. The game is free to play, and there are no limitations when not depositing money. However, it's quite tough and requires smart play and a lot of patience if you choose this path. I chose this as a personal challenge and have managed so far, even acquiring most of the nice goodies in the game.

With respect to gameplay, this game, much like real life, doesn't guide you on what to do next. There are some beginner missions and challenges, but that's about it. Some players might find this to be a drawback, feeling lost in the immense universe that consists of several planets. But for others, like me, this is the beauty of the game that keeps me playing. I determine what to do next, where, and how, and I progress my avatar accordingly. All of this is combined with really beautiful graphics and sceneries. I can only recommend this game to everyone who is up for a challenge.

3 Runescape

Personally, my favorite MMORPG is based purely on content. I have not seen a game with as much variety of things to do as this one. If I get bored with combat, I move on to skilling. If I get bored with skilling, I do a quest or two. If I get bored with that, I play a minigame - and the list goes on. Variety is not limited to the different types of activities but also the different ways they can be done. Take combat, for example: Soul Wars, Pest Control, Slaying, and straight-out Dagganoth fighting are just a few of dozens of ways it can be done. The only other game that even comes close in terms of variety is Mabinogi, which has been on a downward spiral since G3.

4 Dream Of Mirror Online

Wonderful game! The GMs are great and actually helpful. They actually ban hackers, if any. I haven't seen that many hackers, and any bugs are quickly fixed. The people who play it are fairly nice. I like how it's a social game, so levels don't always matter. You could be teamed up with a level 10 fencer who's a level 58 doctor. You never know.

The pets are awesome, and I like how they actually help you. I also like how some of the items in the item mall, such as costumes, don't disappear after a certain number of days, unless you buy the ones that say they do. No hassle having to buy the same costume over and over.

5 Guild Wars

Great game! I have been playing for over 6 years and am looking forward to Guild Wars 2. This game is not a grind game. You will only get to level 20, and it is mostly about creating a great build. Once you have learned the game, you can come up with solo builds that can be super fun. You will not have to go it alone in this game, as there are heroes that help you and you can add to your party list. It is all in your hands. You set them up with runes on their armor and such.

Despite the game being 6 years old, Guild Wars is definitely the best online game in my books, especially for serious players, and deserves a number 1 spot. It's balanced and well thought out. Unlike some games, you will never see things being sold by GW for real money that would advantage one player over another.

The first thing I look for in a game is the storyline. It has to be interesting and immersive to keep me wanting more. Guild Wars certainly offers you that. A very rich main story to follow, interesting and often difficult mission bonuses to complete, and lots of optional side quests. The game has a nice, clear direction to follow, which makes it fairly easy to get started.

All your characters are able to explore the beautifully detailed, vast world of three campaigns (each very different, yet connected), as well as an expansion pack. So there's a lot to do if you get them all. I've been playing almost every day for 2 years and still have a bit left to do. The game offers you huge content and great challenges to achieve, both in normal and hard modes, as well as elite areas that are mind-blowing. There is also a great choice of PvP options. The 7-hero system, or henchies, allows you to play solo with them or form parties with other players. Now, you can buy a "Mercenary Hero" pack that allows you up to 7 of your existing characters as heroes to play with. You can dress them in your best gear, or put costumes on them, and that's how they will appear alongside you. I've got all mine set up, and they look totally awesome!

I love Guild War's gameplay. The monsters are realistic, not cartoon-like. Although there's not a massive choice in character selection as in some games, it is simple, and what's there is very nice, especially for female characters. Some of the hairstyles are simply gorgeous.

The other thing I like is that lots of things are account-based. For example, if you join a guild, all of your characters automatically... more

6 League Of Legends

Riot is working hard on updates, and the population is going up drastically. This game is so fun and addicting! League of Legends is a perfect MOBA if you're into games like Dota 2, HoN, Smite, and Bloodline Champions. This game is getting better with every patch.

However, you've got to be careful with the community because it's really bad compared to Dota 2 and other games. This has been my main game for one or two years straight. This is definitely a game to try out, but it is a bit hard in the beginning. One of the best things is that there are no cash advantages, profile level advantages, or item advantages besides runes, masteries, and player experience. This game is going to last a long time.

7 Lineage 2

Addictive! I've been playing it for years now and never got tired of it. The graphics are the best I've ever seen. I've played on lots of different servers, ranging from as low as 1x to as high as 5000x. Private servers can be frustrating at times due to unbalanced classes, skills, glitches, and bugs.

However, if you love the game itself, you'll fall in love with the Lineage universe. I tried another very popular MMORPG game as well (no need to mention the name), but I couldn't stand it for more than a couple of days. If you play Lineage for a fair amount of time, every other game pales in comparison - be it graphics, soundtrack, or skills. Highly recommended!

8 Maplestory

MapleStory was the most addicting game I've ever played. Hats off to Wizet, and now to Nexon, who currently own it. You guys have designed, potentially, the best 2D MMORPG ever made and published on this Earth. It had the perfect trading system. Unlike most MMORPGs, like Runescape, there was a chat box in the trade and stores, so people could easily communicate.

The questing system was very organized, and the Job Advancement system was one of the best. I quit this game last August because, although it's one of the best games and I still love it, the people in it aren't nearly as great. There are some very immature and unethical players, and way too many bots/hackers. If these issues were fixed and the game were made more mature, I'd come back any day.

9 Final Fantasy XI

As long as this game has been out, it never fails to captivate me and pull me into an adventure that I won't ever forget. The people I meet, the monsters I battle, and the rewards I seek always give me something exciting and fulfilling to do. I've played maybe a dozen games listed on this chart, as well as a handful that I haven't seen on here. I must say that when everything is weighed out, FFXI just does something for me that none of these other games have come close to.

It brings me back to the level of excitement I had when I first started playing MMOs. Before I started looking too closely into mechanics, graphics, and the companies that run them, back when the game itself really felt like another world, I would wait all day just to relive it again that night! It's a great game, and I think anyone with an open mind and a heart yearning for adventure can really fall in love with it and its colorful characters.

10 Guild Wars 2

What. The. Heck. Guild Wars 2 being ranked this far on the list would be understandable, but only if it were 2012. You guys have about a month and a half to put HoT on the list, and you still get nothing. I have a lot of haters at my school who all say, "There's no PvP! There's no PvE!" May I ask exactly what an MMORPG even is if there isn't even PvE?

Unlike Destiny or WoW, Guild Wars 2 and HoT add a whole lot of other good game modes, like WvW, which is a mode built on killing enemies and taking buildings with siege weapons. Then there's the Living Story - a self-explanatory game mode where ArenaNet makes the story as they go. It's not choppy, like, "Flash! You are working with military units to track down a traitor in the government!" or "Flash! You are the Commander of the three most powerful organizations in the world, and you're off to kill an undead dragon!" I hope you all see the point and vote for better games to at least take the top three spots on this list.

The Contenders
11 Neverwinter

This has got to be one of the best FREE MMORPG games out there. The graphics and effects are nice, and it has a very engaging storyline with awesome quests. Plus, there's the Foundry. It virtually offers an infinite amount of quests, so you'll never get tired of it. PvP is awesome, and the guild system works amazingly well. I really don't know how this game is free, but I'm glad it is, and that's why I think it deserves to be in, at least, the top three.

I love this game. It's captivated me for months on end. My parents grounded me for a while just to get me off this game.

The whole Arc game system is awesome, and this game is fantastic.

12 Star Wars: The Old Republic

If one were to grind out this game, there would still be more than 600 hours' worth of gameplay. The storylines are great, each one completely different from the last. There are 8 storylines in all. The graphics aren't bad. There are 8 classes to choose from, plus you can be a Sith Lord. What more could you want?

The game takes elements from Mass Effect. The story changes based on your past choices. You can get to know your companions' pasts and even romance them, perhaps even more. Not to mention, new content is coming out every month. This game has so many possibilities, including zombies.

13 Aion: The Tower of Eternity

This is my second MMORPG game, and it's one of the best for several reasons: the story, dynamic graphics, and a very good atmosphere make it stand out. And that's just the beginning. The forthcoming new version 4.0 (on EU servers) will be released under the new title of Dark Betrayal. If you see what will be new, you simply have to agree with me that this is one of the best MMORPGs and should be among the top 5, in my opinion.

I have been playing Aion since November 2009. The visuals are fantastic and beautiful, the interface is easy to use, and the amount of grinding is just right. The social aspect, particularly legions, is super fun. The PvP is intense, and the characters can fly, offering truly three-dimensional gameplay. I tried Guild Wars 2 when it came out but lost interest after two months. Nothing comes close to Aion.

14 AdventureQuest Worlds

This game is one of my top favorite games. I'm at max level and have the most overpowered class in the game. If you're looking for a simple, not-so-laggy MMORPG to play, this is the game for you.

An awesome game with many quests and lots of monster-killing, you can get to level 50 and dominate PvP. You can also choose from different classes and abilities to kill things with.

Pay-to-win. Members get better and earlier enhancements. By buying boosts, you can save yourself time.

15 Dungeons & Dragons Online

Dungeons and Dragons Online challenges the modern notion that an MMORPG should be an easy experience you can quickly hop into and breeze through half the game. It offers various aspects that can appeal to different people, but also features that might discourage some. Every positive aspect could potentially be a negative for you.

Firstly, let's discuss the questing system and how it stands apart. The only "free" area is the city of Stormreach. It's one of the few places where you can move around and interact with all other players freely. Each quest is instanced and comes with difficulty settings: Casual (for a lenient experience), Normal (the intended play), Hard (where everything is one level above what it's supposed to be, which is a lot on a scale of 20), and Elite (two levels above or the hardest mode). Personally, I complete every quest on Elite and haven't played any quest at a lower difficulty for the last year or two. Casual play can easily be done alone but isn't that engaging. Normal is what most people would expect. Elite is where the real fun begins, ranging from "That wasn't so hard" to "Okay, so who ISN'T dead?" (answer: no one). Loot in the game is handled on a per-person basis. Dead monsters never drop usable loot. Instead, it's all in chests, which more than compensate. Experience points differ from what most people are used to. They aren't awarded for killing monsters, eliminating the fear of kill-stealing. All experience is tallied from monster kills, objects broken, traps disarmed, etc., and then evenly distributed to all players who participated in the dungeon.

When it comes to customization, it's the best MMORPG I've ever encountered. In terms of appearance, there are numerous options for creating a unique look. The true difference in customization lies in the character's skills. With 13 current classes to choose from, it's still rare to find someone who's a carbon copy of another player. You select your Feats (what your... more

16 Silkroad Online

Silkroad is a beautiful MMORPG game. It boasts great graphics and good gameplay, making it superior to WoW in my opinion. I enjoy playing both games, but I have a slight preference for Silkroad. Both Silkroad and WoW are visually appealing, but WoW gives you more options in character creation. However, this makes it difficult to make a choice. In Silkroad, you must choose between European or Chinese characters, which simplifies the decision-making process.

This game is really something special. It's such an underrated gem, primarily known only to Europeans. If you want to experience a game from the golden age of 2005, type Silkroad Online into Google and get started. The game is so good that it could be considered the MMORPG equivalent of Ocarina of Time.

17 DC Universe Online

I have no idea how this game hasn't been added to the list yet! To be fair, this forum is purely a wiki in the sense that users are the ones who make the list. But surely some of you have played DCUO! It's an amazing MMORPG, and the console controls are smooth as butter.

Too many people these days are focused on the overrated games of today's era. World of Warcraft is nowhere near better than Star Wars: The Old Republic, yet WoW is ranked 1st and SWTOR is 151st. Despicable.

Like reading comics? How about becoming a superhero in comic stories yourself? Not just being Batman or Superman, but creating your own superhero and feeling like you're saving the world with your own hands. Man, that's just awesome. And the only MMORPG that offers you that is DC Universe Online. Enjoy!

18 Star Wars Galaxies

Even though a lot of people hated the Combat Upgrade, I still liked the game very much as it existed before the dark times, before Lucas became greedy and closed it for the new game. Even after reaching your maximum level, the game had just started. The collection system, the city battles for faction control and points, and the special events - all of this made this game better than a lot of other MMORPGs where, after reaching maximum level, you just don't have anything to do. RIP SWG, and I hope Lucas knows what he did to all of his biggest fans by closing THIS game.

19 Wizard101

I've been playing Wizard101 since it first came out, and this is what I think of it: Wizard101 is one of the best games ever created! You can use spells, go to different worlds, buy a subscription or crowns to access them, and purchase cool stuff. You can also buy or farm for pets and train them to acquire incredible talents. Additionally, you can talk and hang out with friends, ride fast mounts across the Spiral, defeat bosses and minions, and so much more! I personally consider it to be one of the best games on Earth. It's unbelievable that this game is not higher on the Top Ten MMORPG list.

20 https://www.eveonline.com

I have been playing Eve Online for 6 months now, and it has become the only, and possibly the last, MMORPG I will play. It's that immersive. In that time, I have gained the skill to proficiently experience maybe 25% of the game and 15% of the universe, New Eden. It's huge. If you are impatient and require instant gratification, this game is not for you. Eve requires skill planning and treating your characters like real career pilots. From industrial business-types and care bear role-players to political hacks, corporate thieves, cold killers, scientists, engineers, and prospectors, Eve has them all and a niche for everyone with the gumption to be aware of their surroundings at all times. You are never safe unless you are docked and logged off.

21 Dragon Saga

I love to play this game. There are four wonderful jobs like magician, archer, thief, and warrior. Each of these is divided into two other jobs. This game can help you make new friends and even get married. The clothes are just so cute, and the skills in the game are awesome! If you want to know more, go ahead and play the game. I know you won't regret it!

Vote for Dragonica, people! #1

I play this game a lot and it's so cool. The graphics and everything, even the characters, are cute! It was the first MMORPG I played.

It's an addictive game when you've first started.
I can't even stop playing it when I'm in school.

22 The Elder Scrolls Online

Tons of content. Tons of customization. The action combat is fun and full of strategy. The graphics and immersion are great for an MMO. New significant content is added every month or two. People are very critical of it because of the subscription and early bugs. Most bugs have been worked out, but you still run into them occasionally. Some work still needs to be done on balancing. Some content lacks replayability. I'm not a fan of questing being the primary grind. Future announced patches and content address most issues, as the development team listens closely to players.

Should be ranked higher.

23 Ragnarok Online

I played my first game on a server about 8 years ago, and I still remember everything that happened that day. This game shaped me into the person I am today. I learned so many real-life concepts such as Norse mythology, history, science facts, team management, time management, and basic economics like buying and selling. I still cherish many memories even today, when I've become busy with my life and work.

Don't judge this game by its graphics. It's probably the best game for people like me who are passionate, love fantasy, and are extremely competitive. It will always be the greatest MMO I might ever play, even until my death.

24 Phantasy Star Online
25 Free Realms

Free Realms is one of the best 3D free MMORPGs with a huge world to explore and various jobs to undertake. I'm surprised to find it in the 183rd position. I thought it would be in the top 50.

You could be anything you wanted to be! Adventurer, chef, ninja, cart racer, and so much more!
