Most Overrated Metal Bands

The Top Ten
1 Metallica Metallica is an American Heavy/Thrash Metal band formed in 1981. The original lineup was James Hetfield (Vocalist and Rhythm guitarist), Dave Mustaine (Lead Guitar), Lars Ulrich (Drums), Ron McGovney (Bassist). The group came into mainstream from their Self-Titled album and the hit single "Enter Sandman".

With their first two albums, Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning reaching underground success, their third effort, Master of Puppets has since become one of the most important heavy metal albums ever, as it became the first thrash metal album to be certified platinum. The title track has since become the band's most played song live. ...read more.

I hate to do this. Metallica gets too much praise from too many people, but so many people put them too low. They're in the top 3 metal bands for sure. In my mind, they're battling it out with Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden and winning.
Also, how are Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Deep Purple overrated? That makes no sense. Even Slayer and Megadeth are kind of pushing it. These bands are all appropriately or maybe even underrated. Whatever. Point is, people rarely know what they are talking about. Slipknot are overrated in the same way Justin Bieber or Ke$ha are overrated. They're just bad and people like them anyway.

Metallica hasn't released ANY good album since 1988. Black album succeed (comercially), but it's a very generic, monotonic and non-thrash album. Similar with Load and Reload. St. Anger is terrible. Death Magnetic is decent, even though its mastering is just horrible. And finally, Lulu - absolutely the worst album I've ever heard. And I've heard a lot - yeah, even Trout Mask Replica seems to be better.
Definitely not the best nor most important metal band in the world. There's so many artists that are less known, but play better music - let's just remind few: Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Megadeth, Pantera, Venom, Death, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Anthrax... And the list goes on. And on.
Metallica is a great example of a good band goes wrong. They play crap, but ironically, it helps them to expand their fanbase.

Metallica's truly great albums can be condensed to "Kill Em All" and "Ride The Lightning". Everything else was just average (yes even the hugely overrated and really boring Master Of Puppets). Ulrich killed the band because he just wanted to get rich (see the dumb Napster lawsuit... and don't fool yourself that it was for a more noble cause than lining his pockets). Metallica are a real sad story in the history of metal. They will never stand tall with the likes of Judas Priest or Iron Maiden. I see them as merely a business out to screw honest fans out of their money for sub-par music.

Metallica is probably the worst of "The Big Four" and have not done anything good since 1991 and Black Album was not really that good. It just happend to become big comercially. Somehow everyone love Metallica and say that they are the best thrash metal band ever and stuff like that. The last real thrash album that they released was And justice for all. But they have never really been that thrash. Personally I pretty much only like kill em all but I can see why some like there other albums. If you look at important and influencial metal bands you would have to put Metallica pretty far down.

2 Avenged Sevenfold Avenged Sevenfold is an American heavy metal band, that was formed 1999 in California. Their longest lineup of members was M. Shadows (Vocals), Synyster Gates (Lead Guitar), Zacky Vengeance (Rhythm Guitar), Johnny Christ (Bass Guitar), and The Rev (Drums).

Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan (Drums), their most notable drummer, passed away in 2009, being temporarily replaced by Mike Portnoy, who was replaced by Arin Ilejay, who was finally replaced with Brooks Wackerman. A common phrase for fans "foREVer" was created after the Rev's death in his remembrance. ...read more.

It is horrible that these guys are considered top of the pile in mainstream metal nowadays. I'm in my early twenties so these guys would be held in high regard by lots people my age but these guys are everything that's wrong with metal. They are posers they don't have that powerful aura that pantera, motorhead and slayer would have. My point being they seem more commercial emo than they do metal. I thought bat country was a good song in fairness but unfortunately that seems to be it. Everything else I've heard has been fairly awful. Nightmare is meant to be one of their best loved songs I don't even consider it metal and upon hearing it my face contorted into a grimace of disgust. Also Metallica shouldn't be number 1 even though their output for the last twenty years has been horrible at least they begun by giving us some of the best metal albums ever. And also even when they are bad now they still provide entertainment in the guise of unintentional comedy like the some kind of ...more

So I would like to ask someone with some sense how these guys are overrated. Oh hold on I'm sorry, no one with sense thinks they're overrated? Exactly. Now I've been trying to be ad sophisticated as possible while going through these lists tonight, but this is where I draw the line. Oh I'm sorry A7X is at the top of every modern metal list, it's not my fault that they're just that good. There's a difference from being overrated and good. A7X just happens to be the best band of all time (excuse my facts). Sorry that Avenged Sevenfold is taking the spotlight off of your precious Slipknot, or Linkin Park (which happen to be overrated as well). So, everyone just go sit down and take another listen to Buried Alive, Afterlife, and Dear God.

Love,
A7XfoREVer

Not only are they some of the most unbearable posers ever to walk the Earth (right alongside Linkin Park), but they can't even come up with their own logo. So steal Overkill's?
Many of the bands I see on this list aren't even overrated, and so shouldn't even be near these fools. Metallica's first 4 albums were kick-ass and unfathomably influential, but not even as much so as everything Led Zeppelin has ever done. Steve Harris of Iron Maiden composes the best power ballads I've ever heard ("Paschendale", "Brighter Than A Thousand Suns", "The Talisman", etc. ), and that's just the stuff that everyone overlooks because they're too busy listening to their '80s stuff, which is also undeniably awesome. The only reason that anybody thinks that Deep Purple is overrated is because they've never bothered listening to any of their music besides the "Machine Head" album. Try listening to the "In Rock" and "Fireball" albums, then reconsider.

Avenged Sevenfold is not overrated, they are number 1 in so many categories and have members that are number 1 in their categories because they are just that good. Listen to City of Evil, Nightmare, And waking the fallen. The best albums ever made by far. Even when they changed their sound in Hail to the King, they still sounded better than all other albums that year. It takes true talent to be able to change your sound and still top the charts.

3 Slipknot Slipknot is an American metal band formed in Des Moines, Iowa in 1996. The band is best known as one of the pioneers of the New Wave of American Alternative Metal during the late 1990s - 2000s and are distinguishable by the band's clothing choices, consisting of black/red jumpsuits and horror inspired masks... read more

Slipknot in 10? next to Metallica, is the most overrated metal band!
many guys only know this band about metal, with other band which are also commercial; as Metallica (they are really good but every fan should admit that they turned very commercial)... I'm not saying they are bad, but at least I have to say that is stupid that the guy who made this list thinks that Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Pantera, Megadeth, Slayer, Judas Priest and Deep Purple are most overrated than one of the most played bands in MTV!

These guys were killer back in 99-02 but the masks seem much more gimmicky now. After Iowa Corey and Jim went and did stone sour. They have an awful whiny sound that drives me mad. So some of that started to leak into slipknot and to be honest I liked volume 3 a lot but the albums after that are whiny excuses for talent.

This juvenile pop band is metal by no stretch of the imagination - anyone who thinks otherwise should grab a screwdriver and perforate their inoperative ear drums. Corey Taylor is just a whiny douchebag who tries to act all tough, but can't sing like a man.

4 Slayer Slayer was an American thrash metal band from Huntington Park, California, formed in 1981 by guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King. They rose to fame with their 1986 album Reign in Blood, and is credited as one of the big four of thrash metal bands, the others being Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. ...read more.

I like slayer, but it's not like they're the single most amazing band in the world. Sure, they're influential, but that doesn't change the fact that they're incredibly overrated. They're talented, and their music is super fast and hard to play, but they do suffer from a huge case of "every song sounds the same." The drumbeat to pretty much all of their songs is just snare over and over, and the guitars get old pretty quickly. Also, let's be honest. Tom Araya is a terrible vocalist. The worst part about this all is that since I didn't say "Slayer is the most amazing band ever," this comment is going to get thumbs-downed all over the place. I like Slayer, but people need to grow up and realize that heaviness alone doesn't make a band good.

Well, they're probably past recovery, sadly. Ever since Divine Intervention, Kerry (would he just quit and go home? ) Kerry started writing most of their songs after Divine Intervention, but before Hanneman wrote them. By the way, Divine Intervention wasn't half bad. It could've been better, though. What do Angel of Death, Chemical Warfare, Hell Awaits, Raining Blood, South of Heaven, War Ensemble, Seasons in the Abyss, Disciple, and World Painted Blood have in common? All written by J. Hanneman. Now, sadly, he's dead, and so cannot redeem Slayer. Maybe Holt can, but he's only done a mediocre job on Repentless, and, for that matter, with his own band lately. Last good Exodus album was in '03. But make no mistake, Seasons and Reign are thrash classics forever, right up with Rust in Peace. But the band's sum talent is pretty low. They had one super talented dude pushing it, and let Kerry write a song or two so he would shut up, and made some darn good albums. Then Araya and King thought ...more

How is Slayer not number 1? Here's a band with 10 or 12 great songs and then a 100+ songs that all sound exactly alike & equally bad. Almost all of their guitar solos are nothing but sped up, chaotic noise. Araya's voice is terrible but it does seem to work on some songs. Their lyrics are comically bad, never progressing past the old "Let's shock everyone with songs about Satan & demons & death". Actually Slayer has pulled of the hat trick in my opinion. Most overrated metal band, most overrated metal album(Reign in Blood) & most overrated metal song(Raining Blood).

Solid band who released a lot of good albums in the 80's but they used up all of their good riffs by 1994's Divine Intervention. Ever since Diabolus in Musica came out in '98 Slayer have not put out one single album worth listening to. Most of their contemporaries like Testament and Megadeth have recently dropped good albums so Slayer has no excuse to release garbage like Repentless.

5 Pantera Pantera was an American heavy metal band formed in 1981 by guitarist Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul. The band started out as a glam metal act in the 1980s with little success. After discarding their original lead vocalist and enlisting Phil Anselmo, the band signed a major record deal with Warner Music Group via Atco Records. Around this time, Pantera underwent a major change in their musical... read more

Incredibly overrated. How the hell is Dimebag Darrell ranked in the top ten greatest guitarists with HUGE heavyhitters like Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Same goes for Vinnie Paul. My brother puts him in his top 5 favorite drummers, and I just don't see why. Pantera's songs are sloppy and dull. They don't deserve all the praise they get all the time.

Ok one very good album vdop, cfh okay, the other three are the same garbage, have like 2 good songs each album, they took advantage of the poor metal 90s! Good for anselmo that teamed with down! That's a good band. Dimebag was a very descent guitar player, but think if pantera still playing now, I think they fell off short of imagination, those three last albums are sinking and are very forgettable.

People, learn the meaning of the word "overrated". Yeah, we know that Dimebag was a great guitarist but Pantera like the most of the bands got really popular after he died. Him and Phil were only "great" musicians in the band, and only 2 albums were really good and "special".

6 Linkin Park Linkin Park is an American alternative rock band formed in Agoura Hills, California, in 1996. The current members include Mike Shinoda (vocals, keyboards, rhythm guitar), Brad Delson (guitar), Dave "Phoenix" Farrell (bass), Joe Hahn (DJ), and Rob Bourdon (drums). Linkin Park is associated with a mixture of alternative rock, hip hop, and techno. Some of their influences include Nine Inch Nails, Deftones,... read more

Linkin Park are like the One Direction of rock band, they suck but people like them anyway. Whenever I hear someone blasting this crappy band near my house, I feel the urge to blast awesome old school thrash metal bands like Voivod and Kreator!

I love Linkin Park, but let's be fair; they're not a Metal band, and even Chester stated that.

On an additional note, you can't escape being called overrated when you're incredibly successful with critics, fans and sales.

Why does Linkin Park have to receive such negativity? Yes, they may be overrated, and almost more than half of their stuff isn't metal, but I don't think those reasons are not valid for you to hate them.

7 DragonForce DragonForce are a British power metal band based in London, England. Formed in 1999, the group are known for their long and fast guitar solos, fantasy-themed lyrics, and electronic sounds in their music to add to their retro video game-influenced sound.

So overrated! I could honestly tolerate them more if they just weren't so cheesy. Fury of the Storm is one of the cheesiest songs I've ever heard in my life.

And what makes this band worse is that from what I've heard, they speed up their music in the studio. That alone makes me lose a lot of respect for them because it's just like with singers who use auto-tune. They don't use their real voices.

DragonForce isn't a bad band. They do have interesting guitar solos, good production and the musicianship is commendable, but you can't deny one thing...

...DragonForce is pretty cheesy, especially in terms of their lyrics. And yeah, there are better Power Metal bands anyway.

The problem with them is that they keep using the same formula over and over again. They don't speed up their music in the studio, watch the live DVD from 2015 and album from 2010 and you will realize that. They used to drink too much. But almost all of the songs sound the same.

They destroy the image of whole power metal community and thus bands like Blind Guardian, Sabaton, Gamma Ray, Therion, Iced Earth, Kamelot, Symphony X, Angra... That are actual quality power metal get shunned upon.

8 Iron Maiden Iron Maiden are an English Heavy Metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris. The most critically acclaimed period for the band was from 1983-1989. With vocalist Bruce Dickinson, bassist Steve Harris, lead guitarist Dave Murray, rhythm guitarist Adrian Smith, and drummer Nicko McBrain. Smith left the band in 1989 and was replaced by Janick Gers. But returned in 1999, and now the band has three guitar players. ...read more.

I don't listen to the overrated Run to the Hills, I prefer The Nomad. Wait...

Oh no I can't listen to Iron Maiden anymore because the whole band is overrated. Shame, I have to switch to Judas Priest. Oh no, traditional heavy metal as a whole is overrated, why not search for some funeral doom metal? Ah, metal is overrated, if I want to shine from the crowd, I have to find something else.

Maybe I should listen to Oleg Lundstrem's Big Band. Hell no! Music as a whole is overrated, maybe I should read about medieval France. Um, free time is overrated, I will try to learn/work all the time. No, life is overrated, I have to kill myself. Suicide is also overrated, what should I do? Maybe I'll go back listening to Iron Maiden and don't care about what other people think of it.

Why are Metallica and Black Sabbath on here?! They are not overrated, they are the greatest and they are true metal! Maiden on the other hand, are the worst band ever. Bruce Dickinson isn't even a Metal singer, and neither is the band itself. Maiden are just a pop band that got lucky. Dickinson is the worst singer ever, Murray is the most average guitar player ever.

After Slipknot and A7...X most overrated band on the planet. Albums with Paul were pretty good with some nice riffs and actual good singing, and the glorious Steve Harris could actually be heard. After BD joined Maiden just became one big melody with operatic and annoying vocals with good song here and there.

I loved Maiden when I was 15/16. Then I grew up and slowly realised that I'm are, in fact, the ultimate teenage metal band. Tight trousers, macho poses, and about the worst vocalist I have ever heard.
Yes, I admit I'm basing my opinion on an 80s view. But things don't change much, and I doubt I'm did either.

9 Megadeth Megadeth is an American thrash metal band from Los Angeles, California. Megadeth was formed in 1983 by guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson, shortly after Mustaine was fired from Metallica. They have released 15 studio albums to date, and have gone through many lineup changes, with Dave Mustaine being the sole constant member.

They released their debut album “Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good!” in 1985, but became successful after the release of “Peace Sells...But Who’s Buying?” in 1986. ...read more.

Easily the most overrated Metal band going. If they weren't always compared favorably to Metallica, a band very much hated, people might realise just how overrate Megadeth really are. Even though Megadeth fans are blind to this, Megadeth sold out just like Metallica did, Cryptic Writings/Risk, except they were no where near as successful at "selling out" as Metallica were.

The problem is that Megadeth fans are so rabid and worshipping of Mustaine that it's frankly disturbing. Megadeth sold out, that's a fact. Look at most of their albums during the nineties, not to mention supercollider. The difference is that they failed to make a success of it like Metallica. Metallica are more overrated, but that doesn't mean Megadeth aren't.

Megadeth - just Take Metallica, put some leftist whiffle thrash lyrics in place of the poetics heard from the latter, up the technical ability of the instruments and then place the single most annoying vocal performance in the Thrash genre.

And then replace the vaguely Nu-metal St. Anger with a damn POP album.

Unoriginal, irritaing. Should be taken up by overkill as a Big 4 Band.

They used to be simply mind-boggling. Of late, there's been a noticeable decline in Megadeth's songs. Don't get me wrong, their contribution to metal is extraordinary, but in thirteen, the songs seemed to be remakes of their old songs and the supercollider title track makes ac/dc sound like a heavy metal band.

10 Black Sabbath Black Sabbath were a Heavy Metal band formed in Birmingham, England in 1968 by guitarist and songwriter Tony Iommi, singer John "Ozzy" Osbourne, bassist and main lyricist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward. ...read more.

Black Sabbath of the 70s with Ozzy is overrated mostly because everybody thinks they invented metal but they didn't - they invented doom metal and maybe goth metal but that's all, not the rest of the metal genre. Black Sabbath's stuff of the 70s wasn't metal - it was heavy blues rock and even Tony Iommi admitted that. That's why they radically changed their sound in 1980 - they just started play metal.

Judas Priest and Iron Maiden didn't sound like Black Sabbath (bluesy, slow and/or quite simple songs), they sounded like Rainbow and Deep Purple (non-bluesy, fast, complex, technical and classically inspired songs). Same for the current metal, which means that not Black Sabbath but Deep Purple and Rainbow invented metal as we know it now.

While their influence and importance are noteworthy and they have some good tracks, Black Sabbath is arguably the most overrated Metal band that I know of. Partly because they tend to be the only Metal band of their time period that gets any sort of attention, and hence overshadows other great bands like Deep Purple, Scorpions and Rainbow, who were just as influential to Heavy Metal.

On an additional note, Ozzy Osbourne. Yes, his voice suits Black Sabbath's gloomy atmosphere and its recognizable. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean it's great. I can name numerous singers from several genres (Yes, even Pop Music) who are better singers than Ozzy and his successor, Ronnie James Dio eclipses him so badly it's not even funny.

Metallica sold out? Guess what, Ozzy did that too, but MUCH worse! By pulling out a reality T.V. show, which embarrassed one of his daughters enough to wind up not joining him on that. Also, many of his solo songs are really poor if given a thought.

I would argue that Black Sabbath is underrated. Their early work with Ozzy was all great, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage don't get NEARLY enough credit. Their are two masterful albums with Dio that no one cares about (Heaven and Hell was great as well), Born Again, Headless Cross and Tyr were all amazing and 13 had a lot of energy. I would put Black Sabbath in my top 5 bands of all time, probably at #4.

The original metal band. Any metal musician will tell you that Black Sabbath started it. Rob Zombie, Lamb of God, and Cannibal Corpse members have all said that Sabbath was the first. Sure, they didn't sound like Maiden or Priest, but that doesn't mean they aren't metal.

Bill Haley & His Comets are cited as the first rock n roll band, and they sound nothing like the British Invasion bands like The Beatles, Kinks, and The Who. It's the same thing.

Black Sabbath directly created lots of Metal subgenres, like Doom Metal, Stoner Metal, and Sludge Metal. Some people also credit them with influencing Speed/Thrash Metal with songs like "Symptom of the Universe" and "Paranoid." They are also sometimes credited with influencing Gothic Metal and lyrical aspects of Black Metal.

As for the blues argument. That doesn't make sense. Metal isn't defined as strictly classical inspired heavy rock. It's just heavy rock. Motörhead, The Sword, High on Fire, Orange Goblin, and ...more

The Contenders
11 Marilyn Manson Marilyn Manson is an American rock band from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Formed in 1989 by frontman Marilyn Manson and Daisy Berkowitz, the group was originally named Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids with their theatrical performances gathering a local cult following in the early 1990s. The name of the band comes from famous sex symbol Marilyn Monroe and famous criminal Charles Manson. Manson joined these two names together because he wanted a name combined with good (Monroe) and evil (Manson). The other members of the band have their stage names combined with the first names of famous sex symbols and the last names of famous serial killers.

How can they be overrated in metal when most metalheads don't even consider them metal in the first place?

His lyrics are fantastic, but his style of singing isn't that good.

This should be way higher, and Metallica shouldn't be on this list.

Shock rock, not metal.

12 Cannibal Corpse Cannibal Corpse is a American death metal band from Buffalo, New York, formed in 1988. The band is known for their graphic album covers, explicitly violent lyrics and song titles like "I C** Blood" The group got into mainstream after performing the song "Hammer Smashed Face" in the 1994 film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. In 1995, vocalist Chris Barnes left the band to focus on his new death metal project Six Feet Under. He was replaced by George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher of the band Monstrosity, who has remained as the frontman since. ...read more.

This band ISN'T actually TERRIBLE, it's just that it gets way too much praise for mediocre guitar work, low quality locals, and poor lyrics. DM bands like: Death, Morbid Angel, COB, Opeth, Obituary, Decide, Etc. ARE MUCH better than this band. It also contributed to several negative stereotypes, contributing to a problem in metal. We're isolated enough already, no need to make it worse with bad lyrics. This band was too focused on shock value and making as much money from morbid curiosity, instead of making good music. Their "best" song, "Hammer Smashed Face" is mediocre at best.

Sorry, but Cannibal Corpse are definitely the most overrated death metal band. I hate it when people say they're better than legends such as Death, Autopsy, Morbid Angel, Entombed, etc.

This should be number one.
These guys are garbage. There is absolutely no reason Metallica should be at the top of the list, they deserve their praise. Cannibal Corpse is the worst metal band. Period.

These guys are so boring with the exception of their first three records.

13 Black Veil Brides Black Veil Brides is an American rock band currently consisting of Andy Biersack (vocals), Jinxx (guitar), Jake Pitts (guitar), Christian Coma (drums) and Ashley Purdy (bass), that formed in 2006 in Ohio. In the beginning of their career, the band was heavily associated with the emo subculture, and had strong metalcore, screamo and alternative influences, however got more metal oriented over the years. Their songs usually carry a message of acceptance, believing in yourself and being individual and different. Among their most well known songs are "Knives and Pens", "Rebel Love Song", "In the End" and "Fallen Angels".

Honestly, the guitarist is the highlight of the band, you'll get an awesome intro and then Andy's voice kicks in, along with a generic drum track... Andy's voice, despite sounding gritty, is just very weak, you don't get a sense of power behind it, and his harsh vocals are some of the worst I've heard where the accent goes all twangy. The Legacy had an awesome intro and then it just lost all its momentum, and the only songs I can say were good all the way through were In The End, Fallen Angels and I Am Bulletproof.

They have some great songs (In The End, Heart of Fire, etc.), and I do think that they get a bit too much hate, but I get why they're in this list. Their music is pretty generic, and Andy Biersack, while not bad, is not that great of a singer (Jake Pitts is pretty good guitarist though, obviously not Dave Mustaine level, but still good nevertheless). I also agree that their emo fanbase is too cringy. I don't want to hear another "this band saved my life " But they are technically not really metal.

A band for girls who want to seem alternative and into the 'metal scene' yet would cower if ever shown some Slayer or Pantera.
Their appearance and sound is as if KISS and Avenged got put in a blender together with some razor blades.

Overrated as hell. This is not a metal band, contrary to what many scene/emo kids will tell you. The fact that Metallica and even A7X are above this makes me worry about people these days

14 Cradle of Filth Cradle of Filth are a British extreme metal band that formed in Suffolk in 1991. The band's musical style evolved from black metal to a cleaner and more "produced" amalgam of gothic metal, symphonic black metal and other extreme metal styles.

They may not be black metal, but at least they can be considered gothic metal, unlike Nightwish or WT.

Black metal? Seriously? More like wannabe metal!

Their recent stuff is pop metal!

15 Five Finger Death Punch Five Finger Death Punch, often shortened to Five Finger or Death Punch, also abbreviated as 5FDP or FFDP, is an American metal band from Las Vegas, Nevada. Formed in 2005, the band's name comes from the kung fu movie The Five Fingers of Death.

Heavier version of Nickelback - all their songs sound exactly the same. And Jekyll and Hyde is the worst I've heard over the airwaves since Coldplay was inescapably popular. The only reason they're "big" right now is because Wrong Side of Heaven's music video managed to whip the general populace into a circlejerk frenzy because of the military theme, and apparently nobody knows how to draw the line at "Yeah, that one thing they did was good but let's just let it die now."

Seriously. One decent song with a decent message does not make them good.

God what an abysmal band on so many levels. Vocalist who can't sing, some of the most garbage lyrics ever penned, generic riffs that are stolen from Pantera and Machine Head, and a fanbase consisting entirely of rednecks.

That band name sounds like it was created by a wannabe tough guy.

This should be #1 on this list. Tried to get into it but I could not. Also their singer is a turdbucket

16 Motörhead Motörhead were an English heavy metal band formed in June 1975 by bassist, singer, and songwriter Ian Fraser "Lemmy" Kilmister, who was the sole constant member; guitarist and songwriter Larry Wallis; and drummer Lucas Fox. The band's harsh vocals and fast paced tempos helped inspire speed metal and thrash metal.

Saying Motörhead isn't Metal just doesn't make sense. Metal isn't strictly defined as classical inspired music. It's just a louder/heavier version of Rock and Roll. Motörhead is one of the most influential Metal Bands ever. They were one of the first metal bands as well. I mean, just listen to them. If that isn't metal, then I must not know what Metal is. It's fast paced, bluesy speed metal. Lemmy said he didn't feel apart of the Metal community, but that doesn't mean they aren't metal.

Whats with Metallica haters get a life their the biggest metal band ever... And motorhead is the most underrated band ever I bet you don't even know who lemmy is...

Just noise to me, no melody, sorry I just dot get them. Maybe I just don't like metal. I do like zeppelin, Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rainbow cause it's not constant overkill, more light & shade

17 Anthrax Anthrax is an American thrash metal band from New York City, formed in 1981 by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker.

To be honest, Anthrax is the least known and, thus, the most underrated out of the Big 4 of Thrash. Its surprising how people want to jump in on how Anthrax isn't as good as the other three, although in terms of 2010s material Anthrax has (so far) done the best.

Easily the worst of the "Big 4" and rides off the coat tails of the others.
One decent album (among the living) gets them grouped in with 3 of the most influential, genre defining bands of a generation.

So overrated, they should belong in the big 10 if such thing would exist. Only thing that got then famous is moshing and kept singing about it for years they always sound the same: silent hardcore-thrash with even more idiotic vocals. Stupid band

Spawned some of the worst bands ever, and simply aren't as good as they're made out to be.

18 System of a Down System of a Down, formed in 1994, is an Armenian-American alternative metal group from Glendale, California. The band name is sometimes shortened to System or SOAD. They've always been a very political band since their inception. Often being against genocide and war most notably in songs like: Pluck, Holy Mountains, and BYOB (Bring Your Own Bombs). Serj is an active activist who wants to change the world for the better.

The band's current members include Serj Tankian (vocalist, keyboards), Daron Malakian (guitarist, vocalist), Shavo Odadjian (bassist), and John Dolmayan (drummer). ...read more.

The most poseur band on the planet. The singer is in an orchestra! The lyrics have absolutely no meaning whatsoever in any shape or form. Terrible music!

Every song I listen too I hated and I think it is the vocals.

Lonely day is the only song I could listen too.

This is the kind of band you will like (as a guilty pleasure only).

The vocalist sounds like a 12 year old trying to sound tough.

19 Mastodon Mastodon is an American heavy metal band from Atlanta, Georgia, formed in early 2000 and composed of bassist Troy Sanders, guitarists Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor.

So overrated! I have no idea why so many people are into them. They're just boring, uninteresting, and mediocre at best. Really terrible band in my eyes.

Their earlier albums (remission-Crack the skye) were beautiful but they dropped and then boom. Emperor of sand.they however moved from sluge to prog

20 Death Death was an American death metal band formed in 1983 by Chuck Schuldiner. Death is considered to be one of the most influential bands in heavy metal and a pioneering force in death metal. Its debut album, Scream Bloody Gore, has been widely regarded as the first death metal record, while the band's driving force, Chuck Schuldiner, is acknowledged as the "Godfather of Death Metal." Very overrated (Chuck worship) when there are countless bands that have put out better death metal records. They sold out after Spiritual Healing. Their music became more accessible and tailor made for mainstream pop metal fans. I hardly hear any Death fan talk about or appreciate their first three records because they're heavy, vile and aggressive which is how death metal should be and is the exact opposite of pop metal.

They're very overrated and one of the worst sell out bands and yet blinded pop fans will worship and glorify them as the God of death metal. They went from straight up Death Metal to lame Prog Metal in a matter of few albums. Since Chuck was itching to receive mainstream glory he quickly decided to turn his back on the genre. Their first three albums are essential for fans of 'death metal'. Their later stuffs are not death metal.

A few people actually like Death for their DM era they worship them only because of their last prog. Lame albums and of course Chuck got famous after he died like anybody cared for him when he was alive.

A pop rock band that plays heavy breakdown just to make it sound brutal.

Play a random lick, just to show that they can play technical.

Deathmetal growls to show that they are deathmetal.

Sang cheesy pop vocals, to prove the the young girls that they are emotional and can sound feminine like Justin beiber.

Great musicians with bad music taste of writing songs. and a horrible combination.

Pop rock with deathmetal growls, 5 breakdowns in one song, girlyman pop singing, annoying licks, boring lyrics. these combination is too cheesy.

I gave them too many chances I listen and gave them a fair review.

And all I have to say. their style is horrible.

Talentless hacks who only seem to know how to write pointless 0-0-0-1-0-0-0 breakdowns. Hopefully the scene kids who like these guys eventually grow up and listen to something worthwhile. Oh, and this band is anything but metal, despite what they'd tell you.

OH MY GOD. This band is horrible, it's one note breakdowns and techno. Slipknot, Priest, Metallica, Sabbath, and Avenged Sevenfold could definitely be considered overrated but at least they have good music to back it up. AA should be #1.

I always get confused why they are successful. Bloody emo teenagers!

They're not a metal band, why are they on this list? Same for Zeppelin.

I love kiss! And there not even metal. But anyway there the best band ever!

Kiss is hard rock

Why are these guys so popular? They're one of the worst metalcore bands out there. Generic, unoriginal, emo band with cheesy lyrics and terrible vocals, and they suck live. There's so much better metalcore bands out there. Listen to As I Lay Dying or August Burns Red, not this crap.

Not Metal, but a really good Metalcore-band!

25 Tool Tool is an American alternative metal/progressive metal band, that was formed in 1990. The band is set together between Maynard James Keenan (Vocals), Danny Carey (Drums), Adam Jones (Guitar) and since 1995 Justin Chancellor (Bass). The band is known for their influences from electronic sounds and their overly complex and strangely structured songs. They released their debut album "Undertow" in 1993 and later put out other famous albums, like "Lateralus" and "10,000 Days". The band has established a legacy as one of the most well-known and beloved progressive metal and alternative metal bands of all time.

Tool can definitely be called overrated but they have got 1-2 really good songs in the form of Lateralus and The Grudge. Their worst album is 10,000 Days and the worst song is The Pot. I never really saw the appeal for this band and no, I'm not new to Tool as my Dad is a huge fan of them and I got a lot of exposure to their songs since my pre-teen years yet, I find them to be pretty underwhelming and boring.

There are way too many boring fillers within their songs just for the sake of extending the song's length. They're pretty much an uninteresting and overhyped band, and not to mention their fanbase is extremely obnoxious and pretentious.

They're somewhat okay, but most of their songs are just 12 minute loops and often get pretty boring after a while.

Tool just put some odd time signatures and weird lyrics in their songs and the fangirls think it's cool and amazing music lol
Boring guitar, atrocious vocals, uninteresting songwriting.
