Most Overrated Rock Bands

The Top Ten
1 Nirvana Nirvana was an American grunge band that was formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987. Nirvana disbanded after Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994. The drummer of the band, David Grohl, went on to start the Foo-Fighters, an alternative rock band.

The band was comprised of Kurt Cobain (Vocals, Guitar), Dave Grohl (Drums) and Krist Novoselic (Bass).

Nirvana is most well-known for their... read more

While I understand they had a huge influence on many bands and artists today, and I do like a lot of their stuff I just get really bored after listening to them after a while. Not because of how simple the songs are but because there's not a whole lot of variety imo

Nirvana has their place. They were by no means bad. Kurt had a talent for writing lyrics and a voice that inspired a generation. But the fact remains: they were not even the best in their genre. I wouldn't even put them in my top 3. Soundgarden is VASTLY superior in every single category outside of popularity. Chris Cornell compared to Kurt Cobain is like a 5 carat diamond compared to white dog. Much of the same can be said for Pearl Jam... and Alice in Chains. I would even say Stone Temple Pilots is a tier or 2 above Nirvana. I respect them and their body of work, but when every other well known grunge band has better singing, songwriting, musicianship, lyricism, longevity... Overrated.

2 U2 U2 are an Irish rock band from Dublin. Formed in 1976, the group consists of Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. U2's early sound was rooted in post-punk but eventually grew to incorporate influences from many genres of popular music. Throughout the group's musical pursuits, they have maintained a sound built on melodic instrumentals. Their lyrics, often embellished with spiritual imagery,... read more

I'm not a believer that all famous musicians have to be technically proficient, but these guys have been cutting corners for a while now, and don't seem to have improved that much. It still seems like the Edge uses his vast array of effects pedals to compensate for his lack of guitar skill. Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton always use the same, monotone rhythms to back every single song (does Clayton even use more than one strong on any song? ). As for Bono, he's not nearly as great as his devotees make him out to be. Has no-one noticed how clumsy and off-key he is on 'With Or Without You"? Perfect example of a substandard singer overreaching his grasp.

Never liked u2 or bono. Can't believe nirvana have made it to number one on this list. what about the likes of Coldplay, green day and iron maiden? Think nirvana deserved the recognition they received, they were brilliant. But there were other bands in that same kind of genre around that time that also deserved similar recognition. AIC, soundgarden, Stone temple pilots just to mention a few. Other ridiculously underrated bands include joy division, the specials, the chameleons and the talking heads. U2 suck.

3 Linkin Park Linkin Park is an American alternative rock band formed in Agoura Hills, California, in 1996. The current members include Mike Shinoda (vocals, keyboards, rhythm guitar), Brad Delson (guitar), Dave "Phoenix" Farrell (bass), Joe Hahn (DJ), and Rob Bourdon (drums). Linkin Park is associated with a mixture of alternative rock, hip hop, and techno. Some of their influences include Nine Inch Nails, Deftones,... read more

Don't get me wrong, I do like Linkin Park. They're definitely in my top fifteen favorite rock bands. HOWEVER, they are not #1. People keep placing them above the Beatles, Queen, and other bands that honestly deserve a top spot. I wouldn't mind seeing them or their songs in a top ten, or an occasional top 5. But they are currently the #1 rock band on "best rock bands" list, which really isn't true. Not trying to offend any fans, just saying that they are kinda overrated.

Generic, awful, idiotic and whiny band. I have no idea what makes them incredibly popular, but my guess is probably because of the insane amount of emos and weeaboos on this planet. Those kinds of people just love eating this kind of music up, along with their pop punk and metalcore obsession as well. Linkin Park mean absolutely nothing to the music industry whatsoever.

Honestly, this list just seems to be a place for people to trash talk bands they don't like, and there are a lot of really great bands on here. But I do think that Linkin Park is overrated. So I'm voting for them.

I do find it funny how this list looks almost exactly the same as most of the top ten best rock bands list...

4 AC/DC AC/DC are a Australian hard rock band, formed in November 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young, who continued as members until Malcolm's illness and departure in 2014 . They were fronted by Bon Scott until his untimely death due to alcohol poisoning in 1979, after which they hired Brian Johnson to front the band. Commonly referred to as a hard rock or blues rock band.

I think that what makes their songs so supposedly "stupid" is some of the best stuff about them. They don't put on any airs about sadness or romance. They just write awesome power anthems. May I add that they managed to rise from the ashes after their awesome lead singer, Bon Scott, sadly passed away. Not many bands could do that. Besides, Angus Young is an incredibly skilled guitar player, and his solos make up for the repetitive lyrics.

These guys are extremely overrated. So many middle aged men hail these people as one of the best of the best in rock, and why is that? They really bring nothing new to the table, their lyrics don't explore anything, they don't try to experiment, and they sound like a standard hard rock band. Maybe I'm missing the entire point of ACDC, but I don't see them fitting my music tastes.

The guitar riffs and solos lack technical ability, the vocals suck, the drumming is too basic, and you can barely hear the bass. The lyrics are very simple and generic. They lack deep meanings in them, the lyrics are all just about money, drugs, and rock n roll. Pretty lyrically lazy. The reason why Metallica, Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, and Avenged Sevenfold are better is that they are simplistic, they have better and more technical solos, and they have songs with deep meanings. AC/DC sucks.

5 Coldplay Coldplay are a British pop rock band formed in 1996. The band consists of Chris Martin (lead vocalist and pianist), Jonny Buckland (lead guitarist), Guy Berryman (bassist) and Will Champion (drummer and backing vocalist). Manager Phil Harvey is often considered an unofficial fifth member. The band renamed themselves "Coldplay" in 1998. Before making their debut album, they recorded and released three EPs: Safety in 1998, Brothers & Sisters as a single in 1999, and The Blue Room in the same year. The Blue Room was their first release on a major label, after signing to Parlophone. ...read more.

Coldplay were great to start with and deserved the accolades they got. Then they just produced nothing but filler but were still praised by critics. Hence why they are overrated. It's all sounded the same, very dull for years. The raw emotion has now gone and there songs now sound like there written by someone who's trying to hard. And failing

Listen to the piano rift from clocks... Listen to the piano rift from clocks... Listen to the piano rift from... Aww hell, I could've done this as a seventh grader... But then I didn't... Dang you Chris Martin!

I love Coldplay, but I agree about them being overrated for sure and especially with their newer albums. They have gone from the alt. rock scene to pop and it's really sad to see.

Definitely vote Coldplay. I can think of at least 5 songs they ripped off other artists. I'm sure there are more we don't know about.

6 Green Day Green Day are an American pop punk/punk rock band formed in East Bay, California in 1987. The members include Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals and guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass), Tré Cool (drums) and Jason White (guitar). Green Day are associated with punk rock, pop punk and alternative rock. Some of their influences include The Ramones, Sex Pistols, NOFX, and Bad Religion. They are best known for their songs like ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’, ‘Basket Case’ and their ‘American Idiot’ & ‘Dookie’ albums. American Idiot sold 6 million copies in the U.S. and won a Grammy Award for "Best Rock Album". Green Day have sold over 75 million records worldwide and have won 5 Grammy Awards. They ...read more.

They've had some of the most innovative punk songs ever. They've always had the spirit of pop but the intensity of punk. Definitely not overrated, especially when you consider each and every song from one of their albums is different in their own sense, ESPECIALLY Dookie, Nimrod, Insomniac, and 21st Century Breakdown.

I like Green Day. They're one of my favorite rock bands. But Green Day is overrated. Some people get into rock by them. but as you listen more rock songs, you'll understood why Green Day is overrated. I never wanted to admin that Green Day was overrated when I first started to listen them and rock songs.

I honestly never got the craze for Green Day. I was never a fan of punk rock in the first place and never understood how Green Day could be compared with the likes of linkin park.

They were voted as the best band of the 2000s even though they only made 3 good albums yet they are so many hungry bands who would love that much love, also American idiot is a horrible rock opera. Just saying'

7 KISS Kiss, often styled as KISS, was an American rock band formed in New York City in 1973. The original members were Paul Stanley (vocals, rhythm guitar), Gene Simmons (vocals, bass guitar), Ace Frehley (lead guitar, vocals), and Peter Criss (drums, vocals).

Known for their face paint and stage outfits, the group rose to prominence in the mid-1970s. Their shock rock-style live performances featured... read more

Their music is prosaic at best because they devoted all their creativity to their look and/or stage show. even their fanbase associates them most immediately with the makeup and the pyrotechnics. long as they had those bases covered, they could just play the Alphabet song for two hours straight and they'd get away with it.
What's more they'll actually take that as a compliment. (seriously, Gene Simmons would masturbate on stage if he thought he could get an audience for it. )

One of the biggest clowns in music industry. Their music sucks. Their songs are bland, cheesy, boring and awful. Most of their songs are bland and generic. Second, Gene Simmons is a big douchebag. They focus on the looks than music. People hate pop and rap music because it's all about sex but these guys do the same thing.

Kiss is rocks mumble rap. Each song at best sounds like that high school band you said was okay when you were a freshman. Just another band at the right place at the right time, slapped on a bunch of makeup and cheesy promos.

8 The Beatles The Beatles were an English pop rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. The members consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They were soon known as the foremost and most influential act of rock era. Rooted in skiffle, beat, and 1950s rock and roll, the Beatles later experimented with several genres, ranging from pop ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock, often incorporating classical elements in innovative ways. ...read more.

Nothing sadder, musically speaking, than reading the comments of those of you who think that the Beatles were/are overrated, and who seem to honestly believe that this musical myopia signifies that you are somehow more perceptive than the overwhelming consensual majority, whereas all it means is that you are inadequate. They are by no means my favourite band, yet anyone with half a brain and a complete set of chromosomes should give them credit for having been the fountainhead and inspiration for much of what came afterwards. There can scarcely be an artist or band (yes, including Queen), who has not been influenced, even indirectly or unconsciously, by their work. What they and George Martin achieved, with the technology at their disposal in the 60s, was nothing short of brilliant - reaching a peak with Abbey Road.

Overrated, overexposed, Undertalented! They might have sold the most records (God only knows why! ), but the best? NEVER! Only the luckiest! They happened to converge at the right place at the right time during a music/culture/societal revolution, and just popped into the epicenter of it all: The Ed Sullivan Shew, on 1 of the 3 channels available back then.

Had that fateful appearance not taken place, they might have been relegated to their rightful place in history: oblivion!

Mediocre, simple, mundane, at best: the perfect formula to appeal to the masses, totally disenfranchising the discerning music lover devoted to the brilliance of QUEEN and the sounds of magic from the incomparable FREDDIE MERCURY! :) QUEEN rocks!

To suggest that I would get butthurt (whatever that means) because you disagree with me is not really giving me a lot of credit, but that's okay. Let me explain why the Beatles are not overrated. Number one is their longevity. Paul McCartney can still sell out a stadium at a moment's notice, even fifty plus years after he started. I would be willing to bet that very few, if any, of today's artists are going to be relevant in 2065. Number two is their albums. It doesn't matter the website. If you're talking about the greatest albums of all time, the White Album, Magical Myestery Tour, Abbey Road, Revolver, Rubber Soul, and Seargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band are always in top ten consideration. No other band has six albums that are top ten quality (Pink Floyd might come closest). Number three, their solo careers. McCartney, Lennon, and Harrison had incredible solo careers and even Ringo's solo career could rival the best solo careers of the leaders of most bands. Number four, if ...more

They were Nirvana before Nirvana (by that I mean not being that good). They've always been overrated as heck. It's really sad to see them this low. I don't care if they were so influential and such, they just aren't that good. There are many bands that can out-play, out-write, and out-perform The Beatles.

9 30 Seconds to Mars Thirty Seconds to Mars (commonly stylized as 30 Seconds to Mars) is an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1998. The band currently consists of brothers Jared and Shannon Leto.

This list seems to be a joke. I only agree about this band, Leto and his band are really very overrated. I actually don't understand what Guns N' Roses is doing here? They are overrated? Come on, they maybe were the last performers of 70-80's rock, while the grunge and post-grunge were grabbing the world. The same I can say about the lots of bands in this list. It's very strange.

I like 30 Seconds to Mars, but Jared Leto just thinks too much of himself honestly. They have some very good songs, but I absolutely agree when you compare them to other great rock bands and standout albums. This Is War tries to be really "epic", and while it does have some awesome tracks, 30 Seconds to Mars is just trying to hard in my opinion.

I like 30 second to mars but they are so overrated
And I don't understand why their fans consider them great band!
They even don't have one decent album!
Linkin Park have hybrid theory, System of down have Toxicity
Nirvana have Nevermind, Green day have American Idiot,
Evanscence have Fallen, My chemical romance have The Black Parade
So what 30 Second to mars have! Simply nothing

With Shannon Leto being higher up on the greatest rock drummers of all time than, Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, The Rev, and Danny Carey I knew something was messed up.

10 Bon Jovi Bon Jovi is a hard rock/pop rock band formed in 1983, which had a streak of successful albums in the late 1980s. The band originally consisted of lead vocalist Jon Bon Jovi, guitarist Ritchie Sambora (left in 2013), bassist Alec John Such (left in 1994), keyboard David Bryan, and drummer Tico Torres. The band's most famous album is Slippery When Wet, released in 1986, and had multiple hit singles such as "You give love a bad name", "Livin' On A Prayer", and "Wanted Dead Or Alive". The band's success continued well into the 1990s and 2000s, and the group still makes music to this day. They have sold around around 83 million albums worldwide. The band's first four albums blended the glam metal ...read more.

In the real world, I think they are slightly overrated. On these lists, it's not even close. When I see Richie Sambora in the top ten songwriters and top 50 singers of all time, the answer to the most overrated band is clearly Bon Jovi. Living On a Prayer is a great song, as is Wanted, Dead or Alive. A lot of bands have made two great songs. The rest of their music is either pedestrian or downright bad (Have a Nice Day, It's My Life). It seems a lot of people on these sites are head over heels for Bon Jovi. They're okay, but mainly I just don't feel it, sorry.

The Justin Bieber of rock music. A real band does not make several Adult Contemporary songs. A real band would be like Led Zeppelin or Van Halen (okay with David Lee Roth). This band does not act badass no matter what their fans say, the opposite of rock and roll. Pure cheese

Just awful, Springsteen wannabe without the songs or gravitas. They take themselves so seriously, Jon a massive ego with a terrible voice.Torture.

Their music is just a big cheesefest. Their songs makes me cringe. This is the most overrated. Cheesy and annoyingly cheesy at all.

The Contenders
11 Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin was an English hard rock band formed in London in 1968 as the New Yardbirds. The group consisted of Robert Plant (Vocal), Jimmy Page (Guitar), John Paul Jones (Bass, Keyboard) and John Bonham (Drums) and was very much the child of Jimmy Page who even financed their first tour. He had tasted some previous success with The [original] Yardbirds and was friendly with some big names in rock... read more

This is the most overrated band in the history of rock music. How are they not in the top ten? At least Green Day and Avenged Sevenfold have a good amount of decent songs. LZ's music makes me want to kill somebody. Plant sounds like a toddler, their lyrics are pure idiocy, and Jimmy Page is a crappy guitarist who plagiarizes because he has no creativity.

This is one of the most overrated bands. 1st place of the best rock bands list. Oh mean. I never find anything good about this band. Their music sounds cheesy, bland and boring. The vocals sounds annoying and can be use as a siren for the ambulance or police cars. I never find anything special besides they plagiarize about 20 songs. They are the most controversial bands when it comes to copyright. I can name 100 bands better than them.

Led Zeppelin is a great band and they do have a unique style to their music, but there are bands that are just as good, if not better. But many people still argue that there's no other band on the planet as great as them.

12 Guns N' Roses Guns N' Roses is an American hard rock band from Los Angeles formed in 1985. The classic lineup, as signed to Geffen Records in 1986, consisted of vocalist Axl Rose, lead guitarist Slash, rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Steven Adler. Apart from hard rock they are also associated with heavy metal. ...read more.

I laugh when people say Guns N' Roses are one of the greatest hard rock bands ever. They're just another bang average 80s hair band. Bands like these killed the entire genre of rock (until Nirvana revived it a couple of years later). I especially believe this band would be absolutely nothing without Slash. He's downright one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and he carried Guns N' Roses to fame. Meanwhile, Axl Rose is the most overrated singer of all time. Yes, he has an incredible vocal range, but the actual sound of his voice is so obnoxious. I also can't handle the band's lyrics. People call their debut album one of the greatest albums ever, and yet it's full of misogyny.

It's only overrated by those wannabes who after more than 20 years are still feuding with Nirvana fans. Yes folks, before that Marvel vs. DC bull we all have to endure nowadays, there was the Guns N' Roses vs. Nirvana war. That means that music bullies (who among their bully activities, they harass nerds at school) are actually closer to comic book nerds. Oh the irony.

Axl rose's vocals sound like someone putting a bag of pissed angry cats being thrown into a wood chipper. Slash should slash his wrists because he's so bad at the guitar. I don't even think there's anyone else in the band besides those two hacks.

Every single time I ask someone what their top 10 rock bands are, they always bring to mind this band. I don't get it. They had like 5-7 truly good songs, that isn't that much. I can easily name bands that had more than that.

13 Avenged Sevenfold Avenged Sevenfold is an American heavy metal band, that was formed 1999 in California. Their longest lineup of members was M. Shadows (Vocals), Synyster Gates (Lead Guitar), Zacky Vengeance (Rhythm Guitar), Johnny Christ (Bass Guitar), and The Rev (Drums).

Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan (Drums), their most notable drummer, passed away in 2009, being temporarily replaced by Mike Portnoy, who was replaced by Arin Ilejay, who was finally replaced with Brooks Wackerman. A common phrase for fans "foREVer" was created after the Rev's death in his remembrance. ...read more.

This band has potential, I have heard many of their songs and can't seem to figure out what's not right. The vocals are good, the drums and guitar are even better; Avenged Sevenfold are very talented however it's the choice of songs which are very poor. If someone could actually write songs with proper lyrics and rhythm for a7x then they could possibly one of the best metal bands around. A song style similar to Disturbed or even Bullet For My Valentine could really do them good. For these reasons I think Avenged Sevenfold are good and outstandingly talented although their songs are specifically overrated.

Nu metal and metalcore type bands seem to attract a very whiny, overly-sensitive fanbase that feel the need to make a scene if anyone ever attempts to claim that band x is not the greatest band in the world. , Avenged Sevenfold and Slipknot probably being the two worst offenders. I like a few Avenged Sevenfold songs, but they're really not that great of a band.

A7X is (or tries to be) the response to that mainstream overrated behemoth named Linkin Park. Funny thing, is that they're actually more of the same, but in this case, for wannabe "hardcore" teens. Maybe it's time to tell the kids Santa doesn't exist.

They have 2 albums which I would consider amazing, and 1 or 2 which I would consider good, the rest is quite mediocre or bad. That said, I do find them to be fairly talented, even the vocals are quite good from their self title album onwards.

14 System of a Down System of a Down, formed in 1994, is an Armenian-American alternative metal group from Glendale, California. The band name is sometimes shortened to System or SOAD. They've always been a very political band since their inception. Often being against genocide and war most notably in songs like: Pluck, Holy Mountains, and BYOB (Bring Your Own Bombs). Serj is an active activist who wants to change the... read more

I do like some of their stuff but they sure as hell are extremely overrated imo. Their music is just too chaotic for me to enjoy. I'm massively into metal and hard rock, but SOAD really doesn't do it for me and I'm not too sure how they became so popular but one thing I can't deny is that they're certainly unique

They were good at first, but after listening to more of their songs, I started to get irritated at the constant and repetitive shouting, the obnoxious instrumentals, and strange lyrics. Maybe I'm too simple minded to understand their music, I don't know, but for now I'm not a fan of this band.

They're good but people just know them because of Chop Suey. Ever heard of Cigaro or P.L.U.C. K?

15 Maroon 5 Maroon 5 is an American pop/pop rock band that originated in Los Angeles, California. Before the current group was established, the original four members, Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusick, formed a band known as Kara's Flowers in 1994, while they were still in high school.

Maroon 5 was good until they sold out. Now their songs are all about Adam Levine swearing and being a jerk.

If anything, Maroon 5 is underrated. They deserve their popularity because they're talented.

They used to be good but they got worser. They are the biggest sellouts in music industry.

Why do I know everything about this band despite the fact they suck?

16 Metallica Metallica is an American Heavy/Thrash Metal band formed in 1981. The original lineup was James Hetfield (Vocalist and Rhythm guitarist), Dave Mustaine (Lead Guitar), Lars Ulrich (Drums), Ron McGovney (Bassist). The group came into mainstream from their Self-Titled album and the hit single "Enter Sandman".

With their first two albums, Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning reaching underground success, their third effort, Master of Puppets has since become one of the most important heavy metal albums ever, as it became the first thrash metal album to be certified platinum. The title track has since become the band's most played song live. ...read more.

Metallica is in no way a "bad" band. But overrated? HELL YES. Maybe one of the most overrated bands in the world. I loved Metallica until I was about 12 years old and started finding better music. I mean jesus christ, their drummer can barely hold the tempo... They are not very good live either. I mean sure, they have some good songs but it gets pretty bland, boring and repetitive quickly. I know they have a lot of diehard fans but I sincerely believe that they deserve to be on this list... and higher up.

It pains me to choose Metallica here, but they certainly deserve it. They deceived their loyal followers by releasing one long bowel movement of awful albums and then tried to blame it on their fans. "Our fans wanted something new! " – No Lars, we wanted Metallica. Their last two albums are hailed as the return of the messiahs, but they are both just average hard rock releases with a stigma of being something really special. Linkin Park, U2 and Coldplay can all go lube each other's sphincters for all I care, but Metallica needs to be way up on this list.

All of their music ultimately sounds the same. Same beat, instruments, vocals, bass, guitar solos, and drumming. I used to like them when I first heard them but they play way too much on the radio. I can't really understand how this band got this popular. They came out with a new album but it sounds the same as previous albums.

Why is AC/DC, Green Day, and Led Zeppelin over Metallica? Metallica's great, but definitely overrated. They've had good singles here and there, but they're right now trying too hard to be metal. Remember that dumb song they did with Lou Reed where James wouldn't stop screaming "I AM THE TABLE! "
Hardwired was great though.

17 Jonas Brothers The Jonas Brothers are an American pop rock band. Formed in 2005, they gained popularity from their appearances on the Disney Channel television network.

No, this band absolutely does not belong on this list. And it's not because they're good, they're complete crap, and that's why they shouldn't be on here. This list is of overrated bands, not bad ones, people really need to learn to distinguish between bad and overrated, because they have nothing to do with each other. The Jonas Brothers aren't overrated because nobody likes the Jonas Brothers, they have ten times as many haters as they do fans, almost to the point where it would be more reasonable to argue that they're underrated rather than overrated.
So no, the Jonas Brothers are garbage, but they're in no way overrated.

This is one of the only bands that belong on this list. Whoever voted for Metallica, Linkin Park, Nirvana, Queen, Guns N' Roses, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, AC/DC, Aerosmith, and many others, to be on this list can go jump in the fire, hit the floor, and ascend the Stairway to Heaven.

Ok, I take it Linkin Park and A7X are overrated (and I agree with that), but this deserves the top spot. Heck, they don't even deserve to be named along with any band of this list.

How is Linkin Park and A7X ahead of this? I love Linkin Park and A7X, this list was obviously made by a 10 year old girl who can't begin to understand true talent.

18 Red Hot Chili Peppers The Red Hot Chili Peppers is an American funk-rock and alternative rock band, that was founded in 1983.

The band's members are Anthony Kiedis (Vocals), Michael "Flea" Balzary (Bass), Chad Smith (Drums) and numerous guitarists, most well-known being John Frusciante.

The band is among the most well-known funk bands in music history with albums like "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" and "Californification"... read more

This band shouldn't be on this list. They deserve to be in the top ten best rock bands ever and they've earned it. The fact that Anthony and Flea are still touring in 2019 is amazing. Flea arguably the greatest bassist of all time in any genre, John Frusciante arguably the greatest since Hendrix, Chad Smith being able to keep up with a duo like flea and frusciante since 1988 is incredible. And their Slane Castle 2003 performance was other worldly. You guys on here who are saying this band is overrated, you don't know how wrong you are. They have so many underrated songs (some to me are better than their popular ones) that you guys don't even know. Wet Sand, She Looks To Me, Desecration Smile, Venice Queen, etc. Just listen to some of their live concerts from 2006 and their Slane Castle performance and you will see why this band kicks ass.

Listening to RHCP has the same effect on me as not listening to anything at all, I.e. nothing. Red Hot Chili Peppers have used the same sound throughout their career, "complimented" by the same bull staccato raps and cheesy guitar solos, and I'm fed up with hearing how amazing they are. Sure, if they trimmed everything they've ever produced into one album, maybe it'd be an important one (as their conflation of genres into one sound is cool in theory), but let's hope that they'd show any passion in it... which they haven't in anything they've made thus f ar. I f the frustrating sounds aren't enough, look at the awful lyrics in each so ng. e ven in the main singles, there's no lyrical purpose or direction to anything - an ironic reality since RHCP is based on hollow singles, rather than cohesive albums (which is why bands like Radiohead and Arcade Fire will always be better).

19 Foo Fighters Foo Fighters are an American alternative rock band, formed in Seattle in 1994. The band was founded by Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl after the death of Kurt Cobain and the dissolution of his previous band. The band consists of Dave Grohl (lead vocalist, rhythm guitar, main songwriter), Pat Smear (rhythm guitar), Nate Mendel (bass), Taylor Hawkins (drums, backing vocals), Chris Shiflett (lead guitar, backing vocals) and the most recent addition, Rami Jaffee (keyboards). Former members include William Goldsmith (drummer) and Franz Stahl (guitarist). ...read more.

Was forced to see them at last Love Ride their best songs were covers from real bands who wrote good music. Dave Grohl sitting on his throne/motorcycle lamenting about not being able to get out in the wind and ride how pathetic? The insufferable douche bag cusses so much because he can't come up with anything interesting to say so he curses and his moronic fans scream in delight because they heard the "F" word. This just reinforces his need to be a jack ass on stage. I have seen Robert Plant and Pink Floyd so many times and never have they needed to dropping "f" bombs to get their fans into the show

Overrated? The only reason people say that is because Dave Grohl was in Nirvanna. In my opinion that is a reason they deserve their fame, it would be extremely hard to rise from the ashes of a really popular band. Dave recorded the first album on his own, he played all the instruments.

All songs sound exactly the same and it has just somehow become a mainstream accepted rock band and thereby gotten a lot more cred than deserved. The band is fine but certainly not "worlds best rock band" as commercial people seem to think...

They really aren't good.

20 Nickelback Nickelback is a Canadian post-grunge band formed in 1995 in Hanna, Alberta, Canada. The band is composed of guitarist and lead vocalist Chad Kroeger, guitarist, keyboardist and backing vocalist Ryan Peake, bassist Mike Kroeger, and drummer Daniel Adair.

The guitarist is unskilled (actually all the "musicians" are), their discography have songs that are indistinguishable from one another, their lead singer sounds constipated when singing, they are a derivative of Creed which in turn are a derivative of Pearl Jam whilst at the same time sounding like bro-country (shudders), the lead singer looks like a paedophile, they performed so terribly at a concert that people throw rocks at them, people actually petition for them to NOT perform, their songs lack class (e.G. Figured You Out, Something In Your Mouth), they only care about money when it comes to making music (I mean, as the almighty end all of all things), diversifying in music means bringing Flo Rida to guest in one of your songs, the lead singer is a douchebag as a person.
I just can't think of anything of merit about this band. If one is forced to listen to their music on the radio while at work, what will you expect to be the reaction?

Most people who have an ungodly hate for this band are generally sheep. Nickelback is not amazing, and their sound is generic usually, but kroeger has a weird sounding voice, but he actually has decent singing talent. Listen to godsmack. THAT is the definition of trying too hard to sing grungily. Their old songs were actually pretty good, but as soon as they blew up they just started to copy themselves. How you remind me isn't actually too bad as well

They could be good. I actually like the singer's voice, to be honest. The problem is that they're so damn lazy. All the songs they write are extremely simplistic and sound the same. And people still buy their albums...

They make really boring music in my opinion. No dynamic and just sounds mainstream. The singing also sounds forced. We are all different and like different kinds of music, but this is just not music to me.

21 The Rolling Stones The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. The first settled line-up consisted of Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica), Ian Stewart (piano), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (guitar), Bill Wyman (bass) and Charlie Watts (drums). ...read more.

They were a solid rock band but baby-boomers believe them to be almost as groundbreaking and historically important as Elvis. I'm actually a fan of a few of their songs but they made some stinkers too. The fact there is a successful magazine called "The Rolling Stones" is enough proof that this band is way overrated and not only that but able to use their magazine to release top 100 songs of all time that list their own songs way too favorably near the top every time.

The most overrated band ever. There are no questions. Seriously Mick Jagger is a great performer don't get me wrong, but that is the only reason that these guys are considered influential. His voice is nothing special, Keith Richards is a so-so guitarist and Brian Jones there only stand out musician was rejected and killed himself.

Paul Rodgers singing Jimi Hendrix songs sounds like a great idea being that Paul is a great bluesy style singer but there is just something about Jimi like Mick that brings out the best in their songs and that would be character in the voice. Some songs need that lesser than greatness to make it a great song and Mick pulls it off. Keith may just be an average guitar player but he is known as the Grand Riffmaster for a reason and everybody knows that Ron Wood is the better player. When a band has been around for 55 years releasing album after album somewhere down the line they are gonna stop creating masterpieces and have less than stellar songs but they have earned their praise and the right to be on top of the mountain with other greats of the rock era. Really the only albums or songs that appear near to the tops of lists are albums from their classic golden years and a good many of those albums have the cream of the rolling stones crop. It isn't like Dirty Work or Voodoo Lounge are ...more

Good writers & good in the studio - seen 'em live and they're brutal - glorified garage band. They're like Dylan - also a great writer - should have had someone else record his tunes. But of course, all music is subjective - one man's garbage is another man's gold.

22 Sex Pistols The Sex Pistols were an English punk rock band formed in London in 1975. Although they initially lasted just two and a half years and produced only four singles and one studio album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, they are considered one of the most influential acts in the history ...read more.

They're very good but I have to admit johnny rotten and Sid vicious are overrated. Steve jones and Paul cook don't get much respect. Neither did the original bassist glen mattock.

Didn't the Sex Pistols only release one album? For some reason Nevermind seems like a punk album and getting all the creidt when the sex pistols did the same damn thing first.

Sid is overrated. Anarchy in the UK is still awesome, though.

Really I need to comment on this band, listen to their music... Enough said

23 Radiohead Radiohead are an English rock band from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, formed in 1985. The band consists of Thom Yorke (lead vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards), Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboards, other instruments), Colin Greenwoood (bass guitar), Phil Selway (drums), and Ed O'Brien (guitar).

Seriously? I think they are very underrated. The way that they are able to change to another completely different genre and master it is really indicative of the genius of Thom Yorke. Take for example, The Bends and Kid A. If you took someone who didn't know who Radiohead was, they would be shocked to know that those albums were done by the same band.

I don't understand why people love this band. This music brings only sorrow and desolation. Furthermore, it's not so good in lyrics and instruments.

They're not perfect obviously, but they're easily one of the best bands of all time. Radiohead is UNDERRATED.

Whoever thinks they're overrated either hasn't heard them (about 20%), has only heard Creep (about 70%), or has heard at LEAST OK Computer and was too immature to understand what makes them so great.

24 Black Eyed Peas The Black Eyed Peas is an American hip hop group, consisting of rappers will.i.am, apl.de.ap, Taboo, and singer Fergie.

They're not overrated, or rock.

Does people like them?

This is not a rock band but they are overrated though and they suck

25 Queen Queen are an English rock band formed in London in 1970. The original lineup was Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals), and John Deacon (bass guitar, vocals). Before forming into Queen, Brian May and Roger Taylor had played together in a band named Smile. Freddie Mercury was a fan of Smile and encouraged them to experiment with more elaborate... read more

I do like Queen, but they sure as hell are overrated imo. Freddie will forever be an icon and their live shows looked amazing but their music is overplayed and I kinda get bored when listening to them for a while. The thing that annoys me is that because of their status that the individual members are considered to be some of the greatest of all time. Not that any of them are bad at what they each do but songwriting and instrumental ability are two completely different things

None of them were exceptional at playing INSTRUMENTS?!

Now I'll agree, Bohemian Rhapsody and Another One Bites the Dust are songs loved by people who want to seem "aesthetically different", so they are overrated JUST A BIT.

BUT, let me tell you that Brian May is one of the GREATEST guitarists who ever lived! Listen to the complex guitar harmonies off of Queen II and Jazz! Especially listen to the flamenco bit in Innuendo. And John Deacon and Roger Taylor were gifted musicians as well.
