Most Talented Metal Bands

The Top Ten
1 Dream Theater Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band from Boston, Massachusetts. The band was formed in 1985 under the name of "Majesty", only to change its name to Dream Theater later. ...read more.

It’s no contest at all. Remember, this isn’t an influence or popularity list. Don’t be mad because your favorite thrash metal band isn’t first. John Petrucci, John Myung, Mike Portnoy/Mangini, Jordan Rudess...my god, no competition at all.

I love A7X but they're more talented than Dream Theater? Bull. Dream Theater writes masterpieces. A7X might be the most talented among the newer bands but they won't ever beat DT (even with Portnoy). Petrucci alone can do a better solo than everyone in A7X can together make a song.
Dance of Eternity is one of the most rhythmically complex pieces of music in history (104 time-signature changes in just over six minutes). And they've even played it live and haven't made a single mistake. A Change of Seasons, Metropolis Pt.1 and Octavarium are better than almost all of A7X's songs.

Overall, they are great - one of the most technically proficient bands ever but honestly, LaBrie's voice turns me off. His vocal skills are not good enough for this band and he just fails to impress me. And even Mike Mangini (my fave drummer) can't make up for it. Geoff Tate set the bar for prog metal vocals really high.

A couple years back, I went to a progressive metal concert with Fates Warning, Dream Theater, and headlining Queensryche. Dream Theater played every song EXACTLY like on their CDs, precisely and flawlessly. I felt bad for Queensryche to have to follow such an impressive act!

2 Megadeth Megadeth is an American thrash metal band from Los Angeles, California. Megadeth was formed in 1983 by guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson, shortly after Mustaine was fired from Metallica. They have released 15 studio albums to date, and have gone through many lineup changes, with Dave Mustaine being the sole constant member.

They released their debut album “Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good!” in 1985, but became successful after the release of “Peace Sells...But Who’s Buying?” in 1986. ...read more.

I agree with DT at first place, but metallica above Megadeth, Rainbow or the God Iron Maiden? The couple Mustaine/Ellefson demands musicians of the same level Menza, Friedman, Poland, Broderick, etc There are out to many drummers better than lars, Steve Vai recognize that Mustaine is beyond kirk, and this keep going on... Megadeth is so far better than the overrated Metallica!

Its sad that Megadeath is BEHIND a7x. I don't have a problem with a7x, but Mustaine is a genius, of the likes of Bruce Dickinson and Dio, with more talent than either.

Dave Mustaine plays lead guitar that most guitarists hail in comparison to, and He sings.
They are not only fast but they are melodic, which is huge.

LOL!... wait... this is serious? metallica above Megadeth? above Iron Maiden or the LEGEND DEATH?! LOL!... kids where busy...

3 Tool Tool is an American alternative metal/progressive metal band, that was formed in 1990. The band is set together between Maynard James Keenan (Vocals), Danny Carey (Drums), Adam Jones (Guitar) and since 1995 Justin Chancellor (Bass). The band is known for their influences from electronic sounds and their overly complex and strangely structured songs. They released their debut album "Undertow" in 1993 and later put out other famous albums, like "Lateralus" and "10,000 Days". The band has established a legacy as one of the most well-known and beloved progressive metal and alternative metal bands of all time.

Avenged Sevenfold sucks. Tool should be so much higher. Lamb Of God, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and even Korn and Slipknot are more talented then A7X

Tool's talent eclipses Metallica's and Megadeth's put together. They are close to Dream Theater, however.

I'm surprised Tool is even in the top ten. They're still way ahead of the time.

Very musically and lyrically talented. Top 5 worthy for sure

4 Metallica Metallica is an American Heavy/Thrash Metal band formed in 1981. The original lineup was James Hetfield (Vocalist and Rhythm guitarist), Dave Mustaine (Lead Guitar), Lars Ulrich (Drums), Ron McGovney (Bassist). The group came into mainstream from their Self-Titled album and the hit single "Enter Sandman".

With their first two albums, Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning reaching underground success, their third effort, Master of Puppets has since become one of the most important heavy metal albums ever, as it became the first thrash metal album to be certified platinum. The title track has since become the band's most played song live. ...read more.

Megadeth is surely good but in stands back in vocals. Metallica has an edge on them at that thing

Cliff Burton. Said enough. RIP

5 Iron Maiden Iron Maiden are an English Heavy Metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris. The most critically acclaimed period for the band was from 1983-1989. With vocalist Bruce Dickinson, bassist Steve Harris, lead guitarist Dave Murray, rhythm guitarist Adrian Smith, and drummer Nicko McBrain. Smith left the band in 1989 and was replaced by Janick Gers. But returned in 1999, and now the band has three guitar players. ...read more.

Iron maiden best metal band of all time gret in concert loved them since they played small halls royal oak music theater in mi. Fantastic group live!

Avenged Sevenfold more talented than Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Blind Guardian, Opeth ...?!? Wow!

6 Opeth Opeth is a Swedish progressive death metal band from Stockholm, formed in 1990 by David Isberg, who invited Mikael Akerfeldt into the band as a bassist. Isberg ended up leaving the band, which lead to Mikael becoming the band's vocalist, guitarist, principal songwriter, and driving force. Along with Edge of Sanity, Opeth is credited with being the first progressive death metal band, although they now play progressive rock. Akerfeldt is good friends with Jonas Renkse of Katatonia, and Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree.

Opeth creates masterpieces, they should be #2 right below Dream Theater. I think the fact that Opeth is lower than Avenged Sevenfold is pretty embarrassing.

Opeth is the most talented. Not many other band's can master multiple genre's of music. Mikael Akerfeldt can sing you to sleep and scare you.

Should definitely be in the top ten!

7 Death Death was an American death metal band formed in 1983 by Chuck Schuldiner. Death is considered to be one of the most influential bands in heavy metal and a pioneering force in death metal. Its debut album, Scream Bloody Gore, has been widely regarded as the first death metal record, while the band's driving force, Chuck Schuldiner, is acknowledged as the "Godfather of Death Metal." Death released 7 studio albums, and are the band that started the Florida Death Metal scene. They were known for their death metal classics Lack of Comprehension and Crystal Mountain. Death ended in 2001 when Schuldiner died of Brain Cancer.

Chuck schuldiner, the most talented metal musician, enough said, right up their with DT

8 Avenged Sevenfold Avenged Sevenfold is an American heavy metal band, that was formed 1999 in California. Their longest lineup of members was M. Shadows (Vocals), Synyster Gates (Lead Guitar), Zacky Vengeance (Rhythm Guitar), Johnny Christ (Bass Guitar), and The Rev (Drums). ...read more.

First of all they are my favourite band. And second, my guitar teacher studied music at university and has a degree- he told me that the Avenged Sevenfold guitarists (Synyster and zacky) are in the top league of guitarists he has ever heard. He said that bullet for my Valentine have amazing guitarists but a7x are in a totally different league that is up with kirk hammett

Avenged Sevenfold are not only the most talented metal band ever but also the most talented band period.

Me as an A7X fan says this is a hard rock with somewhat metal influences so I think this should in top 20,

Avenged Sevonfold has a very unique style of metal compared to other bands. The vocals and guitar in A7X are amazing.

9 Rainbow Rainbow are a British rock band led by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore from 1975 to 1984 and 1993 to 1997. They were originally established with Ronnie James Dio as the lead singer and lyricist. Rainbow were ranked No. 90 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. The band has sold over 28 million albums worldwide. The band's early work primarily featured mystical lyrics with a neoclassical metal style.

The most talented metal band ever, should be #1. Look at the members - their musicianship is exemplary (two of them are from the very talented Deep Purple - Blackmore and Glover):
Dio (RIP) - vocals, lyrics;
Ritchie Blackmore - guitars, songwriting;
Roger Glover - bass;
Cozy Powell (RIP) - drums;
Several talented keyboardists.

A really super talented and creative band - talented enough to invent at least 3 metal subgenres (now very popular): power metal, neo-classical and symphonic metal.

10 Judas Priest Judas Priest are a British heavy metal band that formed in Birmingham, England, in 1969. They are often referred to as one of the greatest metal bands of all time, and are even commonly called “The Metal Gods”, after one of the songs on their 1980 album “British Steel”.

12 Annihilator Annihilator is a Canadian thrash metal band founded in 1984 by vocalist, guitarist, bassist, songwriter, engineer, producer, mixer and mastering engineer Jeff Waters and former vocalist John Bates.

Some of the talents in this band:
Jeff Waters - one of the top 3 lead guitarists in thrash (the other two are Marty Friedman and Alex Skolnick).
Mike Mangini - officially the fastest drummer in the world (his World record - 1203 single strokes per minute). Definitely one of the top metal drummers of all time (since 2011 he's been playing for Dream Theater).
The other members are also very talented - just not #1 in the world at what they do.

These guys are really talented and Hansi's voice is unbelievable!

They are the only metal band I know that has been improving over time - every next album is better than the previous one. Altogether 10 albums and almost 30 years of exemplary musicianship.
I just listened to their 2015 album and what can I say? - I have nothing but admiration for them! Similarly to other people, I'm also beginning to think that Blind Guardian are comparable to Maiden and Priest in terms of quality and consistency.

Slipknot is, and always will be my favorite band of all time.

Joey Jordison. Said enough.

Primal Fear remind of Judas Priest but Primal Fear are faster and heavier. They use twin (dual) lead guitars. Ralf Scheepers voice reminds of Rob Halford.

All bandmembers are masters at what they do. A band with no weak spots - godly singer, awesome twin lead guitars, sick drummer with fast double bass, great bassist/talented songwriter. Their 2014 album is amazing.
Songs: Strike, All For One, Rebel Faction, Diabolus, King For A Day, The Man (That I Don't Know).
