Joe was old school all the way. He caught 395 catches from SEVEN different quarterbacks for 4,993 yards He had 5 seasons of 40 or more receptions from 1964 to 1971. He caught 61 passes for 724 yards and 6 touchdowns in his best season 1966. His number 40 retired by the Giants.

He arrived on a Giants team poised for glory in 1984, we know because he had a great career in Navy and then served there for 5 years before becoming a Giant. In his 2nd year, he caught 25 passes for 404, but the next year McConkey became a MAJOR contributor to the Giants postseason. At Super Bowl XXI, his 25-yard punt return set up a Giants field goal. Then he caught a 44-yard flea flicker pass to set up a 1-yard touchdown run the next play en route to the Giants' Super Bowl championship.
