Top Ten Most Overrated Rock Musicians

The Top Ten
1 Kurt Cobain Kurt Cobain was born February 20, 1967, in Aberdeen, Washington. In 1987, he started the grunge band Nirvana, which became one of the most successful bands ever. He was a talented yet troubled grunge performer. Kurt Cobain became a rock legend in the 1990s with his band. He committed suicide at his Seattle home in 1994.

So well deserved considering what ge said about bon jovi, lol. Even if some people don't like their music, Jon is naturally a great singer unlike Cobain. Kurt just moans on his tracks, but may he rest in peace. I will say Smells like teen spirit is a good record.

I Totally agree here he's called the greatest guitarist and singer ever when he is neither and terrible at doing both.

Very very overrated.I don't like his voice (my opinion). And his written songs are weird.

Indeed he is overrated. He doesn't have that much talent as people make it.

2 Bob Dylan Bob Dylan is an American singer-songwriter, author, and artist who has been an influential figure in popular music and culture for more than five decades.

Agree, overrated only as a singer. His songwriting skills are something different. However, he is overrated even on the Rolling Stone Magazine's "100 Greatest Singers" - he is at #7, whereas Freddie Mercury is #18. Come on, this shows who's overrated and who's underrated.

He is pure garbage. Again, proof that people in the 60's were on drugs, if they thought he had any talent. He must have paid Rolling Stone magazine some money or had blackmail on someone there for them to even list him in the top 1 million.

Horrible voice, and though he could write decent singles, his albums are filled with plenty of boring and undistinguished folk songs and performances.

Terrible singer, horrible voice, may cat is singing better than him. Highly overrated.

3 Elvis Presley Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977) was an American singer and actor. Dubbed the "King of Rock and Roll", he is regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century. His energized interpretations of songs and sexually provocative performance style, combined with a singularly potent mix of influences across color lines during a transformative era in race relations, led him to both great success and initial controversy. ...read more.

80.000 people visited Graceland for the vigil of his 40th ( 1977-2017 ) years since he died and you're saying that he is overrated. Of which other singer could you say that the social cultural impact he had on this world is more important than him? Chuck Berry? Don't make me laugh, as much as I love Chuck Berry he would never had a white audience ( and for that matter influence ) if Elvis hadn't existed. And please, try to listen more of his work ( especcially the period 1954 -1958 ) because saying that Hound Dog and Jailhouse Rock are his only Rock and Roll records is ridiculous. 80% of his songs in that period are Rock and Roll. Don't listen just to his hits! The King of Rock and Roll can never been overrated. Without him this list would not even exist!

Overrated? He is the one that did give Rock and Roll an image. He invented while at SUN records a new style ( Rockabilly, which didn't exist before him and which can be concidered as the primitive form of Rock and Roll ). And don't tell me that he is overrated for his voice. This singer could sing everything ( Rock, Gospel, Ballads, Blues... ) and when you are listening to old rockabilly songs of the fifties it is obvious that almost rockabilly singer was trying to copy his style of singing. The statement of his " overrating " lays maybe in his later work ( mainly the 70's and his 70's shows ) but this had more to do with his tragic lifestory ( people around him and people of the music business who were taking the decisions, his manager etc... ) but certainly not overrated for his talent. He is the King and he is still and will remain this for eternity. LONG LIVE THE KING OF ROCK!

He just stole from black people so otters wanted to listen to rock and roll music. It was racist back then. He couldn't even write his own songs.

Biggest selling solo artist of all time, and second biggest period, behind only The Beatles. Exactly how can that be overrated?

4 Jimmy Page James Patrick Page is an English musician, songwriter, and record producer who achieved international success as the guitarist and founder of the rock band Led Zeppelin.

Nope. Deserves all the credit he gets, no matter how much.

5 Ozzy Osbourne John Michael "Ozzy" Osbourne was born on December 3, 1948. He is also known as ''The Prince of Darkness''. Ozzy is an English singer, songwriter, and television personality. He rose to prominence in the early 1970s as the lead vocalist of the band Black Sabbath. Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath ...read more.

@zxm - of course Gillan is a way better singer not only because Gillan has a 4 octave vocal range but also because Gillan voice is more powerful and his vocal skills + technique are 100x better. Ozzy and Gillan even play in different leagues so to say. And Gillan was very influential towards establishing the metal singing style whereas Ozzy wasn't - for reasons you can imagine.

I don't know about the entire rock genre but he's definitely the most overrated metal musician - he isn't a very talented singer and he didn't invent metal music as many believe. Ozzy doesn't play any instrument and he can't even read notes. He's wrongly credited for many things achieved by other people.

I heard his octave is only 2.so how come he is the one of the best metal singers.Ian Gillan is way much better than him

6 Billie Joe Armstrong Billie Joe Armstrong is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and actor who is best known as the lead vocalist, primary songwriter, and guitarist of the punk rock band Green Day, which he co-founded with Mike Dirnt. Absolutely nothing special. An OK singer and guitarist (at best).

7 Paul McCartney Sir James Paul McCartney (born 18 June 1942) is an English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and composer. With John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, he gained worldwide fame with the rock band the Beatles, one of the most popular and influential groups in the history of pop and rock music. One of the most successful composers and performers of all time, he is known for his melodic approach to bass-playing, his versatile and wide tenor vocal range and his musical eclecticism, exploring styles ranging from pre-rock 'n' roll pop to classical and electronica. His songwriting partnership with John Lennon remains the most successful in history

Most successful musician of all time, including writing, performing, and producing.

Very overrated. Nothing really special about him.

8 Slash Saul Hudson, known professionally as Slash, is a British-American musician and songwriter. He is best known as the lead guitarist of the American hard rock band Guns N' Roses, with whom he achieved worldwide success in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

He is not a bad guitarist, but incredibly overrated.

He is little bit of overrated

9 Mick Jagger Sir Michael Philip "Mick" Jagger is an English singer, songwriter, and actor, best known as the lead vocalist and a co-founder of the Rolling Stones.

I agree with zxm - there were many good and even better singers. OK, I have nothing against Mick Jagger but he's kinda overrated as a singer, even on the Rolling Stone Magazine's "100 Greatest Singers". He is at #16 and Freddie Mercury at #18. You don't have to be an expert to understand that Freddie voice is way bigger and powerful, Freddie range is wider and overall, Freddie vocal skills - significantly better.

Anyone who thinks Freddie Mercury was a greater or more important rock singer than Mick Jagger is delusional.

There were a lot of good singers at that time

He looks ugly.

10 David Bowie David Robert Jones, known professionally as David Bowie (January 8, 1947 - January 10, 2016) was an English singer born in London, the son of a fundraiser and a waitress. He is credited for his experimental and creative musical discography which has won praise and accolades for many critics and fans. The man who the world knew as David Bowie was an actor, a painter, a philosopher, and many other things. But first and foremost, and what he was known for most, he was a rock star, covering every genre from psychedelic folk to industrial. His influence on fashion, music, and pop culture in general remains as his legacy--along, of course, with his unforgettable music.

They call him the kamelion whilst he only changed his clotes but he kept singing the same songs about spacemen.

The Contenders
11 John Lennon John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (9 October 1940 - 8 December 1980) was an English singer and songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as a co-founder of the Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music. He was assassinated by Mark David Chapman on December 8, 1980 at age 40. Lennon was characterised by the rebellious nature and acerbic wit in his music, writing and drawings, on film, and in interviews. His songwriting partnership with Paul McCartney remains the most successful in history.
12 Jimi Hendrix Jimi Hendrix (born November 27, 1942 - September 18, 1970) was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Although his mainstream career spanned only four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music". Hendrix is consistently ranked on lists of musicians who died too soon.
13 Freddie Mercury Freddie Mercury (born Farrokh Bulsara, 5th September 1946 - 24th November 1991) was a Zanzibari-born British singer of Indian descent, songwriter and record producer, known as the lead vocalist and songwriter of the British rock band Queen. He also became known for his flamboyant stage persona and four-octave vocal range. Before he became a singer he has been in 3 other bands (Ibex, Sour Milk Sea, and The Hectics). He died on November 24, 1991 from bronchopneumonia as a result from HIV/AIDS

No, Freddie Mercury isn't overrated in the slightest. On the contrary, there are signs he is actually underrated. For example, on the Rolling Stone Magazine's "100 Greatest Singers" he is at #18, lower than Bob Dylan (! ) at #7, Mick Jagger at #16 (?!? ), and some other people that definitely aren't better singers. Freddie was also underrated in the 70s-80s because his operatic singing style was different from the mainstream style. His singing material was more difficult than the average.

As for an "operatic style", Roy Orbison also had one, and his voice was much better than Freddie's too. Orbison did not have a brilliant guitarist like Brain May making him look better than he was, and did not die tragically of HIV complications, which gained Freddie major sympathy.

SO overrated; vocally not as good as Presley, Orbison, Morrison, and at least a half-dozen other "rockers", not even considering that he's not as good as Aretha Franklin, Levi Stubbs, or Marvin Gaye. And when it comes to classical singers like Pavarotti, Bocelli, or Caruso, Geddouddaheah!

Definitely overrated. Rolling Stone magazine had him rated as the #16 rock singer, which is about right. Strictly a middleweight in his own era, when Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, and even Elton John were much more popular.

14 Lars Ulrich Lars Ulrich is a Danish drummer and one of the founding members of the American thrash metal band Metallica.

Lars is the most untalented drummer of all time. The ONLY reason why he gets the praise he does is because he's the drummer in Metallica a.k.a. the most recognisable metal group on the planet. If he was in an obscure group he would be completely frowned upon.

15 Marilyn Manson Brian Hugh Warner, better known by his stage name Marilyn Manson, is an American musician, songwriter, actor, painter, multimedia artist, author, and former music journalist.
16 Lou Reed Lewis Allan "Lou" Reed (March 2, 1942 – October 27, 2013) was an American musician, singer, and songwriter. He was the guitarist, vocalist, and principal songwriter of the Velvet Underground, and his solo career spanned five decades. The Velvet Underground was unsuccessful during their active years, but gained a significant cult following to become one of the most widely acclaimed and influential bands in rock history. Brian Eno famously stated that, while the Velvet Underground's debut album sold only 30,000 copies, "everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band".

I always thought he's underrated to be honest

23 Kirk Hammett Kirk Lee Hammett is the lead guitarist and songwriter for the heavy metal band Metallica and has been a member of the band since 1983. Before joining Metallica he formed and named the band Exodus.

Good but pretty overrated.

24 Ringo Starr Richard Starkey known professionally as Ringo Starr, is an English musician, singer, songwriter and actor who gained worldwide fame as the drummer for the Beatles.

The Beatles suck. A generic boyband that didn't bring anything new to the table. So yeah, anything associated with The Beatles is overrated.

@somekindofaguy: I will explain why I decided he is overrated, at least on the Top 10 lists. He's usually in the top 10-20 best rock drummers (different versions of drummers lists) but many drummers that are better than him are significantly lower. I guess this is due to the effect of popularity - because the band is very popular people just vote for him. I have nothing against him but he is usually higher than more deserving drummers and this speaks "overrated".

Metal_Treasure sorry, but this time I don't agree with you. He is the most underrated member of the Beatles, and after the Beatles disbanded, Ringo were unpopular... absolutely not overrated!

25 M. Shadows Matthew Charles Sanders, better known by his stage name M. Shadows, is an American musician, best known as the lead vocalist, songwriter and founding member of the American metalcore/alternative metal band Avenged Sevenfold.
