Top Ten Unconventional Pizza Toppings

I love pizza. Well, maybe not LOVE, but I enjoy it considerably. Part of the enjoyment I get from pizza is when I get a chance to try a slice topped with something I've never tried before. And since I'm one of those guys who'll try anything, the possibilities are endless! This list compiles the top ten best pizza topping alternatives that you've likely never tried before (but should).
The Top Ten
1 Anchovies

This is nothing new. People have been eating anchovy-covered pizzas for decades. The thing is, mostly older, Italian people are the ones who still eat it (it's a cultural thing, I guess - I don't know). But recently, I took the big step and tried it and loved it. Mind you, I am a big seafood guy (and I'm not exactly a beginner when it comes to eating anchovies by themselves) so it wasn't too big of a stretch for me. But, honestly, if you enjoy most fish, give it a try!

2 Eggplant

I have tried eggplant on many occasions and, while I like it, I still can't definitely answer the question of "What does eggplant taste like? " since it's a totally different taste from anything else I have ever eaten. There's no really close comparison. But, no matter. I tried it on pizza and was pleasantly surprised.

3 Eggs

Ever tried a bacon & egg breakfast pizza? I have. It was excellent. Who knew eggs + pizza = yum? Of course, the bacon was partially responsible for its awesomeness.

4 Salsa / Salsa Verde

I know, weird. But that's what this list is here for. I've sampled a few Mexican-inspired pizzas and either of the two aforementioned toppings added a really unique texture to the pizza that just seems right. Of course, I enjoyed the taste also.

5 Corn

It's a simple ingredient that I'm surprised isn't a more regular topping choice in the world of pizza. There's really nothing for me to say about it other than "try it".

6 Breaded Chicken

Basically just throw a bunch of chicken nuggets on a pizza and you've got the ideal stoner food. Even if you're not a stoner (good on you if you're not) it's still awesome.

7 Garlic Shrimp

Shrimp and garlic butter on a pizza? You bet. I'll eat shrimp with almost anything and pizza is no exception. It can transform any basic pizza into a feast of culinary sophistication.

8 Pear

I don't like pear. I just don't. Or a least, I didn't think I did until I tried a pizza with pear slices on it. The way the pear blended with the rest of the pizza reminded me a little of how pineapple "pears" well with pizza. Ok. That was really lame.

9 Montreal-Style Smoked Meat / Brisket

I know most of you won't be arguing with me that smoked meat (beef) is delicious. So, instead of enjoying it on two pieces of rye bread, enjoy it spread across a beautiful pizza pie. The results are as good as you'd hope they'd be.

I should try this whenever I visit Montreal.

10 Frogs Legs

Yes. Frogs Legs. Most people have never eaten frogs legs. Period. I know it's a peculiar (and maybe gross) choice in the eyes of many, but I have actually tried this and I was absolutely pleased with how it tasted. I would eat it again if it wasn't such a hard type of pizza to find. I imagine it would be more common in France.

I no longer eat meat, but frog legs weren't bad when I had them. Just small and bizarre-looking. Literally just tasted like chicken.

I got really random on this one...

but hey, maybe calamares could taste nice on pizza!

12 Chocolate
13 Grasshoppers

Ew! Yuck! Barf! It isn't something people usually eat alone either.
