Top 10 Biggest Reasons Kids Hate School

The Top Ten
1 Homework

Homework has pushed my sanity off the cliff. Studies show that homework doesn't affect grades significantly. So why all this uselessness? It just makes us sleep-deprived, stressed, and turns home into a living horror movie. As I said, I'm pretty much insane now.

I hate how my house has become literally just a place for me to sleep, eat two meals, and do homework. Excuse me, I have a life to live, thank you very much. I'd like to actually get some actual sleep, instead of taking three-second naps in the middle of science class. I swear, if I see another "Find the compound predicate in the first independent clause," I am going to rip everything within a 374-mile radius to pieces.

2 Bullies

My "friends" are so rude sometimes. When I got into this program, they said that I shouldn't have gone, as I wasn't the smartest in the class (I was one of them). Now they're making fun of me for being a K-pop fan.

All schools say, "Don't bully," but they don't actually do anything about it. It's sad because all those TV shows you watch tell you to tell a parent or teacher. However, a parent can't do much since they don't go to school, and it seems like no one in the school even cares.

My little sister was in the counselor's office (I don't remember why), and when she was leaving, she overheard a boy tell his counselor that he was being bullied. The counselor said, "Just tell us next time it happens." The boy replied, "You told me that last time." My sister left before she could hear the rest of the conversation.

Also, a girl in my school committed suicide, and the school didn't do anything. They just care about their reputation, so they try to cover it up. Her friends said that they don't think she was being bullied, but they weren't sure. She didn't leave a suicide note, nothing. No investigation was ever launched or anything, and it was a girl I knew. They just don't care.

3 Getting Up In the Morning

School is quite possibly the worst thing ever, an utter waste of precious childhood. You're forced to wake up at 6 in the morning and go into a long yellow car that takes you to what feels like a prison - school. Once you're in this "prison," you're forced to write essays and paragraphs until your arms feel like they're going to bleed. If you even whisper something, the teacher - who feels like a tyrant - yells at you and gives you detention. You have absolutely no freedom, whether the teacher forces you to go outside in the blistering heat or denies you a bathroom break.

Furthermore, school teaches little to nothing that we would actually need in life. It's just memorizing a bunch of useless letters and numbers until you get a piece of paper and can finally say, "Screw you guys, I'm going home!"

4 It's Just So Boring

I think schools should introduce this concept: we study math, reading, history, and science until high school. Then, in high school, all of our classes become electives like cooking, theater, art, and so on. Your parents and other adults might argue, Won't you forget everything about those subjects if that happens? I don't think I would forget the subjects, even if I didn't have to study them in high school, because I've been forced to learn about them for eight years or however long it was.

So much of what we learn, especially in math, is unnecessary. For example, when it comes to algebra, when have you ever had to use that complex subject in the real world? For me, math boils down to adding, subtracting, and maybe multiplying. That's all you really need to know. So, I think in high school they should let us take only classes that we can actually pay attention to.

5 Grades

Grades do not align with our learning outcomes, and it disproportionally drops or increases our grades. If you get an 85 as the first grade, it will be an 85, if you then get a 0, it will only drop to a 56, and then if you get 2 85s again, it will only go up to a 68

Good God, grades are the second most depressing part of school. Besides having your crush taken by a jerk, grades are the dramatic and depressing aspect of school life. I know that I'm smart, and my teacher even compliments how smart I am! So what do I get for not turning in one project? An F.

That's right. She doesn't care how amazing my previous projects were, how kind I am to her, or how much work I do in class. No, I forget one project - a pointless one at that - and now I'm going to have to pay for it for the rest of my life. Grades push me to the point where they even pull my parents into the mess. Consequently, they argue and yell day after day. My life would be ruined because one teacher decided to be a jerk.

What could be worse than receiving a grade worse than expected? It gives you an uncomfortable, burning feeling.

6 Annoying People

Time for a story. In gym class today, we played soccer with groups to which we were assigned. During the whole game, this one girl kept handballing and then threw it to her friend, who kicked the ball one foot and scored. Another kid was ball-hogging, which was stupid. The other team had two people who tried but were breaking the rules the entire time. We won 4-3, but it should have been 1-0 because I scored the only legitimate goal.

Then, the same girl who was throwing the ball said that I couldn't play soccer. I'm in a soccer league, and she barely walks a mile in a day. Another girl on the other team agreed with her, even though I had juked her out like five times. I'm so tired of the attitudes in my grade.

7 Mean Teachers

I hate my teacher. Today I had an exam, and I've been running a fever, so I couldn't go to school for a whole week. My mom promised me that my teacher wouldn't make me take a test and would let me study. But she lied. He gave me a science test, and I didn't even know what to do. He joked about it, saying an injured brain could pass it, and made fun of me. I didn't pass the test, and now I'm humiliated.

He also humiliates me in front of the class. One time, when I was crying, he joked about me, and everyone laughed. He made fun of me right in front of my crush, and now my crush hates me. Then, when I ran off to cry in the bathroom, he asked, "Where are you going?" As I was still running away, I said, "To the bathroom," and then he grabbed my arm and took me back. My eyes were red, and everyone saw that I was basically crying. That was another humiliation. Dang, I hate school so much.

8 Exams

I don't usually mind exams, but when a subject appears on the test that we didn't even study, we go to the teacher and say we didn't learn this - which I'm positive about. Instead of maybe taking the blame for once, the teacher typically responds with, "Well, you weren't listening." Then everyone performs poorly on the test. Once again, teachers focus on the negative and scold us, saying we should be ashamed of our grades. Thanks. It definitely wasn't due to your poor teaching.

I'm not sure if this is the case in all schools, but my school district tends to do this quite often.

9 Physical Education

When I was in eighth grade, which was my last year of middle school, my friend and I took an advanced math class at the high school. The classes at the high school are longer than the ones at the middle school, so it messed up our schedules. We had to miss the first 5-10 minutes of our next class because of this, which happened to be gym. As a result, we would sometimes miss important information.

Before the school year had started, we had informed the coaches that this would happen. At first, they marked us tardy every day. It took them a while to get used to our schedules, but they still forgot every now and then. Also, when one person was late or not in gym clothes, they made everyone run for a longer time.

They expected everyone to know how to play sports, so they never explained the rules. When we started our basketball unit, they made my team demonstrate how to play in front of everyone. I'm not great at sports, so I was only picked to be on a team one time, which happened to be my basketball team because I could shoot well. I never learned how to play basketball, so I didn't know what to do when my team demonstrated how to play. The coach called me out on everything that I did wrong, saying things like, "That's a useless spot to stand!" and "That was a bad pass!"

In our volleyball unit, we played two games a day. In our first game, we were tied, so whoever got the next point won. We had the ball, and someone from the other team shouted, "Hurry up and serve already!" So we did. We got the point, so we told the coaches that we won. At the end of the class period, while I was in the locker room, one of my teammates came in and told me that we were redoing the point. I ran out, but they had already started. Apparently, the team that we faced in our first game was supposed to serve the last point, so they complained. Before I could get to the court, my team lost the point.

I did not enjoy that class.

10 School Lunch

So, one time at my school, they were serving spaghetti burritos and, for some reason, I got one. Why the heck did I do that? It was like eating a worm sandwich. I just gave the lunch lady a sad look and thought, "Are you really this depressed?" Another time, they served a sandwich that I thought was a grilled cheese. However, it was just two pieces of bread glued together by American cheese and filled with mayonnaise, relish, and some kind of tasteless red meat that was somehow dry, even though it was covered in mayo. I couldn't eat it. I gagged too much. Additionally, they never cook the spaghetti long enough, and it's always bland. The apples are super waxy, and the bananas are never ripe.

The Contenders
11 Bitchy Popular Girls

I don't mean to share a sob story, and I hope it doesn't seem like I'm asking for attention. But these girls make my life even worse.

My mom died a couple of years ago, and now I have a horrible stepmother who verbally and physically abuses me, and an older stepbrother who tries to beat me up every day. My dad tells me I should just deal with them because I have to live there for three more years anyway. One time, my brother punched me in the stomach until I passed out, and my parents did nothing.

My grandfather died on 9/11 before I was born, and my grandmother lives in Sweden, so I'm never able to see her. I haven't seen my mother's parents since I was four. My uncle is emotionally and verbally abusive to me and is always ruining my mood. He says the worst things. He made fun of me when I came out to him as pansexual and said it didn't matter because no one would date my "ugly ass" anyway. He said that just this morning. One of my aunts is dead, and the other refuses to see us. My cousins don't talk to me, and all of my old friends have left me for popular people, boyfriends, or just anyone who is more interesting than me. People in my classes pick on me for being so quiet and say that I'm just faking being depressed. My oldest cousin said she hated me at a family gathering a couple of weeks ago, and the only cousins who didn't say they agreed were the ones who weren't in the room.

I try to get good grades but just end up failing. I fail at everything I do. Then, there are these popular girls who constantly try to be mean to me. They call me emo and gay because I like metal, and they've also thrown rocks and food at me. As if life wasn't hard enough.

12 No Friends

If you have social anxiety, then school is practically hell on Earth. For some reason, teachers feel that kids with such a mental condition should simply "get over it." They don't understand the true misery of being alone.

Let's list some issues:
Not having partners means you have to do 100% of the work by yourself instead of splitting the work with someone.
Always feeling alone and jealous that all the annoying popular kids have friends.
If you mess up on a test or do something foolish in gym class, you can usually laugh about it with your friends. However, if you don't have any friends, you're left alone to cry in the corner and feel ashamed of your failures. No one will comfort you or joke about it with you.

13 Work

School is a hellhole. One time, my teacher told my classroom to "Let's go!" even during a quick transition. She complained about my class even though they are smart.

So, what do teachers do while you are working on your assignment? You're right, absolutely nothing. They either stare at you while you do your work or slack off. They tell you to "Let's go! Get to work!" when they themselves are not working. They should just let us say the answers instead of making our hands ache from writing on paper. These teachers should be fired for their behavior.

They scold and complain about students for no good reason, impose harsh dress codes, and restrict our speech. We have to stay in school for six to seven hours, handle big projects that are due soon, and endure teachers who watch us work. We face detentions, homework, and a myriad of other issues like bossy students and harsh teachers. If classwork is not done, it becomes homework.

Other problems include test-taking, teachers who think they're the only ones who matter, no rewards for hard work, and school starting at 8:15 AM. We also get in trouble for no reason, see teachers let some students get away with things, and have to listen to constant lecturing. Add to that the presence of bullies, snitches, perverted classmates, summer math packets, and teacher's pets who are even worse than bullies.

There's also weekend homework, multiple exams, and big projects due all on the same day. The food is terrible, birthdays fall on school days, and physical education is a nightmare, especially with PE teachers who think running is a sport. Teachers never understand, planners are useless, and the list goes on. People tease you about who you like, teachers punish the whole class for the behavior of a few, and bad grades seem unavoidable. All of this brings the misery of school into our homes. We essentially have the same rights as prisoners.

14 Pressure

My eleven-year-old sister is forced to do so many things to be a 'cool' kid. She has to be involved in a group chat, wear grown-up clothes, and like musicians like Ice Spice and Doja Cat.

For all I know, she is a K-pop fan, wears 2000s-inspired clothing, and is not in a group chat.

I totally get the point on this. Being in 8th grade, even though I take some higher-level classes, is not easy. Every day there are due dates, difficult assignments, and tests. And look, an exam is coming up! To make matters worse, they throw in an unneeded pep rally that takes time out of our day and piles on more homework. I find it extremely disturbing that they expect us to maintain good grades given the workload we have.

With a ton of homework every night, chores, and other daily tasks, it feels like we can't have an actual life. Yet here I am, "wasting" my life on the internet. Now, some of you may think that I am just being idiotic and selfish for defending myself and others on this point, but you are entitled to your own opinion. I suffer from depression and anxiety that crush me every waking moment, and the added pressure doesn't help whatsoever. People like me are labeled as "lazy," "attention-seeking," and are generally subjected to rude comments.

This may sound odd, but I don't know where I would be without the internet right now. It has offered me an escape, a chance to forget about the harsh world and clear my senses. I've met people online who have been there for me and helped me through this dark time in my life. I know this rant has veered a bit off-topic, but I needed to say this.

The pressure put on us kids - be it an upcoming history project, a math packet, or the terrifying thought that in a few years you must choose your entire life path - is unneeded. Schools don't even teach us basic life skills! What is needed is healthy learning, not what we have today. In my area, people like me have cried themselves to sleep, only to wake up to the fiery pit of drama, stress, and hatred that is school. Learning should be challenging to help kids improve, but the level of pressure in our lives shows that it's gone too far.

I'm only in 8th grade, and I used to love school. But now, the pressure has turned me into a shell filled... more

15 No Reward for Hard Work

No matter how much effort you put in, the teacher only gives you more useless work. There's never a break and never a reward. The result is that we learn to exert minimal effort just to get by in school, which leads to us becoming lazy workers and not striving for our dreams.

I agree this is unfair, but being 25, I'd say your reward is going to a good college and having a successful future. Kids, if you're doing poorly in school, you should really work on improving your grades. Trust me, it will all be worth it.

No reward? That is clearly akin to slavery. I mean, my mom's job looks easier than what I have to do, and she makes thousands of dollars every year! Me? Absolutely nothing. This needs to stop.

16 Teachers

Teachers aren't really that bad, except for a few things:

1. When another kid blames you and the teacher doesn't look for any evidence. One time, it was reading time and we were supposed to be quiet. Some kid near me made a fart noise and blamed it on me, and the teacher believed him. Luckily, I told him I didn't do it and he believed me, so the other kid got in trouble. However, teachers still don't examine the evidence very much.

2. They punish you for things you didn't do. One time, I was reading quietly and the teacher called my name in an angry tone. I was literally doing nothing. It was reading time. He took a minute off my recess. He does that to other people too. He didn't believe me when I said I didn't do anything. He claimed I was whispering. It must have been someone else near me. I'm pretty mad they didn't confess.

17 Favoritism Among Teachers

I once had a health teacher in 9th grade who would always try to slip little feminist tidbits into her lessons, as if her misandry wasn't blatantly obvious enough. She would put us down, as if being male was unholy and sinful. She once played a game in class where we would add and subtract points based on our life choices.

Teacher: If you have a vagina, add 3 points. If you have a penis, subtract 5 points.

She had low expectations for us males and said the world had the same expectations as well. She intentionally ruined our grades and misgraded two of my tests, both of which I scored perfectly on. In the end, she gave me a final grade of C for health.

18 Test Taking

I'm also diabetic. One time, I asked to go to the nurse because of low blood sugar, and the substitute teacher yelled at me and told me to sit down. I ended up with a blood sugar level of about 45 when I got home.

I'm in 8th grade, and we had an English benchmark. Some of the questions were about which of the four words is similar to the word in the question. Some are so easy. For example, one of them was, Which word is similar to evacuating? I'm like, Bruh, it's leaving. Is this a 5th-grade benchmark or an 8th-grade one?

I have Type 1 diabetes. Since my diagnosis, I have taken two mental math tests. After or during both of them, I experienced low blood sugar levels!

19 Can't Use the Bathroom

I mean, sometimes digestion and all that takes a while.

During recess back when I was in 7th grade, which was after our 3rd period, I often drank a lot of water. My 4th period was art class. While I don't hate the teacher, I do dislike the subject. I usually ask if I can go to the bathroom, and he knows I dislike his class, so he gets suspicious. When I asked, he questioned, "Why do you always have to use the bathroom during my class?"
I replied, "I drink a lot of water, sir."
He retorted, "Well, use it during recess."
I said, "But sir, all that digestion and stuff can sometimes take a while."
His response: "I don't care."

He didn't listen to science. This was in a Catholic school, and I'm SDA. We don't believe in science as much as they do.

20 Popularity

Popularity is not fair, you know. If you're popular, you get all the kids as your friends. Most popular people use their "friends" to bully other kids and cover up for them. On the other hand, if you're the opposite of popular, no one wants to be your friend. They don't care if you're wearing something new or if you're a smart kid. They'll just use you for your homework. It's not fair at all. Do those jerks know that school is for education and making friends with all the other kids, and not for gaining popularity and making fun of weaker kids? I don't think so, because if they knew, they wouldn't care about popularity.

21 Stupid Rules

One thing I really dislike about my school is the unreasonable rules. For instance, if we forget to bring our books or break any school rules - like fighting in class, running, or swearing - we have to pay money. I often forget things easily and have ended up having to pay because I forgot my books. I've resorted to trying to keep it a secret that I've forgotten my books and need to pay. Honestly, I don't support this rule. I don't think it teaches us anything other than that money can solve problems. Instead of being fined, I think we should either be sent out of the classroom or have points deducted from our scores.

22 Teachers Think All Kids Learn the Same

My high school special ed teacher treats the entire class like we're dumber than first graders, regardless of our intelligence level. Most of us are smart, and while some may not be as intelligent as others, she still forces the smart kids to do things like kindergarten math.

Also, I'm more of a visual learner. When teachers teach stuff, I usually get it, but it's easier for me to understand when they show or demonstrate it rather than just explaining it.

I am in the highest level of my class, and I am still bored. I have been bored for eight years. I have never failed a class. I want other material. I used to be able to get all the homework for the week, do it all in one night, and turn it in the next day.

We are not all the same. Isn't that what you teach us? That we're all different? I believe I'm right. Why is the school system such a gigantic hypocrite?

23 People Cheating On Their Work and Tests

We once had to draw a portrait of ourselves, and I worked really hard on it. Many people said it was pretty, and I was quite proud and satisfied - which doesn't happen often for me. We had about five weeks for the drawing, and this girl in my class did nothing at all during every single lesson. The lesson before we had to turn in our drawing, she asked the teacher if she could take hers home, and he said yes. The next lesson, she brought in a really realistic and beautiful drawing of herself. I asked her how she did it, and she started laughing and told me her mom made it for her (her mom's an artist). So, she literally put in no effort at all in her drawing and received higher marks than me. This still annoys me, and that was almost two years ago. I really don't mind when someone gets higher marks than me, but I do when I've worked hard on something and the other person hasn't.

24 Fire Drills

The teachers seem like they want us to be in danger. We had to start over, go back inside to read, and then proceed slowly to the field. If it were a real fire, we'd be in serious trouble! The reading alone took ten minutes. Then we stood outside for an hour before a fire truck arrived for no apparent reason. A real emergency could have been happening elsewhere! To top it off, my teacher yelled at me for yawning. She said, "(my name), stop yawning! People will catch your absent-mindedness, and we won't have smart kids!" Then she put me on "sad face."

Last year in my school, we didn't have a fire drill, but we had a real Code C (a drill for securing the school in case someone unauthorized enters). The principal announced, "Now we'll have our Code C." So everyone hid - behind desks, in closets, etc. The problem was that the kids started shoving and shrieking because they were scared. I had to quiet them down when I heard a loud BOOM on the door. There was a mix of laughter and crying, and it was incredibly annoying. Finally, it was over.

25 Summer Math Packets

List of good stuff during summer: nice warm fresh air, riding bikes, relaxing, playing video games, listening to music, going on trips with family, going to the beach, swimming, and also earning money at your favorite job.

List of bad stuff during summer: schoolwork, bad rainy weather, not spending enough time with family and friends, not being able to do anything because of schoolwork.

You've been enjoying a nice adventurous summer vacation for three months, and once September rolls around, summer vacation is over. It's back to school for another long, exhausting year doing lots of worthless stuff!
