Rock Songs with the Best Lyrics

The Top Ten
1 Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

I know this song has a rip off part, and a lot of people tried to prove this to be satanic (however according to the theory it'd take them 8-10 years to put satanic messages in that song). But the frontal lyrics is actually good. The words are very well placed. Has a pretty good meaning.

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our souls
There walks some lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to shwo
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you and i
Where all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to toll

I mean, what's better than that?

Everythings great about this song be it lyrics, riff, solo or drums

Greatest lyrics, greatest song

2 Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

A song like Bohemian Rhapsody is legend, is inspiring for anyone and everyone. Chilling lyrics, amazing song through and through.

I had such a hard time choosing between this, Stairway to Heaven, and November Rain. How could the greatest song of all time not be chosen?

Strong lyrics along with great guitar work... its an absolute delight to hear this song

The song speaks for itself.. the greatest rock song

3 Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd

Love this choice..."We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year... Running over the same old ground, and having found... The same old fears... Wish you were here"
Roger Waters and David Gilmour were masters at their respective crafts; Roger's artistry and skill with lyrics and David's artistry and skill with guitar; yet deeply dependent upon each other. This song poetically exposes a feeling of trepidation and insecurity they both shared in moving the band's creative styling forward and more in the direction of an exploding pop-rock culture, without the strong persona of their leader and friend Sid Barrett...
Water's lyrics are so powerful and telling of his own self-doubt of the decision to move away from Sid's daringly creative style in order to capitalize on the opportunities and riches of a more popular one... "did you exchange, a walk-on part in the war, for a lead role in a cage"
Pink Floyd (during this particular time) was as good as it gets! But ...more

Both a confession of insecurity and a heartfelt tribute to their childhood friend and former bandleader Syd Barrett(who developed mental illness), Roger Waters poetically expresses all of these in this Program Rock classic. My favorite part- "We're just two lost souls living in a fish bowl year after year. Running over the same old ground. What have we found. The same old fears. Wish you were here." Just from here you can see Roger Waters wanting his friend to be back-not only physically, but also mentally. It also shows that no matter what he does, it's just the same, always leading to "the same old fears". Truely a heartfelt masterpiece(and that's just the lyrics. We're not judging the musicianship on a Top 10 Lyrics in Rock Songs).

This is not acceptable... Waiting for the end and fake plastic trees are joke songs by joke bands... Linkin Park and Radiohead are "joke rock". I really wish I had written this song... Where are all the Floyd fans at? After Comfortably Numb and Echoes, this is the Floyd masterpiece... And if you are talking about lyrics, there are two passages, not that long, but every consonant and syllable matters... Great conversion of skill from Waters to Gilmour

Pink floyd songs always have deep meanings in their songs...! You can feel those emotions and passions which you lost when you listen to songs like shine on you crazy diamond, wish you were here, another brick in the wall part 2, Comfortably numb...! Roger Waters your the best!

4 Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas

Such inspirational lyrics. Always been one of my favorites.

The lyrics of the song is very inspiring and very rhyming

5 November Rain - Guns N' Roses

I love axl rose

Indeed best lyrics with best vocal and guitar solo.
But nothing last forever even cold november rain...
Missing my old Guns N' Roses band.

The Greatest Hard Rock Band Ever

6 Dream On - Aerosmith

Great lyric to guide your life;

Half my life
Is in books written pages
Lived and learned from fools and
From sages Great way to describe getting older;

Great metaphor for getting older;

Every time that I look in the mirror
All these lines on my face getting clearer
The past is gone
It went by, like dusk to dawn

Awesome song with the awesome guitar play..

I love aerosmith!

7 Breaking the Habit - Linkin Park

Really great song and fantastic lyrics... I don't know if it belongs here?...but, I deeply felt it and live it in these days...

Amazing song, amazing lyrics... Truly a brilliant.

Amazing song but crawling has better lyrics...

It should be in top 15 at least...

8 Imagine - John Lennon

I agree with the other comment, except that this is the greatest song ever and arguably has the best lyrics, if any song is an image of peace and is the anthem of peace loving hippie movement it is this one.

WHY IS THIS BELOW SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT? I MEAN THIS IS THE SECOND GREATEST SONG EVER BUT IT DEFINETLY HAS THE GREATEST LYRICS!

This song is a band aid to this wounded world.

Beautiful lyrics. This song is great.

9 Closer to the Heart - Rush

This should also be in the top 10

10 Kashmir - Led Zeppelin

"Oh, let the sun beat down upon my face
And stars fill my dream
I'm a traveler of both time and space
To be where I have been
To sit with elders of the gentle race
This world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait
All will be revealed"

I MEAN COME ON GUYS...!

Come on this is the best. Number one... Nothing even close

Better than stairway to heaven

Love this song

The Contenders
11 Viva la Vida - Coldplay

Anyone could apply this to one stage of their life or another. People who stop to listen to the meaning of the lyrics realise how powerful this song really is.

12 The Show Must Go On - Queen
13 Without You - Breaking Benjamin

This song speaks to me on a religious level.

This band has so many great songs.

This song touch my heart

14 The Unforgiven - Metallica

I was shoked there were 171 songs and this one was missing. Even if you don't like metal or Metallica, just read the lyrics. Deep, meaningful, philosophical. Full with social criticism yet very personal and emotional.
"You labelled me, I'll label you. So I dub the unforgiven."
"What I've felt, what I've known never shined through in what I've shown."

This song really speaks. It's lyrics are deep, and it just gives you the feels.

15 Iris - The Goo Goo Dolls

AMAZING SONG. The lyrics have a good meaning if you listen at 50 seconds and finish the song. To me it talks about how people hide who they are because they are afraid of what the world has to say. I reccomend listening to the song

16 Fin - Anberlin
17 Do You Hear Me - Adema
18 Looking for Angels - Skillet

Didn't know so many people know this band... Yea skillet

19 Peace Sells - Megadeth

What do you mean I don't believe in God?
Talk to him every day
What do you mean I don't support your system?
I go to court when I have to
What do you mean I can't get to work on time?
Got nothing better to do
What do you mean I don't pay my bills?
Why do you think I'm broke? Huh?

20 The Bard's Song (In the Forest) - Blind Guardian
21 Speculum - Adema
22 Evil Angel - Breaking Benjamin

This was my anthem for 2012!

Excellent song!

23 Money - Pink Floyd
24 Fly Away - Lenny Kravitz
25 Nothing Else Matters - Metallica

So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters
Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters

Just listening to the opening Rocks my Mind!

Encouraging lyrics. Should be 1
