Top 10 RPGs That Are Not Final Fantasy

I love RPGs but Final Fantasy overshadows a lot of other great RPGs. I haven't played every RPG out there so feel free to tell me some I missed in the comments.
The Top Ten
1 Chrono Trigger

Square Soft, you've done it again. This is by far the greatest Super Nintendo game ever created. Chrono Trigger's main selling point is time travel with each time period you go to having something different and unique about it. The characters are likeable and the music is top-notch for a Super Nintendo game and the emotional impact. If you don't cry at the end of this game, you have no soul. I won't spoil anything here but just go ahead and get this game. PLEASE!

I agree, while FF6 was excellent, it seems like the game was old, and I really had that feeling during my playthrough. But Chrono Trigger is just brillant, almost every thing in the game is incredible, even today it's still absolutely refreshing and entertaining. The characters, the story, the gameplay, and the MUSIC, everything is godlike.

I thought perfect video games weren't a thing until I played Chrono Trigger! Play it and you'll understand!

Yes Chrono Trigger is a masterpiece rivaled only by Pokemon

2 Persona 3 FES

Persona 3 FES is also in my top 5 RPG, the gameplay is really great, the concept itself is really unique, there are a lot of Social Links to get, you get to know more about the characters, while they are not all interesting, it's still really cool to know their backstory. The gameplay is also really cool, fusing Personas to get stronger Personas is an awesome concept, I loved it. The story is incredible, it's really rare when a game is so immersive that it really drag me into it, but here I was completely into it, you get to feel sadness, epicness, happiness, during the story, and as you progress it gets stunning, it's really addictive, by the time you reach the end, you will not want to finish it, because the game is so great. But as you finish you are completely into the game, and the feelings are very strong indeed. But the best point about the game is probably it's music, probably one of the best I have ever heard. Awesome job on the soundtracks. If you haven't already, buy this ...more

Here it is ladies and gentlemen. My number one favorite RPG as well as my favorite game of all time. P4 was amazing as well but... one per franchise. Mario AND PAPER Mario ARE SEPERATE SHUT UP! Anyways P3FES was everything I wanted and more from an RPG. For those who don't know this is a half dating-sim half dungeon crawling RPG where you hang out wit friends to increase your Social Links by day and by night you explore Tartarus, your high school turned into a 265 floor tower filled with demons that you must climb to get to the ultimate shadow who I will not spoil here. This game also shares similarities with the Pokémon series with the summoning of demons known as your Personas that do the fighting for you. Each enemy has their own weakness you must exploit by trying every type of attack you have like in Pokémon but this game in my opinion does it better. Some might say this game is too dark for them and yes it is pretty dark at points but if you're into that kind of thing. GET... ...more

3 Earthbound

Tired of your traditional RPG set in a medieval setting? Then Earthbound is the game for you! It's a very comical RPG with a very modern urban-like setting and a very modern-like story with modern-day kids. Rather than being some sorcerer with magic powers you're instead just a normal boy named Ness who has psychic powers or PSi powers. You traverse through the very weird and wacky city of Eagleland to defeat Porky and Gygas and save the world. It's a very unique RPG you should definitely check out if you want something new from an RPG

Simply a magical experience that has yet to be paralleled by any RPG since, other than its sequel. There's so much more to this game than a group of kids saving the world from an alien-turned-eldritch-abomination with psychic powers. It's a beautifully crafted message about how even the most unlikely people can change the world, and about how no matter how bleak things may seem, there's always a reason to keep going. I dare Square Enix to ever create something so emotionally resonating as this game is.

4 Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

This is the best Mario RPG out there, period. Being a direct sequel to the original Paper Mario on the N64, Thousand Year Door takes everything I loved about the first one and beefs it up in this massive game. The new partners all have their own quirky personality and each one has at least one comic relief point. If you didn't laugh at least once while playing this game then you have no sense of humor. Another feature is new abilities like Crystal Star moves, and the Superguard which is difficult to master but once you do, you're unstoppable. Overall TTYD is a fantastic RPG that anyone with a GameCube or Wii should own.

Chrono trigger deserves every last amount of respect it gets, bu7t this game is better. In fact, I like it BETTER than Final Fantasy (One heavy compliment). this rpg is the best. Simple yet challenging, like all Mario game, amazing stories in each chapter, and your partners are all so entertaining. Super paper Mario was awesome but Nintendo should return to the gameplay that made Paper Mario great in the first place!

5 Kingdom Hearts II

This game is like the My Little Pony of video games where you either love it so much you can't stand it, or you hate it so much you want to destroy the fanbase. I for one love this game to death and ever since I first got it with my PS2 I never put it down until I got to a boss I couldn't beat. Eventually I came back and then played it non stop until the end and loved every second of it. The combat is fluent and never really slows down the game, the levels are very well made and to top it all off this is a Final Fantasy and Disney crossover. Who would have thought that a game like this could be so good. Say what you will about, "it's kiddie" or "the friendship messages suck" but you can't stop me and the other fans from adoring this game and most of the series. Yeah MOST of it (cough recoded sucks cough)

6 Xenogears
7 Tales of Symphonia

One thing that kind of annoys me about a lot of RPGs is level grinding, it seems that the whole time you're just pressing one button over and over to use an attack on a weak enemy that gives you like 100 EXP each time but with Tales of Symphonia all those problems are thrown out the window. In this game, you've got a fully interactive battle system where you can make your characters block and dodge and attack as many times as you please with no turns and repetitive attack animations. In other words the battle system in this one is more based on skill rather than luck. Great soundtrack, hundreds of great characters, beautiful environments and the cel-shading suits this kind of game just perfectly. With a remake out on the PS3 this game should be nice and easy to get your hands on. Trust me, it's worth it.

8 Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

If you grew up in the early 90s chances are you had a Super Nintendo with Super Mario World. You loved Mario and all the new games he was coming out with on the system but then you see on the store shelf Super Mario RPG and think, "what's an RPG? " You buy it, bring it home and at first you're like, "what? WHY AM I NOT STOMPING ON GOOMBA'S AND COLLECTING COINS?! " But then you decide to keep playing and have the experience of your life. Square made a smart move by teaming up with Nintendo to put the face of video games in a game that took all the great elements of Final Fantasy but simplified them and added the quirky Mario charm and humor we all love for a more casual and younger audience that from playing the game grew to appreciate the genre even more and play more RPGs.

9 Tengai Makyō II: Manji Maru
10 Pokemon Gold/Silver

Feel that? That's a giant nostalgia shock that just hit you. Everyone who grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s had a Pokémon childhood. Building their team for hours on end to become the Pokémon Master, Traversing the world to beat each and every gym leader and the Elite Four, and hey, maybe you just might have found a shiny Pokémon. Any Pokémon game could have made this list but thanks to nostalgia, Gold and Silver make this list. And with the remakes Heart Gold and Soul Silver on the DS with updated graphics and extra features AND WIFI BATTLES this is an adventure gamers of all ages can enjoy.

The Contenders
11 Grandia
12 Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys
13 XenoBlade Chronicles

Right from the get-go you can tell this will be one grand adventure. The overworld is a vast vibrant beautiful one with so much to see you might spend your whole day exploring and level grinding rather than advancing the plot. The battle system is rather unique as well and keep in mind. This is on the Wii. Not the first system you'd think to find a good JRPG on. The only downside is the graphics. Yeah I know graphics don't make a game but this game looks like Final Fantasy X. A PS2 game released 10 years before this game. I've seen the Wii do better then that.

The story is phenomenal. The gameplay is intuitive and original. The aesthetics are beautiful. The soundtrack might just be the best in games as a whole. If you haven't experienced this masterpiece of what we call video games, then I pity you. Let's just hope that that port to the 3DS isn't as stupid as it seems. Oh, and also that Shulk is good in Smash Bros.

I love Xenoblade! The graphics sort of look last gen for a Wii game, but the story is amazing, the characters are all likeable, and the plot twists, the PLOT TWISTS! There are seriously so many, and most of them weren't that predictable. I'd recommend Xenoblade, it being one of my favorite RPGs, along with Earthbound.

How is this not in top 10? This is my best video game of all time, even better than Chrono Trigger, TTYD, and Mother series, believe me.

14 The Legend of Dragoon

This PlayStation classic is an RPG no one should miss. Sure, the story starts off slow and the games kinda boring at first but when you get down to the meat of the game and start summoning those Dragoons, you'll be having hours of fun. With likeable characters, a great story, and a length so long the game needed to be split into four discs... this game will get the job done if you're looking for an RPG to keep you occupied for the summer.

Never played a game with such a deep and extensive story, and there's something about the battle system that is oddly addicting.

15 Star Ocean: The Second Story

I love the music of Saga Frontier
