Top 10 Best Super Smash Bros. 64 Characters

The very best playable characters from Super Smash Bros., the revolutionary Nintendo 64 game that was released in 1999 and spawned one of the most successful fighting game franchises of all time.
The Top Ten
1 Kirby Kirby is a fictional character and the protagonist of the Kirby series of video games owned by Nintendo and HAL Laboratory. His first game was created in 1992, and the pink puffball has made his way into the hearts of fans of all ages.

I'm a noob, and every other smash player has been one at one point in life. Which means they always thought Kirby was OP at one point in life. But on the N64, Kirby was biased because, you know, HAL Laboratory. There's a reason DeDeDe and Meta Knight wasn't in Melee.

I'm probably biased because I've been playing smash bros for over 10 years and 98% of the time I play with Kirby so I know his moves the best. With that said, I've tried playing with all of the characters and none seem to compare with his speed and attacks for me. My next favourite would be Link or Samus. Fox is another contender too. Kirby will always be #1 though.

2 Pikachu Pikachu (Japanese: ピカチュウ) are a species of Pokémon, fictional creatures that appear in an assortment of video games, animated television shows and movies, trading card games, and comic books licensed by The Pokémon Company, a Japanese corporation. A mascot of the Pokemon franchise, it's... read more

Incredibly fast aerials with decent knockback and combo-ability, specials great for damaging, shield-pressuring, and spacing, and the only safe recovery in the game make Pikachu the best character in Smash 64.

It also IS the best character, according to tier lists (which are far more accurate than noobs say so).

Pikachu is way better than Kirby. Kirby is so slow. Pikachu is so quick.
He is also way cuter. One time I choose Pikachu at my first time playing and Kirby was there. Kirby is like Jigglypuff except not as slow. Kirby went flying off the map and died. Pikachu should be first.

3 Fox Fox McCLoud is an anthropomorphic fox who first appeared in Star Fox for the Super NES in 1993, the son of James McCloud who perished during a mission and the leader of the new Star Fox team along with Peppy Hare former member of the original Star Fox team, Falco Lombardi and Slippy Toad as they the... read more

Fox should be in the top 2 strictly because he IS the fastest character in the game, and also, his power moves are quick and decisive. I've occasionally knocked people out the screen with about 80% health with those various moves

Hundreds of games with various people proved to that throwing was the only sensible up-close combat option. Fox throws just as well or faster then pickachu or kirby. But has considerable better range attack and defense.

Fox is the fastest, and his reflect attack makes him almost unbeatable if used properly. He can jump extremely high and his quick attacks make him the best character.

4 Captain Falcon Douglas Jay Falcon, known commonly as Captain Falcon, is a playable character in the racing video game series F-Zero.

He's not my favorite character (I'm a major Link fanboy) but he is definitely the all around best character in the game. He's the fastest character and if done right can continually combo without the opponent being able to counter because he is too quick. His hits are fairly strong, all his smash moves are solid and everyone of his special moves are completely B.A. He also has great striking range (falcon kick and those long dancers legs) and he has a pretty decent jump distance. I understand why people think Kirby is the best but he can and will die at 70%, Falcon will not.

5 Link Link refers to several different incarnations of the same protagonist of Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda series.

The close-up-with-reach king. If used right, not only can he decimate opponents, he will do it without their consent, in the air, then a smash. Two distinct throwing moves gives him flexibility on the edge. Further, spin and up-A attacks gives him that instant safety net when surrounded by a many foes. Make sure you always use his extra speed though, otherwise, he might be a tad too slow.

Link Can be the master if you know how to use his main attacks. Though he may have a small jump, He is awesome against everyone except pikachu (in my OPINION pikachu is a little overpowered, only noobs use him cause he doesn't even require skill. Now remember this is MY opinion, I also like fox and samus, but to me link will be the best.

6 Mario Mario, originally named Jumpman, is the main character of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, created by the creative director and video game designer at Nintendo of Japan, Shigeru Miyamoto. Mario has appeared in almost every Mario game, including games in spin-off series as a playable character, with... read more

Are you kidding me! Mario is by far the best. He is the ultimate damage machine and he spam traps you like a beast. He is the best at combos as well if you are really experienced. If you combine his ability to spam and using his overpowered combos then you can keep your foe in one spot the whole game without worrying about him doing any damage back.

He is the ultimate troll and is great for beginners.

Mario is the definition of Super Smash Bros and more importantly Ninetendo. He is the face of the franchise and has insane smash moves and not to mention he is an excellent if not the best jumper in the game. Should be no. 1

7 Ness

First I started it out with Kirby and Pikachu cause they are easy to use and they have mighty speed.
After getting more experienced in the game my 2 best are Pikachu and Ness. Pikachu is always a great match with his dangerous shocking attack, my predator is Ness.
He is difficult to use, I know, but if you keep practising with this one you can change his slowness into speed with help of his quick recovering and aerial. If he hits his enemy with his 'self-projectile' attack the damage is huge!
Not to mention his mean, but very effective downwards kick he uses to kick their enemy's to oblivion.

8 Jigglypuff Jigglypuff, known in Japan as Purin, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Jigglypuff looks weak but truly she is awesome and cool fighter like Kirby and Pikachu, if you know how tu use her. If you practise a lot with her, she is even more powerful then other strong characters, just use combos too! Her Rest rocks!

She can beat any other character in seconds because of her kill combo. Jump in the air and Down A, when you land hit Down B and any foe (Except Donkey Kong but he is useless anyways) will go flying off the screen. If you are really good then there are so many combos that you can do that will make anyone who is versing you scream at Jigglypuff. That annoying taunt.

9 Yoshi Yoshi, once romanized as Yossy, is a fictional anthropomorphic dinosaur who appears in video games published by Nintendo. Often appearing as a sidekick and helper to Mario, Yoshi is most known for his appearances in the Yoshi's Island and the Super Mario franchises.

In my opinion, Yoshi's a very underrated character. Like Samus and Link, Yoshi has a slow grab and isn't all too fast, but if used correctly, he can be a very frustrating character for your opponent. Obviously, most people know Yoshi's ground pound is a strong attack, but his power hits and egg toss are pretty deadly as well. When below opponents, Yoshi's flutter kick can actually cause a devastating amount of damage. Speaking of flutter kick, Yoshi's flutter jump can move through just about any attack and goes a fairly long distance, making him a difficult character to knock off the arena. Speaking of knocking off, if you know how to use Yoshi's egg toss well, your opponent, when thrown off the arena, will have a difficult time getting back on because of it. And like any character, if you know how to use his combos correctly, your friends will absolutely hate you when you use Yoshi. Last but not least, Yoshi's egg shield is the strongest of all the characters. Not necessarily anything special, but it's a nice little bonus :) happy gaming!

10 Samus Samus Aran is the protagonist of the science fiction action-adventure game series Metroid by Nintendo. A galactic bounty hunter, Samus is usually equipped with her Power Suit, giving her access to weapons she uses to battle her enemies.

Samus is the best. Can go through the air like time goes slow, while throwing to you a giant laser ball

Unbeatable in the hands of anyone.

The best by far in sudden death.

The Contenders
11 Donkey Kong Donkey Kong is an arcade game released by Nintendo in 1981. It is an early example of the platform game genre, as the gameplay focuses on maneuvering the main character across a series of platforms while dodging and jumping over obstacles.

DK is the best of them all along with his trusty companion Didykong. Didy kong fights with his peanut gun, whapping tail and his fast reflexes. Donkey kong has incredible strength and these moves sure do resemble it! They are the ultimate punch which is the one where he circles his fist at amazing speed then there's his headbutt and his ultimate move is the strongest one and I still can't belive he's not up top claiming 1st place! I play as him every time and I always win and the only player that really earned a place in the top 10 is link. The two D. Ks together are truly unstoppable but either way alone or together they'll always lead to success. (and also Mario is getting all the center attention but is a horrible fighter and can't do anything without luigi)

12 Luigi Luigi, originally a palette swap of Mario named Green Mario, is a major character featured in video games and related media released by Nintendo. Created by prominent game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, Luigi is portrayed as the slightly younger, taller fraternal twin brother of Nintendo's unofficial mascot... read more

He can destroy people if you know how to use him. I am speaking from a 64 point of view (since the title of this is Best Super Smash Brothers 64 Characters) but this seems to actually be about smash bros in general. I haven't played any of the newer games so I can't say how good he is in those.

I don't care if Luigi was a Mario clone, playing as Luigi was so much fun. His specials attacks are so cool, especially his fire jump punch. Luigi rules the world.

Luigi is great for using in battles. Using the Up B combo will do a ton of damage if used correctly. I also found it enjoyable to use side a to counter my opponents attack. I keep this statement for both the N64 version and the ones after.
