Top Ten Movements in Music

From Blues to Emo to Disco, this is the top ten movements in music that defined generations. (Not to be confused with favorite genre of music.)
The Top Ten
1 British Invasion - (The Beatles, The Birds, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd)

The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who (my favorite British Invasion band) and the Kinks all changed the music industry forever. I love British music so much!

The birds are one of the most overrated bands but yes the british invasion was the greatest "movement in music. Can't argue with that.

I'm sure Queen counts for this. Right? (This deserves to be number one no matter what if they do count for that. )

This is the best movement.I don't really like the beatles or the birds that much but I love Cream, Led Zeppelin, and especially Floyd. This movement trumps all the other movements.

2 Thrash Metal (Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax) Thrash Metal is a Heavy Metal subgenre developed during the early 1980s and an early precursor of Extreme Metal. Thrash Metal features a faster and more aggressive guitar work than Traditional Metal with shredding and double-bass drums and can range from melodic singing to loud shouts.

The English band, Venom is credited for laying the groundwork for Thrash Metal with their debut album "Welcome... read more

Megadeth and Slayer for the win! And a bit to Metallica. By the way Metallica is half Thrash, Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets,... And Justice For All (R.I. P Cliff). All their early awesomely epic years, which is the 80's, were Thrash. Get your facts straight

Metallica was the biggest and best thrash band when thrash was big. That's why Metallica closed at the big 4 show. Slayer and Sepultura are awesome too Annihilator is amazing as well

Metallica made the Thrash Metal massive and famous, without them, it'd still being an underground genre! Also Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Kreator, Overkill... All of them are of the greatest Metal bands ever!

3 Grunge - (Nirvana, The Melvins, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Mother Love Bone) Grunge (sometimes referred to as the Seattle sound) is a subgenre of alternative rock and a subculture that emerged during the mid-1980s.

Grunge killed hair metal. For that alone it should be considered one of the greatest genres of rock.

Hey, the pumpkins are awesome.. lol, I saw the Melvins in concert last year, they weren't too bad..

Grunge is simply the most passionate music I have ever heard.

4 New Wave of British Heavy Metal (Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne)

Nu metal at #8 and this at #32? Are there metalheads around to vote for this?

5 Motown - (The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye)

The Jackson 5, and the rest... The most memorable to me. The Jackson family changed music. They where the first for music movement. They broke down racial barriers and brought the world together through their love for the human race and for the fans. A respected groupand family of our time. I'm so happy that I grew up in that time and loved and learned fromthe music of the Jackson 5. xo RIP MJ

It is the best music ever and I love listening to it on stereo

I is the best music ever

6 Death Metal - (Slayer, Sepultura, Arch Enemy, Necrophagist)
7 Emo - (Fugazi, Jimmy Eat World, Weezer)

I don't know who Fugazi is, but I love Weezer and Jimmy Eat World, but Weezer isn't emo and Jimmy Eat World was emo, but I don't believe they were still emo during this.

The reason why fall out boy and blood on the dance floor and bands like that are so popular now days, laugh out loud.

Emo is so misunderstood. Anyone making fun of it has no clue about it.

My Chemical Romance was the best emo band

8 Power Metal (Helloween, Stratovarus, Blind Guardian)

Power metal is the best style of music!
Heavy, power and thrash metal must be the first!
Because there are the best voices and music in this metal!

Singers in power metal are amazing, one of the best out there. And yes, Blind Guardian and Helloween are great.

9 Punk - (The Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Dead Kennedys, Joy Division, The Misfits)

Green Day, Blink-182, Sum 41 and then Fall Out Boy all brought Punk back into the mainstream. Punk Rock was huge during the 90's and 20's.

So influential. More moving than any other type of rock music. Should be number one, it IS the best movement.

Was such a social movement as well as musical, should be much higher

10 Classical (Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach)

And Bach exists 200 years before Beethoven. Do list creators know about this?

No. Classical was already huge in Beethoven time.

The Contenders
11 Progressive Rock (Yes, Genesis, Rush, King Crimson, ELP) Progressive rock is a broad genre of rock music that developed in the United Kingdom and United States throughout the mid to late 1960s.

The most pompous, overblown, hyperbolic movement in rock history. Stretched and broke the boundaries of the music that could be made with drums, guitar, bass, keyboards and voice, then added new instruments to the scene. Long compositions, fantastic players, complex lyrics, constantly shifting tones, melodies, and time signatures. Prog has it all, and it's some of the finest music ever created. Every great prog band is distinct; you hear influences, but the core styles are all over the place (Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, and Rush are all prog giants). Eclectic and excellent, prog is JUST THE BEST.

Progressive rock took what rock and roll started and took it to a whole new level. King Crimson's Court of the Crimson King, Rush's 2112, ELP's Brain Salad Surgery, Genesis's The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Yes's Close to the Edge, and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon are some of the albums that defined this intense, dramatic movement of music.

12 Acid Rock - (Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Greatful Dead)

I see how drugs can kill a genre.

13 Pop-Classical (Sarah Brightman, Charlotte Church, Josh Groban)

Will never be a mega-seller like the other genres, but miraculous new singers like Jackie Evancho can draw fans from rock, pop, and even metal, and provide a beautiful alternative.
Time and again, Jackie Evancho brings tough men to tears; bikers, soldiers, truckers, and more weep like little children at her concerts.

You've heard of the British invasion; well Jackie will slowly take you over nicely when you're ready, and bless you with the greatest voice the human ear has ever heard and eyes have ever seen. Nothing invasive, you will respond at your own free will.

Classical Crossover can bring the beauty of Classical music back to the popular music scene. Listen to Jackie Evancho sing and be at peace.

With Jackie Evancho leading the way, a new generation is discovering the beauty, reverence, and fun of Classical Crossover music.

14 Soul - (Al Green, Otis, Aretha, O'Jays, Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye)
15 Groove Metal (Pantera, Machine Head, White Zombie)
16 Glam Metal - (Motley Crue, Def Leppard, W.A.S.P., Twisted Sister) Glam metal is a subgenre of heavy metal that features pop-influenced hooks and guitar riffs, and upbeat rock anthems.
17 Nu-metal - (Korn, Limp Bizkit, P.O.D., Slipknot, Disturbed)

Some might hate it because it went mainstream. Some might hate it because it sounds more hard rock than metal, but I don't really think that should matter to me. At the end of the day, I enjoy Nu-Metal and always will.

Nu metal is the best because it's a fusion of hip hop, thrash, old skool metal and some other crap, but it is great music. Don't forget the Deftones, Incubus and Mudvayne.

The only Nu Metal band I really like is Slipknot

Nu-Metal, definitely gonna get big

18 Southern Rock - (ABB, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Marshall Tucker)
19 Psychedelic Rock (Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, Country Joe and the Fish, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd) Psychedelic Rock is a style of rock music in the late 1960s where it is incorporated, influenced or inspired by psychedelic culture which revolves around the perception of hallucinogenic drugs. It is incorporated with improvisation, electronic sound effects and extended solos.

How can this be so low on the list. Come on people, the Doors and Pink Floyd! Jimi is more acid rock but also awesome!

20 Hip-hop/Rap - (Grandmaster Flash, The Sugarhill Gang, LL Cool J, Run DMC, Beastie Boys)

Hip-Hop isn't the best music but it is the best music to chill to so screw all you hip-hop haters

Hip-hop forever! I'm just cruisin'!

21 Singer/Songwriter - (Jackson Browne, Carole King, Paul Simon, James Taylor)
22 Funk (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, Jane's Addiction)
23 Visual kei (X-japan, Luna Sea, Dir En Grey, Versailles)

Some great bands started out as visual kei like X-japan, Dir en Grey and Luna Sea

24 Punk 2nd Wave (Green Day, Blink-182, Sum 41)

There ya go. PUNK- all three of these listed are great

25 Pop (Cher, Madonna, Tina Turner, George Michael, Michael Jackson, Belinda Carlisle, Whitney Houston)

I love pop unicorns

Unicorns are pop!
