I think that he was more deserving than cloud was, considering he has been pretty underappreciated in recent games. besides, giving instructions for a minigame as his only other appearance is a bit disappointing.

Even though it would super cool to see Rainbow Dash or any other pony in Smash, it won't ever happen. (Because My Little Pony never debuted as a video game series for Nintendo) I also think Twilight Sparkle would have been the better choice than Dashie, to be honest.
