Top 10 Worst Things About Modern Music

The Top Ten
1 Music artists become famous based on image, not musical talent

Music was so classic & artistic back in the days, we had the legendary Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Johann Sebastian Bach, Baroque, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, you name more, yet we even had classic pop & rock along with metal & even jazz, broadway, blues & even disco. Songs used to have meaning & good story & fit moods of people & it took a lot of effort to write & make a song. Nowadays up to 83.3+% of music today is total garbage with little to no originality, true creativity or effort, yet many songs these days talk about drugs, misinterpreted sex, violence, use profanity & even racism. Some even promote depression which can be serious. The tunes are hardly anything to write home about these days. I can't believe all these amazing artists left us & the voids were filled with garbage "artists". Good music is very rare these days regardless of genre. Today's "music" (if you even wanna call it that) also scores high on charts despite their nasty "quality" & stupid purposes. Some songs even promote serious matters like depression or violence, which is totally wrong. Plus some of the most popular songs today are filled with swarms of profanity & sexual innuendos along with drug-related events. Plus it's sad to see great artists go away too soon (some from drug overdose) & reminds us what all good was far into the past. We'll always miss even the 70's, 80's, 90's & 2000's. Those were the best eras in such music & the 2010's were when it all went downhill, though some songs are still good today (like Lady Gaga & Carly Rae Jepsen's songs). Too bad many "artists" these days are trying to be famous for their images & looks when musical talent & quality matter most. The shock value is total garbage. Yet the "artists" today have little to no talent whatsoever. Many older artists put a HUGE amount of effort into songs (yet some like Taylor Swift do), but today it's simple stuff with little to no quality in tunes & makes the classic music sound like the best... more

2 Autotune

Autotune is useful if done right & not overdone whereas many artists these days overdose on autotune, proving the lack of significant talent they have. Now don't get me wrong, the 1st autotuned song Believe by Cher was a perfect success & a hit & some others were great too, yet autotune sounds good depending on what song it is & what its about, but nowadays songs are using TOO MUCH autotune & taking us away from the true talent of music & creativity. Some fear that they're gonna damage their vocal cords if they use their real voices (Adele had them damaged & Miley Cyrus did too though from her history of smoking). Music is art & involves skills. Know how to do it all right.

3 Most of the stuff on the radio is pop music

I totally agree, most of the songs on the radio is pop and songs that are popular on TikTok. It's pretty pointless they should play rock, jazz, blues and etc.

And nobody cares about Rock or Metal. Its never on the news. Look at this - sometimes an music artist gets arrested. If it's a rock or metal person its on the news on the bottom scroll line 2 weeks later. If a pop artist or anybody that's not rock OR metal is arrested it be the headline on everything and Barack Obama would bale them out that afternoon.

Pop music does have a catchy style to it. Now the problem is oversaturation of the genre, in fact, any genre. We need to have a variety because that shows different styles & efforts in instruments, writing, lyrics & artists. We can't all just focus on 1 and hung. Things need a variety. Yet even genres need a variety. Better than 1 thing.

4 Too many artists have died young

Many legends died at an early age, why does such incredible talent have to leave us so early? Selena Quintanilla, Kurt Cobain, and Chester Bennington are all examples.

It'd be a tragedy if the terribleness of modern music killed Bernard Sumner of New Order... Because if he dies, it would be the biggest tragedy of all time. No, wait, that would be Peter Gabriel dying.

That's because the music industry puts too much stress on them and introduces them to drugs and looking sexually attractive.

5 Too many songs about love, sex, partying, and drugs

Are there any pop songs about the government? Or war? Or history? Or fantasy? Or being positive in life? Or the secrets and life about humanity? Or even about life? I know a lot of songs that have these themes. not just love stories, but tragic stories, horror stories, historical stories, fantasy stories, war stories, and grudge stories. there needs to be a little more variety now today.

Three Days Grace's songs are about turning your life around, making the wrong choices and suffering the consequences, the hard times of life, the many things wrong with humanity, etc.

6 No heart, soul, or morals put into music anymore

All music is commercialized. All music is a product. It's all made to sell. Stop acting like it's different now than it was back in the "good ol' days".

Songs used to have meanings, now it's just about butts and getting high at parties.

That's not always true, there are artists today who put these in music still.

7 Parents letting their kids listen to inappropriate artists

No wonder kids in Elementary School cuss these days. My younger sibling said he heard one of his class mates called another a bich right in front of the teacher and the teacher didn't even budge. In my days of elementary school, if you said any cuss word or even said the word "Stupid", you would get sent to the office or suspended.

Yep, there are parents who lets their kids listen to trap music, even if it has a horrible influence. There are even parents that let kids listen to BOTDF. I would never let my kids listen to that pedophile's garbage.

8 People consider one genre of music to be the only good genre of music

One time in 7th grade, my social studies teacher played a song in class and my classmate said "This song sucks because it's not rap." That made me cringe hard.

YES I don't mean to put anyone's taste down but it's annoying when someone straight up refuses to listen to a song because it's not a certain genre. It's just so ignorant

Who gives a crap about the genre. I only listen to a song just for the story or the meaning or the music.

9 Rap

Rap and hip hop was great back then. Back then it had good messages. Nowadays you hear generic raunchy rap with no messages at all. These modern rappers (especially lil Wayne and nicki minaj) are killing the genre.

Modern / Mainstream rap is the worst of "music". All sounds the same, no talent what so ever and it's only about money. Old rap was good, but nowadays rap is should be renamed to crap.

There is amazing rap out there, mainly old school rap. My favorite rapper is 50 Cent. But rap nowadays is not what I can call rap anymore, it's trap these days. Real rap is dead.

10 There are very few bands around that are good

I agree with the stuff about Three Days Grace, Adam is really someone to look up to. He overdosed, but went into rehab and turned his life around. TDG's music has helped many to overcome the difficulties in life.

Seether, Breaking Benjamin, Finger Eleven, Evanescence are also great bands still around. Saint Asonia, consisting of former Three Days Grace frontman, Adam Gontier, and Mike Mushok, Corey Lowery and Rich Beddoe first single, Better Place, looks very promising.

INCORRECT, dear friends. You are deliberately choosing to focus on what's the most popular. Would it kill you to actually dig underground and look for good music? There are plenty of great bands around nowadays that I would argue are better than the older bands. They're just not on the charts...

The Contenders
11 Lack of soul and quality in music

For all of you who say that heavy metal is all nothing but a bunch of screaming and worshipping the devil, GROW UP! Not all metal is like that. metal bands like disturbed and three days grace talk about life and many things that are wrong with humanity. heck, there are even Christian metal bands! Now for those of you who still say metal is talentless crap, go lick a shoe! You people never even give any genres a chance!

Am I the only teen that listens to more "actual" songs of the past rather than the trash today that most others would consider it to be popular? Seriously, there are others. At least 70% of the tunes I listen to are over 10 years old, with most of them ranging from the early 1990s to the mid 2000s.

12 Promotion of violence

Look at Carrie Underwood and her songs "Two Black Cadillacs," "Church Bells," and "Before He Cheats." Enough said.

I've never heard any modern songs that promote violence.

13 Record sales have declined since 2006

I thought this started earlier than 2006 honestly. Maybe around 1999 was when sales peaked.

The only good thing about 2006 was that three days grace's masterpiece album, one-x, was released.

14 Horrible songs being nominated for Grammys
15 There are many good artists that get no recognition while the crappy artists get plenty of recognition

This is true. And we know who's fault it by make crappy song and artists is TikTok. Leah Kate sings crude songs like "10 reason I hate you" and came a hit. And Cardi B's "Up" was racist.

This is sadly true. In a perfect world, more people would be listening to good music artists instead of the bad ones.

Lacuna Coil gets not much recognition, while Meghan Trainor gets too much! See the logic?!

16 Rock and metal are being called bad, emo and gay

Yes! I hate this! I am a huge fan of Three Days Grace, Evanescence, Seether, Breaking Benjamin, and many other rock bands, and I have people calling me emo because I listen to that, but at this point, I don't really care anymore, because all that matters is that I like the music. They don't have to, but they don't have to be so disrespectful to me because I do.

I dunno, my peers seem fine with me being into rock and metal. But what do I know.

When has sexual preferences became universially adaptable insults?

17 Few good male singers

I love JT and old Eminem, but I have to disagree with you respectfully. While yes, I get your point there are a few fatal flaws to what you are saying. First off Eminem is a rapper not a singer, and in the recent years he hasn't been very good. Second there are plenty popular good singers, such as. Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco, Tyler Joseph from Twenty One Pilots, 2020 Taylor Swift, Halsey, and Dua Lipa just to name a few. There are also many good mainstream rappers like Machine Gun Kelly, two Drake songs, Jack Harlow, and Travis Scott.

18 One Direction One Direction (commonly abbreviated as 1D) were a British-Irish pop boy band based in London, composed of Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and previously, Zayn Malik until his departure from the band on 25 March 2015. The group signed with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records... read more

To me, one direction is just so unoriginal. Most of their songs are rip offs of songs from older artists. The best example is their song Rock Me which the beat to that song sounds really similar to that of the opening of queen's we will rock you. Everyone knows queen's we will rock you! Why steal from a song that everyone knows?

I like how one group got 18 on the worst things about modern music list.

Ya gotta be a special kind of horrible.

At least Nsync can dance and sing, but One Direction can't sing for their sorry excuse of a boy band.

19 Artists are becoming hypocritical

As are the elitists bashing modern music...

20 Almost no instruments other than synthesizers

Modern music has far more variety than music from any other time period. Several different genres of rock and metal with all sorts of different sounds to the guitars and vocalists, slow ballads with a legit piano, and even horns can be found in plenty of songs.

Synthesizers are capable of producing sounds you couldn't make with regular instruments. Therefore they're heavily popular today.

That's not true. A number of songs have a variety of instruments. Also, what's wrong with synth?

21 Nicki Minaj Onika Tanya Maraj, known professionally as Nicki Minaj (born December 8, 1982) is a Trinidadian/American rapper / pop music artist. Minaj is most known for her songs such as "Anaconda", "Super Bass", "Starships" and her feature on "Bang Bang"... read more

She killed hip hop with that one song stupid hoe. I know soulja boy was the first to kill hip hop but this song made me die inside.

Thank goodness she's not doing the barbie shtick anymore. Turning rap into a barbie doll.

She was doing well before she released stupid hoe. Listen to her rap in the song song.

22 Only popular genres are pop, rap, and country

Rock is still popular. It's all MTV's fault why they don't reach the mainstream audience.

All 3 of these genres suck in my opinion.

23 Almost all of them sound the same
24 Justin Bieber Justin Drew Bieber (born March 1, 1994) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer. He currently resides in Ontario, Canada and is Christian. He is the son of author Pattie Mallette... read more

He has a voice as high as a girl's, his lyrics are beyond mediocre, and has committed one too many crimes. He should be number 1.

He is the meanest, nastiest, most horrible person ever! How can anyone like this guy?

25 The media saying that Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj are role models for the youth of America

Kids are too young to listen to Nicki Minaj. All she talks about in her songs is partying, sex, booty, making it rain, etc.

In the terms of "bad role models", of course.

The media. I have a question: what is the median IQ of the employees in your corporation?
