Martin Canine's Top Ten Songs of 2012 (As of February 13th, 2018)

...and so, my retrospective series of best lists goes on.

In 2012, this whole "art pop" thing wasn't quite as evolved. Pop music was pretty much divided into house inspired club tunes along with stomping beats, and nostalgic soulful jams. David Guetta's and Adele's influences could be prominently heard in the respective subgenres. The year also had its share of really clever hip hop songs, many of which addressed serious topics that deserve more mainstream attention. I was actually surprised to find that 2012, which I personally experienced as not that strong of a year back then (as a teen, I actually found it to be repetitive and uninteresting), contains the most political, poetic and conscious songs of my top ten lists, although of course a few tracks also made it into the list simply due to their great sound.

Like with 2013, I also took a look at the 200 most successful songs of the year to make sure I don't forget a great song simply because I haven't heard them in the past couple of years (unlike now, back then I didn't jot down all great new songs I hear). As usual, I also wrote a post to go along with my list to explain why I chose the individual items, plus some extra info such as length, album and genre.
