Top 10 Sequels that Aren’t as Good as the Original

When people try to go make a sequel to their first film, it can sometimes not reach the same level as its predecessor. And there’s quite a lot. So let’s take a look!
The items in this list have been selected by the author of the list for you to vote and comment on.
The Top Ten
1 Ice Age: The Meltdown

None of the sequels are as good, or better than the first film. The first two sequels were the only enjoyable ones, while the rest suck. The best thing about this film is that it continues Manny’s storyline of giving him a new family after his previous was killed by humans. In the end, he gets Ellie as his new wife. I thought it was great to see Manny find love again. The animation has also improved as the fur of the characters’ designs has changed, the voice cast is still talented, Manny, Diego and Sid are still the interesting characters as they were in the first film, and there were many memorable scenes. The funniest scene in this film is where the group of sloths treated Sid as their fire king. It properly introduces us to new likable characters like Crash and Eddie, and Ellie. Every scene with Scrat steals the show. Although, the story was predictable and weaker than the first film. Which is an ongoing thing with each film. And the main issue is that it lacks most of the ...more

For me. Ice Age and it’s many sequels are kind of my guilty pleasures. I’m my opinion, they get worse and worse. Here are my ratings:

Ice Age (2002): 7/10
Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006): 7/10
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009): 6/10
Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012): 6/10
Ice Age: Collision Course (2016): 5/10

Actually this is better in my opinion

2 Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

This is the best example of a sequel that rehashes on the original. Many of the jokes from the first film are repeated, the story is the same exact thing except it takes place in New York, and John Williams’ score, while great, is also rehashed with the same beats and sounds. But despite those issues, I actually don’t find this sequel to be that bad. The humor is still hilarious, the new traps were very creative, the new characters were enjoyable, and it still has the heartwarming moments. Luckily, they got all of the actors back, unlike the other terrible sequels. The standout is definitely Tim Curry. And today, it’s kind of odd to see Donald Trump’s cameo. Home Alone 2 is the only sequel that’s watchable.

I’m not the biggest Home Alone fan, but Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is basically the first movie again. But despite this, I do enjoy this movie. Oh, and when I was about 7 or 8 years old, my favorite of the franchise was the third installment. Yeah, let’s not talk about that. So I think that the first movie is the better film overall, the traps in the second film are better.

I agree with this though

3 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

I love the first Guardians of the Galaxy. It had really great characters, had really hilarious humor, the action was entertaining, and had heart to it. So I was excited for the sequel. It wasn’t as good as the first, but it was still pretty good. A lot of what worked in the first film worked here. The movie is a blast, with brilliant visuals and many comedic moments throughout. It’s a simply fun two and a half hours. Often CGI can look cheap, but Guardians 2 is among the best looking MCU films. Kurt Russel debuts as Peter’s father, who happens to be a god and the antagonist. He’s charismatic and charming enough that we believe Peter falls for his tricks. The reveal of him being the villain is expected, but done very well. I appreciated how they didn’t overuse Baby Groot. It would’ve been easy to do so since he’s the big marketing chip. Yondu is the standout and he delivers one of my favorite lines ever, “I’M MARY POPPINS, Y’ALL! ” His death was also very ...more

I thought it was just as good

4 Iron Man 2

This was a massive step backwards from the first Iron Man film. This film sucks. This is easily the worst film in the MCU. This sequel unfortunately from too much world building and setting up The Avengers, which it didn’t even directly lead up to it. Tony Stark is an unlikable jerk for most of the film! While this is somewhat justified because he was about being slowly poisoned to death, which it doesn’t make him any less unlikable! The film can get downright boring at times since it focuses mostly on exposition with barely any time to breathe from all the information being fed to you. The pacing is too long, like Tony’s house arrest scene, it takes too long to solve. Justin Hammer, the other villain, was very annoying and extremely forgettable. He’s a depicted as a young billionaire who behaves in an over the top and exaggerated manner which his only motivation is to rip off Tony’s Iron Man technology and sell it, instead of the elderly, cold hearted, and brilliant ...more

5 Ralph Breaks the Internet

While not as fantastic as its predecessor, this film is great! Like the other sequels, this continues the story from before. The best thing is that it teaches a decently executed lesson about knowing when to let friends go when the time has comes for them to leave. I even cried when Vanellope said goodbye to Ralph. The characters are still likable and unforgettable, mainly Ralph and Vanellope. The movie looks great to look at and tells a heartfelt story. Both Ralph and Vanellope grow into better characters by the end, and it’s appreciated how Vanellope is allowed to not be so reliant on Ralph. She gets to do her own thing that she wants with no worries. It introduces us to new and very interesting characters like Shank, Yes, and KnowsMore. There are many hilarious, and well executed scenes throughout the film. Some of the three dimensional designs for the Disney Princesses were pretty good. Although, what makes this a step backwards from the first film is that the internet jokes, ...more

I though it was okay. Like many others, I really enjoyed the princesses scene!

6 Deadpool 2

I love the first Deadpool film. It was all that I wanted in a Deadpool film. Hilarious humor, great characters, amazing action, and perfect fourth wall breaking! I was excited for the sequel, and it definitely didn’t disappoint! This isn’t as good as the first one. The pacing wasn’t too good. The flow of the story didn’t go as smooth as the first one. And the CGI, while great, is pretty much noticeable at times. It looked a little bit like late PS3 graphics. Not as bad as Justice League, but it could’ve been better. Besides that, this is a great sequel! The humor is excellent and outlandish, with very crude jokes that take direct jabs at other modern superheroes like Wolverine, Batman, and Green Lantern. The action scenes are very kinetic and fluid. Swords, fists and superheroes pack a punch with every hit! Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool is still fantastic as usual. This time, Deadpool has more character and conflict while still keeping his irresponsibility and fourth wall ...more

7 Jurassic Park: The Lost World

The first Jurassic Park was amazing. So I was not surprised that this was not as spectacular as the original. That is a bar nearly impossible to surpass. This lacks the charm and excitement of the original. The plot of this film is a bit unsatisfactory. Almost the first hour of this film is just people talking to one another, that’s it. During the film, the action doesn’t pay for it. The scene where a woman is lying on the glass, hoping it won’t break, is very intense. The acting in this film is good, Jeff Goldblum is a great actor. The acting in this is nowhere near as good as Jurassic Park. I found some scenes that could’ve been filmed better. If they were done better, it would’ve made the film a bit more suspenseful. The score is great, but some scenes are put with the wrong music. Plus, some music are recycled from the original. Just like the first, the CGI is great. The special effects are probably the best thing about this film. What I do like about The Lost World is ...more

I actually like it slightly more

8 Avengers: Age of Ultron

The second installment of the Avengers is an action heavy, but overall disappointing entry in the franchise. Objectively not as good as the first film. There is a lot of good comedic elements and strong character moments, especially Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Captain America. There is many more action sequences than the first movie, but this payoff does not work. The movie feels too long and drawn out at times throughout. Ultron is an underwhelming villain, which isn’t new for the MCU. After the standout performance of Tom Hiddleston as Loki in the first film, any new villain was going to have a tough time filling his shoes. The film does a good job of showing some of the internal conflict with the team, but in the end, their teamwork is needed to defeat Ultron. However, this is often overshadowed with the introduction of new characters who are not disinteresting compared to the original Avengers team. Quicksilver was honestly ruined. Aaron Taylor Johnson was fine as the role, but it ...more

Bad movie

9 Ghostbusters II

I don’t really find the first Ghostbusters amazing like people are making it out to be, but it’s still a fun movie. I haven’t watched this sequel until few months ago. It was pretty bad. This one was a letdown and wasn’t as fun as the original. This is a stereotype of a bad sequel. There is very little humor, the story is almost identical to the first one, and was almost as if it was made only trick you into thinking it was good based off of the success of the first film then just completely rips you off. The only things that are actually worth mentioning we the lovable ghost Slimer and the relationship between Rick Moranis character and Annie Potts’ character. Still, that wasn’t enough to save the film from being a pretty bad film. At least it’s better than the 2016 remake! Hope the next one will be better.

I like this film, but most of the other films on the list I actually think are better than the original or I don't like either. So since this is quite clearly not as great as the first film, had to vote for it. It's solid though.

10 Saw II

I love the first Saw movie. It had great characters, had really cool traps, and had a really chilling twist that still gets me to this day. This one was a huge step down from the first film. Does it mean it’s bad? Actually, no. I actually enjoyed this sequel. The acting in this film was pretty good, but definitely not Oscar worthy. I liked the new characters in the film, but they weren’t as good as the characters in the first film. The new traps were pretty cool. That needle pit is the most hardest trap in the franchise to watch. I think the best part about this film is the fact that it actually feels like a jigsaw puzzle. At the end of the movie, it fits really well with the first. Although, like all the sequels, they focus on the gore rather than the story. The twist was honestly dumb. Like I said, the first film had my favorite twist in horror history, but the twist in this one didn’t live up to it. And the characters didn’t have as much depth or any kind of story to ...more
