Albums that are Often Considered the Best of a Band but They are Not

The Top Ten

1 Reign In Blood - Slayer

The thing with bands like Metallica and Slayer, is that they are great bands and what makes a great band great is having multiple great albums, if you can clearly state that one album is the best it usually means that the band is a one album wonder
For Slayer I love almost equally South of Heaven(most catchy songs), Raining Blood (most heavy album), Seasons in the Abyss (most diverse album) and Show no Mercy - germshep24

This are just my opinions. - HEAVYMETALTHUNDER12345

Only thanks to Raining Blood and Angel of Death.Has some other good songs, but half of it is filler and very repetitive.South of Heaven,Show No Mercy and Season in the Abyss are way better.I respect the album for it's influence though. - HEAVYMETALTHUNDER12345

2 Master of Puppets - Metallica

Metallica is an amazing band and I love almost equally Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, Kill Em All, and...And Justice For All, in that there is no song of these albums I don't like - germshep24

For me this is tied with Ride the Lighting - Metal_Treasure

Ride the Lightning! - LightningStrike

I am a Ride the Lightning guy too. - ParasN2000

3 Back in Black - AC/DC

Bon Scott albums were better - IronFist13

4 Paranoid - Black Sabbath

I like Paranoid, but I honestly end up listening to Master of Reality more frequently. Maybe it's because of the thicker sound. - Gg2000

"Heaven and Hell" is the real deal! But even Master of Reality is better than Paranoid. - Metal_Treasure

Man I love this album but there are other good ones too. - LightningStrike

Black Sabbath is a great band they have multiple albums that are equally as great you have Paranoid and Masters of Reality from the Ozzy days, then you have Heaven and Hell and Dehumanizer of the known Ozzy albums. What makes any of these albums better than the other really comes down to personal preference, one album just has more of your top 10 songs from the band on it and it could very wel change from time to time - germshep24

5 A Night at the opera - Queen

Jazz (1978) is better. - I80

I prefer Sheer Heart Attack and their debut to this.I mean, except Bohemian Rhapsody, there is nothing really impressive here. - HEAVYMETALTHUNDER12345

6 1984 - Van Halen

1984 may be more popular, but most fans (including me) prefer the debut album. - Gg2000

Don't like this album at all. Except one song.Their debut is pretty good. - HEAVYMETALTHUNDER12345

7 The Number Of The Beast - Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden again is another great band when a multitude of great Albums: Powerslave, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Killers, Debut Album, and The Number of the Beast all could be argued to be their best album - germshep24

Some fans also pick Piece of Mind, Brave New World or A Matter of Life and Death as their favorite. - Alkadikce

8 Nevermind - Nirvana

Definitely In Utero. It was intentionally made less accessible, less polished bringing a more raw and natural sound. The lyrics were build on themes unlike Nevermind.

As for Bleach, it was even worse than nevermind. It's mostly an okay album, nothing special or extraordinary about it. The drum parts in it especially sucked as their drummer at the time, Chad Channing was inexperienced and didn't fit into Nirvana's sound. - Joeljohns249

Not even the most grungy album. I prefer In Utero and Bleach. - Userguy44

9 Rust In Peace - Megadeth

Except the first two songs,i don't see nothing great here. - HEAVYMETALTHUNDER12345

Megadeth I think is the one band where their albums equally mix the great songs across their album, each album has 2-3 standout songs. No one album has an overwhelming majority of their best songs
or to put it the negative way Megadeth doesn't have a great album, just a bunch of good albums
RIP: Holy Wars, Hangar, and Tornado of Souls
CTE: Symphony, Sweating Bullets, and Skin O My Teeth
Youthanasia: A Toute Le Monde and Trains of Consequences - germshep24

10 Hysteria - Def Leppard

Their most popular, not their best.

The Contenders

11 Close to the Edge - Yes

I consider a number of Yes albums to be better than this one, with Tales from Topographic Oceans being their best. - Crwth

Who names their own band Yes?

12 Machine Head - Deep Purple

This album has a filler,Never Before. While In Rock is great from the start to finish.Plus it has their best song Child in Time. - HEAVYMETALTHUNDER12345

13 American Idiot - Green Day
14 Stay Hungry - Twisted Sister

Their Debut album is much more heavier and better. - HEAVYMETALTHUNDER12345

15 Octavarium - Dream Theater
16 Among the Living - Anthrax
17 Ramones - Ramones

Rocket to Russia is a bit better. - HEAVYMETALTHUNDER12345

18 Abbey Road - The Beatles

"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely hearts club" is generally perceived as the best. - RobertWisdom

19 Moving Pictures - Rush
20 Sublime - Sublime

I think 40 oz. to Freedom was their best work - IronFist13

21 Sempiternal - Bring Me the Horizon
22 Slippery When Wet - Bon Jovi

I’d Say Keep The Faith and These Days were better albums. Much more mature.
