the album was incredibly popular of course, but the Beatles were already the biggest act in the world when it came out, and had been so for over 3 years.

This was really the turning point that the album Rubber Soul had hinted strongly at; The Beatles were far more than just the biggest rock band of the day, they were in fact one of the greatest things that had ever happened in the history of music.
