Top 10 Albums That Popularized a Genre

The Top Ten
1 Kill Em All - Metallica

I like this list - very good idea!

Thrash metal

2 Nevermind - Nirvana

Grunge went mainstream.

3 The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd

Disagree. At this point, the Progressive Rock era was well-on, and other progressive albums had even reached #1, though this is by far the best-selling progressive album ever.

4 The Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden
5 Cowboys from Hell - Pantera

It started groove metal.

6 Dookie - Green Day

This album definentley was a huge step to popularity for punk.

7 Ramones - The Ramones The Ramones were an American punk rock band that formed in the New York City neighborhood of Forest Hills, Queens, in 1974. They are often cited as the first band to define the punk rock sound.

(American) punk rock.

8 Paranoid - Black Sabbath
9 Mother's Milk - Red Hot Chili Peppers
10 Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles

I disagree. It is supposed to be the album that popularized psychedelic rock, but the genre was already full throttle when they released this album.

What?
Which genre did this popularize?
the album was incredibly popular of course, but the Beatles were already the biggest act in the world when it came out, and had been so for over 3 years.

The Contenders
11 The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars - David Bowie
12 Days of Future Passed - The Moody Blues

This album was the beginning of both Prog Rock and Symphonic Rock.

13 Sweetheart of the Rodeo - The Byrds

The very first "country rock" album.

14 Licensed to Ill - The Beastie Boys
15 Revolver - The Beatles

This was really the turning point that the album Rubber Soul had hinted strongly at; The Beatles were far more than just the biggest rock band of the day, they were in fact one of the greatest things that had ever happened in the history of music.

This is more accurate as for the beginning of psychedelic rock than Sgt Pepper's.

16 For Your Love - The Yardbirds

The "sound" that would become typified by Led Zeppelin was first heard in this 1965 album that straddled Eric Clapton's departure from the band, and Jeff Beck's arrival. No big surprise that a few years later, when Jimmy Page arrived, then a few months later Beck departed, the band morphed into... Led Zeppelin.

17 Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys
18 The Doors - The Doors

Ever since this album came out, every tough guy from Axl Rose to Steven Tyler has been trying to imitate Jim Morrison. They can wear the leather pants, but they can never be Jim.

19 Follow the Leader - Korn

I may not like this album, but it has popularized a genre. Not a good one though.

20 Here's Little Richard - Little Richard
21 Post - Bjork
22 Enema of the State - Blink-182
23 Hybrid Theory - Linkin Park
24 John Lennon - Imagine

This John Lennon masterpiece helped soft rock with songs like Imagine, Jealous Guy, and How.

25 In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson

Defined Progressive Rock, though it did not break as mainstream as later efforts by other bands.
