Top Ten American Folk Rock Groups

This is the top popular and talented folk rock groups, excluding the bands/groups that often backed "solo" artists and played behind the individual's featured name.
The Top Ten
1 Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

Tough choice between #s 1&2 for me but I went with CSNY partly due to 4 strong featured members as well as figuring PetSounds will likely appropriately vote for Simon & Garfunkel if/when he sees this list! 😉

2 Simon and Garfunkel Simon & Garfunkel were an American folk rock duo consisting of singer-songwriter Paul Simon and singer Art Garfunkel.

Their harmony is so incredible that it's usually impossible to distinguish between Paul's and Art's voices.

3 The Mamas and The Papas The Mamas & the Papas were an American folk rock vocal group formed in Los Angeles, California which recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968. The group was a defining force in the music scene of the counterculture of the 1960s. The group was composed of Americans John Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips and Canadian Denny Doherty. Their sound was based on vocal harmonies arranged by John Phillips, the songwriter, musician, and leader of the group, who adapted folk to the new beat style of the early 1960s. ...read more.

The anti-Cass Elliot troll continues to spout nonsense... like a scorned lover.
What happened? Did she turn down your advances or eat your ham sandwich?

4 The Byrds The Byrds were an American rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1964. The band underwent multiple line-up changes throughout its existence, with frontman Roger McGuinn remaining the sole consistent member, until the group disbanded in 1973. Although they only managed to attain the huge commercial ...read more.
5 Buffalo Springfield Buffalo Springfield was an American-Canadian rock band, formed in Los Angeles in 1966. Their original lineup included Stephen Stills, Dewey Martin, Bruce Palmer, Richie Furay, and Neil Young.

They hated touring, and so were mostly known on the west-coast except for the hit "For What Its Worth", which became an anti-Vietnam War anthem, even though it was about student riots on the Sunset Strip.

I've been getting into them recently, thanks to an anonymous recommendation. If you're reading this, I thank you.

6 America

Capturing the essence and melancholy of the american countryside and hardships of life through beautifully composed pieces.

7 The Lovin Spoonful The Lovin' Spoonful is a U.S. rock band, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and well known for a number of hit songs in the 1960s including "Summer in the City", "Do You Believe In Magic", "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?", and "Daydream".
8 Peter, Paul and Mary

In reality they were just Folkies, but they did rock every now and then.

I love Peter, Paul, and Mary.

Another strong and proper criticism; I may replace or demote them in the ranking.
Although one song does not define a genre, they did "...Dig Rock n Roll Music" 😉

9 The Kingston Trio

Not really Folk-Rock, they were just "Folk", though they were very good.

10 The Youngbloods
The Contenders
11 Seals and Crofts

Personally favored over strong candidate Poco

12 Bread

Greatest love songs ever written!

13 Poco

Superb pedigree in this genre: Also formed by the former members of Buffalo Springfield, Richie Furay and Jim Messina.

14 McGuinn, Clark, & Hillman
15 The Oh Hellos
