Top Ten Animated Movie Franchises Ruined by Their Sequels

The Top Ten
1 Ice Age

The cave painting scene in the original movie is one of the most underrated scenes in animated movie history. It's so beautiful and tragic, and tells you everything you need to know about Manny purely through visuals. The sequels are so bad that people forget that the original Ice Age is actually a legitimately great movie with compelling characters who go through arcs and actual drama.

Have to disagree on this one. As someone who always disliked the original Ice Age for its uninteresting and slightly bland plot, it should come off as natural that I found the sequels to be all in all better and more interesting (excluding Collision Course which in my opinion was a little worse than the rest). Especially third and fourth movies were the jam, as I like my dinos and pirates.

I don't like the latest sequel; it was nothing but a cash grab. It sucks that Blue Sky Animation doesn't have anything else as profitable. They need to focus on expanding their franchise and putting out quality films rather than running Ice Age into the ground.

The first one is one of my favorite childhood memories, the franchise has gone so low and lost the magic it once had. Dinosaurs then pirates then outer space ( really outer space? You know if a franchise goes on long enough, it will end up in space)

2 Despicable Me

The way I see it, the first movie was a fun movie overall. Nothing really shined but it was good. The 2nd and 3rd movie on the other hand had its really amazing parts, but were also accomponied by atrocious scenes like Gru's date with Shannon in the 2nd or the Margo's stalker in the 3rd movie. Overall, make of it what you will, but I liked the progression.

Despicable Me - Amazing
Despicable Me 2 - Good
Minions - I can't say it. There are kids around
Despicable Me 3 - A long lost twin? Like Treehouse of Horror VII hasn't already established that.

The first Despicable Me was mediocre, the second one was garbage, Minions was pointless, and the third one just might be the worst one of them all.

The stupid minions movie and their over media coverage. Cash grab sequels that nobody asked for. Its just despicable...sorry I had to do that.

3 The Land Before Time

The typical example. I admittedly like some of the sequels (II, IV, V, VII, X and XIV), but alas, there's more than enough. There's even a T.V. show based on the film series, and if you ask me, they should have stick to that instead of making more films.

XIII is a special case. Even die-hard TLBT fans who like all of the films and the T.V. show will state that movie XIII is THE exception. It's that terrible.

They didn't even need to make one sequel. 14? Really?

To many sequels for so many years killed it

14 Sequels are way too much

4 Shrek

I honestly think Shrek is overrated, but the first one is classic that changed movies, 2nd is great, 3rd is dependent upon the person, 4th...god. Plus puss in boots didn't help.

I liked 2nd and 3rd but the 4th..., that movie doesn't even expand on anything at all

Shrek 2 was okay but yeah the rest sucked...

Shrek 2 is the best Shrek movie.

5 Lilo and Stitch

This movie is an. Amazing underrated movie that is downright awesome... Then 2 stupid seq

Just direct to DVD sequels here, and they sucked.

Leroy and Stitch wasn't too bad

6 Madagascar

Not actually. Because it was always a pretty alright franchise. Not amazing, the movies beared the mostly the same quality. It's the type of movie series that was always meant to be a trilogy as the 1st and 2nd movie didn't end with the friends returning to New York city. Although I must admit the 3rd one kinda ruined the franchise with the circus theme but it didn't totally jump the shark I'll admit that.

Loved the first two but the third one was one of the first terrible movies I remember watching.

Actually the third film was better than the previous two

The last one was terrible and a ok penguins show and terrible penguins movie

7 Kung Fu Panda

No no no. 2nd movie is a legend! Although 3rd was a little flat compared to the rest, it still was amazing

That movie didn't deserve one sequel, let alone a 3rd and a T.V. show

I liked the second one, but it really didn't needed a third one.

I thought the first 2 were good. 3rd one not so much

8 Open Season

This one was mediocre at decent but the sequels are pure trash.

Just like with Shrek, the third one was the absolute worst.

I hated the original. Haven't seen the rest. by the way 3rd one rips off Madagascar 3.

9 Cars

The only movie here where the sequels were actually bad. Ice Age 2 and 3 are great and I loved Madagascar 2 but lets face it. Cars 2 and 3 are BAD

How? The first and the third one were well made, and everyone probably has forgotten the plot of the trashy second movie.

Thanks, Cars 2. If it weren't for you, this would be a perfectly decent film trilogy.

Cars 2 is the best one. First was okay and third is trash.

10 Hotel Transylvania

This is the only non-Disney or Dreamworks (possibly Cloudy too) franchise that I actually can respect. The first one is one of my favourite movies ever, and it's thus a bit hard to not like the rest. The 2nd movie was pretty good too. Although the 3rd one brought plot holes felt a bit annoying with its cliché villain and overly dramatic animation, it was fun nevertheless.

Hotel Transylvania - Amazing
Hotel Transylvania 2 - Okay at best
Hotel Transylvania 3 - Pretty bad

The best thing about this was it's soundtrack, and that's not saying much.

I actually liked the 2nd one better than the first in my opinion...

The Newcomers

? Megamind

The first movie was a masterpiece, but the sequel Megamind Vs The Doom Syndicate was absolute rubbish and an insult to the original masterpiece.

The Contenders
11 Wreck-it Ralph

The sequel honestly proved how little Disney actually care about "Wreck-It Ralph". They only used a couple of that movie's characters to make what people would otherwise see as the blatant Tumblr pandering fest that it really is as something great.

Especially since it turned "Wreck-It Ralph" into Disney's vehicle for easy pandering.

The first movie rocked but Ralph Breaks the Internet was pure trash

This movie's sequel also ruined the Disney Princesses

12 Rio

Come on People the second movie is simply just weaker the original but not to the point of being bad but I do agree that nonetheless the first movie is definitely better.

I loved the first movie when I was younger and I was excited when I heard they were making a sequel, but when the sequel did come out, I was bored by the 10 minute mark, even at 11.

I adore the first movie, it is honestly one of the most underrated movies I have ever seen. It needs more attention, I rate it a 9/10. If you don’t like it, I totally respect your opinion. I think the second one is rubbish. - BlazingParasol

I loved the first movie. Although the 2nd movie isn't terrible, I was immensly disappointed with it

13 The Swan Princess
14 Pokemon

Hoops and the Clash of Ages was awful

15 The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The first is one of my favorites, the second one I don't even remember.

16 Mulan

The second one and live action one were so unnecessary

17 The Secret of NIMH

Secret of NIMH 2 doesn't even feel like the first Secret of NIMH. In fact, it feels just like an extremely cringy and sappy preschool show that no one over the age of 5 could possibly enjoy.

Timmy to the rescue is awful

18 Balto

The first movie was based on a true story. Which didn't exactly leave things open for a sequel.

19 Hoodwinked

The sequel was awful

20 Toy Story

With Toy Story 5 being just recently announced, the Toy Story franchise has officially become the new Ice Age.

The second was great, but 3 & 4 weren't necessary. See also: Shrek.

From the last Movie

21 Frozen

I am a big Frozen fan. I loved Frozen, Frozen Fever, Olaf's Frozen Adventure and the Lego Northern Lights series, but Frozen 2 really ruined everything I loved about the series and the characters.

I agree completely with the first comment

22 Pocahontas
23 Surf's Up
24 Tinker Bell

All tinker bell movies are trash

25 The Jungle Book
