Top Ten Best Animated Movie Sequels of the 2010s

The 2010s decade is coming to an end as of the making of this list and that's exactly why I made this list of the best animated movie sequels of the 2010s. With that being said here is the list.
The Top Ten
1 How to Train Your Dragon 2

Truly an excellent movie and one of the best animated sequels of all time. I will admit the first two times I saw it I didn't like it that much, may be due to the fact that I was nostalgia blinded to the first one, but now that I watched it a third time, it was far better and seriously underrated as well. It has an extremly good story that feels completely different from the original and the amount of emotion is unreal. The new characters were really interesting, especially the villain Drago Blodkvist and it's just a really original movie. I have not seen the third movie yet but this is truly one of the greatest movies ever made.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 is nothing short of a masterpiece. It broke the wall that many animated movies nowadays refuse to break; the on-screen murder of a beloved character. You know you barely held back tears when Stoick the Vast was given his Viking funeral. You were amazed at the scope of the battles, Toothless's bond with Hiccup grew evermore, and the re-introduction of his mother was fated to change the universe. My favorite of the bunch is The Hidden World but all three deserve recognition as being the best Dreamworks has put out. Besides Prince of Egypt.

2 Despicable Me 2

Back when it was released everyone went crazy over this movie. Nowadays I found out not many people actually like this and that it's mostly just third graders. I still love this movie though and it's definitely the best of the Despicable Me franchise. Original was awesome, Minions spin-off was decent and the third movie I originally loved the most, but the more I watch it, the more I notice its many flaws. Anyways, So when I watched it the first time, I found it a bit boring, but I have really grown to love this movie. This movie is just so hilarious at times, especially with Carl and his fire sirens, and the memorable settings, like the Mall, AVL and El Macho's lair. Although the villain isn't my type, he makes up for a quite badass battle near the end. The sorta mystery plot was done quite well as well and I really appreciate that. It's awesome.

Despicable Me 2 was decent. Then Illumination realised that they could get away with bad writing.

I prefer the original over the rest of the franchise.

I love it just about as much as I love the first one

3 Kung Fu Panda 3

Probably one of my favourite animated movies ever along with the rest of the trilogy. The first one was awesome and the sequel was just as good if not maybe just slightly worse I guess (but that's because the setting isn't that interesting). Kung Fu Panda 3 is easily the best of the trilogy though. Now sure, it might look a lot more childish than its predecessors, but once you look deeper into it youll notice how much darker it is. Sure, Kung Fu Panda 2 still holds the trophy of the darkest of the franchise, but I'd say this one's darker than the original, a lot. Kai, a spirit warrior who has escaped the spirit world, is out and seeking on stealing the power chi from everyone, by that we will make everyone his underling, possesed. Now that's sounds dark if you ask me. The story is better than in the other movies as well as Po is re-uinted with his father.

4 Toy Story 3

Even though this movie is severely overrated, I enjoyed the movie, especially the story and emotion. It's amazing to see how so long it was since the second installment was released and it seems the timeline in the movie has also gotten moved forwad a lot as well. Andy has now grown up and is going to college and the toys fear he might not want them anymore. Amazing story and concept. Unfortunately I think it's a bit overrated. The concept was amazing but the execution was less. The jokes were overall just bathroom humour and other petty crap unfortunately and I felt like a lot of the new characters were terrible and just plain annoying. Especially that Ken barby doll. In fact all new toys were ugly and looked uninteresting. Lotso had a deep backstory and was executed perfectly but his motivation is also a bit hypersensitive. So basically, awesome idea, mediocre execution. But still I enjoy this movie

Wow Toy Story has a lot of sequels.

5 Toy Story 4

This was the only movie I bothered seeing in theaters in 2019. It's my second favourite Pixar movie sequel and the second best Toy Story movie in my opinion after the second one. This was just such a great movie. A wonderful conclusion to one of the greatest animated movie franchises ever. Woody's character has grown so much since the first Toy Story movie and you can really feel it when you watch the movie. So original and the animation is stunningly impressive, especially compared to not just the other Toy Story movies, but also Incredibles 2, a pixar movie released just one year before. Lots of people think the series should've ended after 3, but if you ask me, that was just the beginning of the final adventure. This is the true conclusion and a sequel to this is highly unlikely. But this movie isn't a masterpiece in my opinion though. For one, this movie feels so short! I dunno why, but I felt like it was more or less a short movie on 30 minutes than a full-length animated pixar ...more

We waited 9 years (almost a decade) for this to be released & it's a hit in the Toy Story Franchise, though Toy Story 3 originally felt like the best chance for a finale since Andy gave away the toys before going to college. Yet Bo Peep was good in this & it's a movie we won't ever forget.

This was disappointing.

6 Finding Dory

Finding Nemo is one of the best original Pixar movies but its sequel, Finding Dory is actually in some ways better. So the first movie in the series Finding Nemo released back in 2003 was a hit and almost everyone loved it, including myself. I mean, it had great characters, a great plot, great enviroment and overall memorable moments. Dory was the best part of it. And this movie is centered around her. While she isn't as funny here, they expanded on her character a lot more here which I appreciate nevertheless. Hank the octopus is the new best character in the franchise, he is irritated but they make him quite hilarious at times. He helps Dory throughout the movie as well and has some great character development. On top of that the animation is stunningly reallistic! Even better than some more recent Pixar movies like Incredibles 2. It's because of this I actually think this movie was better than it's precedessor Finding Nemo.

This is the sequel to Finding Nemo & it's a surprise to see it being an ok movie & definitely has a story there. It focused on Dory being the main character & having adventures. I don't wanna go too deep, but this was a movie that we waited a long time for, 13 years for this! It's a surprise to see people loving it & it getting high ratings.

This is the last good Disney sequel in my opinion.

7 Incredibles 2

You know fun story. Originally I did not like the original. So I had low expectations for this movie. But I loved it. Then I rewatched the original. And I loved it. Yeah. So now I think this movie isn't nearly as good as the original which might be one of the best Pixar movies of all time. But it's still amazing in my opinion. It's not as memorable or charming as the original but it was creepier than the original definitely with the very awesome villain known as Screeenslaver. Screenslaver is a twist villain, unfortunately but she's done quite well in my opinion. Her motivations are understandable and she's creepy as heck to be fair. And to be honest, the story is awesome as well. I really liked seeing all these new superheroes and it was quite nice. Overall it's an awesome movie. or like my old spelling "awesomne".

This was a big movie in the Summer of 2018 & it was a relative breath of fresh air for sequels. It had action & a good storyline & 13 years after the original movie, they made a quite excellent hit. Pixar’s done it again.

8 How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
9 Kung Fu Panda 2
10 Frozen 2

After years almost half the world has been waiting for this

This will probably suck.

This should be number 1

The Contenders
11 My Little Pony: Equestria Girls - Friendship Games
12 Cars 2

Everyone hates this movei but..., yeah, I don't. I don't care that the movie isn't all centered on racing. In my opinion that's what made the original relatively boring. This is a mix between racing and mystery, which is great. A lot of the new cars, especially the villians, while relatively bland, look awesome and I especially like how the movie is way more action-packed and exciting than the original which had a much less chaotic tone. You get it where this is going, I really like this sequel.

13 My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Rainbow Rocks
14 The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
15 Batman vs. Two-Face
16 Ice Age: Continental Drift

You know a lot of people don't really talk about the Ice Age movies anymore since the fifth installment flopped at the box office. It might also be due to that this movie is made by Blue Sky Studios whom are quite irrelevant. Out of the five Ice Age movies though, this one, the fourth one is easly the most memorable one of the bunch. The story and pirate setting is very interesting and as a child I remembered this movie a lot more clear than the rest. I also really like the character of Shira. Now this is the second-most hated movie of the franchise though. I can understand in some ways why people may hate this movie, such as Nicki Minaj and Peaches and her mammoth friends being absolute horrible and "cool", but at least it was relatively minor. And yes those lemmings were quite irritating as well and just made you want to procced with the story but the pros outweight the cons. Captain Gutt was quite a good villain, the story was a bit similar to the second movie but it was generally ...more

17 Batman vs. Robin
18 Cars 3

Better than Cars 2

19 Batman: Bad Blood
20 The Angry Birds Movie 2
21 Isle of Dogs
22 Shrek Forever After
23 Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation

This was one of the only movies of 2018 I actually bothered seeing, as I am a huge fan of the hotel transylvania trilogy. I'm not going to be too obsessive, but the first one was my favourite animated movie of all time as it brings back so much nostalgia from early 2013 when I had a fever, and the sequel was alright but disappointing due to the high expectations I had for it. But it was good too. This one's better than the second installment and is very colourful, and I thought the villians were quite good. I have always loved cruise shops and ferries as well as someone who regularly uses them to get to the other side of the baltic sea. Although this movies does still have flaws. Johnny for example has been downgraded so much. He was my favourite character in the original, in the second movie they made him quite annoying and here he is unbearably dumb. There are also some things that just plain irritate me like that song at the end and the zing thing has now become a plot-hole but ...more
