Best Animated Movie Sequels Not by Disney or DreamworksWe all talk about how great Disney and Dreamworks make sequels to movies, but not many talk about animated movie sequels made my other companies to other franchises. Which..., is understandable since most of them suck, but that doesn't mean there have been good sequels from other companies. So with that being said here is the list.
The Top Ten
Oh boy, Ice Age is certainly not a franchise without the opinions of people. Being the largest theatrical computer animated movie franchise of all time, with five installments and some specials, people sure like to talk crap about it, and how it started out great, and degraded for each installment. Well, but as someone who always disliked the original movie, I do tend to prefer its sequels, as they have a different focus from the original. The first sequel was pretty great, but most of us can agree the threequel was the absolute best of the bunch, Dawn of the Dinosaurs. First off, it's about dinosaurs. Who doesn't love dinosaurs? Even if it's pretty random to have an ICE AGE movie about dinosaurs, I think it's decently incorporated in the movie (and it makes even more sense after watching the fifth movie). It also introduced the clearly best character this franchise ever spawned, Buckminister, a brittish weasel who lives in the dinosaur caves, always in a fight with his nemesis but ...more
So Despicable Me 2, the lesser hated of the two DM sequels. In fact it was quite loved when it first was released into theaters, but now it's been kind of popular to hate anything from Illumination that isn't the first movie. From my point of view, it's an overall better movie than the original, although it's steeper in quality when it comes to inside of the film, but not as much as the third movie. The main plot is yet again pretty great, as it has a kind of mystery theme to it. The minions are the main center, as the villain of the story is turning them into purple minions (vicious predators) to rule the world, even though the villain's plan is absolutely stupid because he had to be super precicely lucky for his concept to actually work The main flaws of the movie however are the sub-plots yet again. Margo falls in love with some edgy boi and Gru is forced into a date with some fricker and it's all a pain to watch. But the main plot is good enough to overshadow the negatives.
I gotta say Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is one of the better animated movie franchises out there that aren't from Disney or Dreamworks, with its solid storylines, messages and overall comedy. The original was released in 2009, being acclaimed as one of the best Sony Animated movies, a company most often known for making cash grab movies, but with some few stand outs here and there. Then it recieved a sequel in 2013, which most people didn't like, but which I think honestly is pretty great. Both the original and the sequel are quite excellent, movies, even if the sequel does slightly rehash on the original, but with some twists. More of Flint Lockwood's backstory was slightly revealed, giving us a glimpse of why he wanted to become a world-famous inventor, due to his idol Chester V. He helps Flint to defeat the FLDSMFR, the machine Flint created in the original originally for good intent, but he began losing control and as a result he had to destroy it. In this movie, it's ...more
this movie was just ok to me, I really like the first one, the man in the orange suite annoyed me.
The only Ice Age films I really "love" would be the threequel and one with pirates. The latter is of course, Ice Age 4: Continental Drift. Whereas the third movie is often praised as the best sequel and sometimes best Ice Age film, the fourth film is usually seen as the worst, only beating the fifth installment. But I actually think the fourth movie is quite great, and one of the best. Originally I liked this over 3, but I've grown to see the many flaws that do in-habit this film, which brings this one down a little. But I think the overall concept and plot is pretty neat. I like pirates for example. Maybe not as much as dinosaurs, but they're cool. And as this movie has pirates as villians, I thought it was pretty fun. Although there are some flaws I sure do have with this movie, which is the teenager plot. Peaches from the 3rd movie is now a teenager, and we all know much drama movies about teenager suck, and that takes up a good chunk of the film. It's not so big that the entire ...more
I liked this movie to and I think it’s to overrated :/
I feel this is the Ice Age movie that people talk and know least about. It's probably because it isn't as "iconic to some" as the original, or jumped the shark as much as the rest of the sequels, as this movie progresses the original most naturally. It's also the movie I watch first whenever I rewatch the series because you all already know I hate the original film. In my opinion, it's quite great. Not amazing, but it's pretty fun. The Ice Age is said to be coming to an end and the whole world will get drowned (obviously it won't in the end anyways but still). Manny also meets Ellie and they get together, and I somewhat like their chemistry. The thing I've always liked though are the villians. They're not necessarily significant or important to the movie, but I just like their overall designs, predatory fish who have been stuck inside of ice for millions of years an now with the ice melting they are back. However, one thing I depsise with this film, is Crash and Eddie, two "comic ...more
The Despicable Me franchise is infamous for spawning the Minions, a bunch who has been giving teenagers and adults nightmares since the release of their spin-off movie. Off-topic, but the Despicable Me series isn't known for being the most quality and I can see why. The first movie is the only one that's pretty good all the way through, with a fine plot, good characters and focus. Then there's the two sequels, who in contrast to the original which was just "good" all the way through, the successors are more mixed. On one hand they have amazing bits, but at other times, there are stuff that absolutely downgrades the movie. I do believe I like the sequels more for those amazing bits, but it's personal. I think 3 is the overall best of these movies, but ironically it also has the steepest cliffs between good and bad stuff put into it. On one hand you have the absolutely amazing main plot and antagonist, who actually has a some development and an actual backstory. And the main plot is ...more
It's not often a Sony movie of all kinds to turn out pretty deep and actually follow up on the original quite well, feeling as if our characters are growing older. With my love for the original, I did have a little too high expectations for this one, which did leave a dissapointment for me when I walked out of the theaters, but looking back, it still is a decent movie. One thing this movie does good is not rehashing the original. As for plot, the Hotel Transylvania has now opened up to accept humans into the hotel as well, after Dracula realized humans aren't vicious murderers anymore, and his daughter who's together with a human turns out to be pregnant. Dracula wants his grandson to become a vampire, whereas his daughter doesn't care wether she becomes one or not. Asa result before Dennis 5th birthday, Dracula goes to a vampire camp where young vampires train to become vampires (in hope that Dennis will grow his vampire fangs), whereas Mavis and Johnny go on a small trip to ...more
I think this one was better thin the first one, the little boy was so cute. but mav annoyed me.
Let me get this straight, Hotel Transylvania is one of my favourite animated movies of all time. It has some crappy jokes sure, and it occasionally tries to be hip and cool for kids, but all in all, it was a meaningful and powerful movie, with a message that didn't feel too forced, likeable characters, and really vivid and memorable moments, such as the dinner room chase, or airplane scene. And then this movie became the spawn of many sequels. In fact, Hotel Transylvania is as of today the largest threatrical franchise from Sony Animation. But how good do the sequels hold up? Well I'll be happy to tell you that it's not a bunch of meaningless crap and random plots like the Ice Age franchise, but it continued with messages of acceptance and overall being fun. The first sequel had a similar message to the original, although it felt much more forced and less likeable. The second sequel took on another message similarly, but instead of being forced, it felt flat. Oh well, as for the movie ...more
This movie is certainly infamous for having the franchise jump completely off the shark, as if three didn't do it enough. As they say, the further you go, in the end you end up in space, and that is certainly true to this franchise. I was actually anticipating this movie, because the asteroid plot I felt could add some tension to the overall movie, but I was quite wrong. Two is still the most intense of the franchise, followed by four. What made this movie though such a disappointment is how nothing in the movie makes sense and most bits of screentime are unfunny at best. I mean Three was kinda random with the dinosaur theme too but it was executed much better nevertheless, plus who doesn't like dinosaurs? What's in this movie? bathroom humour, Buck supposedly transfering information to Crash/Eddie by just touching them, and the villain's plan being just absolutely retarded. Like I'm not even joking, they want the asteroid to hit the Earth so that they can live in a supposed paradise, ...more
Here comes one of my more popular opinions when it comes to movies, which is my thoughts on the Rio duology by Blue Sky Studios. This is the only franchise from this studio besides Ice Age to contain a sequel, quite surprisingly. Well, the original really was a great movie, not gonna lie. It wasn't amazing, true but it was a charming and fun movie, and a childhood film of mine. However, the sequel was not nearly as great, depsite the fact it's set in the rainforest, a setting I absolutely adore for fiction. Well I will say it's also what lead to me not entirely despising the movie though, alongside some other things. It has a sense of tension, with much more evil villians than the original, and the main villain from the original also returns, just as good. But everything else is just..., bleh. The songs are horrible, the plot is mean-spirited and cliché in one go, and just about everything else is cliché. Of course Blu and Jewel have kids. Of course they're not the last of their ...more
