Top Ten Anime Characters With the Worst ChildhoodDanoMR98 Animes tend to give characters bad childhoods, who got it the worst
The Top Ten
Gaara has the worst childhood ever. I mean everyone look at him like he was a monster. While Naruto grew up with friends on the way. Gaara stay lonely and felt that nobody love him. And he had to love himself! That's sad. Also he was crying when he found out that his mom loved him.. Wow just wow :(
Attempted suicide many times, grew up having himself and others, had no friends, his dad hated him and tried to kill him, and his mom died with her last words being "I never loved you". The only one who cared for him was his uncle, who was faking him. Jesus, Gaara. Don't worry. We love you
He had a beast stored in his body. He felt like nobody cared for him except for the one family member who tried to kill him. - DanoMR98
Itachi should be number 1V 14 Comments
Dude, he grew up being hated for something he couldn't help. Growing up, he had no parents, no friends, no love, nothing. He grew being the dead last, and everyone hating him. Yet, despite being hated, he loved that damn village to the point that he wanted to work his way to the top to protect it. I mean, sure, he grew up with friends as he got older, but for the most part he had nothing. Skipping class with Choji, Shikamaru, and Kiba doesn't mean he had friends, especially when their own parents made them stop playing with Naruto. I get that Gaara has had a childhood exactly like this, but he always knew he was a jinchuuriki. Even though he was betrayed by his uncle, that doesn't mean he had to make that choice. But he had the choice to open up. He was the kazekage's son! Practically royalty. He also had family! In MY opinion, Naruto had it much worse.
Naruto grew up in a village who shunned him into darkness. Everybody hated him and some people even harmed him who believed Naruto was the Nine Tails. He had no love, no friends, not even a bit of happiness. He still loved the village at the bottom of his heart. He never got to play with anyone much because their parents refused them to do so. Naruto was even called demon or monster when it slipped out of the villagers's mouths. He grew up as dead last and was made fun of. Naruto was called failure...failure...Do you know how hard it is to be called a failure, monster, demon, Kyuubi brat, and to see other children happy with their parents when your an orphan? :( I think we can all say "We love you Naru-chan" He worked hard everyday. He was rejected by the girl he loved so many times. And in the end he became an awesome Hokage that we think changed things greatly. Listen here to let me say a quote I created: To be loved is the best thing...Ramen is the next...
I like naruto as a character but his childhood is not that sad compared to others on this list, whom got tortured at infancy, whom seen others get massacred, and whom lost their whole village. - wren6
Oml I totally agree with you!V 5 Comments
The whole thing with reviving their mother and ruining themselves makes for a pretty bad childhood. - DanoMR98
I don't know how they remain so optimistic even after their childhood. They lost their childhood untimely..
Lost their childhood and these strong willed brothers have the greatest family bond out of any anime
This probably makes me sound like a horrible person (lol), but one of the reason their tragic backstory is so GOOD (in a bad way? I don't know) is because it wasn't 'fated to be' or anything. THEY put it upon themselves, and I love Hiromu Arakawa for that. Something original amongst all the 'sorry you're parents got killed because you're special' stuff out there.V 7 Comments
I mean a young child who witnessed his own parents being burned to death right before his eyes and not even knowing who had done it and then being turned into a slave while later on in his life his aunt is also killed before his eyes as well is honestly something I couldn't live through for a slim moment so I think that Ciel Phantomhive absolutely has to have the worst childhood and In my opinion, 3rd place seems to be a good place for him in this top ten list.
The fact that his parents died, his mansion burned down, and he ended up a slave were bad enough, but the fact that his aunt died, and all the messed-up happenings with Ash/Angela were simply crazy. Not to mention he is running a company and working for the Queen at age 13 after all this!
His house burned down, his parents died, he got sold into slavery, then sold his soul to a demon. Why isn't he on this list?
[SPOILER HEAVY COMMENT)
Ciel, who we will call OC, and his twin brother, RC, had a fairly nice childhood up until their 10th birthday. An unknown perpetrator killed off everyone in their manor, which is enough trauma already, and then kidnapped the young boys. They were terrified and sold off to someone, who then brought them to an area where they were raped and defiled. AT 10. For the next month or so, they lived in hell until OC saw his brother, the only person he could still love in this new hell, murdered before his eyes. It's the whole reason the events of Black butler unfold. OCiel wants to get revenge.
From the bleak worldview Berserk gives us, Guts shouldn't even have been born. That goes against anything the Godhand, who supposedly governs the laws of causality would want, since he opposes their will. He was born from his mother's hanging corpse, raised by a mercenary band and only knew the way of the sword what with all the deaths surrounding him. In fact, death and destruction is basically all this poor guy knows.
He lost his foster mother (the only character of his childhood to lovingly care for him) to an illness. For a couple of coins he was unknowingly sold by his foster father, Gambino - the leader of the mercenaries, to a man named Donovan, to have his way with him when Guts was still just a kid.
Gambino only admitted this grim truth when he was going to kill Guts because he had hated him ever since they found him. Seeing him as a bad omen and the cause for all the strokes of bad luck the band had experienced as of recent. Guts was forced to kill Gambino in ...more
Gaara and the Elrics may have had it tough, but they lived like noblemen compared to Guts.
Born from a corpse. Raised by mercenaries. Lost his adoptive mother due to plague. Started fighting at six. Sold as a sex slave for one night. Developed an aversion to touch and fever dreams. Killed his father in self defense. All this and much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much more later on built him into the SCARIEST MOTHER DEMON SLAYER EVER!
Guts... Had a hard life ;_;

Erza Scarlet had a really sad childhood in my opinion. She went through slavery, when she was what age? 7? 6? 8? They built the Tower of Heaven all because they wanted to resurrect Zeref. It was so sad. And one of her closest friends got possessed and became evil. What sadness, to me it was tragic. I've never seen childhood depressing! - Asuna_Yuuki
Definitely erza over any anime character I've seen. and why is vegeta on this list, he is my favorite dbz character but how did he have a bad childhood? He was the prince of a planet?
Would you like to never see society or never have a family? That is Ezra's childhood, she had to work for most of her childhood and was whipped, stabbed in the eye, slapped, and treated like dirt!
Erza is on every top ten listV 9 Comments
Robert Haydn had such a sad childhood.
He was hated by everyone just because he was a celestial.
His friends betrayed him.
His carer lied about taking care of him just so he could get the money.
He was locked up, became mentally unstable and destroyed his town at the age of 5. No wonder Robert became bad...
Robin had quite a disastrous childhood. Even before she became one of the world's most hated fugitive, her life was already quite tragic. Her mother chose her profession over caring for her, leaving Robin in the care of an abusive aunt who treated her like nothing short of a slave.
The other people in her village treated her like a monster for her devil fruit powers. They called her names and threw rocks at her just because she was different. She was practically the dictionary definition of an outcast as even with the archaeologists who liked her, she was to remain outside.
After six years, her mother finally returned. Even when her mother abandoned Robin, she loved her and wanted nothing more than to just hold her hand and stay together, but even that was impossible because again her mother would rather die with her job than stay with Robin. They held hands once, hugged once before they were separated from each other permanently. And even at that point, her witch of a ...more
Robin grew up doing her aunt and uncles chores, being hated on by children and their parents, 's basically being the outcast of society. After she finally establishes some new friends, her island is attacked. At the age of eight, she meets her mother finally. THEN EVERYONE SHE HAS EVER KNOWN DIES. She manages to escape the island, and lives 20 years being hated by everyone she meet, and being chased by the government.
She lived as an outlaw since she was like, 10 years old. She's been running away from the world for years. On top of that the aunt that raised her hated her and was abusive. Not to mention her homeland being destroyed in front of her when she was 10, leaving the island only hours after reuniting with her mother who left when she was two. - DanoMR98

Her parents died in a plane crash. That's all I have to say. - Croy987
He had a drunk and abusive father then when he finally find happiness with Nagisa she is ripped away from him. Then when his daughter becomes a ray of sunshine to him she is also ripped away from him. How sad is that?
Having your blood replaced with black blood... And he was always in pain, the poor child didn't even deserve this, and when he didn't do what she wanted, she looked him up. It was cruel, terrible, horrible! No wonder he doesn't know how to do many things without out! Who wouldn't fear things with the sort of childhood he had!? - SoulDeathTheKidMaka414
All those things Medusa did to him completely traumatized him. He devolved this fear inside his mind that turned him to insanity. When Maka saw his soul it was all messed up inside... - seerOfmind
His mother forced him to kill dragons and gave him black blood as a child. He grew up never knowing how to deal with anything. - DanoMR98
You’ll feel even worse for her/him in the manga.V 4 Comments
While he was force to be a child soldier, Goku was being a dumb ass in the forest.
Child soldier force to work for FRIEZA. Let that sink and then tell me that isn't a horrible childhood.
His entire home planet..most of his race..just destroyed by Freeza. Forced to work for that same guy for most of his life. That does sound sad. Amazes me how Vegeta just doesn't give a damn. He's that badass to just shrug it off. :D
At age 5 his planet was destroyed then he had to be a (possibly sex)slave for the destroyer for 25 years
His backstory is simple but awful
Before she became hell girl, she was just an innocent girl being looked down on by other villagers. It all started when she held a butterfly some people believed was dead but really it wasn't moving and when it flew off, people saw it as a curse. She was sacrificed to the gods, then betrayed by her cousin, who liked her still. She began to hate everyone as she died which lead to her ultimate sentence of ferrying people to hell. - ItsDaWorldOfSNuGGLEZ
She burried alive by her parents and loved ones at age 7. and then doomed forever to be the guardian of hell. worst one I guess
Gray has had a stressful childhood. So has Natsu. I'm surprised he isn't on the list. - FennikenFan9
I agree... Gray's was really bad.
I really feel bad for Gray.
It absolutely deserves a higher place at this list! His past is mostly told at Galuna arc but if you watch Tartaros arc too, you'll feel more upset about his past. Try to imagine that you're staring at your parents' corpses while you were 7 or 8.V 3 Comments
Imagine being killed by your own father and being fused with your pet dog to become a chimera for his own selfish gain...Yep.
She was fused with her dog by her dad, so her dad would keep their job
He should be lower on the list, I’m a fan of Gray, but it wasn’t that bad especially conpared to the charectors lower on the list.
In all honesty, I believe Lucy from Elfen Lied had the worst childhood imaginable. Abandoned by her parents, treated horribly by everyone at the orphanage (not to mention that Tomoo), her only friend at the orphanage was murdered by the children (who she later killed), and couldn't find acceptance from anybody except Kouta.
Lucy became a killer because of how badly she was treated, isn't that right?
I'm amazed Lucy is so far down on the list. She DEFINITELY had the worst past imaginable.
She had nowhere to go and no one to call a family, since the so called organisation in the manga even wanted her to get raped/pregnant by her own brother, she killed her brother to end his suffering. (Manga )
She got PTSD with all the trauma furthermore even creating a double personality to escape reality.
even having self hatred as a child to adulthood.
I honestly feel sorry for Lucy, people call her a yandere or psychopath without even knowing that she didn't kill for possession, lust nor excitement.
Rumiko Takahashi could've at least told us about how many brothers does Rin have on her own so far back then before in the first place but no instead she just had to displease us. She could've told us if Rin's brothers are older or younger, what are the official, real names of Rin's brothers and Rin's parents back then before in the first place as well but no instead she just had to leave it unknown. That fool Rumiko Takahashi just had to displease us.
I cried over this girl. When she was first introduced, she was alone and straving but yet she hunt for scraps of food to give to Sesshomaru. And then the wolves showed up...god. She's so precious!
Both her parents were murdered by human traffickers right in front of her when she was a little kid, then they kidnapped her. Sure, Eren Yeager came and rescued her, and his family took her in. But still, having both your parents killed in front of you, then being kidnapped? If that isn't a terrible childhood, I don't know what is.
Watched both parents die bloody deaths, as she was almost sold to human traffickers. On top of all that, her adoptive mother was eaten by a Titan. Eren is the only family she has left. Her childhood was DARK - Haumea
She watched her biological parents get killed, plus her adoptive mom get eaten. That has to be a terrible childhood. - 906389
Why is Eren above her!? She saw her two families die! Her biological family and adopted family!
Kakashi had one of the worst childhoods ever. He grew up without his mother, his dad committed sucide because he couldn't deal with the hate he was getting, and that only for a tiny mistake, witch honestly is not even a mistake. Then after losing his dad, like it wasn't enough, he lost his friend, his friend Obito basically died for him and then gave him his eye ( not actually died but Kakashi only found out he is still alive like 15 years after ). And well, that's not all, Rin, a good friend of Kakashi, the girl that loved him, had to jump in front of one of Kakashi 's attack (Chidori) and be killed by Kakashi himself, in order to protect the village. Kakashi blamed himself for Rin's death so much and he just couldn't move on, because he promised Obito he will protect her, and failed. Then, still there were people he loved left to die... so his sensei died too. He sacrificed himself for the village. And Kakashi just couldn't make any bonds anymore, because he couldn't handle the pain ...more
Kakashi is the only character whose childhood made me cry. I did tear up at Naruto's and the other characters', but honestly? His dad committed suicide, he was a chuunin at 6 and his teammate died (or he thought he had died) because of his insistence on following the rules (which was because of his father). I cried when Obito gave him his eye as a "promotion present", and the fact that he went to the memoriam every day after that speaks for itself.
Sasuke was already suffering BEFORE the massacre. He felt neglected by his father who always praised Itachi, always telling him to be like him. To be told by your own father to not be yourself is harsh. Everyone praised Itachi and sometimes gets compared with him, he was always in his shadow. Even if he tried his best and was on top of his class.NOT ONLY THAT but he truly loved Itachi and never got to play with him once he became anbu, always receiving a poke on the head, hearing the same things every time. Own brother lying to him. That's not really pleasant, well at least he had some comfort from his mom. Then right after he figured out that his father did love him and talked about him, he just had to get murdered right after. His clan was murdered, right in front of his eyes- by his own brother, who was the closest person to him (I think). His idol, own brother, tortured him with his eyes. He had to switch to loving him, to hating him, leading to revenge. Well even after the ...more
I don't understand because yes he did face a horrible childhood but Naruto was never accepted. Sasuke didn't appreciate his fans, the villagers, and one who praised him as a prodigy and Uchiha. Naruto should be right after Gaara because in his childhood he was never accepted, made fun of, called devilish names like demon or monster, bullied, and recieving all those menacing glares... And Naruto fans... YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. Naruto didn't hate but solved it. To people who think he is annoying, he only started playing pranks, yelling things out, and wearing bright orange is because he wanted to be acknowledged and noticed by everyone most especially Sasuke
Can't believe Naruto, Kakashi, Obito, Madara, Nagato are not in top ten like seriously what. Naruto not in top ten and what about Itachi. Let me quote Nagato/Pain, and I quote "Someone who doesn't understand pain will never understand peace". Its true this world doesn't know pain, the guys who have an awesome life don't have any right to talk crap about the less priviliged. What would they know about being lied to your whole life and watching your parents get murdered in front of you by your own brother and finding out the truth after killing your brother.
His story is by far one of the saddest, and the childhood scenes add a lot to the story. It's more sad later in the story.V 9 Comments
Trunks was raised in destruction. He's never know a moment of peace until he had to travel back in time to destroy the Androids in the past to save his future. That's one of the saddest thing I've seen in anime.
Not gonna lie. I teared up when he thought of what his future would be like if Black never showed up, like him, Bulma, and Mai together.
Most tragic character in dragon ball
Hé was born in a world of pain living his life in fear
She had a terrible experience as as child she never got over witch makes her do what she does in the anime it makes you sympathetic to words her and understanding of her character
Seriously why is this not in Top ten she had a VERY sad storyV 1 Comment
She was enslaved as a child in order to save her village and has been treated like crap by her en-slavers. She should definitely be higher on this list.
Yeah, that sucked.
When he was a child he was forced to murder the thugs that killed Mikasa's parents and as he got older, his town was destroyed and he witnessed his mother being eaten by a titan!
His mother got ate by a titan in front of him... If that isn't a crappy child hood I don't know what is.. although I am surprised Mikasa wasn't on this list...
His childhood wasnt that bad.Mikasa had it worst
How is he not in the top 10? He saw his own mother get hit by a truck and die right infront of his eyes. - ItsDaWorldOfSNuGGLEZ
He's not on the top ten because he didn't try resurrecting his mother only to have his leg torn off, his brother vaporized, his mother's remains look like The Evil Dead 2.
He also wasn't raped/butchered/abandoned/beaten/corrupted/outcasted/slapped/shinjied/Lucyed/Gutsed or made to watch every one he knows get hit by that truck.
Trust me, it's a horrible thing, but by jove there is somehow worse.
His mother got assassinated in front of him and his sister disabled. And his father didn't even care. His father abandoned him and her disable sister and made them political hostage.
His mother got killed and his sister got disabled. He had to kill his brother so things could go right again.
Should be way higher
His mother was assassinated and his father didn't care. Not quite as bad as the Elric Brothers because they lost their bodies but should be higher on the list.
I thought starving on a rock for weeks was bad. But what happened before with his so-called family is ten times more horrible. What kind of father locks their child with an iron mask to forget his existence and he is ashamed of him for being an ordinary human being? What kind of brothers bully and beat their brother for cooking and laugh about different ways he could have died? That's just aweful!
Bullied, beaten and mocked by his brothers, rejected and insulted by his father, only his mother cared for him but she died when he was a child. Then he got put in a cell with an iron mask because his father wanted to forget he existed. Finally escaped (after his dad said he wanted him to die and that he was ashamed of him) and then the ship sank and he was left to starve on a rock for WEEKS. Damn that sucks. Luckily he met Zeff who turned out to be a great father figure for him...
He lost his dad when he was too little to remember him, his mom worked most of the time to support him and his leeching aunt (who always said she was struggling financially when all she really wanted was more money) which led her to die from overwork when he was ten, his aunt took him in afterwards only to be mean and always compare him to his late mother (not in a good way), and always complain about his good grades compared to her (his aunt's) own son.
Thank goodness he had Hide as his friend.
His father died when he was very little, his mother neglected him and abused him, his aunt became his foster parent and heavily neglected him, he went on a date with a girl only to get thrown into a near-death experience, forced to become a monster who eats humans, gets kidnapped mutiple times, gets tortured to the point his hair goes white, goes absolutely crazy, cannibalizes ghouls, kills people for the hell of it, gets captured by investigators, gets so messed up he GETS A MULTIPLE PERSONALITY (haise saski), gets random flashbacks about his old self, gets so messed up he gives up and goes back to his old self, throughout the entirety of his life he's repeated 'it's better to be hurt than to hurt others'.
Tokyo ghoul is saddest anime I have ever seen and it's my number 1 anime
HIGHER UP ON THE LIST THANK U VERY MUCH!V 5 Comments
His story isn't that bad
He was burnt by his own mother because she didn't like that shoto had his fathers flames and her ice
and on top of that he hates his father and never wants to be a pro hero like him oh and his mother is in hospital for some unknown reason wow and I thought midoria had it worse you know without the quirk and all sad time for just junior high kids
I agree that Lucy did have a horrible childhood. I mean everything in the house was lively but after her mother died the house became silent and her father was treating her badly. But at least she has friends now.
After her mother died she grew up in a big lonely house with a father who neglected her. She had a lonely childhood until she finally ran away
She was all alone when her mother died and then her father never payed attention to her that's just horrible
Her story is kinda boringV 2 Comments
Her parents were abusing and even after her brother saved her she got bullied at school. Then her only family that is her brother dies and she carried his body to the clinic. Even after these traumatizing events she's keeps on smiling
His best friend died in front of him after giving he received his best friends eye. After his clan found out that his friend went missing they accused him because he was the last one to see him. Later he was asked to slaughter his clan because it would help prevent a war from occurring. He almost had no choice but to kill the people he knew: friends, neighbors, even his own parents. He couldn't kill his lil bro and was forced to tell him to avenge the clan and kill him just so the lil bro had a reason to live. The moment he told his lil bro that, he had to leave him not even knowing how he was going to grow up, his lil bro was one of the two things he had left in his life. After years he saw his lil bro and was forced to beat up the very person he loved and torture him with genjutsu. But in the end, he was able to show that he loved his lil bro.
Why isn't Alois at least higher than Ciel? Ciel was molested, parents dead, house burned down, branded for some sex market but sold his soul to the devil to get revenge on the people who humiliated him. Really humiliated? But Alois doesn't even know his parents were. Molested, hated, discared like trash in a crapy village whilst Ciel lived with love and parents around him. Alois brother died in his arm when Alois wanted to get revenge on the village who treated him and his little brother like trash. Even a demon felt sorry for Alois's being! Molested by an old man, used as a sex toy. And in the end, he only sold his soul to a demon because for once in his life he wanted to feel love. I pity Alois way more than Ciel and he should definitely be higher up.
I completely agree. The poor kid went through enough, and managed to come out alive, even if disturbed. He shows several signs of borderline personality disorder. And after all of this, he couldn't even get buy the loyalty of a demon with his life. He went abandoned, abused, and unloved for a significant portion of his life, even if he was a little, he didn't deserve the fate he received.
He has bad past as well. Nobody knows of Alois Trancy parents as they seemed to disappear when he was younger. He and his younger brother was ignored and treated badly by the villagers. He ends up losing his brother at younger age and being molested and sexually abused by an old ugly man. That's tough.
His parents abandoned him and his little brother, causing them to grow up in poverty being mistreated by the vilagers. He then had to have his little brother die in his arms with him not knowing who,how and why.He then was taken in by a rich old aristocrat who was into young boys and who often molested and raped, having to develop a promiscuous behaviour and slowly having his sanity slip.He was introduced to the aristocrats as the long lost son of the one who abused him and he only ever wanted to see and experience how it was to be loved, that being the reason why to summon a demon. He was eventually betrayed by that demon, the only one he though he could trust as well as the only one he thought loved him.V 6 Comments
He's been bullied, his dad left him, he was quirkless, no friends
He had to watch his entire town succumb to a poison nobody could cure, got quarantined and burned to the ground. His mother and father were murdered right in front of his eyes and sister burned at the stake. He then goes to find all his friends were shot dead in the streets along with his teacher who told him a merciful helping hand will always reach out to you. He had to hide under all the corpses of his family and friends to escape the quarantine. If that isn't number one I don't know what is. It's more depressing if you watch it yourself, one piece episode 701 Sad memories; law the boy from white town.
It's weird to see Law being so low on this list and Gaara at the top because Law didn't only lose his whole family, his friends and well, his entire hometown, he also was treated like a monster, like a thing, and later lost the only person who treated him like a human, tried to find a cure for his seemingly incurable illness and genuinely loved him. Let's not forget that he was aware that he didn't have much time left and would die soon and he just accepted that… The most heartbreaking fact is that he couldn't do anything and had to witness everybody die helplessly. While it's sad that Gaara was exposed to so much loneliness and hatred, Law's case is much worse to be honest…
The fudge why is he down here! I daresay that his past would go neck in neck with Nico Robin's childhood.
Born into a utopia. His town is plagued by a disease that is a bi-product of their source of richery. Law has the disease, 's is not expected to live to adulthod. To stop the disease from "spreading" (which it can't, unless you consume the poison), the government starts to kill everyone in his home town. They promised the nuns and children sanctuary, but law couldn't go with them, because he had to find his sister. He went to the hospital that his parents owned, to find them dead, laying on the ground. He finds his sister an hide her and then runs away so that the soldiers will chase after him and not find his sister. The hospitals burned down, (with her likely still inside)and as he was running away, he saw the nuns and children all shot by the soldiers. He managed to escape by hiding under a pile of corpses.
He joined a gang and befriended a man name Corazan. Corazan betrayed the gang and the government (he was a spy), so that he could find a cure for Law. Corazan ...more
He had a disastrous childhood and now he's having a horrible adulthood as well. He needs to be in top ten. - Goku02
I cannot believe this hasn't been put up yet. His whole family hated him for his lack of talent because his sister was a genius and the breadwinner of the family. She then died in a bus accident that made Yuuji's father turn into an alcoholic and constantly abuse Yuuji and his mother. It got to the point where Yuuji had to kill his own father when he was just a kid to stop his father from raping his mother and beating them. Yuuji's mother also committed suicide on that same night.
Growing up being disrespected by his father- and assaulted too- because he wasn't talented like her sister- who was incestual! He was used in a terrorist group whose leader was his dad's friend. When his sister "died", his father became a drunk scumbag who abused his mother and hit him every time. Then, when his father died and his mother committed suicide ( and seeing the body hanging up ), he got "rescued" by his father's friend, Heath Oslo, who was WORSE than his father. He used him in the terrorist group, spanking him and molesting him. Well, yeah, in terms of childhood, this guy takes the cake.
Grown as a child soldier, the only one who loved him was his sister. She died in a bus accident, then his dad started to drink alcohol and beat him to later escape with her mother. Finally he killed his father and his mother killed herself. He grown thinking that he is the cause that his parents die. He was reclouted as a terrorist, while in the camp he meet a girl that cares about him but we got killed because they said that he need to do it. He got molested and dressed as a girl because she looked like his sister.
This should be a lot higherV 2 Comments
He's very caring deep inside. But because of everything's happened to him, he's the man he is now. Tough and all coming from his childhood. But still, it's not right to say he is heartless because that's not true.
He was malnourished as a child and lived part of his life underground as a thug.
If you've read the manga and watched the ova, you would know that his upbringing was anything but perfect. His overall life story actually makes me cry.
Because he's Levi.
AKA: The queen of winged tipped eyeliner.
This may not be the saddest childhood ever, but it was just so hard on him! I mean, first his (SPOILER) brother, Natsu Dragneel, died very young, leading him to extensive studying on life and death magic. Then he ends up killing his entire school by accident, becoming immortal. He is left to roam Earthland alone and killing anyone whom he meets.
Should be top 10. Waaay messed up. Cursed by having to NOT care about human lives to control magic that kills or else. Then when he falls in love with someone who has that similar curse of being immortal he kills her. Also it makes him bipolar as hell
Zeref and Jellal have the worst childhoods in Fairy Tail. - Goku02
A female ghoul kidnapped him, raised him to kill a bunch of people to be served for eating and was constantly abused, made fun of, and forced to put on dresses. Did I forget to mention that that his owner castrated him (smashed his genitals) so that he could "be a girl forever", no matter he's such a psycho.
How is he not higher?!
Really sad story
He was raised to kill people, he was castrated () and then his mentor si in comatose state
Sorry for bad English it isn't my first language
Why Luffy, where the hell is Nami on this list.
Luffy had an adoptive family, he had Ace and Sabo as big brothers, the villagers cared for him. It wasn't bad at all.
This guy may have been happy, but he had to grow up not knowing he even had parents, and had to grow up being trained-TORTURED by Garp being chased by wild animals, I don't remember a moment in his childhood where he didn't have bandages. He grew up with mountain bandits and had to face almost dying in a fire, being tortured by pirates, and fighting Bluejam. Then when the Tenryubuito blows Sabo's boat up, he had to grow up honking he was dead. And two years before the current story timeline, before the timeskip, he had to see his Nakama vanishing right before his eyes, and soon discovers Ace was gonna be executed, he went to Impel Down to save him, almost died by Magellan's Poision, went through a painful treatment that took ten years of his lifespan, went to Marineford to save him, only for Ace to die saving him, in his arms from a magma fist through the chest, and had an emotional breakdown. When he wakes up, he just rampages just going insane.
Yeah, A pretty bad ...more
This kid had it the worst. Like about everyone, he grew up without his mother or father, so his Marine grandpa, Garp, takes care of Luffy. Garp tries "training" the kid to become a Marine too. So when Luffy was about 5 or 6 years old, he would do things like leave him alone in the jungle without food. He would make him fight wild animals like gorilla's to train. He would also drop him off cliffs. When Garp went off to do Marine things which would last months, he would leave him in a bar. So one day when Luffy is 7, he desides to leave Luffy with some mountain bandits that he was blackmailing. Inside there was a kid named Ace who was 10 years old, and Garp's other grandkid. (Not by blood) Luffy got about a mouthful of rice and a glass of water everyday. He noticed Ace leaving everyday so Luffy started following Ace. every time he tried, Ace would try to kill him. He tired kicking down trees and making them crush Luffy, tired letting Croc's get him, tried pushing into fast ...more
Honestly, I think Natsu had a pretty bad childhood. We know that he was killed by dragons in his past, later on resurrected by Zeref into the demon, END.
Who else on this list Got killed by dragons in their past before being resurrected into a demon?
First he was killed by a dragon he did not know his father or mother then igneel disappear and left him alone when he found him he died front of Natsu eye after he search about him 7 years and now he found that his brother is their enemy and he is E.N.D that his best friend Gray want to Destroyed it - akanichan
Being tortured since he was a little kid by his parents and was forced to master assassination techiniques. By the age of 4 he could assassinate people. His body was electrocuted too. He was not allowed to leave the house unless it was a job to assassinate. He was also not allowed to have friends or talk to any kids. Until he left the house after stabbing his mother in the face and attacking his brother. However his other brother(the much stronger one) Found him and forced him to go back home, when he went back home he was tortured once again by his brother.
Her parents mistreated her horribly, she was locked up in a room and starved so badly, she ate a tatami mat and choked. She later killed them as revenge.
The childhoods of the other contenders would seem like heaven compared to hers
Why is she not number 1?!
A good chance she would kill herself if she lived the life of the likes of Guts, Ciel, Robert Haydn, Naruto, the Elrics, Crona or even Erza. But still her life was pretty bad. But honestly I saw the lives of some of her opponents as much worse than her own. Like raped by an crazy cult your parents started girl and the orphan lovers.
Yeah, Allen had it tough. He was first abandoned by his birth parents because of his "cursed" arm, left to live on the streets of England, eventually joining a questionable circus. His adoptive father, Mana Walker then found him and was the first person to actually treat him like a human being. He had then been killed unintentionally killed by Allen himself after being brought back from the dead by the Millennium Earl, by dying in a carriage crash. After, his "Master", General Marian Cross, took him up for training, he ended up getting loads of inhumane amounts of debts, leading to hard and grueling manual labor. When he does join the Black Order, he has to hunt Akuma all the time...
Pretty bad if you ask me.
His parents abandoned him, the man who raised him died right in front of him, he had to kill his friend and he worked his butt off trying to pay his masters debts from his insane spending! HOW IS HE NOT ON HERE?
His debts included 1million (not sure of the currency) and then at as much as the debt
What?!? He doesn't have a bad childhood at all! He gets to go on Jounreys and make friends, usually very easily, he gets to beat the crap out of a trio of idiots on a nearly daily basis, he gets to have girls drop hints that they love him, and, most of all, as well as best of all, HE GETS TO SKIP SCHOOL! HE HAS THE GREATEST CHILDHOOD OF ALL TIME! AND WHAT MAKES IT BETTER IS THAT IT APPARENTLY WILL NEVER END BECAUSE HE'S STILL TEN AFTER SIX JOURNEYS! HE HAS THE best CHILDHOOD AND HE WILL ALWAYS HAVE IT BECAUSE IT IS FOREVER! - HeavyDonkeyKong
He used to be the most powerful being in the whole universe. He saw the fall of empires, the death of trillions. Sometimes, he was the savior others, the destroyer. He was the most feared entity in the entirety of the world, a warrior of the oppressed. Then someone stole his magic blue box, developed little balls based off the design, he got shot, regenerated as a little kid, and now is stuck wandering place to place without aging or dying, forced to use rip-offs of his technology as he makes cute animals fight each other.

His father left him at the age of five and he never knew his grandparents. He had imortality and an inability to age when Pikachu electrocuted him for the first time, though...V 12 Comments
Yes, in my opinion Naruto should be just below gara or on par with him. Simply one of the saddest childhood I've seen. Easily win top 3.
Nagato's pain... Only Nagato can understand..
Nagato deserve better position in this rank after pain suffer
Let me see... Her parents died, leaving her and her brother in the care of their abusive aunt and uncle. The aunt was so mean to her that she ended up relying on her brother for every little thing. This gradually drove her brother insane until he finally killed the aunt, and went into a coma afterwards and was taken by a secret organization (spoiler spoiler cough cough so to everyone else he simply went missing).
In later arcs, when her abusive uncle returns she simply takes the abuse without any complaints. It is revealed she feels responsible for her brother's disappearance and she thinks that if she proves to him that she's strong enough to take the abuse, he might come back. This results in her getting beat up often, and possibly sexually abused. One time she almost kills herself after hallucinating her uncle telling her to stay in a hot bath and count until 100, 000 (or something like that).
Now don't tell me that's not sad.
I feel very bad for her for getting lots of hates even she had very sad childhood. She have broken a very important statue in japan so after that she got a very bad life. Probably a punishment for booking that.
Her childhood is pitiful, because of her ability to read other people mind, her father run away, her friend avoiding her, after her mom brought her to some place, her ability still there, then her mother also run away, then she live with her grandfather and in school, she has no friend
