Top 10 Anime Series That People Either Love or Hate

Let's face it. Not everyone is going to love the anime series you love and not everyone is going to hate the anime series you hate. Think of it as different from Top 10 Anime Series That Get Too Much Hate.
The Top Ten
1 Sword Art Online Sword Art Online is a series of Japanese light novels written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. In 2012, it received an anime adaptation produced by A-1 Pictures and the SAO Project, and is directed by Tomohiko Ito . The first season is divided into two arcs known as "Aincrad" and "Fairy Dance". It has also received a second season, titled Sword Art Online II.

I have long lost my interest in anime but I still stalk Pokemon forums and such. I see A LOT of Sword Art Online fans- as well as Attack on Titan- and they're usually rabid fans. It's sad because I believe that's the biggest turn off to many modern series these days. I don't remember anime fans being as rabid 5, 10, even 15 years ago as they are now. But, it may be due to more social media. You literally can't avoid them in YouTube comments (like, example: why does someone feel the need to bring up anime in a Jenna Marbles comment section? )

Either way, I tend to disassociate myself from those fandoms.

Oh, where do I start? Sword Art Online is essentially treated like Frozen in the anime community, although not as bad as Frozen. Long story short, fans call it the best anime ever, haters call it the worst anime ever. I would go in depth about this anime more, but I'm only here to say that it's loved and hated. If you want to know more about this anime, go look at my Sword Art Online review on Greatest Anime of All Time. Personally, I love this anime. Come at me, Sword Art Online haters.

Best thing that ever happened (besides maybe AoT or highschool dxd) the first anime that I watched that I actually knew what an anime was. I also realize that there are a lot of haters, your opinion is valid but seriously get your head checked. I do understand that ALF wasn't as good as SAO and completely taking out asuna in GGO was not a good thing but everything about this series has a purpose (besides the last part of SAO II, that had no point. But still made me cry poor girl) anyways this anime is amazing only to be rivaled by few and trumped by dxd that is my view on this anime, chao:3

Yeah, I used to like it but then it went really downhill...

Many of the things are unrealistic.

For example, before Yui disappears, Kirito turns her heart into an item.

Dude, Kirito has to be an expert hacker on an international level for that to happen! That is pretty much impossible to do in -- what? -- ten seconds? It's just that there's absolutley NO WAY to hack into the game like that!

2 Fairy Tail Fairy Tail is a manga franchise created by Hiro Mashima. The manga has been adapted into an anime series produced by A-1 Pictures and Satelight, which began broadcasting in Japan on October 12, 2009. Additionally, A-1 Pictures and Satelight have developed seven original video animations and an animated feature film, Fairy Tail the Movie: Phoenix Priestess. The series ended its initial run on March 30, 2013. A new series premiered on TV Tokyo on April 5, 2014.

Haha yup that's true! People gonna hate and they gonna love. Fairy Tail is the BEST in my eyes alongside with DBZ! DBZ started anime for me! And then came pirates vs ninja aka One Piece and Naurto which butchered the anime and manga genre for me for a ' decade! Hate the two of those anime with a bloody passion but mostly because of the fans that they grew! I had not bought a single manga in about a decade till recently after giving Fairy Tail a try and dang it that's the anime that ress'd the genre for me!

Been scanning google for both love and hate for Fairy Tail, One Piece and Naruto and sure enough all three have serious haters and lovers! Def beglonging to this list.

Fairy Tail is pretty much in the same situation as One Piece, only worse. Fairy Tail has fans who love it for the characters, story, feels, animation, and of course, fights. Then there are those who hate it for ripping off One Piece, fanservice, and its execution. While I do hate Lucy Heartfilia, I honestly would say I am actually neutral with Fairy Tail. I respect the opinions of anyone who loves or doesn't like it, though.

People either love the imagination, fun characters, etc, or be those haters who complain about fan service, the friendship speech etc. Choose a side.

This is the best example of an anime that people either love or hate. I am indifferent.

3 Dragon Ball Z Dragon Ball Z is a Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation. Dragon Ball Z follows the adventures of Goku who, along with the Z Warriors, defends the Earth against evil. The action adventures are entertaining and reinforce the concept of good versus evil. Dragon Ball Z teaches valuable character virtues such as teamwork, loyalty, and trustworthiness.

Greatest Anime of All Time says it all. Being number 1 on the list, it's bound to have a lot of rabid fans and haters on there. To be honest, I actually don't watch Dragon Ball Z. I only praise it for its legacy. On the other hand, fans praise it for nostalgia, fights, characters, and funny moments. While the haters bash it for long transformation sequences, fillers, and the fans being nostalgic as well (Charizard syndrome is probably what they're diagnosing). Other than that, I won't say I love or hate it. I'm just okay with it.

As someone else has said: greatest anime of all time.

I'm about to be 30 and have long lost interest in anime but- as soon as anyone mentions DBZ- I'm talking about it. Love it. I can't stand a lot of the new anime because it's become to repetitive and the fandoms are usually crazy. I've noticed DBZ fandom is always fun and, when we're lucky to get new stuff, It's great.

I find it funny most people assume DBZ fans are men.. I, myself, am a woman and know a lot of other female fans 😁. I think DBZ is hated for seeming super masculine.

This is my all time favorite series and I love it. I can understand why people hate it though, almost all of my friends hate.

Dragon Ball Z is a legendary show. Every legend has haters, but the number of love from fans always overweigh the hate, some of which is really baseless

4 Naruto Naruto is an anime and manga franchise Naruto, created by Masashi Kishimoto. The manga was later adapted into a television anime, which was produced by Studio Pierrot and Aniplex. It premiered across Japan on the terrestrial TV Tokyo and other TX Network stations on October 3, 2002. The first series lasted 220 episodes, while Naruto: Shippuden, a sequel to the original series, has been airing since February 15, 2007. In addition to the anime series, Studio Pierrot has developed eleven movies and several original video animations. Other types of merchandise include light novels, video games, and trading cards developed by several companies.

Okay. I'm not into Naruto, but I don't necessarily love it that much nor do I hate it that much. I just admire it for how well its managed to become popular and famous as an anime. Rabid fans are usually classified as Narutards, while the anime also attracts a LOT of hate. However, there are some logical fans who aren't rabid and even some people who just move on with another anime. It isn't perfect, but it isn't a bad series. However, both the rabid fans and the rabid haters need to stop.

Let me tell you how this works.

First of all, die hard Naruto fans (like me! ) start RANTING about Naruto to all our friends. Our friends, on the other hand, have two reactions.

Either they start watching it because you like, threatened them to (we are die hard fans, after all) or they just really don't like it.

I love Naruto. It's a long series though.

It should be the number 1 because it tells the real story of human life not like DBZ in which they beat enemy and after beating him a more strong enemy comes and story repeats over and over again with different effects.

5 Attack on Titan Attack on Titan, also known as Shingeki no Kyojin in Japanese, created by Hajime Isayama, is one of the most popular Japanese anime series to be released. It was first watched in Japan during 2013 and was dubbed in English to be watched in America in 2014. It is best known for its emotional moments, apocalyptic setting, and its dramatic story line, and action packed scenes.

It's almost like the Five Night's At Freddy's of the anime community, though Attack on Titan is in no way near as bad as FNAF. Attack on Titan has a huge fan base, but most of the haters then hate the anime series mostly for how much they think the fan base is cancerous. Like Sword Art Online, fans call it the best anime ever (like I haven't seen that with every anime that comes out every year). And like Sword Art Online, haters say it sucks. Of course, I'm going to say I love Attack on Titan either way.

I am one of the few who is very MEH about this show. I really do not care about it in any way...however, I DO love attack on titan junior high. That show was great.

Undeserving of all its hate but sadly true.

I love this anime!

6 One Piece One Piece is a manga franchise created by Eiichiro Oda. The manga has been adapted into an original video animation (OVA) produced by Production I.G in 1998, and an anime series produced by Toei Animation, which began broadcasting in Japan in 1999 and has aired 851 episodes to date.

Based on my opinion, I think that one piece is an incredible anime. Simply because of the amazing story plotting, epics battles and most importantly friendship. There are a few scenes where you'll never forget. I remember my first time watching One Piece it gave me goosebumps, I knew it was going to be amazing. I hope you guys really try to finish all of the episodes and don't give up half way but after you started watching I don't think you can even go for toilet breaks, real good anime

There are people who love it for the unique plot, great storytelling, epic dialogue, epic fights, and awesome characters. Then there are people who hate it for the art, animation, and slow pacing. In my personal opinion, I just respect it as an anime series like I do with Naruto. But there's no denying we just have to ignore the overrating and the underrating by these two groups.

Not sure if people also hate One Piece for its bad 4Kids English dub. Either watch the Funimation dub or old-fashioned English sub.

One Piece is an awesome anime but the characters can get a bit weird.

7 Pokemon Pokémon, abbreviated from the Japanese title of Pocket Monsters and currently advertised in English as Pokémon: The Series, is a Japanese anime television series, which has been adapted for the international television markets. It was first broadcast in Japan on April 1, 1997, in the United States on September 8, 1998.

Oh, this is going to be a long one. I know a lot of people on here either love or hate the Pokemon anime. I don't think it's that bad, but unfortunately, this is the only anime on the list that I honestly hate. Anyways, the fans of the Pokemon anime usually tend to keep saying it is the best and bash other kids shows like Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh!. Now as for the haters, they constantly say Digimon is better and that Pokemon is just for kids, with there being enough hate to have it on the top 10 on Top 10 Worst Anime. Personally, I just don't like the anime, I just love the games. But I respect anyone's opinions if they agree or disagree with me. But Pokemon isn't bad compared to *shudders* Boku no Pico.

There is both haters and fans out there. I love the games. True. But the Pokémon anime I am neutral on. I do like the battling and some of the characters, but I do hate some of the moments, such as how reparative it is, how overrated it is, Ash always losing the Pokémon league, the whole Ash-greninja thing, a lot of the characters are horrible and of course, you know. Begins with an S, is a mary sue, obsesses over Ash, is completely useless. Yes, you know who. Don't get me started

Anyway, this anime is both overrated and hated at the same time. I think I will stick to the games.

Personally, I'm ok with this anime. It had some pretty good seasons (particularly XY and Diamond/Pearl) but also some ABYSMAL ones too (Best Wishes aka Black/White).

Pokemon used to be the greatest thing ever but because of the fanbase and Charizard fanboys, I don't give a dang about this garbage.

8 Future Diary Future Diary is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Sakae Esuno. The plot surrounds a battle royale in which each combatant has a diary with entries from the future. The manga was serialized in the Kadokawa Shoten's Shōnen Ace between January 2006 and December 2010.

You either love or hate this anime.

Personally, I love it, but I know it has plot holes and crazy-ass annoying characters. But I loved the concept of it. It's just difficult to write a plot like this without leaving any gaps.

I love Mirai Nikki but it is possible I am biased because it was one of the first anime I ever watched... I don't know my opinions are awful

9 Sonic X Sonic X is a Japanese anime television series created by TMS Entertainment and based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series published by Sega.
10 Kill La Kill Kill la Kill is an anime television series produced by Trigger. In Kill la Kill, Ryuko Matoi transfers to a new high school in order to find her father's murderer.

Either you love this anime for the badass fights, the OST, and the message in it OR you hate it for the crazy scenes and crazy amount of fanservice. Although, I think the message was meaningful and the fights were awesome, along with the amazing OST. The only thing that bothered me a little was the amount of fanservice. I didn't hate KLK for that, though. But well, either you love it or hate it.

Kill La Kill was a great series. I personally liked it. What throws people from liking it from what I've seen is it's fan service. I'm aware that's supposed to be a parody of other magical girl shows and has some meaning in Ryuko's story arc, but some of it is unwarranted. (Ragyo sexual assaulting her own child was very uncalled for. Like, seriously? why did they insert that in? )

Love this show, the fan service didn't bother me at all because it's meant to be satirical and a parody of other magic girl shows. Ryuko! atoi is also my favourite anime character ever, a breath of fresh air from a majority of cliche anime protagonists.

Like. The anime though

The Contenders
11 Seven Deadly Sins The Seven Deadly Sins is a Japanese fantasy manga/anime series written and illustrated by Nakaba Suzuki.

One of my friends told me to watch it a while ago so I finally decided to yesterday...it's so good I am already halfway through the series. My favorites are Ban and Meliodas.

Seven Deadly Sins is amazing. I love all of the characters for different reasons. But I must admit I love the dynamic between Ban and Meliodas.

12 Akame Ga Kill Akame ga Kill! (アカメが斬る!, Akame ga Kiru! is a manga published in Gangan Joker authored by Takahiro and Tashiro Tetsuya. It received an anime adaptation that premiered on July 6, 2014 and ended on December 14, 2014.

Let's be fair, Akame ga Kill has a great plot, but killing off the main characters got WAY out of hand. Leone was my favorite! Takahiro, how could you?!? I'm writing a fanfiction to spite you and your decisions!

I love this show but I understand why there are haters. I like that its not afraid to kill fan favorites... But... its REALLY not afraid to kill fan favorites...if you know what I mean.

I have no problem with the fact that there are Akame Ga Kill haters, because I can expect a lot of them.

It's SelfDestruct's favorite anime. Hmm... let's put aside our differences because we can all agree Akame ga Kill! is both loved and hated.

13 The Devil is a Part-Timer The Devil Is a Part-Timer is a Japanese light novel series written by Satoshi Wagahara, with illustrations by Oniku.
14 Sailor Moon Sailor Moon is a Japanese shōjo manga series by Naoko Takeuchi. It was originally serialized in Nakayoshi from 1991 to 1997; the 52 individual chapters were published in 18 tankōbon volumes. ...read more.
15 Neon Genesis Evangelion Neon Genesis Evangelion, commonly referred to as Evangelion or Eva, is a Japanese animated television series produced by Gainax and Tatsunoko Production, and directed by Hideaki Anno.

I actually used to hate this anime just because I thought Gurren Lagann was better and that Shinji Ikari was a wimp. Not to mention its fan base. However, over time, I managed to mature and finally found that both the fans AND the haters have their faults. The fans get angry at anyone who hates Shinji or Asuka, but then there are haters who simply hate the anime solely because of Shinji and that it's popular. Seriously, Evangelion is plagued by both of those two groups. But I also want to watch it as well. I will probably love it.

The only way I can see people hating this show is it's because it's waay over hyped and they had very high expectations for it. This show was not perfect at all of course and had its major problems in the 90s (they lacked the budget to make the perfection they wanted), but it was one of the greatest.

I love this show. People dislike it because they're too thick to figure it out

16 Bleach Bleach is a Japanese anime series based on Tite Kubo's manga of the same name. Bleach adapts the first 54 volumes of Tite Kubo's manga series of the same name. In addition, 4 anime-original arcs were broadcast in-between and during the adaptations of original arcs of the manga. ...read more.

Oh well.. It's the only anime that I watched from start to finish.. Never gave me any boring episodes.. Even the movies are great.. I just love Ichigo and Rukia

Try watching it. And I guarantee you...this anime will climb up to you personal list of most favourite anime.

You love the earlier episodes, and love all the transitions from the manga, but hate the filler arcs.

Skip the fillers, it's actually a great shounen series.

17 Tokyo Ghoul Tokyo Ghoul is a Japanese dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Sui Ishida. It was serialized in Shueisha's seinen manga magazine Weekly Young Jump between September 2011 and September 2014, and it has been collected in fourteen tankōbon volumes as of August 2014.

This gets way too much hate. People hate it just because it's not like the manga. (I've read all the manga by the way) So what if it isn't? Fullmetal alchemist isn't like the manga, but it's still amazing. Tokyo ghoul is probably my favourite anime ever. The hate needs to stop!

Oh hell naw! You had the audacity to even TOUCH Tokyo ghoul! Why is this even on the list?! A lot of people like Tokyo ghoul. There is absolutely NO reason to hate on it!

I am actually shocked that no one tried to stand up for Tokyo Ghoul on this list. It's quite popular on TheTopTens, actually! Even though I haven't watched it yet...

18 Gurren Lagann Gurren Lagann, known in Japan as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, is an anime series animated by Gainax and co-produced by Aniplex and Konami. It was also directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and written by veteran playwright Kazuki Nakashima.

Dear visitor who just commented : At least write spoiler alert before the spoiler! You belong in Sailor Moon!

I did not want kamina to die! It was depressing in a way...

19 Fullmetal Alchemist Fullmetal Alchemist is an anime series adapted from the manga of the same name by Hiromu Arakawa. It is about two brothers, Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric, trying to restore their bodies after failing at bringing their mother back to life. It aired in 2003 and was remade as Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood in 2009.

Yes. Fullmetal Alchemist has fans AND haters. It's pretty much the same thing with Attack on Titan. Everything good about an anime is what is loved by fans, and rabid fans is what is hated by haters. That sums up what I pretty much know Fullmetal Alchemist has in terms of who loves it and hates it. But I do wanna watch it though. I might love it.

Either you love the non Canon bits, or you hate it because you think Brotherhood is better.

I gave this series a chance, but I just didn't like it at all.

If this is about the 2003 series and not Brotherhood than I personally feel as the hate for it is completely because of westernized mentality of the "manga is always better and the anime should always follow the manga." I own all of the manga and watch both the original and brotherhood and there is something people need to know. The manga was still in progress during the time that the first adaptation was made. Eventually, the anime caught up and instead of stopping it, the writer of the manga allowed the anime writers to continue with the series. She basically allowed them to do their own interpretation of her own series, even if it isn't perfect. (I personally like the tone of the 2003 ending over the 'real' ending. It was much more darker and bittersweet, which slightly fits the tone of FMA better. But the manga/brotherhood ending isn't bad either.)

You shouldn't see the 2003 series as bad because it "didn't follow the manga". Just because it didn't ...more

20 Kirby: Right Back at Ya! Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, known in Japan as Hoshi no Kirby, is a Japanese anime series created by Warpstar, Inc.
21 Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is a Japanese anime television series produced by Gainax, as well as a series of tie-in media developed around it. The series ran from October to December 2010 on BS Nittele.

I watched an episode or two of this anime, and to be honest, I loved it! The comed was well thought and mature enough for my enjoyment, as well as the characters being hilarious and witty. I also understand if you do not like this anime, for the animation, voices, and plot can get pretty confusing/annoying. I truly recommend this anime for a good laugh.

This is more of a guilty pleasure anime for me.

22 Death Note Death Note is a Japanese television drama anime series based on the manga series of the same name by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. The show is centered around Light Yagami - a promising highschooler and aspiring detective with a strong sense of "justice".

I didn't even watch the anime yet and I recommended it to one of my followers already. However, I do acknowledge quite a big disturbance with both the fans and haters. However, I did hear they did die down quite a bit, as the fans talk less rabidly about the shock and suspense of the anime and haters talk less about the ending. Other than that, Death Note doesn't seem bad. Just steer clear of these people.

This show is too emo for me.

23 Beyblade Beyblade is a 2001 Japanese anime television series based on Takao Aoki's manga series of the same name, which itself is based on the Beyblade spinning tops.
24 Nanbaka Nanbaka, also known as Nanbaka - The Numbers, is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Shō Futamata. An anime television series adaptation by Satelight aired between 5 October 2016 and 22 March 2017. The title is a play on words, combining the name of the prison, which is the Japanese transcription of the word "number", and the Japanese word "baka" for "fool" or "idiot".
25 Clannad After Story Clannad is based off a visual novel. It follows the story of a high school senior named Tomoya Okazaki, a delinquent who floats through life caring about very little. He hates the town he lives in and his alcoholic father.

He and his friend Yohei Sunohara spend most of their time skipping school and pranking other students.

Things change however when he meets a girl, Nagisa Furukawa. He ends up taking an interest in her and decides to help her revive the school's dying drama club.

Along the way he meets a number of other girls that he befriends and helps in their various goals around the school. As he helps the girls, Tomoya grows in turn and begins to care about the town. ...read more.

It's pretty much in the same situation its predecessor Clannad is in.
