But wait, there's more! Have you ever thought about not only which anime should not have become adapted into live-action, but also anime that should never get live-action EVER? Please feel free to post any suggestions about which anime series should never make contact with live-action.

The Top Ten

1 Dragon Ball Z Dragon Ball Z Dragon Ball Z is a Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation. Dragon Ball Z follows the adventures of Goku who, along with the Z Warriors, defends the Earth against evil. The action adventures are entertaining and reinforce the concept of good versus evil. Dragon Ball Z teaches valuable more.

I was eighteen when the live action movie came out. The trailer looked terrible and I only ever saw it once. The movie itself was just bad. Not even so bad it's good. I don't know who to blame. James Wong? Maybe. He seems like a better executive producer than a director. He's only had seven directing credits in his career. However, I'm willing to bet it was more studio interference. Either way, someone messed up big time. - RoseRedFlower

This was the worst adaptation of any franchise. Ever. Of all time. It's like the writers for this movie were sitting around thinking "how can we ruin a beloved anime story and make money off it? " - NerdBunny

The film makers basically took the name of a popular anime series and adapt it to make money. Evolution? More like degeneration. - Goku02

Directed by James Wong. - SelfDestruct

2 Midori: Shojo Tsubaki Midori: Shojo Tsubaki

What mentally insane person thought it was a good idea to give the WORST ANIME OF ALL TIME ACCORDING TO PHANTOMSTRIDER AND ANIME AMERICA a live-action remake? I'm not joking. They made a live-action adaptation for this crime against humanity in 2016. - PerfectImpulseX

3 Attack on Titan Attack on Titan Attack on Titan, also known as Shingeki no Kyojin in Japanese, created by Hajime Isayama, is one of the most popular Japanese anime series to be released. It was first watched in Japan during 2013 and was dubbed in English to be watched in America in 2014. It is best known for its emotional moments, more.

Hajime Isayama really blew it this time. He had a good manga and a good anime, but perhaps the one thing he never should have experimented with was live-action. So many things went wrong with both movies. First, all of the main characters are out of character, especially Eren turning from a rage-filled teen to a neutered wimp and Mikasa no longer being the badass female protagonist she was in the original manga and anime. Second, they didn't include Levi in the movies and replaced him with that Shikishima imposter. Third, how the hell can they throw Titans? Not to mention it was shown that they had too much advanced technology that would have been able to destroy the Titans (what was the point of the 3D Maneuver Gear then? ). The only good thing that came from this was a preview of Season 2. That's IT. Just the preview, not the movies. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

4 Neon Genesis Evangelion Neon Genesis Evangelion Neon Genesis Evangelion, commonly referred to as Evangelion or Eva, is a Japanese animated television series produced by Gainax and Tatsunoko Production, and directed by Hideaki Anno.

No, no, never! We have the original and the Rebuilds, that's fine. And guess what? Michael Bay wanted to make a live action Evangelion. Please do not let him give one of my favorite anime the Transformers treatment! - Elric-san

There has been rumors of a live-action Evangelion movie for decades, and seeing how many fans Evangelion has, can you imagine how insulting it would be to the fans if a live-action movie weren't faithful to the characters? WatchMojo must be insane to think Evangelion should get a live-action movie. If anything, just stick to traditional animation and that's it. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

Yeah, that's a dumb idea to be honest. And considering the material of this anime, I wouldn't be surprised if Bay directed it. I think he wanted to actually and we know how 'great' of a director it is. Keep Bay Away. - RoseRedFlower

5 One Piece One Piece One Piece is a manga franchise created by Eiichiro Oda. The manga has been adapted into an original video animation (OVA) produced by Production I.G in 1998, and an anime series produced by Toei Animation, which began broadcasting in Japan in 1999 and has aired 749 episodes to date.

Don't do it. Just don't. Some things are better left in anime and manga than in live action. This is number one to me. It's wacky, it's dark and it's great. A live action movie would be terrible because of all the crazy stuff that happens. Whether it's Luffy's stretchy arms, Roronoa fighting with his swords or just how the characters look. This would end up maybe being worse than Dragon Ball live action movie. And don't make me say that again. - RoseRedFlower

Even the fans of One Piece know it would be hard to find actors to fit the roles of the colorful and diverse cast of the Straw Hat Pirates. Not to mention it would be hard to replicate Luffy's ability to stretch his arms after seeing a similar fail in the Parasyte live-action movies. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

What could be seen in a fiction, should stay in the fiction, making a live-action of it wouldn't be a good idea,

and yes, it would be hard, but also full of CG animations, so it's better to keep it traditionnal.

6 Sword Art Online Sword Art Online Sword Art Online is a series of Japanese light novels written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. In 2012, it received an anime adaptation produced by A-1 Pictures and the SAO Project, and is directed by Tomohiko Ito . The first season is divided into two arcs known as "Aincrad" and "Fairy Dance". more.

See the part where I typed that SAO fans are looking forward to the upcoming live-action T.V. series? Well, that's now an outdated item. I just recently stumbled upon an article saying that now fans of the series are not happy about it, so now I'm not the only one who's not looking forward to the live-action adaptation. And it's not hard to understand why this change in opinion surfaced. Given Hollywood already butchered their live-action adaptations of Ghost in the Shell and Death Note, this could (no, this WILL) become the next victim of a horrid live-action adaptation. The worst part is it's not going to stop there. There's already an upcoming Cowboy Bebop live-action adaptation in development. Seriously, has making live-action adaptations of anime and then failing at them become a Hollywood trend? - ModernSpongeBobSucks

While a lot of SAO fans are looking forward to the upcoming American live-action T.V. series of Sword Art Online, I'm not. Given how 2017 was plagued with the financial and critical disaster that was the live-action Ghost in the Shell film and the newfound controversy of the whitewashed cast of the upcoming live-action Death Note film, I'm not too fond at the idea of a live-action SAO. As for every live action adaptation of an anime by Hollywood, I'm most worried about what the cast will be like. Since the original creator Reki Kawahara is getting involved in this live-action adaptation, keeping the live-action adaptation faithful to the anime and the light novels might not be a problem. However, whitewashing and CGI visuals may be a major issue to come. Skydance Media, you better not mess this up. Otherwise, I'm not supporting the live-action SAO. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

Be proud that this show has a Live Action series so that the anime will have less heat on it - YourWaifuSucks

Oh, great... Now I heard the writers of the upcoming Tomb Raider (2018) live-action adaptation are writing the live-action SAO T.V. series. I could care less if people love or hate the anime, but I already know the live-action T.V. series is going to screw up big time. I'm honestly tired of people in the comments saying the source material and the anime sucks (come on, the light novels and and anime adaptation aren't even that bad! ), but getting back on topic, I can already see how much the live-action T.V. series will fail. Poor casting choices, blatant Americanization, horrible CGI, awful rendering of monster enemies and bosses in the game, etc. If it does actually turn out to be good, I might check it out, though I wouldn't be surprised if the live-action T.V. series by Skydance Media became a flop. Again, it doesn't matter if you love or hate the show. The live-action is just going to be disgraceful to both the anime and light novels. I'm already betting there's a 50/50 chance ...more - ModernSpongeBobSucks

7 Mobile Suit Gundam

G-Saviour is worse than DB Evolution and The Last Airbender combined. - PerfectImpulseX

8 Kill la Kill Kill la Kill Kill la Kill is an anime television series produced by Trigger. In Kill la Kill, Ryuko Matoi transfers to a new high school in order to find her father's murderer.

There would be PC parents or people in general hating it for nudity. When nudity actually brought out character development and story surprisingly. Plus with how awful (not written badly awful but just an awful person) Ragyo is, people will bash it for how she treated her children. When the horrible treatment is essential to the story and main characters. That's just how I see it. - RoseRedFlower

The live-action movies would be rated NC-17 or R18+ unless they had to tone down the nudity.

9 Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Gurren Lagann, known in Japan as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, is an anime series animated by Gainax and co-produced by Aniplex and Konami. It was also directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and written by veteran playwright Kazuki Nakashima.

Just who the hell would even think about giving TTGL a live-action movie?! I don't think even actors could do the impossible like the original characters did. It wouldn't be as epic and fast-paced as the final battle was in the anime if they gave TTGL a live-action movie. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

10 Cardcaptor Sakura Cardcaptor Sakura Cardcaptor Sakura, abbreviated as CCS and also known as Cardcaptors, is a Japanese shōjo manga series written and illustrated by the manga group Clamp.

If they ever do a live-action adaptation of this anime, then I'm afraid it might ruin the source material for me. - PerfectImpulseX

The Contenders

11 JoJo's Bizarre Adventure JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is an anime and manga franchise originally written by Hirohiko Araki. It centers around the perilous journey of the members of the legendary Joestar bloodline.

How are they going to replicate ORAORAORA and MUDAMUDAMUDA in live-action anyways? Plus, it would be hard to imitate the same feels and animation that JJBA gives to its fans. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

12 HeartCatch PreCure! HeartCatch PreCure! Heartcatch Precure is a Japanese anime series and the seventh series of the Pretty Cure anime franchise by Izumi Todo that premiered on February 7, 2010, replacing Fresh Pretty Cure! on its initial timeslot. The series theme is flowers, which leads to their true definitions of Hanakotoba as of the season's more.

Same as Cardcaptor Sakura - PerfectImpulseX

13 Tokyo Ghoul Tokyo Ghoul

I swear, if they make a live action movie of this, I will burn down the house of the person who wanted to make the live action film and feed him to ghouls - TwilightKitsune

It would probably just be another whitewashed box office bomb like the 2017 live-action Ghost in the Shell. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

Sorry, TwilightKitsune. I have some VERY BAD news to tell you. I just recently learned that Tokyo Ghoul is getting a Japanese live-action film adaptation this summer in 2017. Here's to praying it's not a total butcher of the Tokyo Ghoul franchise like the live-action Attack on Titan movies. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

Okay, they're making a live action film of this. Better get my matchsticks folks. - TwilightKitsune

Tokyo Ghoul can just stick to traditional animation for all I know! Take a look at its companion series, Parasyte, and you'll know why. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

14 Ghost in the Shell Ghost in the Shell

So... while I've never watched anything Ghost in the Shell-related, I do respect its cultural impact and influence as a franchise, especially in the West. However... the live-action adaptation by Hollywood that was released just recently... got below a 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes as I write this comment. While it's probably better than Dragonball: Evolution since its visuals were at least breathtaking and Scarlett Johansson was said to have performed well as Motoko Kusanagi, I haven't heard much praise about the live-action adaptation beyond that. It also doesn't help that it was also suffering from casting criticism due to its cast being composed of white actors and actresses despite the source material involving Japanese citizens. Wow... I can already bet Black Critic Guy is going to be bashing the live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell HARD after watching it. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

Honestly, the only problem the movie had for me was the story. Which is sadly one of the most essential elements of the story. Like a lot of anime live action they tried to add so much in from the movies, the manga and the show that it just didn't work out. So it messed with the pacing. Only long time fans will basically get what's going on. It's the least bad in my opinion but it did receive badly. Which did not help anime or live action anime movies. - RoseRedFlower

Well... my man Black Critic Guy seems to be in full-blown rage against the live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. I mean, just look at his Twitter account. I can already tell he's going to tear the live-action adaptation a NEW ass. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

I haven't watched the live action movie, but from the trailer I don't find it to be as terrible as Dragonball Evolution. I hope Ghost in the Shell wouldn't be butchered the way DBZ was. Look, even the name 'Dragonball' was misspelled! It should be 'Dragon Ball' - Goku02

17 Death Note Death Note Death Note is a Japanese television drama series based on the manga series of the same name by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. The show is centered around Light Yagami a promising highschooler and aspiring detective with a strong sense of "justice".

Once again, 2017 has to plague us with yet another live-action adaptation of a manga/anime franchise since Ghost in the Shell. I mean, come on, Hollywood! Another whitewashed adaptation? Well... while I do agree with Black Critic Guy that it was a good move for Netflix to Americanize the names of the cast of Death Note, I don't know how this is going to turn out. I mean, why did they turn L from an interesting emo detective from Europe to some hooded Muslim (not that I have anything against Muslims. I apologize if this sentence offends anyone)? Then again, I could be wrong... or I could be right and what Black Critic Guy was saying about his thoughts on this new live-action adaptation by Hollywood was true after all. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

I have no discrimination against black people, but they shouldn't have let a black guy play the role of one of the whitest anime characters ever. And Ryuk should have been made to look like the REAL Ryuk. - Goku02

The 2017 live-action adaptation of Death Note by Netflix currently has a 40% on Rotten Tomatoes right now as I write this comment. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

I liked three movies of the Death Note series. Which is: Death Note (2006), Death Note 2: The Last Name, L: Change the World (2008) and that's it. The Netflix series was pretty underwhelming for me. And the newest Death Note movie sparked some controversy with the term 'white washing' being thrown around. I wouldn't have minded if one of the characters were black like Matsuda or Aizawa. But when you have a character like L, who was specifically drawn to look like he is, it's pretty odd for me. He's not supposed to look like 'the World's Greatest Detective'. He has dark shadows under his eyes because he doesn't sleep much and looked like a social outcast because he wasn't good at being social. When you decide to change all of that, it seems like a dumb move. Why not other characters? Why not make Mogi, Aizawa, Matsuda or the other task force members black? It wouldn't affect their character unlike L. - RoseRedFlower

18 Parasyte -the maxim- Parasyte -the maxim-

Oh my gosh, they ruined some major aspects of Parasyte. First, the fights are inferior compared to the ones in the anime and the way the Parasytes fight aren't even fast-paced at all. Second, they changed Migi's voice (then again, everyone has an opinion, but I loved Aya Hirano's voice of Migi better). Third, why did they have to go and replace the rock-throwing scene (people who have watched the anime know what I mean) with a scene of shooting an arrow? The only good thing about this was that it wasn't as terrible as Attack on Titan's live-action movies. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

Well, it is your opinion and I do respect it by the way. And I do have to admit it's better than the Attack on Titan live-action movies and Dragonball: Evolution. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

19 Fist of the North Star Fist of the North Star

Well... it got one... and I have nothing to say. I mean Kenshiro looks like a fool when carrying out his signature move. - SelfDestruct

Eeyep. No doubt about it that this live-action adaptation was awful. - ModernSpongeBobSucks

20 Cowboy Bebop Cowboy Bebop Cowboy Bebop is a 1998 anime television series animated by Sunrise featuring a production team led by director Shinichirō Watanabe, screenwriter Keiko Nobumoto, character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto, mechanical designer Kimitoshi Yamane, and composer Yoko Kanno.

Oh please don't make this live action. I would hate to see Spike degraded downwards or them ruin the story. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to add in an annoying kid side character. *shivers* - RoseRedFlower

I may not have watched Cowboy Bebop yet, but I am HOPING Cowboy Bebop never gets a live-action adaptation. Please, we don't need another Ghost in the Shell situation! - ModernSpongeBobSucks

Hollywood just never learns... They've given us Dragonball: Evolution, Ghost in the Shell (2017), Death Note (2017), and now this. The previous two were all awful live-action iterations of the original. I don't see much going for the live-action Death Note and I'm already not looking forward to an American live-action SAO T.V. series. Sorry, RoseRedFlower. I didn't want this to happen, but unfortunately, a live-action Cowboy Bebop is now a nightmarish reality. - ModernSpongeBobSucks
