I am so happy that everyone from shonen enthusiasts, to lovers of mature and complex anime can all rally behind this series. It's a show with quite literally something for everyone. There are extremely well choreographed fight scenes, brilliant comedy, an extraordinary cast of memorable characters, phenomenal performances in both sub and dub etc etc but the thing that really makes this series is the absolutely massive story and detailed, rich world created with its own history and rules, yet at the centre is a human story about the love between two brothers. I could go on and on but suffice to say that FMA is one of the biggest and richly detailed anime around yet never loses sight about what the story is really about, the simple and astonishing relationship between the Brothers Elric and the way they change the lives of people around them.

By a long way my favourite anime without a shadow of a doubt and I have seen a lot of anime. Damn near flawless series. - togutas

FMA has so much heart. It sends a great message to all of the viewers. That anything worth having is worth the sacrifice. Its about redemption, life, love, determination and the pathways that connect us all. The plot is amazing with so many interesting characters with different backgrounds, different reasons to be who they are. The philosophical aspects of Fullmetal Alchemist is problem one of the most amazing parts of the series. This anime makes you question your own resolve, your own journey, as you journey with Ed and Al. This anime has great character development and a action-packed story. With the perfect blend of thoughtfulness and action, this amazing masterpiece deserves to be at least in the top five best animes of all time.

This was probably the first anime I ever watched so it holds a soft spot for me. But the fact that it blended a sense of fantasy as well as realism is what makes it so unbeatable. As far as character development and plot goes it also in my opinion beats some of the animes listed above, and I especially loved the originality of the first series and how different it was from the manga-in all, I actually preferred it to the second interpretation because it was far more unique. Anyone who hasn't at least watched one episode most certainly should because I guarantee it will pique your interest

Actually, Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 is actually better than Brotherhood because of it's maturity and it gives you much more emotion than Brotherhood. Plus, even though the openings in Brotherhood are good too, but the ones in Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 are more catchy.
People are complaining that Brotherhood 'follows the manga more than Fullmetal Alchemist', actually, the manga wasn't complete when they were still making Fullmetal Alchemist so they tried predicting what would happen and they did a pretty good job up until the ending, and let's just say they really did portray the melodramatic scenes even though they were just guessing, which I thought was pretty damn cool. That's why Fullmetal Alchemist should definitely be in First place on this list! Unlike the crappy shounen and slice of life genres because this is a masterpiece. - NerdyPweeps

Like other people have said, this show even though it is short, is amazing. It is for a more mature audience, but the over all plot is brilliant. It had me staying up all night just to want to know what happens next. You get really attached to the characters as well, its almost like you get to be friend with them. This Anime will make you laugh, it will make you sit on the edge of the seat, and it will for sure make you cry. It makes you asses your own life. Someone once told me that you should gage things on what you learn from them, and I can say this show taught me about myself. So if you know whats good for you, watch this.

Full Metal Alchemist is by far my favorite anime. The plot line is the perfect mixture between humor and thrill. The character relations are definitely strong throughout the series as well as many other aspects of the show. Full Metal Alchemist shows the signs of an amazing anime with only the first few episodes, so if it was longer, I could easily see it taking 1st or 2nd place. If you haven't seen Full Metal Alchemist yet, I would strongly advise you to; many reviews about this series are false and anime lovers should keep their mind open about watching it.

Talk about popularity. This anime used to be extremely popular and well liked. I did a quick search over the internet and found out that this was actually voted as the most liked anime series for 2005 and 2006, and why am I not surprised. Actually, I just saw this anime recently, although I've been hearing about it (it's inevitable) but ignored the hype for I was under the influence of the drug most popularly known as "Rurouni Kenshin" at that time. But after I've seen the series, I was like.. wow. Great story and great cast of characters too. If there are series that revolutionized Anime, Full Metal Alchemist has to be one of them. - olrak15

I MEAN JUST WOW! If you want a anime that will make you rethink the way you LIVE then this is what you need to watch! My favorite episode is literately called fullmetal alchemist it's the episode when you realize just how human these chars really are! Two brothers cry laugh and go on an epic journey to get back there bodies, after they lost them in a terrible accident trying to revive there mother using the biggest taboo in there world. Human transmutation. I swear to god that this anime will change your life and will be your "forever"

The best story ever... And most of all, the story tries to logically explain every incident and action taking place. The plot is unpredictable, which makes it it all the more interesting. In conclusion, I had tears in my eyes when this series ended, know the fact that it would be the last time I would experience the Alchemy world. But as they say, all good things must come to an end, and make way for the better. I doubt that there would be any show more enticing and touching as this one, but hey, I surely do hope so

This, by far, is my favorite anime of all time. I have never seen such a wonderful combination of action, humor, deep emotion, and a strong character driven story. The soundtrack is beautiful, the voice acting (in Japanese, and especially in English) is wonderful, the story is creative and interesting, and the depth of the characters is lifelike. The worst part about the show is it's animation, which isn't even bad. I strongly prefer this to Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball Z, Elfen Lied, and even Naoki Urasawa's Monster. Never has an anime ever had such a strong emotional effect on me. I strongly recommend that everyone who reads this comment should immediately start watching this series, and watch the whole thing through. You will not be disappointed.

Depth of characters without excessive dragging some anime's suffer from. The are relate-able on many levels. Good balance of the sophisticated matters the brothers have to deal with and reminding the viewer that they are still children and have a sense of innocence about them. Action is suspenseful and expertly done. The mystical FMA universe you are drawn to captures the imagination and lack of overtly adult themes makes it suitable for younger viewers as well - despite some emotional concepts being a bit to complex for them to grasp initially.

I don't know why people just look at popularity. This show isn't just popular, it had a story that blew our minds away, it had an incredible cast of characters that are all likable, it was emotional and funny, and it never dragged on for long periods of time like dragon ball which in all gave it a good pace. This is why Fullmetal Alchemist deserves number one. Either this or Deathnote deserves that spot at the top. - metalmaiden

Fullmetal Alchemist. My first and FAR favorite anime. I remember when I saw an accident or something that killed people, I just shrugged it off, not caring because it didn't effect me. I know, its horrible. But this show made me open my eyes a bit more. Knowing how it felt to be a victim and the consequences for bad choices. This show just changed my life in a way and it is funny and it just makes you think twice about life.

It ranks as the top anime followed by Death Note, Stein's Gate, Elfen Lied, Bleach and Naruto... The Superb Plot, perfect balance of the emotions and fights, excellent character integration are it's USP. Maybe Death Note and Stein's Gate have more innovative storylines, but the fact that though the lead character is not the most powerful character, he still ends up being the most pivotal character is fascinating and takes the series above the others!

I am only 11,but I think it deserves a better spot. I think what really makes this so legendary is the fact that it isn't like the other anime with the overpowered and things that just could never really happen, but it is a even anime, like it is so much alike to real life and the outcome is to amazing because it is not like other main stream anime of the overpowered, but it is so surprising for the fact that the outcome is not more like Anime, but more like How real life's outcome would have been. The other part is that the real creator is a woman who many most likely think that a man would me smarter and it affects me as I am a girl.

This anime movie sure is amazing! I really loved it so much! If I were to choose my own fave anime, no doubt this would be my top 5... It truly inspires people... My brother also loves this movie... This is the first movie which made me an addict... Each of the characters has their own uniqueness... The story itself is captivating.. I recommend this anime movie to you... It's worth-watching. You sure won't regret it at the end. I'm just one of those people who are strongly addicted to anime series... So please watch full metal alchemist... It'll inspire you.. Best movie ever!

I am yet to watch Brotherhood but I didn't get what everyone loves about this show? I watched it dubbed in hopes to better understand the plot yet the only thing I really liked about the show was the characters and the show's ability to transition between serious and relaxed. That being said, the emotional episodes relating to the death and funeral of Hughes as well as Nina Tucker's combining with her dog were brilliantly done and were actually kind of emotionally scarring. - jacko_coates

Like full metal alchemist because of its awesome characters and great storyline It also has a lot of action adventure and it had some sad parts Which made it The bad guys were also pretty good they well-written unlike some in Dragon Ball Z Who were just stupid and strength really didn't suit what they look like better and I've also said that the beginning was pretty good because it explained a lot and set you up for what's next

I was taken on an adventure when I watched this anime. I was hooked from the very beginning, and everything about this show had blown me away. I felt that I had truly developed as a person. The characters are lovable, the plot is deep and fascinating, and you truly learn some things. Not to mention it sticks to its story plot the whole time, unlike other animes that drag on until it starts to suck.

Full metal Alchemist is epic! Edward is my all-time fave, and the characters are all great. The characters all have very detailed personalities. The show makes you laugh, and there will NEVER, EVER, EVER be an anime show that CAN BEAT Full metal Alchemist by popularity. That's the way I see it. I watch a lot of Anime, but Full metal Alchemist will always by my Number #1! No matter how many Anime shows I watch, I will never like them as much as Full metal Alchemist. Wahoo, go FMA! Go Edward!

I have watched this anime series twice now. I watch a lot of anime and some I don't even get to the end. The char's are relatable and you really feel their emotions due to the fantastic character development throughout the series. The storyline is addictive with plenty of action and humor, and to top it of it progresses to a truly epic ending. Of all the anime if watched, this is the best to date.

Fullmetal deserves to be among the top three for sure. I stand by Dragon Ball Z deserving the top spot, but the character depth combined with unquestionably unique plots and abilities transcends almost all other animes. It is shorter than anything else among the top, yet has been more popular than those in the top; the quality of the entire show is remarkable. Not to mention everybody knows that if you don't vote FMA, Roy's coming for your nine-tailed furry ass.

Seriously? 9th position? You must be kidding me. Fullmetal Alchemist is a great anime. You haven't watched it yet? You absolutely should watch it. It's awesome. A great story, strong characters, drama, action, comedy and a little romance if what you call it... Everything in the right place AND in the right quantity. It had everything which a good story requires. I was very much impressed by it. Loved it.

I am one of the biggest ANIME fans ever, I have seen 95% of all the above animes, watched from the begining to the end, all of them very good and special, all of them very different, all of them with great twist, all of them with great excitement, but I must say that even though this is so short sadly, this was the absolutely BEST ONE OF THEM! THIS IS THE BEST ONE EVER! PEOPLE YOU MUST WATCH THIS! YOU MUST! TRUST ME PEACE OUT"

It's a masterpiece, I really can't describe it otherwise, I enjoyed the first fullmetal on 2004, now with fullmetal brotherhood, my expectations were surpassed, it's even better than the original, it has a deeper story, better animation and a more memorable plot, for me this is the best anime of all time.
