The Melvins were one of the creators of grunge along with Soundgarden and Green River; they also have influenced many other grunge bands. They also made sludge metal (Well, to be fair, the roots of sludge metal can be traced back to Black Sabbath and black flag experimented with sludge metal on their "my war" album.) However, the Melvins were really the first band to establish it as a genre. The underground was full of bands playing very fast. When the Melvins slowed down their music, many of the underground bands did the same and thus sludge metal was created/considered to be a genre. Also their music is great and most of the artists on this list didn't create anything new.
