The Top Ten
1 Black Sabbath Black Sabbath were a Heavy Metal band formed in Birmingham, England in 1968 by guitarist and songwriter Tony Iommi, singer John "Ozzy" Osbourne, bassist and main lyricist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward.

The band became mainstream after improving after their debut album got panned. In 1978, Osbourne was fired and replaced with former Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio. Who went to release 2 albums before leaving in 1983, only for Osbourne to return in 1992. ...read more.

It shouldn't be even a question.
This list has a lot on good bands which DO NOT BELONG HERE! They are NWOBHM (Maiden, Priest) of Trash (Metallica, Testament) You also have Motörhead TWICE! (I love them the most, but they don't belong here "we are Motörhead, we play Rock'n'Roll!" -see?)
For me the list of big 4 of traditional Heavy Metal was always:
1. Sabbath
2. Zeppelin
3. Purple
4. Heep
You can argue about the Zep being bluesy but that is also there in Iommis play, clearly recongnizible.
Uriah Heep is not even in this list - what a shame.

Black Sabbath CREATED heavy metal. Before them there were hard rock bands, some of them very important and influential, but Sabbath played harder and heavier than any band before them (and most bands after them).

2 Iron Maiden Iron Maiden are an English Heavy Metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris. The most critically acclaimed period for the band was from 1983-1989. With vocalist Bruce Dickinson, bassist Steve Harris, lead guitarist Dave Murray, rhythm guitarist Adrian Smith, and drummer Nicko McBrain. Smith left the band in 1989 and was replaced by Janick Gers. But returned in 1999, and now the band has three guitar players. ...read more.

The big 4 of Traditional Heavy Metal should be like this:

With their first two albums, Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning reaching underground success, their third effort, Master of Puppets has since become one of the most important heavy metal albums ever, as it became the first thrash metal album to be certified platinum. 5 Savatage Savatage is an American heavy metal band founded by the brothers Jon and Criss Oliva in 1978 at Astro Skate in Tarpon Springs, Florida.

My all time favourite band. And one of the most underrated bands in the world.

There's just no band like them... And yet they're so, so underrated.

The absolute best, most underrated band in the world!

Best band ever.

6 Dio Dio was an American heavy metal band formed in 1982 and led by vocalist Ronnie James Dio, after he left Black Sabbath with intentions to form a new band with fellow former Black Sabbath member, drummer Vinny Appice.

Underrated band!

8 Deep Purple Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in Hertford in 1968. They are considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock, although their musical approach changed over the years. Originally formed as a progressive rock band, the band shifted to a heavier sound in 1970. Deep Purple, together with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, have been referred to as the "unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies". They were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as "the globe's loudest band" for a 1972 concert at London's Rainbow Theatre, and have sold over 100 million albums worldwide. ...read more.

They could have been on the same level with Sabbath or Zeppelin if not for Ritchie Blackmore. The MkII of this band was one of the greatest constellations ever to happen.

9 Rainbow Rainbow are a British rock band led by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore from 1975 to 1984 and 1993 to 1997. They were originally established with Ronnie James Dio as the lead singer and lyricist. Rainbow were ranked No. 90 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. The band has sold over 28 million albums worldwide. The band's early work primarily featured mystical lyrics with a neoclassical metal style.

This band was very important in metal evolution - they took the metal elements from the early 70s to a whole new level.

10 Motörhead Motörhead were an English heavy metal band formed in June 1975 by bassist, singer, and songwriter Ian Fraser "Lemmy" Kilmister, who was the sole constant member; guitarist and songwriter Larry Wallis; and drummer Lucas Fox. The band's harsh vocals and fast paced tempos helped inspire speed metal and thrash metal.

I think the first three picks are obvious: Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest. Those three bands have done more for metal than all other bands combined. Now, the 4th spot is more difficult. I think it belongs to Motorhead due to Lemmy's vocal influence on the genre, but Deep Purple, Saxon, Accept, and Dio are all good picks.

The Contenders
11 Metal Church Metal Church is an American heavy metal band. They originally formed in San Francisco, California in 1980 before relocating to Aberdeen, Washington the following year and briefly using the name Shrapnel.

19 Accept Accept is a German heavy metal band from the town of Solingen, originally assembled by former vocalist Udo Dirkschneider, guitarist Wolf Hoffmann and bassist Peter Baltes.

Accept definitely belongs in this version of the "Big 4" because they were a huge influence/inspiration for both thrash and speed metal.

20 Testament Testament is an American thrash metal band from Berkeley, California. Formed in 1983 under the name Legacy, the band consists of vocalist Chuck Billy, guitarists Eric Peterson and Alex Skolnick, bassist Steve DiGiorgio and drummer Gene Hoglan.

I wouldn't call Testament "traditional heavy metal", but at least they're metal.

They're thrash metal not traditional heavy metal.
