21 Mudvayne Mudvayne Mudvayne was an American heavy metal band from Peoria, Illinois formed in 1996. Originally from Bloomington, Illinois, they are known for their sonic experimentation, innovative album art, face and body paint, masks and uniforms.

Mudvayne are very talented musicians, much more talented than garbage like Linkin Park and Slipknot.

Mudvayne must be in the place 1 this band is so amazing! The vocalist the bassist is very nice I don't know why them have to stay in the 17th place. Posers System of a Down first place pfff... this list are full of crap

Mudvayne is best aternative band I've ever heard cauze they touching my dark heart in they lyrics keep hangin'4 all of yours bro you guys make so got damn rock on!

22 Bullet for My Valentine Bullet for My Valentine Bullet for My Valentine are a Welsh metalcore band from Bridgend, formed in 1998 . Bullet aren't alternative metal but are still good nonetheless

Great band but don't hear temper temper

Not alternative metal. Whiny bullcrap for scene kids whose music taste hasn't yet developed.

Why is Bullet For My Valentine so down below here?
Listen to Tears Don't Fall (Pt 1) & Bittersweet memories
They'll blow your mind away...

23 Rammstein Rammstein Rammstein is a German Neue Deutsche Härte and Industrial Metal band consisting of Till Lindemann (vocals), Richard Kruspe (guitar), Paul Landers (guitar), Oliver Riedel (electric bass), Christoph Schneider (drums) and Christian Lorenz (keyboard), that formed in 1994 in Berlin . more.

I understand why this is so low. Firstly it is German and (almost) nobody wants to listen to another language secondly it is industrial not alternate but they are still the best. - mitsurugi

Well, I will vote for them anyways since I love Rammstein, but they are mainly Industrial Metal, so I understand why they are so low on this list.

Rammstein is my favourite band. They brought me to world of metal. German language in their songs makes it 100 percent more brutal. When you translate their lyrics you will love'em twice as much. I'm not surprised that they are forbidden in Germany (for younger than 21).

I agree they are industrial metal or should fall under the NDH

25 Red Red Red is an American rock band from Nashville, Tennessee, formed in 2002. The band's lineup consists of singer Michael Barnes, guitarist Anthony Armstrong, and bassist Randy Armstrong.

I honestly think Red should deserve a spot at least in the twenties. I, and I'm sure many others too, feel that Red is under-credited too much. They are an amazing band that can go to slow and soft, to sharp an heavy. The ways in which they approach music is something new and very exciting. Each song they have created has its own unique voice, which I know I find pretty awesome. Hell, whenever I introduce Red to people who definitely express their dislike to anything related to metal ( whether it even be alternative rock), they fall in love with them and tell me how much Red's music is amazing and it's something they've never heard before. Red deserves a higher place, and I hope people soon come to realize just what an amazingly creative and talented band they are.

Are you kidding me, every single song they come out with is simply amazing. They express such emotion in their songs and sure, they're on the Christian side but they never preach. And their songs are heavy as hell at times. These guys should definitely be in the top 5 this list is a joke

Should be up there with Breaking Benjamin. It seems like no one really knows about there music, because if people did, Red would be labeled as one of the top modern bands. - X_xvBaTMaNvx_X

I had to dig through a lot of garbage to find this Jewel. If you like Breaking Benjamin, you might like RED even more.

One of the best bend on the earth.

Awesome band, should be in top 10. Go Limp Bizkit!
Keep on rollin' baby! M/

Underrated. Really great band, but Limp Bizkit is very rapcore...
I love this band ❤❤❤

27 Skillet Skillet Skillet is an American Christian rock band formed in Memphis, Tennessee in 1996 and based in the United States.

I'm sorry but no Christian rock band should be on this list. - Kfox101

Great band, great message!

If you like skillet then you're dumb

28 Dream Theatre

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure if they're alt metal or prog metal but either way they deserve to be on this list they are complex, exciting, deep and that bassist!

29 Sevendust Sevendust Sevendust is an American heavy metal quintet from Atlanta, dating back to 1994. more.

Best band to never really get mainstream during the nu metal explosion on the early 00's

They are the godfather of nu-metal

30 Mr. Bungle Mr. Bungle

Biased because they're the first cd I ever bought. Got it for the creepy clown in the cover (I was young). They blew my mind from beginning to end. Then they changed formats with each album, and continued to blow my mind.

Mile Patton's a great singer - Kfox101

Mike Patton's a great singer - Kfox101

31 Godsmack Godsmack Godsmack is an American rock band from Lawrence, Massachusetts, formed in 1995. The band is composed of founder, frontman and songwriter Sully Erna, guitarist Tony Rombola, bassist Robbie Merrill, and drummer Shannon Larkin.

Impossible. Nickelback can't be higher than any alternative metal band on this list. Godsmack should be higher in this list. By the way, how can you beat their songs like I stand Alone, Bad Magick, Whatever, and Voodoo.

They've been around for such a long time, with so many awesome songs! They deserve to be at least in the Top Ten!

Are you kidding me they should be number 1 they have so many great songs Voodoo, Whatever, awake, I standd alone just to name a few this list is a joke

They is my aesthetic! how are they not top ten!

33 White Zombie White Zombie White Zombie was an American heavy metal band that formed in 1985. Based in New York City, White Zombie was originally a noise rock band, and was known for its later heavy metal-oriented sound.

White Zombie isn't alternative metal, but White Zombie is an awesome band.

Meshuggah's line-up consists of founding members vocalist Jens Kidman and lead guitarist Fredrik Thordendal, drummer Tomas Haake, who joined in 1990, rhythm guitarist Mårten more.

This band is awesome... Math metal with prog elements the real death from Sweden

35 Anthrax Anthrax Anthrax is an American thrash metal band from New York City, formed in 1981 by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker.
36 Incubus Incubus Incubus is an American rock band from Calabasas, California. The band was formed in 1991 by vocalist Brandon Boyd, lead guitarist Mike Einziger, and drummer Jose Pasillas while enrolled in Calabasas High School and later expanded to include bassist Alex "Dirk Lance" Katunich, and Gavin "DJ Lyfe" Koppell; more.

Might not be the hardest or the most progressive of the bands on this list, but definitely a talented and innovative 5 piece group. Their recording sound and proffesionality live alone, should be appreciated also by fans of harder groups..

Deserve at least top 5 in my opinion. Incredible band, incredible lyrics and Genius musician, each and every one of them!

I love Incubus, mix-genre bands are the best! This should be at least number 10 in the list. - jonothius

For those STUPID EMOS who think that their music is really heavy just because their favorite "musicians" are dressed like satan go listen to some real hardcore songs like: "certain shade of green" by incubus.

37 Queens Of The Stone Age Queens Of The Stone Age Queens of the Stone Age is an American rock band from Palm Desert, California, United States, formed in 1996. The band's line-up includes founder Josh Homme, alongside longtime members Troy Van Leeuwen, Michael Shuman, Dean Fertita, and recent addition Jon Theodore.

QOTSA is primarily desert rock before alt metal. While they were one of the bands to get me into alt metal, they are much more bluesy and at times psychedelic in their sound. It's basically a genre that seems to be captained by Joshua Homme these days, spanning several different acts, including Eagles of Death Metal, Them Crooked Vultures, and the entirety of the Desert Sessions just to name a few. They have collaborated with several artists that span the rock and metal genre and have been consistently been putting out albums that are always fresh, but not an entire alienation to their sound which hold heavily in their own genre as well as others. So while I wouldn't particularly call them an alt metal band, they definitely deserve recognition for their influence on the genre.

38 A Perfect Circle

MJK's main project, Tool, is well deserving of its #1 spot but to have his second of similarly incredible quality so low at #44? Disappointing. This needs to be higher.

39 Slayer Slayer more.
40 Staind Staind Staind was a heavy metal band formed in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1995. more.

I can't believe I had to add this in the list. Better than sod.

Maybe better than the grass substitute (sod) but not greater than the band
