Best American Male Racehorses

The Top Ten
1 Secretatiat

Triple Crown winner. Holds records for Kentucky Derby & Belmont, Man of War, Malboro (no longer a stakes race) his Preakness record has been equalled, but not surpassed. No other horse holds these records and these have stood for 36 years... and counting.

Secretariat is the best one by far not only did he win the triple crown but he did not break down... Don't get me wrong Barbaro was a good race horse but not anything like Secretariat!

Decent horse. But his name was spelled wrong. It is spelled SECRETARIAT.

9 Man o' War Man o' War was an American Thoroughbred who is widely considered one of the greatest racehorses of all time. Several sports publications including The Blood-Horse, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, and the Associated Press voted Man o' War as the outstanding horse of the 20th century.

The best by a short margin. Only including males, Secretariat would be second but only Man o' War could surpass the great filly Ruffian. I know Secretariat faced better rivals but let's take a look at that: He raced Sham only 4 times. In their first meeting the Wood Memorial, Secretariat had an abscess in his mouth, and finished a distant third, way behind the winner Anglelight and Sham, a neck behind in second. The fourth place horse was right at Secretariat's neck. Secretariat beat Sham in both the Derby and the Preakness by 2 1/2 lengths. In the Belmont, Sham had a quarter crack, yet still stayed with Secretariat for the first half of the race. Then he faded and finished last, while Secretariat blew away the 3 allowance horses to win by 31 lengths in world record time. In a later race, the Woodward he was destroyed by the talented Prove Out. He was defeated in the Whitney by the decent Onion also. Not so impressive is it. His best win was when he defeated a great field, including ...more

Pity he was raced when not at his best.
