23 KISS KISS Kiss is an American hard rock band formed in New York City in January 1973 by Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and the band's original manager, Lew Linet.

Critics slander KISS due to their onstage antics but fail to realise that any band that can survive for over 40 years with many lineup changes and sell over 100 million albums and pack out arenas all around the world must have had at least some musical talent! Right? In fact, not only did kiss have more prowess with their instruments than the critics give them, they were an incredibly diverse band displaying many versions of rock including hard rock, glam rock, heavy metal and they even had a go at disco, which I understand is not rock but I am too lazy to go back and change my comment. The fact that KISS are not higher on this list disappoints me. If there were to be a Mount Rushmore of American rock bands, in my opinion, it would be the Eagles, Van Halen, KISS and Aerosmith. They should place higher than Guns and Roses, the Doors and Nirvana simply due to the longevity and influence on many people in America and around the world, which has helped the creation of the most loyal fan ...more

KISS is the greatest Rock band and my personal favorite. Their music is great and having the most gold records sold in America yeah they belong higher on the list. On a music level they are underrated. They have influenced many rock bands. Even Johnny Depp was in a KISS tribute band. I love all Line Ups and all albums. Critics never got it. Radio never got it. The KISS ARMY GOT IT! We Are One and we will SHOUT IT OUT LOUD as we ROCK AND ROLL ALL NITE AND PARTY EVERYDAY! Here's to KISS 40 years and counting!

KISS are the best band in America no wonder they have more gold records than any other band they laid the groundwork for the arena rock and glam metal that dominated the 80s with anthems, ballads and spectacular shows and performances doesn't matter if it is the party rock/glam metal KISS of the 70s and the 80s or the heavy metal KISS of the 90s KISS is the best band in the USA

Best band in the entire World, hands down! :)
They are very influential and huge to this day. :)
Even though the original line up was the best and irreplaceable,KISS is still the best and my favorite.Never get bored watching their concerts and listening to their songs, especially live! :)
Gene Simmons,Paul Stanley,Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. You want the best, you got the best the best, the hottest band in the World,KISS!
ROCK ON!

25 Soundgarden Soundgarden Soundgarden is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984 by singer and rhythm guitarist Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto.

"American Zeppelin" or "Beatles meet Sabbath". Black Hole Sun is a masterpiece. -Rob

Grunge would've never been the same without Chris Cornell. - naFrovivuS

So underrated, they are lyricly genius. Not to mention Chris Cornell's powerful voice

26 Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band The E Street Band is an American rock band, and has been musician Bruce Springsteen's primary backing band since 1972. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.

They should be number one, the boss and his boys. GREATEST BAND EVER

How is this not already on the list

27 Journey Journey Journey is an American rock band that formed in San Francisco in 1973, composed of former members of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch.

While many bands sold records, Journey rules the stadiums. No other band drew such huge crowds and no other band has such great musicians. Critics hate Journey because they're sentimental... Fans are STILL calling for a Steve Perry reunion. Journey all the way!

I only band that ever came close to the British. I think Journey defines the american dream.

Speaking of British, have a listen to the fantastic female led Harwood Drive and their new single which they have placed on you tube. It's called Tonight and its great.

They always perform around the world today. They should be on the top spot.

In 1976, the band's original lineup was Tom Petty as the lead singer and guitar player, Mike Campbell as the lead guitarist, Ron Blair on bass, Stan Lynch on drums, and Benmont Tench on keyboards.

One of the all-time best American rock bands! Belongs in at least the top ten, if not five. All of their songs and albums are incredible.

29 The Allman Brothers Band The Allman Brothers Band The Allman Brothers Band was an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969 by brothers Duane Allman and Gregg Allman, as well as Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson.

Musically the most interesting and talented, combing all the great traditions of American music, blues, jazz, country, rock...

33 The Velvet Underground The Velvet Underground The Velvet Underground was an American rock band, active between 1964 and 1973, formed in New York City.

Nothing in modern music would be what it is now without the Velvet Underground. So influential on so many levels. Should be in the top 5.

Should be third after the Beach Boys and the Doors.

What a joke that one of the most influencial bands of all time ranks #22 on this list.

Should be V.U. and R.E.M. at # 1 and # 2 my friends.

34 The Ramones The Ramones The Ramones were an American punk rock band that formed in the New York City neighborhood of Forest Hills, Queens, in 1974. They are often cited as the first band to define the punk rock sound.

Influenced half of the bands above them. A travesty, albeit, not a surprising one, that they are not recognized more.

They should be number one, you guys are all wet with your "Aerosmith." Obviosly you forget that terrible asteroid song. The Ramones were America's greasy Beatles, and don't you forget it.

Founders of one of the bests genres of music. If they did something it was automatically punk.

35 Steely Dan Steely Dan

My two favorite American Bands are Aerosmith and Steely Dan. How was Steely Dan not on the list til now?!

Awesome musicianship! Great guitar & vocals. They need to be in top 10!

Absolute joke that they aren't even in the Top 1, never mind the top 10

39 Motley Crue Motley Crue Mötley Crüe was an American metal band formed in Los Angeles, California on January 17, 1981. The group was founded by bassist Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee, lead vocalist Vince Neil and lead guitarist Mick Mars.

If you are a child of the 80s, rock music is what MTV played. On that basis, this is the perfect rock band. Individually, only one of the players is truly elite (Lee). But their concerts were worth every penny, and their exploits were pure legend. The critics can hate all they like, but the Crue keeps laughing all the way to the bank.

This band is garbage. If you want good music listen to Breaking Benjamin.

Maybe not #1 but defiantly top 10. So how come down here at 99!

Motley crue should be at least in the top 50 best amnerican bands

40 Cheap Trick Cheap Trick Cheap Trick is an American rock band from Rockford, Illinois, formed in 1973. As of 2010, the band currently consists of Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, Tom Petersson and Daxx Nielsen.

They have to be #1 in the best AMERICAN R&R band. That puts "The Who" in the English category and maybe at the top of the world. First of all 39 years together. The most versatile lead singer (Robin Zander) in any current or past R&R band. Can sing anything by anyone and make it better. Their latest album (Bang, Crazy) should be Rock"s album of the year. Rick Nielsen...as a writer and guitar player...what can't he do?

If we are talking American ROCK bands, Cheap Trick has to sit near the top. Length of career, amount of classic songs, influence, and awesomeness all add up to a lofty position. And still making music worth hearing, unlike 99% of bands ( I won't name names ) of a similar vintage.

So much better than Kiss - and countless other bands - it's ridiculous, and yet never touted as such. Well, I'm touting them here - they are one of the all time greats and still capable of supercharging your nervous system. Respect and love.

The best now and always. Rick, Robin, Tom and BUN E. forever.
