Top 10 Best Books for Kids

The Top Ten
1 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - J.K. Rowling

I read the first three books a number of years ago (I stopped after that) and I loved them all. Neither of the sequel books were as fun to read as this one was, though. I guess it was especially wondrous the first time around.

I am not voting because I like Harry Potter, but am voting for my favorite book, "Number the Stars." This is one of the best books you will ever read. If you haven't heard of it, just read it, and you will fall in love with the book,

Harry Potter is the best series EVER. Hermione isn't girly and completely breaks the "girls are dumb" stereotype. And once kids start, they NEVER stop. That's how good they are.

2 Green Eggs and Ham - Dr. Seuss

If you grew up having never read this (or any Dr. Seuss book) you missed out. Always a fun time reading these.

Every kid should read this book at least once, it's great!

Yes, it's a very great story, everyone should know this!

3 The Outsiders - S. E. Hinton

This is a little bit more of a young adult book, but it IS amazing for kids who feel like they aren't challenged when it comes to books!

Read this in public school. First book I ever HAD to read that I enjoyed.

Our school had to read it, I liked the book and the movie.

4 Charlotte's Web - E. B. White

It literally should be first place! The movie, and the book are really touching especially at the end! Shows true friendship!

I have read this book so many times I remember what happens at what time. This book is such a great children's novel.

5 A Series of Unfortunate Events - Lemony Snicket

Absolutely, utterly not! Series of Unfortunate Events was one of the worst books I've ever come across! My entire class LOVE it, and force it down my throat.

I hate Mr. Snicket's (that's not even his name) writing style...constantly interrupting the natural flow of the story with his horrible narrating and explaining 'big words (note the sarcasm).' News flash: I knew what ALL of them meant. I mean, it worked for the Book Thief, but not this.

I liked the premise. Orphanened children, completely miserable, find out about their creepy uncle who attempts to marry the oldest to get their fortune - now that's my kind of story! But, alas, Snicket ruined that as well. What could have been a wonderful book was turned into a bland, overrated, piece of mindless garbage that belongs nowhere near my perfect, award-winning bookshelf...it belongs in the trash can right next to it (who puts a trash can by a bookshelf?).

What I hated most of all, though, were the characters. Usually, in a book, the thing that makes it the hardest to leave were the characters - my friends, my rescuers from the prison known as reality, who stick by my side no matter what. The Baudeleirs, on the other hand are those annoying little people who take absolutely no notice of you at all, copy off your homework, and constantly harass you during class by talking non-stop...you know those ones (I certainly do). The ones you can't wait to be away from. They had very limited personality and were completely 2-dimensional. Think about the great Harry Potter, and what is revealed to us in the span of those 7 books! Characters from the Heroes of Olympus series were great! But the Series of Unfortunate Events? Who are they, anyway? They're so forgettable! I don't remember their names even! Was it Rose? Lavender? Something like that. And who exactly was the boy? Was there even a boy? And then there's the baby...yeah, her...what was her name again?

In conclusion, I hated this. No doubt... more

6 The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - C.S. Lewis

A fantastic book written by a fantastic author. This is my 2nd favorite book.

It's magical in every sense of the word. I loved this book as a kid.

Amazing book. The details are fantastic.

7 Diary of a Wimpy Kid - Jeff Kinney

It shouldn't be in the top 5 or 10, but it's okay if it can be in the contenders.

Good book, but I think Harry Potter is better.

My brother loves this silly book series.

8 The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

I graduated high school before this entered the curriculum so I just read it for fun and I was pleasantly surprised. Then out came the movie.

May the odds be ever in your favour.

9 The Tale of Despereaux - Kate DiCamillo

Don't hate me, but I thought this sucked, the movie was even worse.

10 The Boy in the Striped Pajamas - John Boyne

I want to read this book, but I don't want to break my heart.

What kid would want to read this book? This book is sad!

This book is sad but it's an incredible read.

The Newcomers

? The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel - Michael Scott
? Fablehaven - Brandon Mull
The Contenders

23 Winnie the Pooh - A. A. Milne
24 The Tale of Peter Rabbit - Beatrix Potter
25 The Three Railway Engines - W. Awdry

I am supried it's only #26. This book teaches kids various lessons. Laziness can come with serious consequences (Come out, Henry!) No matter how old or disabled you are, you can still accomplish great things in life (Edward's day out, Edward helps out), and Teamwork is always key to large things (Edward, Gordon, and Henry)

The very 1st Railway Series book that introduces Edward Gordon and Henry
