Crime isn't actually that bad. There are about 1,050 violent crimes for every 100,000 residents, 100 murders, and 1,750 property crimes. Keep in mind that it is highly commercial, so you have people coming in and out, who occasionally commit crimes. All cities have that, but East St. Louis and other mostly commercial suburbs are like that too. After that, the only outstandingly terrible statistic is murder, but that is almost entirely gang related. The next time you read something about how dangerous East St. Louis is, think about this.
