WonkeyDude98 Analysis: Hotline Bling

WonkeyDude98
Shoutout to Martinglez for the suggestion, I appreciate your help.

When I think Drake, I don't think rap (well Forever was good, but Eminem crushed Drake so hard it's not really a good Drake song), I think R&B. But when he released Hotline Bling, it was Drake's first R&B song I had actively negative feelings about. I liked it at first, but after thorough analysis it's hard to find good things about it.

The beat is actually surprisingly good. This is despite it sounding like DJ Mustard tried to replicate the Wii Shop Channel theme then lower it by 15 decibels. And I hate DJ Mustard.

We start with this: "You used to call me on my cell phone/Late night when you need my love/Call me on my cell phone/Late night when you need my love/And I know when that hotline bling/That can only mean one thing/I know when that hotline bling/That can only mean one thing". So Drake says that this girl used to call him to, if you know what I mean, get him up. ;-). She was the only one that called him, and as a result the hotline has been quiet.

Now we get to the verse: "Ever since I left the city, you/Got a reputation for yourself now/Everybody knows and I feel left out/Girl you got me down, you got me stressed out/'Cause ever since I left the city, you/Started wearing less and goin' out more/Glasses of champagne out on the dance floor/Hangin' with some girls I've never seen before".

Dude, https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yPFjVy87HJM (go to 9:10 mark for what I'm talking about). This isn't the last time that link will apply. I've heard condescending and I've heard controlling. But both? Why? What thinks you have the right to say whether a girl should wear less clothes and make new friends? I'd be more on Drake's side...if we heard her side of this story and he wasn't out touring all over the world. Also, you're mad that she can afford champagne. Bro, no. One more thing: you are sad because she gave herself a reputation because you were away for years? OH NO!!!!!! This is starting to remind me of Started From The Bottom: Drake's acting spoiled and whiny again.

Then the second verse: "Ever since I left the city, you, you, you/You and me we just don't get along/You make me feel like I did you wrong/Going places where you don't belong/Ever since I left the city, you/You got exactly what you asked for/Running out of pages in your passport/Hanging with some girls I've never seen before".

Refer to the link. Maybe you did do her wrong, Drake. Also you have no right to say whether she can go places or not. Also, you're frustrated because she's going what she wants and going to a bunch of places? Ugh, screw it, get to the bridge.

"These days, all I do is/Wonder if you bendin' over backwards for someone else/Wonder if you're rollin' up a backwoods for someone else/Doing things I taught you, gettin' nasty for someone else/You don't need no one else, you don't need nobody else, no/Why you never alone/Why you always touching road/Used to always stay at home, be a good girl/You was in a zone, yeah/You should just be yourself/Right now, you're someone else"

*long pause* No, imma do it, I just...need a minute.

You know, I never thought Drake could sink to this level of delusionally entitled and controlling. You say that what is bothering you is the girl is hitting up other guys while you were gone for several years. Do you have any idea how that sounds? You know what, I'm done, let's wrap this up.

Come to think of it, I should have done an analysis for All About That Bass and a rage for this one. I give this a half star out of 5. That's for the beat alone. I'm WonkeyDude98, signing out.

Good one - Martinglez

I thought about the Wii shop theme too! - RalphBob

I know I'm late, but I don't reckon the beat to this song sounds like a DJ Mustard song, because it actually has a beat. - visitor

Barely. It sounds like automated home music, with one light chord playing per time. - WonkeyDude98

Mustard on the beat hoe
Call me on my cellphone late night when you need my love

Me: Zzzz... - bobbythebrony

I love the beat though. It's like gangster elevator music. - visitor

Wii is awesome and the greatest gaming console of all tine - AlphaQ

So. Is it just me or do I think that Drake is more of a Pop/R&B than a Rap guy? - AlphaQ
