45 Dirk Hamilton
46 John Mayer John Mayer

John Mayer is legendary. His lyrics are excellent and his guitar skills are right up there with the best. Having said that, John Mayer is not folk rock.

Agreed. Mayer is probably talented enough to play any venue he chooses, but I consider him mostly pop.

He might be a great guitarist, but his lyrics are sappy and he seems to really suck as a person.

Just because some one plays an acoustic guitar doesn't make him folk.

48 Matthew and the Atlas

50 The Head and the Heart

The head and the heart is the best folk band on the planet. Their music is beautiful while being relatable; it is instrumentally pleasing while the lyrics are perfect. The best sound ever to enter my ears.

Unique style with beautiful lyrics

54 Donovan

He's really underrated and not really well known. Listen to his songs they're really good melodic folk.

55 Fotheringay
56 Andrew Jackson Jihad
57 Horslips
58 Pentangle
59 Bert Jansch Bert Jansch

Utter genius. Current music would not be what it is without him. THE inspiration to every great guitarist since.

60 Love

Love's classic line-up marks no downs in their short life span, their debut, "Love" is simple, raw, Garage Folk-Rock album, with a couple of mellow acoustic tunes, in the second album, "the Capo" the band advances towards a more baroque sound, adding winds and keyboards, leaving behind the simplicity of their debut, but not the quality of their melodies, then comes their master-piece, "Forever Changes", one of the best albums of all times, listen to it by yourself.
After this the band tore apart and Arthur Lee kept the name, but never reached the quality of the early years.

How are Love ranked at 55? Bizzare. So ahead of their time in the mid sixties, only Arthur Lee's stubborn refusal to tour held them back.
