22 Ministry Ministry Ministry is an American industrial metal band founded by lead singer and only original member Al Jourgensen in 1981. Originally a new wave synthpop outfit, Ministry changed its style to industrial metal in the mid-1980s.

One of the most underrated bands of all time.

I wouldn't consider them goth, but their early synthpop tunes have large ties with the genre. Plus, most goths like them anyway, regardless of genre.

23 Inkubus Sukkubus

This is the best band ever. The first time I ran across them was by mistake well a lot of my new fave have been by mistake. They have been the best mistake ever.

Respect:)beautiful dark romantic which metal,

Best Pagan Goth band on the planet

24 The Cult The Cult The Cult are a British rock band formed in 1983. Before settling on their current moniker in January 1984, the band performed under the names Southern Death Cult and Death Cult.

Like the Sisters they weren't a goth band, the label came later, the Cult were a straight up rock band, and a damn good one at that. I saw them in 87 and 89, excellent band.

25 Epica Epica Epica is a Dutch symphonic metal band, founded by guitarist and vocalist Mark Jansen after his departure from After Forever.

Should be much higher on the list!

Epica deserves a higher place on this scale!

Epica belongs at the top of this list

Some of the best compositions. Have played with Nightwish and Kamelot.
The keyboard solos, and the haunting dark guitars. Especially on Phantom Agony, and on Fools of Damnation.
Simone has a very haunting voice too. And Arien does some of the best range of drumming, heavy blast beats and transitions through slower heavy patterns. Highlighting the keyboard melodies and atmospheres as well as the orchestrations. Highlighting the classical history of style.

26 Corpus Delicti

Because they actually ARE goth, unlike E.G. nightwish or evanescence... Also, because they recorded many great and valuable trancks. Valuable for the goth rock history. As simple as this.

27 Alice Cooper Alice Cooper Alice Cooper was an American rock band formed in Phoenix, Arizona in 1964. The band consisted of lead singer Vince Furnier, Glen Buxton, Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway, and Neal Smith.

This man is considered the king of theatrical rock and brought theatrics into music. He should be number one on this list because he started it all.

I love him so much, but his music isn't gothic rock, even though he influenced it!

WHAT KIND OFF LISE IS THIS?! HE SHOULD BE MORE HIGHER ON THE LIST songs like I love the dead, poison, cold ethyl, Killer album and heaps of other ones that I'll probably gonna keep going till next year

28 Mephisto Walz

Early 90s Goth rock that flew under the radar. They deserve a hell of a lot more love, because together with Dead Can Dance, helped build and shape future female led Goth rock bands.

29 The Birthday Party

Overshadowed by his more recent solo mutterings, Nick Cave's seminal band was the maniacal The Birthday Party. The late great guitarist, Rowland S. Howard's blistering aural response to Cave's black, bleak, and biblically apocalyptic lyrics is no easy feat for the first time listener. Murder Ballads to make Johnny Cash weep, this band of too talented to stay together for too long bevy of miscreants bombarded Britain from their native Australia in the early 80s and kicked the teeth (literally and figuratively), of a post punk audience that needed a new supply of vicious abuse hurled their way before the record companies signed and polished up their old heroes for mass consumption. The Birthday Party went out in flames in order to avoid the trap and as a result, their small musical output is to this day unsullied and just as raw as when it was created. Influencing many, those artists lucky to have connections to them include Lydia Lunch, Jim "Foetus" Thirlwell, Virgin Prunes, Marc ...more

This system is utterly flawed. How are The Birthday Party at 82?

This band invented goth rock in the late 70s. Everyone has simply followed their blueprint. Without Nick Cave and Rolland Howard the genre wouldn't exist!

30 Draconian Incubus
31 Sex Gang Children

Yes! Saraband for dead lovers and skin must be my fave.

One of my favourites. Rarely do bands have so many good songs and be this exotic.

Andi Sex Gang and his followers were the first to be described as "goths"!

32 Paradise Lost Paradise Lost Paradise Lost are a gothic metal band that formed in 1988 in Halifax, England and are considered by some to be one of the pioneers of the death/doom genre and of the gothic metal genre.

Simply the greatest! These guys have never made the same album twice. Always evolving & challenging the listener. The creators of gothic metal & sadly underrated.

One of the first and best GOTH METAL bands. Listen to "Icon"!

Seriously. This is just AWESOME.

33 The Mission UK

This band is great but bands like Marilyn Manson, The Rasmus, Evanescence etc shouldn't even be here. You guys do not know Goth. You guys do not know emo either, most of you labelling Marilyn Manson "Goth" or "emo" really need to do some research.

Wow, shows how much the readers of this blog know. The Mission have just redefined Goth with their latest album (Another Fall From Grace), which is much, much darker and disturbing than anything the Sisters ever did. Effing stupendously good goth rock act, you're not a true goth if you've not got at least one of their albums in your collection. A true talent, and amazing live, more like a life changing religious experience than a gig. Phenomenally good. Check 'em out and find out what you're missing, not much you can go wrong with apart from Masque.

Message to the Evanescence fans : please listen first five Mission Uk albums and later we talk again what is Gothic Rock. (i can't believe Evanescence on the top)

Excellent! Excellent!

34 Dead Can Dance

How is Dead Can Dance not higher? I know they're an older band, but 'Toward the Within' is a seminal album in the Goth genre. I suppose an argument could be made that the band was not 'rock enough'. But without Dead Can Dance, you would not have seen the growth of other female led Goth bands in my opinion.

Outstanding band, the greatest simply another class of music

Their songs bring me to the Space!

35 Lycia

The atmosphere this band manages to create is the essence of gothic music. Period.

36 Southern Death Cult

VERY different to Death Cult, even though the vocalist is the same person. The self-titled compilation album shows very well what gothic rock really is. I wouldn't expect them to be on the top 10, but Evanescence, HIM, Nightwish, and Marilyn Manson don't deserve to be on this list at all.

37 Cauda Pavonis

These guys are a strong resurgence of what is Goth. There is modern Goth and it certainly isn't HIM or Evanescence, It's Cauda Pavonis.

Truly carrying the flag for dark romantics. Go listen to their stuff and vote!

38 The Naked and the Dead
39 Nosferatu

The REAL DEAL. NO masquerading as Post Punk or whatever the current hip buzzword is. NOSFERATU have been at the forefront of Gothic Rock for a quarter of a century.

Nosferatu is just absolutley amazing. Crysania is my favorite song by them. Their music has sort of the creepy and eerie sound to it, that I happen to just adore!

Great band, should be higher.
