Top 10 Best Green Day Songs

You know what they say: Green Day is not just a band, it's a way of life. For over 30 years, these punk rock legends have been rocking our world with their awesome songs that make us feel alive, angry, and inspired. They have never been afraid to speak their mind, challenge the status quo, and make some noise. They are the voice of our generation, and we love them for it.

That's why we asked you to help us pick the top Green Day songs ever. These songs are not just hits, they are classics. They are the songs that define Green Day's style, spirit, and legacy. From their raw and rebellious beginnings with "Longview" and "Basket Case" to their epic and explosive operas like "American Idiot" and "21 Guns", this list has it all.
The Top Ten
1 Boulevard of Broken Dreams

Great song, I simply love it. I listen to it daily! It's epic, really. It's one of the best rock songs I have heard in my life!

I never really got into Green Day until I heard "Basket Case" for the first time three years ago. I was instantly captivated by their style and I was begging for more. This was the next song I turned to and, to be honest, I didn't like it that much.

Then Christmas came around. I heard this song while walking around at night to see my neighbors' lights. An American flag caught my eye and I pictured Green Day playing right in front of me with a snowman. Don't ask me why. But ever since, this has been my favorite Green Day song of all time because it takes me back to that moment.

Weird story, I know. Hope it inspires.

2 Basket Case

The live performance of this song on Letterman is what convinced me to become a guitarist. It will forever be the greatest Green Day song. The lyrics are also incredibly relatable for anyone who suffers from anxiety and depression. A perfect punk rock anthem.

I bet 90 percent of the people who voted for Boulevard of Broken Dreams haven't even heard of Dookie. Can we PLEASE get some classics like Longview, Brain Stew, and Hitchin' a Ride in the top 5, or at least the top 10? This song tops them all. It's classic Green Day all the way. It's fast-paced, exciting, and full of energy. Did they play Boulevard of Broken Dreams at the Green Day induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? No, because even they know this song tops it by a long shot!

3 Jesus of Suburbia

One of the best songs of all time, this track really speaks to the teenage population suffering from depressing lives. The song describes the life of an adolescent named Jesus, who is so revered in teenage society that he might as well be a god. However, he leads a very hedonistic lifestyle, filled with sex, drugs, alcohol, and graffiti. His mother tells him he needs to stop, but he calls her pathetic. When he finds out his girlfriend has dumped him, he leaves town, but not before placing a handprint (made of his own blood) on a bathroom wall. The song ends with a loud, blaring "I don't care!" This song powerfully depicts the animalistic lifestyle that leads many teenagers to shame and sadness.

4 Holiday

I think this is your ideal, typical Green Day song. It's what got me into them and it feels like a throwback to their original punk ways before selling out. While being more punk in nature, this song has everything one would want to satisfy their musical taste. It's got a killer riff, stunning vocals, a perfect bass solo, and a phenomenal chorus. The message of this song is even more extraordinary, as it stands out among Green Day's love songs. It's an anti-war anthem that everyone can relate to. It's still one of their catchiest songs to date!

5 Wake Me Up When September Ends

Okay, this song is amazing. It has so many feelings in it. You can feel it in Billie's voice. He even cried while performing this song, which shows how much this song means to him. For those who don't know, this song is about his dad, who died from cancer when Billie was 10. There's a famous story, but I don't know if it's true. The story goes that Billie, at his dad's funeral, couldn't handle it and ran back home crying. His mom followed him, and when she asked him to open the locked door, he just said, Wake me up when September ends (his dad died on the 16th of September). What I know for sure is that this song is amazing and that it's about Billie's dad, who died from cancer. Lots of support to Billie. And for people who make jokes about this song, it isn't funny at all. Imagine if you had lost a parent at 10. It isn't funny now, huh? Stop the jokes.

6 American Idiot

Without a doubt, the most well-known Green Day song is American Idiot. According to many, it is the song that propelled Green Day to superstardom at the turn of the century. The song essentially mocks American culture, its pigheadedness, its ignorance, and everything else. It has such a great rhythm, created by great guitar playing. What will likely stay in our minds the most, however, is the video featuring a large American flag with green stripes melting.

Despite its popularity, I believe the song's magic still cannot compare with the top five. The band's best album was named after the song.

7 21 Guns

"21 Guns" was the first Green Day song I ever heard. It's not my favorite, and you'll be surprised why I rank it first, but every time I listen to it, I experience an indescribable feeling. The first time I heard it, I was so amazed by Billie that I fell "in love" not just with him but with Green Day as well. I immediately began researching information about Green Day. Now, I know everything about them and even have a fandom account.

Personally, my favorite song is "Holiday," but "21 Guns" deserves the top spot because it's a beautiful song, both in its original and Broadway versions. This song takes me back to January 21, 2014, the day I first listened to Green Day. I was so amazed that I watched the entire video. While I haven't been a fan for a long time, you can't say I don't love Green Day as much as you do. You can't measure the love I have for them, and I can assure you, it's immense. Thank you, Green Day. I love you. And thank you, "21 Guns," for being my gateway to Green Day and making me a proud fan.

8 Longview

One of the best punk songs ever. Its dynamics are awesome. The chorus is really heart-grabbing. And the bridge - I've got no motivation - is great. Just compare the lyrics with the name! Does it strike you?

This is the song that made Green Day famous. It's the "Teen Spirit" of Green Day. It goes from a quiet, deep bass line to a loud, high guitar riff - very cool. It should definitely be above "Basket Case" for starters, because this is the best song on Dookie. And it should be above all the other songs, because Dookie is the best album by Green Day.

9 Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)

I understand that the songs above this are catchy, but this song represents where Green Day came from and the impact they've made. If you had the honor of graduating since this song was released, then you have heard this played at your reception. I've been a lifelong Green Day fan, and when I think of Green Day, this is the song that strikes me as one of the greatest of all time. I love the entire American Idiot album, which is possibly one of the best albums of all time. But this song - this IS Green Day.

10 When I Come Around

I was at a Green Day concert with my sister, and this was one of the songs where most people just had a "what is this?" face, while the rest screamed "When I Come Around." One of the best concert moments, apart from the "DIE, DIE, DIE" part of Metallica's Creeping Death.

Wow, there must be a lot of young people commenting and voting on these songs. When I Come Around was an epic '90s anthem. Green Day had a stellar career pre-American Idiot for all of you who don't know. It's an amazing song that deserves to be much higher!

Amazing song. Makes me think about my friends and buddies. Just pure awesomeness: the riff and the lyrics. The bass is also pretty awesome, and Tre does a great job with a few drum fills. My all-time Green Day favorite. Cheers me up anytime.

The Contenders
11 Welcome to Paradise

So good it had to come back in another album. Warner sure knew they would be missing out on this brilliant song if they didn't buy the rights for it at the time. It's fast and strong, without hurting us. It seems to me like it compiles 90% of Green Day's aura and crams it all into this 3-minute song.

Best song, man! This song rocks everybody. It's the best on the Dookie CD and even much better than Basket Case, Long View, She, and their ever-worst song, When I Come Around, that I've ever listened to. Man, please vote this song up.

12 Brain Stew

This song is kick-ass with its sister song, Jaded. The whole feeling of the song from start to finish gets you pumped, and then Jaded comes in and just kicks you in the balls. I also find it quite funny that Billy has a lisp in this song, as some lyrics he says funny (e.g., I'm having trouble trying to sleep).

Reminds me of the times I can't sleep because I'm overthinking and my brain is stewed with all the pressure I feel. Things I should have done but didn't... Yeah, I'm not an insomniac. That's why I connect it just with the "lack of enthusiasm" in my life. And you know, it perfectly fits. My favorite song.

13 Homecoming

When I started listening to Green Day, this song used to be my favorite one. I mean, come on, I can't understand why people just don't love it. I adore it more than anything. The lyrics, the rhythm, the fact that they're all singing (except for Jason, but he wasn't an official member of the band back then) - the passion, even the length of the song, is just impressive. Even though it's usually tiring to listen to a 10-minute song, this one is so incredible! It is literally over before you can even understand it began.

I remember how I always melted during the last part, where Billie sings "Here they come marching down the street." I don't even know what's so different about that part, but I just love Billie's voice in it. Also, this song LIVE is just incredible! It's so energetic, and it's so unfair that it's so underrated!

14 Whatsername

The build of this song is incredible. It starts off beautiful and mellow with incredible mini instrumental sections. The lyrics are amazing, and it builds up into a powerhouse of heavy guitars, emotional vocals, and passionate singing.

Okay, this song makes me cry. It's so emotional, and the way Billie sings makes it even sadder. I don't know if it's the song, the album, or just the memories this song brings, but it makes me cry. I always tear up at the part:

"Remember, whatever, it seems like forever ago (2x)
The regrets are useless, she's in my head I must confess,
The regrets are useless, she's in my head from so long ago, go (4x)
Go (5x)

Remember in the darkest night, if my memory serves me right,
I'll never turn back time, forgetting you but not the time..."

15 Hitchin' a Ride

In most Top 10 lists, it's all American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. Don't get me wrong, those two albums are great, especially American Idiot. However, you just can't put seven songs from American Idiot in the top 10. You are leaving behind classics like Minority, Hitchin' a Ride, Welcome to Paradise, Brain Stew, and Longview.

The American Idiot album was good, but the older Green Day music was amazing. Songs like Hitchin' a Ride, along with Welcome to Paradise, Long View, and Brain Stew, are why we all love Green Day. The more punk stuff is their best stuff.

16 Minority

I could never choose a favorite song. Green Day doesn't have a "best song". All of their songs are simply amazing and so different that you can't compare them and can't pick a favorite.

It makes me laugh how most of the songs people vote for are from "American Idiot" or "21st Century Breakdown." Even though I just said all their songs are amazing, I believe that neither "American Idiot" nor "21st Century Breakdown" are their best albums. I bet 80% of the people voting here only know "Boulevard of Broken Dreams."

They only know that one song because it actually gets played on the radio. And "Basket Case" because it was so popular.

But does anyone here know Green Day songs like "Road to Acceptance," "Only of You," "At the Library," "Stuart and the Ave," etc.?

I bet no one does.

Come on, people, check out ALL of their songs before you start voting.

You're not a real fan if you don't know their older songs.

This is today's society.

17 21st Century Breakdown

Sharing the name with the album from which it came, it isn't hard to believe that this song sums up the entire album - my personal favorite, no doubt. It tells the amazing story of Gloria and Christian. To me, this song also encapsulates the century, hence its name. Every time I watch the music video or simply listen to it, I feel like time is passing before my eyes. This song affects me in a way I can't entirely explain. The whole album is far better than the stuff on the radio today.

This song is awesome! It can make up the whole album in just a few minutes and sums up the entire album. I can't stop listening to it. It reminds me of my old friends. We used to dance to the tune of this song. This song is the trademark of our group and one of Green Day's best songs ever!

18 East Jesus Nowhere

I would certainly agree that this song should be in at least the top five. The musicgasm that you get can't be compared to any of the others. With a motivating riff and a chorus that makes you burst with anger, this song is a masterpiece.

This one is one of their best and deserves a higher ranking. Come on, people, this is not ahead of 21 Guns. Just listen to the opening of the song, and you will realize why it is so great. East Jesus Nowhere rocks!

I love this song so much! I didn't even know it before I got the album, but now it's one of my favorites. This should at least be in the top ten. It's a really energetic, awesome song.

19 She

20th? Seriously? Dear God, this song is underrated. I mean, yes, Green Day has a lot of good songs, but this one belongs somewhere in the top 10 at least. Just listen to the chorus. How does that not put you in a better mood? This song makes me smile and want to act like a crazy teenager again. How many other songs from any band can say the same?

This song is criminally underrated. I can't believe it's only at #20, but really, that's more indicative of how many amazing songs Green Day has than it is of this song being mediocre. Still, I think this should be in the top 10 at the very least. It puts me in a better mood than any other Green Day song.

20 Know Your Enemy

I will be honest. When I first listened to this song, I did not pay enough attention to the lyrics. I was surprised when I heard that it had won an award for deep and meaningful lyrics. However, if you listen to it closely, its greatness becomes evident. Not only does it have a great rhythm, but it also sends a strong warning to people to avoid corruption and violence in the world, labeling them as the "enemy." Billie Joe Armstrong almost demands the question from the listener, "Do you know the enemy?" This indicates that it is extremely important to be aware of such evils in the world.

21 Give Me Novacaine / She's a Rebel

I could never in my life find a song that can rival this. Green Day is at their finest. I am and will forever be a fan because of this song, if nothing else. I love them, I love this song - this song is me! Truly a work of art. Beautiful! Truly damn beautiful.

Give Me Novacaine for me is kind of like a metaphor. I mean, it feels like he's trying to escape depression or something, you know? And Novacaine is like happiness. And that he's suffering the pain of depression.

This song got me through a really bad breakup. With its soothing yet powerful tone and lyrics, and its deeply relatable lyrics, it is hands down the best song by Green Day.

22 Geek Stink Breath

This song is off the underrated Insomniac, and of course, a song from American Idiot is number one. Not that American Idiot is a bad album, but Geek Stink Breath and Insomniac blow Boulevard and American Idiot away. My dreams were shattered when I heard that song. But Geek Stink Breath is amazing and should be much higher.

How? HOW? This song is unbelievable, and it's 19th? This song has got the greatest guitar riffs in the history of the world! The only people who didn't vote for this song are those who have never listened to it!

23 Letterbomb

The best song is "American Idiot." No argument. Songs like "Give Me Novocaine/Jesus of Suburbia" come close but can't compare. The beginning of the song is a bit creepy, but then the guitar kicks in. Tre does some of the most impressive drumming I've heard in Green Day's discography, and you're immediately drawn in. Billie then starts singing and delivers some of the best vocals on the album throughout the song. One of my favorite parts is when Billie lets out a powerful scream, and after that, the song is pure bliss. A great guitar solo plays, courtesy of Billie, and then he delivers some of the coolest lyrics on the whole album:

"You're not the Jesus of Suburbia
The St. Jimmy is a figment of
Your father's rage and your mother's love
Made me the idiot America."

(She's a Rebel also had some pretty good lyrics, too; "She's holding onto my heart like a hand grenade.")

The ending of the song is indescribable. Billie's melodies are amazing, and the guitar ending the song couldn't be more perfect.

24 St. Jimmy

I mean, how could this not be in the top tens? This is a great song. It means a lot. How could you not like this song? The guitar in this song is just amazing. Well done, Green Day, well done.

All the top ten voters should be ashamed. If St. Jimmy is not in Green Day's top ten, then you guys are either deaf or haven't heard it. Either way, fix up and make this list right.

Truly one of the best and most memorable Green Day songs, St. Jimmy should definitely be in the top 5. The sheer beauty of the music could move Chuck Norris to tears. Come on, people, vote for St. Jimmy!

25 Stuck with Me

It's their most energetic and melodic song. It comes in, says what it needs to, and hits the cuts. It stays at the same volume throughout the entire song. It has a melancholy ending, which suggests he's not alright but has no way to change that, so he just lets himself go crazy! GD FOR LIFE!

My favorite song. It's so underrated. By far one of Green Day's most underrated, if not the most underrated single.
