43 Queens of the Stone Age Queens of the Stone Age Queens of the Stone Age is an American rock band from Palm Desert, California, United States, formed in 1996. The band's line-up includes founder Josh Homme, alongside longtime members Troy Van Leeuwen, Michael Shuman, Dean Fertita, and recent addition Jon Theodore.

Songs For The Deaf is one of the greatest albums I've every heard.

44 Silverchair Silverchair Silverchair were an Australian rock band, which formed in 1992 as Innocent Criminals in Merewether, Newcastle with the line-up of Ben Gillies on drums, Daniel Johns on vocals and guitars, and Chris Joannou on bass guitar.

The ultimate success story - three teens from Australia playing in a garage get big. The heavy riffs and dark, emotive lyrics (Especially in Frogstomp and Freak Show) should place them at least in the top ten!

Frogstomp was an amazing album. Their music sadly degraded gradually from there... although many still enjoyed their later albums, there just wasn't enough support to keep the band thriving. "Young Modern" was their final album in 2007 and it was absolutely horrible... proving they've strayed so far from their original sound that they just weren't the same band anymore.
But Frogstomp alone is enough reason to mention them as quintessential 90's alternative rock.

45 Daughtry Daughtry Daughtry is an American rock band formed and fronted by namesake Chris Daughtry, who was a finalist on the fifth season of American Idol. Their self-titled debut album was released in November 2006. V 1 Comment
46 The Pixies The Pixies The Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts. The group disbanded in 1993 in acrimonious circumstances, but reunited in 2004. The group currently consists of founders Black Francis, Joey Santiago, and David Lovering.

Without the Pixies, no Nirvana. Listen to "Smells like Teen Spirit" for Pixies influence: the Loud Quiet Loud structure, the four-note 4/4 bass line and two-note guitar in the quiet parts, the screaming vocals - and some Nirvana songs are complete Pixie rips. The founders should be much higher on this list!

Way ahead of their time and still the best. If you have respect for David Bowie and his taste and innovations in music, remember he called Black Francis THE greatest American songwriter. Millions of people have yet to discover this amazing and underrated band. Pioneers one and all. Please vote them higher up the list!

Nirvana did not invent grunge. The Pixies did, and in doing so inspired bands like Nirvana and Radio-head.

49 Finger Eleven

Post-Grunge / Alternative band. Only had two hits in their career, neither of which I am a big fan of-- however, they have so many incredible songs nobody has heard about such as "Famous" and "My Carousel". - rbndelrio

The band was formed in 1991 by vocalist Brandon Boyd, lead guitarist Mike Einziger, and drummer Jose Pasillas while enrolled in Calabasas High School and later expanded to include bassist Alex "Dirk Lance" Katunich, and Gavin "DJ Lyfe" Koppell; more.

I really really love their songs especially BRANDON BOYD the super duper handsome vocalist..

... this low ranking of such a band makes me thinking about who's voting here ... excellent, maybe too intelligent alternative rock - definitely not position 56.

51 Soul Asylum
52 Alter Bridge Alter Bridge Alter Bridge is an American rock band from Orlando, Florida, formed in 2004. The band consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Myles Kennedy, lead guitarist and backing vocalist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall, and drummer Scott Phillips.

How in the bloody hell they are on no.43 They are number 1 kinda stuff. Myles is an angel... They deserve much more than this

This band is awesome in every field of their music... So this should be in the top tens..

I have heard Blaackbird for like 69 times. And I know that I am not alone.

58 The Killers The Killers The Killers is an American rock band formed in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2001, by Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning.

Their lyrics are all well thought out and have a meaning. I love the fact that they aren't afraid to change their sound with every album.

They are close to alternative rock.not pure alternative rock but they are very fat from grunge.but they are a very good band I like their soft riffs - zxm

59 Shinedown Shinedown Shinedown is an American hard rock band from Jacksonville, Florida, formed in 2001 and founded by members Brent Smith, Brad Stewart, Jasin Todd, and Barry Kerch.

Shinedown's evolution is great. They should be higher in the list. They've shown a very different side in each album and deserve respect.

Brent Smith is close to a complete Vocalist...

60 Tool Tool Tool is an American progressive metal/alternative metal band, that was formed in 1990. more. V 2 Comments
